The speed with which we were able to go from "we need more engineers" to having a Scalable Path team stood up and writing code was incredible -- it took 2 weeks. This was a big part of our analysis to engage with them as well because hiring in-house was at least 3 months but on average 5.5 months. We simply don't have that luxury of time to have top-tier talent working with us given growth rates.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Scalable Path could have done differently?

Not really. I mean, we've worked with other staff aug shops in the past but have had mixed reviews on onboarding speed, cost, and quality. We've felt from day one that Scalable Path is a great fit for us within those three buckets and haven't regretted a single decision made with them as a partner.

All of the team of contractors were great and fair with work and time tracking. We had one person, that we felt didn't perform to our liking (had the talent, but not the throughput we expected). For that person, Scalable worked with us to replace him.

They provided a recorded demonstration of the developers' abilities to meet the needs of our project. They offered advice for on boarding. Scalable also checked in from time to time to make sure our needs were being met.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Scalable Path could have done differently?

It would be nice if they provided better access to their peoples time-tracking. Some of our contractors worked on multiple projects so we had to require the employees track time in two systems.

The challenge was to present the information that was inherently complex in a manner that was easy to absorb for the "average" user. The target user was not a sophisticated financial professional but rather individuals who were interested in very long term investing.

There was nothing particular unusual about our project. It involved typical steps and an Agile process. SP actively wanted me to be involved in discussions with and supervision of the professionals that they were bringing to the table. This allowed me to advise the team on a frequent basis, a choice that accelerated our efforts.

We had a system architect, a full-stack developer, a UI/UX designer and access to technical support from our data supplier.

My goal was to desire a site, accessible on the web and a phone, that make our viewers feel like they were on a rocket ship -- aesthetically and analytically. Our goal, for ourselves and our viewers, is the presentation of investment choices that we think make sense. Our presentation of our recommendations had to match our analytic vision.

My own project management style is based on three principles which SP easily embraced. First, it is up to the client (me) to define the deliverables which means that a client has to think deeply about exactly what it wants from its developers. My second principle is never establish a schedule for developers. Allow/require the developers to establish their schedule and then push hard to get them to maintain their OWN schedule. Third, I require all team members to bring bad news fast. I was pleased with the tools employed by SP and the timeliness of SP's work.
