What business challenge were you trying to address with RubyGarage?

We've now created our 33rd platform and have worked with teams from everywhere in the world during this time. It was important that we find a company that would bring the most ambition and talent to the project. I went through a grilling process with a total of 17 different companies in order to assess whether they'd be able to work on my solution. I already had a blueprint for my ideas and I needed the best builders. I needed full-stack development with many APIs [application program interfaces] and backend elements. PHP is known for operating like a repository and being non-responsive, so I had to develop in either Python or Ruby on Rails. We needed a backend system that would be strong, but at the same time one that could be frameworked, sparing us from having to rebuild the whole wheel when we would want to change it. RubyGarage was a perfect match to my requirements in terms of ambition and skills.

They built our platform from scratch. There were 15 resources from RubyGarage assigned to the backend work for iOS, Ruby on Rails, as well as HTML, CSS, and frontend interface design. 

I only work with Agile teams when it comes to code production. I need a partner that will remain by my side for the duration of the project. As such, RubyGarage has remained a part of the ongoing maintenance effort as well.

How did you come to work with RubyGarage?

I came to know their company through a site called relocateme.eu. RubyGarage had worked with a big clothing store from Sweden and they also created an online pet store for someone I knew. I initially considered 5 other companies from all over the world, including Ukraine, Indonesia, The Philippines, India, and USA. The closest contender, besides RubyGarage, was a company in Salt Lake City which specialized in Python development. They were very skilled, but they charged three times the price, so there was just no possible way we could get them on the project.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

RubyGarage's cost estimations were extremely accurate and reasonable. We're still below-budget for the project. The credit for this goes both ways, given that I knew exactly what needed to be done and had accurate blueprints.

What is the status of this engagement?

The budget was divided up into three separate phases. We are now approaching the third and final one. We have a somewhat symbiotic relationship and continue to work together on an ongoing basis. The iOS app is expected to launch in two-and-a-half months.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

We created a dedicated web platform for publishing, as well as a web-responsive platform for people who aren't using our app. They can easily see what our service can offer through it. Our app will be available on iOS and Android, so we're covering the whole spectrum of usage. The features available within each are very stable and easy-to-use from a usability standpoint.

How did RubyGarage perform from a project management standpoint?

I gave them full control of their scrum process. I work with a project manager from RubyGarage and participate in scrum meetings. We use Trello for task management and GitHub as a code repository. Communication is done through Skype and we use Google Drive for document exchange.

They've been consistently reliable in terms of what they can deliver in a work-hour, only billing me for actual progress on established milestones.

What distinguishes RubyGarage from other providers?

I appreciate their level of quality and dedication. RubyGarage's team works on Saturdays and Sundays. They don't simply work hard because they're told to do so, but rather because they have an awareness of the project and are committed to its success. Even though I had accurate specifications, they asked me about every single element and made an effort in order for us to sharpen the knives on both sides. They have an awareness of what a Western audience would like when browsing a website through a desktop or mobile device. RubyGarage wants to make the work perfect, which is why their quality is so high.

Is there anything RubyGarage could have improved or done differently?

I think they should take more pride in their work. They do a good job, but sometimes I feel that they're not grasping that fact fully.
