**The Review** — Dec 16, 2019

**Feedback Summary**: Rootstrap's services are high-quality and their engineers have become a major part of the coding and development team. Professional and dedicated, their team successfully developed the SEO project. They work directly with the client's team and communicate constantly.
""Their professionalism is unmatched."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m VP of engineering at MasterClass.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We needed assistance with web development. At the time, we had a team of around 18 people and we needed to scale up the team because we had new initiatives.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

We reached out to Rootstrap and started with a couple of engineers to get the ball rolling. We’ve slowly ramped up their involvement to around 18 people working with us. They took care of an SEO initiative that we had. They also worked on the website. Their team helps with the backend work for our mobile application.

What is the team composition?

Out of a team of 18, one is a scrum master, one is a QA engineer, and the rest are regular engineers.

How did you come to work with Roostrap?

We were referred to Rootstrap from a friend of a friend.

What is the status of this engagement?

The work began in June 2018 and is still ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Overall, the quality is fantastic. The engineering team is very dedicated. They’ve essentially become part of our coding and development team. For example, their team has optimized our monthly subscription models. They’ve provided significant impacts on our promotional work.

From an SEO perspective, the execution speed is brilliant and the code quality is solid. That helped us build up our SEO initiative from the ground up, making it a major organic channel for us.

How did Roostrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Our main point of contact was Carolina (Engineer, Rootstrap). We don’t have a dedicated project manager, but we have one scrum master. Otherwise team members directly work with our project managers and team leads. We have standup meetings every morning and grander planning meetings every week. They fully participate in these meetings. We usually use Zoom for these meetings.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their professionalism is unmatched. The ways they groom their engineers and the quality of engineering are really good. Although the engineers are new, they are very good.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Nothing comes to mind.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

One thing we do is not treat them as an outsourced team. We think of them as one big team. They’re part of all our code initiatives. Typically, we give actual product work to the team, which they appreciate. They're involved; they have the same level of care and ownership of the product as our team. Don’t make them take on second-class work. If you treat them as your core team, you can utilize them to the fullest and tackle challenging problems.

**The Review** — May 3, 2024

**Feedback Summary**: Rootstrap has delivered the client's MVP, which is helping the client secure their seed round investment. The team sets realistic expectations and meets milestones. Rootstrap works following Agile methodologies and has weekly and biweekly sprint meetings, mapping out the project in Jira.
""I'm much more informed due to the way Rootstrap approaches our conversations.""

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.I'm the founder and CEO of Unity Companies. We are a holding company with two portfolios and three brands, one of which is a software development company in the investment phase. We also have a management consulting firm and a social media brand that produces a podcast where we engage people in debate about various topics. Our core mission is to provide better education and learning content for individuals and businesses alike.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap? We needed to develop an MVP for our software company, which is currently in the funding and investment phase.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?Rootstrap has designed our product and developed an MVP. The project started with a design deployment. We discussed the product's vision and look with Rootstraps, and the team worked using Figma. Rootstrap captured information during discovery and provided recommendations. Rootstrap has built our MVP according to the recommendations provided and has designed our MVP's core features. The team has also created a storyboard about how the project would look like.Rootstrap builds a structure and strategy and implements Agile methodology to execute. Our MVP has AWS integrations into the backend's databases. Our technology is nuanced and requires developers to extract methodologies that have been deployed in the past and learn from them. We use different types of vector database structures and AI systems. Rootstrap has conducted beta testing and delivered our MVP. Within this release, there is an admin panel and a public-facing application, and Rootstrap is currently building a customer advisory board that is set to review the MVP. What is the team composition? We work with around a dozen teammates from Rootstrap, including product managers, product designers, UI/UX designers, front- and backend developers, and full stack developers. How did you come to work with Rootstrap?I contacted Rootstrap through a referral from a friend. How much have you invested with them? We've spent around $150,000 on this project. What is the status of this engagement? We started working with Rootstrap in the fourth quarter of 2023, and our engagement is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?Rootstrap has launched our MVP internally. Our first experience with the application has been good, and the frontend is engaging and beautiful. Rootstrap offers recommendations and suggests features that are already on our development roadmap. Our company has decided to delay certain features, so it's good when the development team and I are on the same page and the feedback from our customers shows that we're thinking about this problem correctly. I've spoken to our investors about the problem we're trying to solve, and when I show them our MVP, their faces tell the entire story. We're potentially securing our seed round investment thanks to Rootstrap's work. We've invested all of our startup capital in the development of this project because of how effectively this engagement is going. I've decided not to hire internal developers, and we'll extend the engagement. Additionally, it's likely that I won't hire technical staff at all because of how effectively Rootstrap manages the project. I'm very appreciative of the entire Rootstrap team. I've asked for a list of all the teammates' names who have worked on our project, even of teammates I didn't meet directly, because I want to send handwritten messages to each person since Rootstrap's work has been very influential in my business. How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?Rootstrap has built the MVP in less than three months and stays within budget. We have biweekly meetings where the team shares progress, and we also have weekly sprint meetings where we talk about development and how to overcome challenges. Rootstrap executes Agile methodologies and maps out the project on Jira. Overall, we have incredible communication with Rootstrap, who meet every milestone. Rootstrap has pivoted accordingly, delivering better quality than the originally expected output.  Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?I want to highlight Tamara (Product Designer); at this point, I feel like she's part of my company because of how closely we work together and how much we talk. Julieta (Product Manager) has been very influential. Carmen (Senior Project Manager) is good at keeping our team in line. I also want to shout out Anthony (CTO & Co-Founder) because he's honest and collaborates with us regarding our financial situation. He has approached our partnership incredibly well from a business perspective. What did you find most impressive about them?Rootstrap has given very realistic feedback throughout the project. This is something I was initially worried about, and Rootstrap has been willing to have honest conversations about what is possible and what isn't, offering realistic expectations. We make effective decisions together, and I'm much more informed due to the way Rootstrap approaches our conversations. I'm never surprised by anything. Are there any areas they could improve? On the top of my head, I can't think of anything for Rootstrap to improve. Everything we've talked about has been quickly implemented. Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?I suggest being honest about what you're trying to achieve and the problems you think will come up. Be willing to have an open dialogue and listen to Rootstrap's feedback — I think this will benefit your engagement.

**Feedback Summary**: Rootstrap's staffing services help the client save time and improve efficiency. The team demonstrates exceptional recruiting and technical abilities, meeting the client's expectations. Rootstrap has met the launch deadline, tracks work via Jira, and is responsive via Slack, Google Meet, and Zoom.
""Rootstrap is every tech startup dream company.""

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.I’m the CEO and founder of an HR tech startup. Our company provides a software platform targeting US healthcare organizations and their clinical talent to help them bring data around their employees' licenses and credentials and continue education. Our software allows executives to make more effective workforce decisions, and doctors and nurses can save time not filling out paperwork and getting more specific data for their professional development decisions.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap? We needed to partner with an engineering team. I'm a technical CEO and needed to find a company with the required knowledge and expertise to help us go from our software's MVP to version one.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?Rootstrap provides IT staff augmentation and acts as our engineering team. The team is responsible for building our product features using different AI tools and programming languages. The team understands SQL and MongoDB and knows how to manage databases. Rootstrap also supports our platform's users and provides strategic insights. Rootstrap has redesigned our mobile application and continues to work on enhancements. Rootstrap has also integrated our mobile and web platforms and released our platform's first version to the public. Furthermore, Rootstrap manages our staffing as per the project's requirements. We don't hire internally and instead reach out to Rootstrap when we need extra resources. Rootstrap has provided additional technical talent with special skills, for instance, in machine learning and data areas.  What is the team composition? We've worked with Rootstrap's project manager, UI/UX designers, and software developers. How did you come to work with Rootstrap?I found Rootstrap while looking for a software engineering company in Clutch. I was looking for a vendor with web, mobile, and AI development expertise and contacted companies with an overall score above 4.7. Rootstrap immediately responded to schedule a meeting, and we narrowed our decision to two companies. Rootstrap was able to work on our timeline and bring in different specialists as per the meetings' requirements. Rootstrap also provided customer referrals that we contacted. All of Rootstrap's previous customers said fantastic things about them. I have 20 years of experience working in product engineering design and UI/UX design, and I knew exactly what skills I needed from our service provider. We chose Rootstrap because their time zone was more convenient for us since we're in the US, and other providers we talked to were in Europe and had a big time difference from us. The second reason we chose Rootstrap was for their ability to recruit and bring additional teammates to our team as our project grew. How much have you invested with them? We’ve spent around $100,000 on this project. What is the status of this engagement? We started working with Rootstrap six months ago, and our engagement is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?Rootstrap has met our expectations throughout our engagement and delivered exactly what we needed. Rootstrap's staffing services help my company be more effective since we're a startup, and I don't have enough time to manage a recruiting process. The team also helps us have more predictability in our spending since we don't have the big budgets that many technical positions require. Rootstrap knows how to hire and find the appropriate profiles for a growing company, and I no longer have to worry about this. Additionally, Rootstrap works using innovative technology. We have an enterprise platform and needed a team of experts to build it, and Rootstrap has been able to find this team. We update our platform every two weeks, and the team resolves bugs and adds features. The team is security-minded and looks after all details, ensuring we're in compliance with our business partners' agreements. We're in the healthcare industry, and there are different standards we need to comply with. Rootstrap is always double-checking and following best practices. The team has extensive accessibility experience, too, which is essential when building a complex enterprise healthcare app.Rootstrap is an experienced company, and I've never run into a problem working with them. I'm truly impressed since I've had somewhat bad experiences with different development companies before. We've also previously worked with a service provider with an inexperienced team. On the contrary, every Rootstrap teammate I've worked with has been fantastic. I love working with this team because they're smart, funny, and kind. I'm grateful we found Rootstrap because they're an exceptional partner, and I couldn't recommend them more. In my 20-year career, I had never worked with a company as exceptional as Rootstrap. We're happy with Rootstrap's high-quality work. How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?Rootstrap has met our launching deadlines and sometimes delivers work ahead of schedule. We have Agile stand-up meetings once a week and another weekly meeting with the UI/UX design team via Google Meet and Zoom. Rootstrap has never missed meetings and is constantly available — I've never waited longer than 24 hours when I've required a meeting with them. We use Slack for everyday communication and Jira for ticket creation and follow-up. Rootstrap delivers exactly what we need and is cost-effective. The payment process is easy, and we pay Rootstrap like any other vendor in the US. Rootstrap stays on budget, which is essential for a startup like us. The team works around our budget, and for the price we'd pay one engineer from the US, we can pay a team of 5-7 teammates from Rootstrap.  Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?I want to highlight Dino's (VP of Sales) work, which is fantastic. What did you find most impressive about them?I'm mostly impressed by Rootstrap's ability to hire and recruit IT talent. Rootstrap is a big organization, and every teammate we've interacted with is an expert at their job. We can see that none of our teammates are junior developers. After a career in product development, I can tell apart professionals who understand technology from the ones who don't. All the Rootstrap's technical team I've worked with, including the owners, are knowledgable and deep technology experts. Rootstrap's team doesn't just code; they're proactive and look for ways to integrate new technologies into our project. Rootstrap is passionate and creative and brings those abilities to all our product meetings. Rootstrap is every tech startup dream company. Are there any areas they could improve?I can't think of anything for Rootstrap to improve on. We haven't come across any problems yet. Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?I recommend potential customers be very specific about what they're looking for when engaging with Rootstrap. If they're not a tech professional, they can describe the finished outcome vision as clearly as possible.

**Feedback Summary**: The client is happy with Rootstrap’s quality of work, and the team’s technical skills meet requirements. Rootstrap meets deadlines and communicates well through Slack, Jira, Confluence, and Figma. Their flexibility and eagerness to meet clients' needs distinguish them from the competition.
"“Rootstrap works with us as a partner instead of an outsourcer.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.I’m an executive at a mobile-first platform for independent video journalists.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap? We hired them for web and mobile app development.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement? We already had app designs and high-fidelity wireframes. Initially, Rootstrap did an evaluation to see where we were, look at our designs, and make some recommendations on how to proceed. The team did some design work and made technology recommendations, on which we went back and forth. From there, we kicked off the first sprint. Rootstrap has started building the first product and laid out some infrastructure. Currently, the team is working on the second project concurrently with the first. Rootstrap is building the website from scratch using React and the mobile app using React Native. Aside from development, the team has also done QA, testing, and DevOps work. Rootstrap has built and automated the continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines and automated the cloud infrastructure. Once we launch the product, Rootstrap will provide app store optimization. What is the team composition? We’ve worked with two designers, a project manager, a product owner, a QA teammate, a testing teammate, and a DevOps teammate from Rootstrap. How did you come to work with Rootstrap? We found them on Clutch while looking for nearshore providers. We interviewed several outsourcing partners, and Rootstrap was one of them. How much have you invested with them? We’ve spent between $500,000–$700,000. What is the status of this engagement? We started working together in September 2022, and the engagement is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? The quality of Rootstrap's work is good overall. On the technical side, the team's skills are exactly what I anticipated and expected. How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint? They meet deadlines, although they haven't necessarily met the budget. Still, that isn't Rootstrap's fault. We didn't have as many designs for the website, so we've made some changes that have caused us to spend more than anticipated. We use Slack, Jira, Confluence, and Figma for communication. What did you find most impressive about them?We chose Rootstrap because of the flexibility they're willing to provide. Some development shops we talked to were very rigorous. In contrast, Rootstrap has been fine with us bringing our own resources and changing the team composition as needed. They're also willing to be aggressive in helping us reduce costs. Their business flexibility, willingness, and eagerness to work with us as we go through our startup pains have been their distinguishing factors. Rootstrap works with us as a partner instead of an outsourcer. Are there any areas they could improve? No, I've already shared my feedback with them. Do you have any advice for potential customers?Try to be as clear as possible about your wants and business priorities. The more work you do on your designs upfront, the better Rootstrap can help you in development. The team can also help you work through designs, but it's usually better to develop as much about the design as possible when working with an outsourcing partner. The more you can think the design through, document it, and have it ready for them, Rootstrap can digest it faster and get through delivery.

**The Review** — Apr 12, 2023

**Feedback Summary**: Rootstrap has delivered an intuitive and streamlined product, receiving positive feedback from users and keeping the project on budget. The team has excelled at mapping the process to meet the deadlines, using Jira, Google Meet, and Slack to collaborate. Moreover, they’re trustworthy and thorough.
"“They’ve done their best to build the best product possible within our budget.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder and CEO of Backbone, an email strategy automation tool for direct-to-consumer e-commerce brands.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We needed help with developing our MVP.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Rootstrap has helped us develop our MVP from scratch. Their team has been involved in the entire project, from scoping the project itself and refining the scope for the MVP to designing the UI/UX and developing the front- and backend of the product.

First, Rootstrap helped us with an initial scoping and UI/UX design process for the MVP to get a sense of how the functionality of each of its features would work. As part of the deliverables for the UI/UX design, Rootstrap also helped us develop a rough brand look and feel. Of course, they also designed the actual screens for the MVP, taking into account the user flow and user process.

After that, Rootstrap went into the actual MVP development process and was in charge of managing it entirely. As part of its core features, we needed to integrate five relatively complicated algorithms into the platform’s backend. Their team helped us ideate a solution and figure out the most streamlined way to execute the end goal for the user.

To achieve this, Rootstrap understood how the algorithms worked so that they wouldn’t just blindly write them. Additionally, they looked for edge cases, asking intelligent questions along the way. In addition to those algorithms, they also developed a calendar feature and a visual display of an email layout.

As for the technology stack, Rootstrap has used Figma for the UI/UX designs, as well as Django, JavaScript, Node.js, and Heroku for development. Since the MVP development project finished, we’ve been working with Rootstrap on a maintenance plan to continue fixing bugs and adding new features. Moreover, we plan to continue building future versions of the platform as well.

What is the team composition?

We’ve worked with 6–7 teammates from Rootstrap, including a product manager, a project manager, a UI/UX designer, a frontend developer, two backend developers, and a QA engineer.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

I found them online. At the time, we had had a very poor experience hiring a different development agency, so hiring a trustworthy agency was very important for us. Initially, what interested me about Rootstrap was their experience in machine learning because that was something we wanted to incorporate into our platform in the future, and we wanted a partner with whom we could grow. Still, what truly sealed the deal was their sales process.

Rootstrap took us through a free pre-sale scoping process, which was great. We really appreciated that gesture because it helped us build a lot of trust. During that process, their team took the time to understand our needs and what we were trying to build so that they could come up with an accurate scope and estimate for both the timeline and budget for the project.

In addition to that, Rootstrap helped us refine the MVP scope to make it fit within our budget. Thanks to that process, we felt that they were already a fantastic partner prior to even signing a contract. After setting the scope and estimates, we started working together.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between $250,000–$275,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in September 2022, and Rootstrap delivered the MVP in mid-February 2023, but our engagement is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Rootstrap has done a fantastic job at designing our MVP in a very intuitive and sleek way for users. The UI looks very high-end and connects very well with the backend as well. Currently, we’re in the demo phase, so we haven’t launched the MVP yet. Still, the demos have gone very well, and a lot of users have commented on how smooth and intuitive the platform is.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Rootstrap has been great at managing the entire process, mapping it out, and helping us prioritize our needs. Keeping the MVP within a certain budget was our top priority from the start, so their team has built extensive project management systems based on those priorities.

Rootstrap has also been fantastic at meeting deadlines and providing us with reports. They’ve been very flexible and agile at delivering reports and updates in the way we need to receive them. As for collaboration tools, we use Jira for project management and Slack and Google Meet to communicate.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The partnership element that Rootstrap brings to the table is impressive. Their development team has come up with different ideas and ways to innovate, which are rare to find. Additionally, they’ve been genuinely interested in building a great product by understanding our users and how they would interact with it to identify areas in which they could get stuck. They’ve thought about potential issues very thoroughly.

Throughout the process, Rootstrap has provided us with a lot of design suggestions. They’ve really brought in their user flow expertise and explained how users could perceive certain buttons and what would be the natural next thing for them to click on. Thanks to that, they’ve created a very intuitive UI/UX design.

Another thing we really value about Rootstrap is that they work seamlessly between their design and development teams to create features in the easiest and cheapest way possible while still providing a great UX that fulfills the user's needs. They’ve done their best to build the best product possible within our budget.

For other development agencies, it’s very easy to continue making things more complicated than they could be to increase their scope. However, we’ve built a level of trust with Rootstrap, so we know that they’re genuinely looking for ways to streamline the workflow.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There’s nothing Rootstrap could improve on. They’re probably one of my favorite partners to work with.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Come in with a very clear idea of what you want and what success looks like for you, and ask them for feedback and ideas in that regard. Rootstrap is very well-equipped, but they need to be set up for success.

Operations Manager, Terracove
- Industry: Other industries

- Client size: 1-10 Employees
- Review Type: Phone Interview

**The Review** — Mar 24, 2023

**Feedback Summary**: Rootstrap ultimately delivered very detailed information and wireframe designs, giving the client the possibility to go to any development firm to build their product. The team was communicative, agile, friendly, and responsive, leveraging Slack, Google Meet, and Miro to collaborate.
"“Rootstrap was very responsive, and we had very open lines of communication.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the operations manager for Terracove.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

Terracove was in the process of developing an online sales platform for eco-friendly and environmentally friendly products. Given that I have a lot of background in e-commerce and sales, they brought me in to help build the platform from the inside out and oversee the development process.

However, we were taking on a monumental task. Although we already had ideas of where to start, no one on our team was a web developer, so we approached Rootstrap to get help.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Rootstrap took us through the first phase of this project, which they called the discovery phase, during which we asked a lot of questions and got a lot of answers. This process took about six weeks and covered everything, from the flow of the website to the needs of our target market. Throughout the process, we did 6–7 user interviews, out of which we got very good information to develop the wireframes.

Rootstrap’s services were more related to consulting. At the end of the process, they delivered a packet that included all the requirements for the website. The deliverables included different documents, notes, interviews, PowerPoint presentations, and wireframes for us to go to any development firm and have them develop this product. As for the technology stack, Rootstrap used Figma and Miro to create the wireframes.

What is the team composition?

We worked with Carol (Product Designer), Gastón (Product & UX Senior Researcher), a team manager who ensured everything got done on time, a main developer and software engineer, and a web developer. Gastón helped us a lot with product research and user interviews. In addition to them, we were in contact with Dino (VP of Sales) and their upper management, including the CEO.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

We found them on Google. When we were looking for a partner, many other web development firms told us that our project was too big and that they didn’t have the capability necessary. However, Rootstrap was immediately on board with our idea.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from September–December 2022.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Rootstrap delivered a great and very detailed packet of information, allowing us to go to any development firm to get the product built. However, as we didn’t actually build the product, we don’t have any metrics regarding its performance.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Rootstrap was very slick, and their communication was great. I never struggled with getting in contact with them because they were very quick at answering our emails. On top of that, this was a very collaborative process; Carol and our design team worked very closely together to develop our solutions.

We had a very active Slack channel where we communicated not only with the designers and developers but also with the sales team. Moreover, we used Google Meet for our meetings, and we leveraged Miro, where we had 3-hour meetings to go through the project. I even had a meeting with their CEO to talk about the project.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We didn’t go far into the project when we decided to stop it, and one of the things I really liked about Rootstrap was that they didn’t trick us into continuing with it. We were very upfront about the fact that we weren’t sure if the project would move forward because we were on a tight budget. When it was time to part ways, I never felt pressured to continue working with them, which was really great.

Additionally, I’ve heard that other companies are difficult to communicate with. However, Rootstrap was very responsive, and we had very open lines of communication. That was one of the main reasons we had so much success.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don’t have anything to critique about Rootstrap. We ended the project on a very good note, so I would totally work with them again.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Work with them! You’ll find a lot of success if you’re very communicative. Don’t be afraid to talk because they’ll listen.

#### Mobile App Dev for AR Software Company
**The Project**
- Services: AI Development, Custom Software Development, Mobile App Development, Web Development
- Project size: $50,000 to $199,999
- Project length: Apr. - Dec. 2022

**Project Summary**: Rootstrap developed a mobile application for an AR software company. The solution was a native app for iOS; they coded the app in Swift and used an Apple Maps API to create a bespoke game engine.

- Review Type: Phone Interview

**The Review** — Mar 15, 2023

**Feedback Summary**: Rootstrap successfully delivered a high-quality product that allowed the client to test user behavior that will be the foundation of their product lineup. Moreover, the team delivered on time and within budget; they led a smooth development process and communicated clearly through Trello and Slack.
"“Rootstrap went beyond our expectations and was very competitive.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the CEO & founder of Wolf Suit Games, an AR software company. We’re democratizing the AR medium by creating a no-code platform that anybody can use to easily create, share, and monetize our content.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We wanted to develop the beta version of a flagship mobile game that would run on the same engine as our other products.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

We initially had a brief two-week discovery phase where we worked with Rootstrap’s team to get onto the same page. Then, we launched into the app development; Rootstrap brought us a development proposal with all the modular components we’d develop. They coded everything in Swift and other libraries and technologies.

The solution was a native app for iOS. They built upon the Apple Maps API and created a bespoke game engine to deliver the experiences we designed. The app had geo-location aspects and various triggers and conditions depending on what the player did and where they were. We designed the app so we could write up simple JSON packets to feed them into the app and produce an experience. Therefore, we could continuously develop new content for it because it was based on a modular input.

What is the team composition?

We worked with three teammates for the majority of the engagement. We had a product manager, a lead iOS developer, and a QA tester.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

Another development agency recommended them. We spoke to the CEO about the work we wanted to do, but he felt it wasn’t the best fit for his agency, so he recommended we reach out to Rootstrap.

We spoke to 10–12 potential service providers while we were vetting agencies, but we ultimately went with Rootstrap because they had experience developing comparable technologies. They also provided a competitive quote, and the team came across as competent during our initial conversations.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent roughly $120,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in April 2022, and they completed it in December 2022.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We didn’t develop the app for public release, so we don’t have a number of downloads. We developed the app to use in a limited beta test to learn more and test our hypotheses around user behavior for the medium we were exploring. In that sense, the app has allowed us to experiment and test our various hypotheses; it’ll form the foundation upon which we’ll build the rest of our product lineup.

We experienced crashes and bugs when we were in development. Rootstrap would release the latest version to us, and we’d play around with it to identify the bugs. If it crashed, they’d send a developer to rectify it.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Project management was great. They went a bit over the deadline and over budget, but it was very close. Everything was clearly communicated; there weren’t any hiccups. We had a smooth development process, and Rootstrap’s team took a lot of the work off our shoulders.

They used Trello for project management, but we mostly communicated through Slack.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They delivered what we wanted to a high quality and close to the budget and timeline. Rootstrap went beyond our expectations and was very competitive.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Honestly, there were no areas of improvement.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Consider Rootstrap as a strong contender. Clients don’t have to do anything unique to get the most out of the engagement; Rootstrap makes everything easy.

**Feedback Summary**: Rootstrap’s developers maintain a high standard of quality, and the team is always trying to fulfill the client’s needs and make improvements. Moreover, they’re experienced, responsive, and well-organized; they’re great at checking in and communicating through GitHub, Microsoft Teams, and Slack.
"“Everyone that has joined the team has been a high-caliber developer.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the director of software development at a SaaS company. The logistics industry uses our system to gain analytics, cost savings, and more.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We needed help with staff augmentation to assist our development team. We were looking for mid-level engineers with experience in Ruby on Rails and React.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Rootstrap provides staff augmentation services. We initially hired a couple of developers and eventually added some QA staff as well. The team works remotely from South America.

What is the team composition?

Our main point of contact is Juan Francisco (Engineering Manager).

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

They were a referral from one of our CEO’s friends. We evaluated 4–5 companies that we found on Google, but we ultimately decided to go with Rootstrap.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent over $300,000 so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in April 2022, and our relationship is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We don’t track speed or any other metric; I just do the evaluations myself. Rootstrap has a high level of quality compared to other domestic hires. Everyone that has joined the team has been a high-caliber developer. Moreover, Rootstrap’s developers have given us a lot of feedback on our process, which we’ve incorporated across our entire development team.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

They meet deadlines and stay on budget. We use GitHub and Zenhub, a project management extension to add agile and Scrum features to GitHub. Additionally, we use Microsoft Teams and Slack for communication.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Although they’re smaller than other providers, Rootstrap is great at checking in with us. The management staff is very responsive, and they’re always trying to fulfill our needs. Rootstrap looks for things they can improve, and the team has an excellent feedback loop. Overall, they treat us very well.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Sometimes the quality of the work can fluctuate. A developer might produce excellent work, and then they make sloppy mistakes. However, I feel this is a common issue with an outsourced team, where the sense of ownership isn’t as strong. Nonetheless, Rootstrap’s quality is still strong compared to other outsourcing companies. They have very high standards.

Additionally, the pricing could be more competitive; although it’s fair considering the quality.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

You should have a good idea of your needs ahead of time. Rootstrap can handle things well, so you just need to work with your product or account manager.

Overall, take advantage of their experience; they’ve worked with many teams, so hear their feedback. They can give good recommendations about process improvements.

**Feedback Summary**: The client is exceedingly happy with Rootstrap’s quality work. The team has achieved a good velocity for the development, and they’re outstandingly proactive and collaborative. Also, they’ve been patient, helpful, and responsive in their project management. Overall, they act as true partners.
""Rootstrap is a good partner — we have an open dialog, and they feel like part of our team.""

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

Our company buys and sells houses online. I lead a team and report to our CEO on experimental features.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

It’s exceedingly difficult to hire engineers right now, and we didn’t have the internal bandwidth to hire our own. We have other internal challenges at the core company.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Rootstrap has been doing iOS development. We handle the UX design, and they do the actual engineering for the iOS and Android applications.

What is the team composition?

We have two full-time engineers, one project manager, a QA person, and the account people who aren’t on the project for the day-to-day work.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

I looked at my professional network and searched on Google for software engineers. We were trying everything to find new people, so we put out an RFP and talked to a few agencies.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in May 2021, and we’re still in active development.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Our experience has been fantastic. Initially, we were concerned about the resources in Uruguay, but the team works exceptionally well. We’ve had many bad experiences with offshore teams, but they’ve been excellent partners. Since we’re a startup inside a big company, there’s some friction because we want to move fast. However, they’ve been patient and helpful.

In terms of results, we’ve achieved a velocity that we wouldn’t see with many larger teams. We’ve moved on to features and changed stuff midstream, and they’ve been responsive and proactive about it. Overall, Rootstrap is a good partner — we have an open dialog, and they feel like part of our team.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

It’s hard to tell because our deadlines are very fluid. Nonetheless, we trust them 100% to get things done when they say they'll do. They hit their marks on time.

What did you find most impressive about them?

When we started this project, we wanted a partner, not someone who’d march to their own drum. Rootstrap stands out for the collaborative nature of their team. If we could find a word that combines proactive and collaborative, that’s what we’d use to describe them.

Are there any areas they could improve?

At the beginning of our engagement, they tended to docs on delivering perfect, polished things, which is appropriate for a company like them. It took them a while to adjust and optimize for speed instead of quality, which is a difficult instance to break. I don’t necessarily give them negative marks for that.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be over-communicative and talk more than what you think you need to.

**The Review** — Oct 27, 2021

**Feedback Summary**: While the work is ongoing, Rootstrap has been able to produce high-quality work. Their sense of ownership as well as their solid QA and testing skills are key to their success. Responsive and flexible, customers can expect to work with a team with exceptional technical skills.
""They have a very clean and transparent system for documenting the project.""

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the IT and accounting manager for a health and wellness company that focuses on the ancient Indian health wellness modality called AyurPrana — we do education and coaching for that modality.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We didn’t have the skillset or experience to develop our app. As a result, we brought Roostrap onboard to develop a mobile app where we could enable our customers to participate in online emergence and potentially create a subscription revenue stream.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Rootstrap is focused on building and designing our app from scratch. They’re working on enabling us to host live events on the app. Additionally, they’re building a content library for education, inspiration, and wellness as well as a community for our users. We're now in the middle of the development stage.

What is the team composition?

We’re working with their project manager, designer, product manager, and front- and backend developers.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

When we tested Rootstrap’s workshopping skills, they helped us understand what we were trying to achieve. From that point, we liked how Rootstrap worked — they were highly capable and their pricing was reasonable. As a result, we decided to continue moving forward to get a proposal from them on our actual development work.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent $200,000–$250,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together in March 2021, and we continue to collaborate.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The quality of their work is good, and they’re great at owning our product. Sometimes, they also push back on our ideas, making our engagement even refreshing.

In the future, we’ll gauge their performance on how our users are utilizing the app so that we can quickly get users on our subscription program. Overall, we’ll check how fast we can get to a place where we’ll have enough value to charge for the app — hopefully in the middle of next year. Then, we have a revenue goal of $2 million by the end of next year.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Rootstrap's communication skills are strong, and their project management workflow is excellent. We primarily use Slack and Zoom to communicate.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We appreciate that they’re a process-oriented company. Since they have a flexible model, we always adjust things as we move along. We also like their QA and testing efforts because they ensure that they effectively implement bug fixes. Furthermore, they have a very clean and transparent system for documenting the project.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Set up meetings in order to flush out questions that staff may have along the way. By doing that, you can save a lot of time and money.

"“Rootstrap is very communicative, transparent, and organized.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the co-founder of a software company that makes tools to allow businesses to hire employees more effectively.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We needed software engineering services.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Initially, Rootstrap built out the framework of our first product. Since then, we’ve iterated on that many times, and we’ve hired a more comprehensive engineering team to release more products.

What is the team composition?

Erica (Regional Sales Director) is our sales representative. She was the first point of contact.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

We initially came across Erica, who worked hard to find the best people in her company. She bid on the project and gave us a price that we were comfortable with. It was a very back-and-forth process, and we really appreciated that she seemed to be both on our side and on Rootstrap’s side. We went with them because of this.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together around November 2020, and our engagement is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Rootstrap helped us get from an idea to an actual product that was paramount in building our company — we couldn’t have done it without them.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Rootstrap is very communicative, transparent, and organized. They deliver great work, and for the most part, they hit the deadlines.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Rootstrap’s transparency is their best asset. Their work isn’t a black box; we’re with them every step of the way, and we communicate daily.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Their speed isn’t the same as the speed of an in-house engineering team, but they’re very organized.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be very organized, know exactly what you need, and provide them with a clear scope.

**The Review** — Jun 1, 2021

**Feedback Summary**: Equipped with incredible UI/UX design skills, Rootstrap was able to develop a user-centered app. Thanks to their efforts, the client was able to start gathering feedback from their end-users. Their excellent workflow along with their solid development skills was key to their success.
""They were a good partner to us and we would like to continue engaging with them."

"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am the founder of Teardrop Developments. We do lifestyle, entertainment, and anime-focused mobile apps.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We were in the process of creating our flagship mobile app that was focused on anime recommendations. When we started the mobile app, we had a prototype or our first MVP. However, it was lacking in algorithm. Furthermore, it had a weak UI/UX design.

As a result, it wasn’t as pleasing for our end users. The main challenge for Rootstrap was to improve our prototype and come up with a fresh new app.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

We came to Rootstrap with a pretty clear idea of what we wanted. We wanted a cross-platform mobile app that could be on Android and iOS. In addition, we wanted it to have basic functionalities such as user login and user registration. There should also be a database for anime that would be visible within the app.

Then, the real focus was the recommendation algorithm; it should be smart, intuitive, and something akin to Spotify and Apple Music where end-users could find new content all the time. Since our app was finished already, we recently talked to their marketing team to see if we could collaborate on another project.

What is the team composition?

We started with five members including their sales rep who worked as an oversight for the team. Then, they have four dedicated members which consisted of a project manager, head of product owner, developer, and a technical architect. We expanded on that and added a couple of other developers from time to time. Usually, we worked with 5–7 people.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

I started working on our prototype back in 2018. At the same time, I started looking for companies to work with us in finishing the mobile app since I was doing it by myself. We ended up going with another company because of pricing.

We knew that Rootstrap was probably the better choice because we initially wanted to go with them. When they finally became in our price range, we decided to engage with them because they fit the bill. Along with their great portfolio, they worked with customers like Spotify — which was a company we were trying to mimic.

How much have you invested with them?

The initial project’s estimate was around $90,000, but we ended up spending $71,000 since we did some cuts.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our engagement ran from November 2020–April 2021.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We saw the product that they were able to give us, and it was really good. The app had a good look and feel. Everything was clean and we received positive feedback from external stakeholders. End users said that they were able to receive great recommendations they didn’t know before. That meant that we were able to dramatically enhance our recommendation algorithm. In fact, the app was much better than we had.

Since our app had been deployed, our focus turned towards increasing our users and user base. The team made it possible for us to gather feedback from our end users. In the past couple of months, we were able to gather data on areas of improvement for the app. Overall, they were a good partner to us and we would like to continue engaging with them.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Since my job was focused on project management, I had an eye for scrutiny throughout the process and I must say that Rootstrap did a good job. Initially, we just had to connect which usually happens in most projects. In the end, we built a working relationship to understand how each other works.

At first, their team didn’t record meetings and detailed minutes, but after we requested them to do that, they easily accommodated us. They used Jira to manage sprints, stories, and more. They also used Sigma and other very similar tools.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Based on this experience and previous experience with another provider, they were with me in the nitty-gritty of the project. I monitored their progress in areas such as coding, development, and design, and they were very collaborative. They kept us informed and kept communication up every step of the way for any changes. That was a big win for me.

There were times when I didn’t have to jump into a meeting, so getting those updates and knowing what would happen was a big help for me. The biggest thing for me was that they were highly interested in our project. They shared our successes and failures. Above all, they really wanted us to succeed.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It may be that I had such a bad experience with my first provider that everything was just great here. I’d say they could improve their pricing because they were a bit expensive. However, I’d be willing to pay an extra penny for the level of services Rootstrap had provided for us.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be engaged. You just don’t pay someone, tell them what to do, and expect your project to just happen. You need to be in there with them to make sure everything is alright. You should make an effort to respond in a timely manner to ensure you don’t slow down the process. Above all, be clear and concise about what you want.

**The Review** — Oct 19, 2020

**Feedback Summary**: The roadmap proved to be a crucial component in setting up the marketplace for success. The product has won a Women in Tech award and caught the attention of accelerators. Rootstrap’s quality of work and professionalism stood out the most.
"“They’re the people to go to if you want to develop your roadmap and product foundation.”
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder of a freelance marketplace that attracts quality global freelancers and corporates to create teams.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We brought on Rootstrap to set the foundations of our platform. They were responsible for building the product roadmap for what our solution would be.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Rootstrap provided business development services, creating a roadmap that would breakdown our product. In our case, it was a large-scale platform that included a mobile/tablet app as well as a web version. The final deliverable was a map and an offline prototype. We’re currently using their roadmap to build our product.

What is the team composition?

The team was about four people in total. We worked with a business development lead, but there was also an account manager and strategist, too.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

I found them on LinkedIn. At the time, Ben (Founder) was posting about Roostrap and what they offered, so I did some research. We were looking for the best of the best to help us set our foundation. After going to their website and giving them a call, I felt they fit the bill.

How much have you invested with them?

We paid them about $15,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked with them from January–April 2018.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Rootstrap set us up for success. Thanks to our collaboration with them, we’ve won Women in Tech awards and have even gotten accepted into accelerator programs. They’ve been a true help in finding the right development team for us, too.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

The project management was definitely fantastic. The beauty of what we’re developing is that it’s all about remote work, so we figured that we’d practice what we preached.

Rootstrap was all the way in Los Angeles, New York, and South America while we were in the Middle East. We did weekly meetings with them along with catch-ups. I’d be involved once or twice a week before everything wrapped up in April.

We’ve remained in touch throughout the years to see if we could go ahead with them to build our product, but that depended on the investment we received.

What did you find most impressive about them?

There are so many competitors out there, but Rootstrap was unique with the people they hired. Generally speaking, the team was professional, easy to work with, and smart. The head strategist, in particular, was top-notch.

Are there any areas they could improve?

When it comes to roadmapping, it would’ve helped to set our expectations if we knew that their prototype was going to be an offline prototype. That’s nothing to hold against them, but it did set us back.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Don’t think twice about hiring them. They’re the people to go to if you want to develop your roadmap and product foundation. However, it’s worth it to spend a bit extra to have a live prototype from them. Again, that’s something we slowed us down for a few years because we didn’t have that done.

**Feedback Summary**: Rootstrap’s work has been pivotal to the company’s success in securing investments. They provide high-quality resources that are incredibly skilled and always striving to broaden their expertise. Their seamless integration with the internal team sets them apart, as does their ability to communicate.
"“They have a great group of people that integrate with our team amazingly well.”
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the VP of engineering for an online education company.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We needed staff augmentation services.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Rootstrap provides high-quality senior developers and QA people. They work alongside two other firms and our in-house team to develop the platform. They’re our core developers.

What is the team composition?

We work with 14 people from Rootstrap: 13 developers and 1 QA.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

I tried them about two years ago when I was at a previous company. I talked to one of the founders, who proposed using one person. That person was great, so we just kept adding after that.

How much have you invested with them?

At this point, we’re probably nearing $2 million.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together around July or August 2018.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They’ve been pivotal in architectural decisions and design review done by due diligence; that was really favorable. All of their hard work has paid off in that respect. It’s hard to say how much to attribute to engineering, but I’d say that they’ve been one of the key factors in helping us get investments.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

That isn’t their role; they provide engineers, and project management is handled internally. We typically communicate via Slack, Zoom, and email. They’re great with communication.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their culture distinguishes them from other providers. They have a great group of people that integrate with our team amazingly well.

The quality of their developers also stands out. I’ve never gotten a junior engineer from them. Everyone has been incredibly good. They’re always pushing their developers to become better at the frameworks they use. They’re great at hiring talented people.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I’d say they could offer more product management. However, product management is a bit of a different concept to a Silicon Valley-based company than it is to a company in Uruguay and Argentina. They might be able to come around to that point of view of product management.

Any advice for potential customers?

View managing the people at Rootstrap as you would any other employee of yours.

The team communicates clearly and executes on their responsibilities effectively. They provide valuable expertise to support product improvements.
""They take their experiences and integrate them into my project to create more value."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the CEO of V3 Cybersecurity Inc. We’re a cybersecurity maturity assessment organization.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We needed to address the challenges that many security companies have, which are visibility and current consultative models. Most of the models that gave you visibility into your cybersecurity maturity were consultant-led. I felt that there was a better, technical form.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Rootstrap designed and developed the cybersecurity platform. Their team designed the UX/UI and executed on the development. They primarily used Ruby. They also managed our AWS implementation. Now, they’re performing maintenance too.

What is the team composition?

I have a main point of contact. From a development perspective, I’ve worked with the same scrum master. I’ve also worked with the same frontend programmer since day one. During the initial development, I had a main point of contact who was our project manager.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

I looked for South American development companies and found them through Clutch.

How much have you invested with them?

We've spent between $125,000–$150,000 on their services.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started our partnership in June 2019, and our major development effort finished in November 2019. But we’ve continued to engage with them.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I’ve been happy with their processes and management. In some instances, we could’ve had issues that made for an ugly situation. It’s a testament to their organization that those instances strengthened our relationship.

In the beginning, I was heavily engaged in the development process. I had strict oversight. By the time we finished the development, I'd given them guidance and trusted them to execute on my vision. That's an important part of our relationship. I trust Rootstrap to take my ideas and concepts and turn them into a product.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

We used JIRA to work through the program and had weekly meetings. We followed an Agile methodology with two-week sprints.

They communicate well. Their flexibility and transparency are top-notch. Their ability to address concerns throughout the process was excellent.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their transparent approach and flexibility impress us. Their designers also listen to us. They take their experiences and integrate them into my project to create more value. We’ve been able to leverage their experiences, which accelerated the process and created a better product.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I don’t have a bad thing to say.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

My advice would be to engage with them. Give them an opportunity. They want to compete for business. They’re small enough to be hungry and big enough to be established. Their leadership is open to earning business. Include them in your shortlist.

**The Review** — Feb 19, 2020

**Feedback Summary**: Rootstrap delivered a functional platform that supports a significant amount of traffic without failure to encourage conversions. The team is accessible to encourage collaboration and transparency with scheduling to streamline the engagement. They are flexible, which ensures a supportive partnership.
""We could trust them to deliver."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the CTO of an e-commerce platform in the rent-to-own space that serves our clients without physical stores. We built the platform to both provide products and underwrite the customer.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We built a web application with an offshore development team but ran into problems with the first iteration. We needed a different partner to rebuild the application.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Rootstrap replaced our first offshore development team. While a maintenance team supported the initial version of the app, their team developed the second version of our platform from scratch. We also engaged their design team to create mockups and resolve design challenges visually.

Their team created the microservice platform with several technologies. The frontend’s based in ReactJS and the backend was built in Ruby. The app’s containerized on AWS. We use Kubernetes for container management and Postgres as the database.

What is the team composition?

At its peak, 15 people from Rootstrap worked on the project. We’re reducing that number gradually.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

Our president and CEO found Rootstrap through a referral. After searching online and performing background checks, we asked them to assess our first application and show us how their team would improve it. Initially, we engaged only two people from Rootstrap to investigate the platform and help us decide how to proceed. As they did a great job, we felt that they could do a better job by rebuilding the entire app. We had a bid process and brought in other vendors to talk us through how they might create a second version but didn’t give them the same level of access as Rootstrap. We felt comfortable in our relationship with them and chose them to rebuild the entire app.

How much have you invested with them?

Our burn rate's around $100,000 a month.

What is the status of this engagement?

We brought on the initial teammates from Rootstrap in August 2018. In June 2019, we expanded the team to start building the next app and their work’s ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The first version of our platform crashed often. We also didn't have metrics to measure our site's capacity. We wanted to know the amount of traffic that our product could handle especially for a busy shopping season. We tested the platform based on the prior year to make sure the new version could handle that amount of traffic. The product never crashes. By using Kubernetes, we’re able to deploy continuously without taking anything down, which is a huge plus. That saves us a huge amount of time. We don’t feel that we’ve lost any money from customers frustrated by the site.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

We use JIRA to manage the flow and Slack to communicate daily. Their team also uses a tool that shows the project graphically. It wasn’t a fixed bid with contracts where we had to hit a certain timeframe, so we work together on timelines and trusted their estimates.

We carefully decided what features needed to be in the application to manage our schedule. Our project manager works closely with their project manager to make sure that we’re always on track and informed. We had daily check-ins and weekly progress reports. We felt informed and were never surprised.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their project manager realized that our schedule’s busy as we work with a whole other development team. The project manager started to create video updates for us to watch at any time and pass around to management. That made us feel comfortable. We understood that if they replaced our other team, they would give us that level of communication. It seems small but it showed our team that they understood and would be able to deliver. We could trust them to deliver. We're in the same time zone, allowing their team to work during our hours.

Are there any areas they could improve?

While we always work through it, there are times when we feel that products should be delivered faster. Their team wanted to follow two-week sprint cycles and a traditional path for deployment. A product could be delivered over a two-week sprint but more critical features need to be done faster. We had hiccups to pulling that off. When we asked to prioritize a feature, we meant that it needed to be done as soon as possible not in a two-week sprint.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be clear about the development model that your team will follow. Let them know if you need a flexible development schedule. Have a timeframe for when you expect products to be delivered.

**The Review** — Feb 5, 2020

**Feedback Summary**: Rootstrap is proactive with replacing engineers and making sure they meet requirements. They find a solution to any issue and keep the team updated with processes. Providing great engineers that are intelligent and dedicated makes for a smooth working relationship.
""There’s no challenge working with them and the quality is exceptional."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the vice president of engineering at Cleo, a family healthcare company.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

I was looking for staff augmentation. We’re a pretty early-stage startup and when I joined the company, I didn’t have a strong engineering team. I inherited a team of three engineers and we needed a lot more people.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

They provide staff augmentation, specifically engineers to work on our projects and work alongside our full-time in-house engineers.

What is the team composition?

My main point of contact was the head of sales. Then we had an account manager and two engineers. Now we’ve grown the team to five engineers and two designers.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

I believe I got a cold email. I was struggling with the engineering capacity until they emailed me about staff augmentation. It was a well put together deck that they sent me.

How much have you invested with them?

We have spent $1 million so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in September 2019 and the work is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Their engineers are dedicated, smart, and humble. There’s no challenge working with them and the quality is exceptional. It’s been a very fruitful and healthy relationship.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

We haven’t had them lead a project end to end, but overall it’s good. Their communication skills are great; they dialed into our video calls every day. Their engineers are dedicated, smart, and humble. There’s no challenge working with them and the quality is exceptional.

After evaluating an engineer that wasn’t performing effectively for 2–3 months, I communicated that to our account manager and he took care of it immediately and replaced that engineer with another. If there’s any issue, they’ll tell you about it and try to find a solution. One of their designers was going on vacation and before he left, they found a replacement.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their communication skills are good across the board and they’re very proactive. I’ve seen it at the engineering level, to the account manager,  up to their CEO and they’re very forthcoming with anything. If there’s any issue, they’ll tell you about it and try to find a solution. One of their designers was going on vacation and before he left, they found a replacement.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There’s nothing I’d have them improve.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Since it’s offshore contracting, you have to make them feel like they’re part of your team. The more frequent the communication, the better. In my case, I communicated with their engineers multiple times a day. It feels like they’re a part of the team. Even the simple things like a video call instead of an audio call, help you develop a little bit more trust.

**The Review** — Jan 31, 2020

**Feedback Summary**: The website is live and already sees 20%–25% user retention, exceeding the client’s expectations. Rootstrap delivered a high-quality user-friendly website with effective brand materials. Their expertise combined with their flexibility has made for a seamless collaboration.
""Rootstrap is made up of highly responsive and great collaborators."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the head of product for WalletJoy, a personal finance brand. Our parent company specializes in online lead generation.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We needed UI/UX and development help with building our website.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

WalletJoy is predominantly a content-driven site that provides personal finance guidance. Rootstrap built it on WordPress.

Before building the site, Rootstrap also helped create the brand strategy and define the design system. That included high-level brand and style guidelines. Our side was driving that strategy, but Rootstrap played a huge part in making sure we were thinking of the right things. Their expertise led to valuable and critical input into that strategy definition.

What is the team composition?

We worked with three engineers, two product designers, a design director who helped with the strategy, and a resource for visual design and brand design.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

One of my peers in grad school works at Rootstrap. I brought their team into the evaluation process and judged them on two major criteria. First, we wanted our site to follow SEO best practices. We look at portfolios that demonstrated that kind of web work, and Rootstrap stood out. Second, they had a lot of flexibility in their operating model, which made it easier for us to accept the risk. (This was our first partnership with a third-party vendor.)

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started in January 2019. We’re still working together, but going forward, we’ll just have a one-person team.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

It’s definitely early in the lifecycle of the product, but we’re already seeing 20%–25% user retention, which is beyond what we expected at this stage. That’s a testament to the work we did with Rootstrap on the brand side. It also shows that the site experience is friendly, intuitive, and well-done.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

We don’t share an office or a time zone so collaboration has been a huge part of this process as we build this site from scratch. Rootstrap is made up of highly responsive and great collaborators. We’ve had no issues with communication and project management. That’s a huge part of the success we’ve seen. We use Slack for communication and Trello for ticketing as well as the development and design work.

What did you find most impressive about them?

From both a development and design side, UI/UX is something we’re not strong at as a company. Rootstrap brought that to the site. They helped us define the site and product design. We continue to iterate. They’ve also been really helpful to us being adaptable and agile.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The engineering team has the ability to get the site up quickly, which is fantastic and what we needed. But now, as we’re more mature as a company, the speed takes away from the DevOps process. We’ve sacrificed some efficiency and best practices, leading to QA that could’ve been avoided.

Any advice for potential customers?

Rootstrap is a very talented team. Try to establish a lot of things ahead of time. That will set up a process and structure that the entire team can follow from the beginning.

**Feedback Summary**: User feedback regarding the MVP was positive. Along with their skilled involvement in development work, Rootstrap significantly benefitted the client’s internal processes. Their collaborative approach complemented their responsive workflow.
""Rootstrap invests their time in resources that ensure company success."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the CEO and co-founder of a software startup.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We initially worked with Rootstrap when our business was first starting. Our team didn’t have a technical co-founder, so we hired Rootstrap to figure out the technical requirements of our platform.

Once we had a technical co-founder, Rootstrap helped with the development of our initial backlog for the platform by creating wireframes and designs.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

During three-week sprints, we went through customer discovery, creating wireframes based on our feedback and what we envisioned for the web-based platform. Even though their team worked remotely, we collaborated to build the backlog and iterate UX designs. For the UX phase, they used InVision.

What is the team composition?

We had a core group of five people, including Ben (Founder & Chief Revenue Officer, Rootstrap) and Anthony (CTO, Rootstrap). We also worked with Rosina (UX/UI Designer & Frontend Developer, Rootstrap) and their head of engineering.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

I connected with one of their team members on LinkedIn. After viewing some of their work, we started a brief conversation. Rootstrap stood out from the crowd of development and design agencies.

From there, our conversation progressed enough for us to choose them as a partner. We hoped to set a solid foundation for building and growing our platform and business.

How much have you invested with them?

During the design sprint, we spent less than $10,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked with Rootstrap from September 2017 to November 2019.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We do all of our development and design in-house now, but we’ve kept a close relationship with the skilled team at Rootstrap. Our initial MVP, based on their design, received great feedback from our users. They set us up for success from a usability perspective, making sure the platform was intuitive.

Their work also iterated our early development practices and technologies, allowing us to create a sustainable development team and workflow. We took their best practices and implemented them within our organization.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Their team was wonderful. They were easy to work with, responsive, and accommodating throughout the process. We primarily communicated through phone and video calls. We also had a private Slack channel where we could ask or answer questions. All of our messages were responded to in 30 minutes. If they needed further clarification, we would hop on a quick call.

For the initial backlog, we used Trello, and they used their in-house tools to perform an audit of our existing codebase. Their team also recommended different technologies to leverage in our development process, which was helpful advice for a team that’s just starting.

Rootstrap focused on our company’s success. They dedicated their entire team to the project; no one was pulled in different directions.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The team at Rootstrap offers services that cater to startups and robust companies with massive teams. They also work quickly and take strong consideration in each of their projects. Rootstrap invests their time in resources that ensure company success.

A lot of other development agencies want a quick check, but Rootstrap is considerate of their client’s budget and timeline. They also make sure any work will prepare their clients in the long run.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Not really. Their work and team stood out significantly from other providers. They’re a top tier development firm.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Go in with an open mind. Their approach isn’t to make money. They’re a smart team that makes sure everything they’re doing fits for their clients. They appreciate honest feedback because it will benefit the project.

Listen to the different options because they strive to provide customized solutions within the breadth of services they offer. Across their entire team, they cover all of the required technical acumens.

"“They’re leaders in product and web development.”
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder of a national balloon delivery company. It’s currently in a beta version.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We hired Rootstrap to support us through each stage of our process, from product conception to user testing, into conversion funnels and launch.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Their team helped me test the idea by setting up landing pages, and running paid and organic media through landing pages. Our goal was to acquire email addresses and leads. Once our key performance indicators (KPIs) were solid, we built out the e-commerce site and product collection. They made offerings customizable for different aspects of the website.

Then they developed a brand style guide including mockups of what the next iteration of the site should like. Now we have a full workflow into all of the custom development we’ll do in phase two.

What is the team composition?

I’ve worked with Ben (Co-Founder, Rootstrap) and Ben (Tech Lead, Rootstrap).

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

I’ve worked with them on projects for other businesses. They’re leaders in product and web development. This is the first project we’ve done for my business, but I knew we needed to work with them.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project began in June 2019, and I’m always checking in with them.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

In a very limited rollout, we’ve made over $50,000 in sales. We’ve basically launched a business overnight.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

They are extremely organized. We communicate by sharing screens on a weekly cadence. When we're in a development cycle or a sprint, we communicate by email, text, phone. Really, everything is perfect.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They invested in developing a positive working relationship with me by walking me through the process of really testing the idea, coaching me, and building my confidence in their skill. When vendors approach a business relationship from that angle, they establish a partnership based on trust and respect, not dollars.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything; everything has gone smoothly.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

They give you homework, so you should put in the effort for that initial work they give you. It will put you in the right place to successfully manage each other’s time efficiently.

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am the founder and CEO of GiveTide, an app designed to make charitable giving a seamless and easy part of your everyday life by making it about your inspiration instead of your financial capability

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We were looking for someone to develop a prototype of our app before we had funding.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Rootstrap developed our mobile app. About halfway through building the prototype, we received funding and continued working with them to build the full version of the app. Their team integrated several different API into the iOS app. They also added features that we didn’t have the technical skills to produce ourselves.

What is the team composition?

We’ve worked with quite a few different people but our project manager is our main point of contact.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

We did a Google search for development shops and came up with a list of about 20 based on reviews and our first impressions. After narrowing it down to the top four via phone interviews, the CEO of Rootstrap went above and beyond to show us the longterm value of the app. We decided to work with Rootstrap and I’m really glad we did.

How much have you invested with them?

We have invested more than $100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our engagement with Rootstrap began in January 2017. The app itself launched in October 2017, although we continue to work with them.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Rootstrap’s work is flawless. They’ve never failed to deliver. As an early-stage startup, we move fast and make decisions just as fast. Despite that, they’ve always delivered value. Anytime their work doesn’t reach the standard we’re used to from them, they go above and beyond to make sure they remedy that.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Our teams usually communicate through Slack and either Zoom or Google Hangouts. Their team is very organized. We’ve never had an issue and they’re incredibly flexible whenever we need to move a meeting or push something back.

What did you find most impressive about them?

With zero exceptions, every member of the Rootstrap team brings something new to the table. They go beyond being just professionally capable. I genuinely consider some of them to be friends. Rootstrap has a really strong culture.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, everything has been great.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Make sure you’re not going in there expecting your words to be law. As developers, they can open up a whole new avenue of value.

""They’re clearly established in the web design industry—they’ve worked with big clients and it shows in their work."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the principal of a consulting group, we provide copywriting and other services for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs).

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

I hired Rootstrap to redesign my website since I don’t have any UI design experience as a copywriter.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Rootstrap redesigned my existing website. They polished and fine-tuned the features on the platform based on the wireframes and sketches I provided them with. Their team also helped me overcome development hurdles I didn’t have the resources to handle.

What is the team composition?

I mostly worked with five people, including a project manager. I was in contact with Ben (Founder & CRO, Rootstrap), too.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

Ben and I got acquainted through a Facebook group and I noticed he was pretty prolific on LinkedIn. After doing some research, I thought they’d be a good fit because of their tech background and location in California.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from October–November 2019.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

After they finished working on the website, the quality had significantly improved. It came out much better than if I had done it myself since I don’t have that same web design background. Their team is full of top-tier designers and it showed through their professional, polished work.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

They did well at managing the work—I was never in the dark about any updates or timelines. Their transparency about the deliverables was great, so I always knew when different stages would be finished. When I worked with other agencies, they weren’t as responsive as Rootstrap was. We communicated over Slack and they kept me updated every couple of days.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re clearly established in the web design industry—they’ve worked with big clients and it shows in their work. They get the job done right and on time.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I can’t think of anything at the moment.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Check out their portfolio and figure out if they match your needs. Do your due diligence and see if they’ve completed a project similar to the one you’re working on.

When faced with a challenge, their team made adjustments to solve the problem. They’re very collaborative and have become an extension of the in-house development team.
"“I appreciate that they’ve adapted our culture and have really become a part of it.”
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the Chief Operating Officers for a business services provider.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We needed to build technology on a tighter timeframe than we had the resources to do ourselves.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

They helped us expand our proprietary software in a variety of ways, including mobile. They’ve also been helpful while we architect the direction in which our technology would go. They also integrated different processes and technologies that improved our platform and overall processes.

What is the team composition?

We have several points of contact on the dev ops, engineering, and QA automation teams. We’ve had anywhere between 2–5 people on our team depending on our business needs. We’ve also had a lot of interaction with Ben (Co-founder, Rootstrap) and Anthony (Co-founder, Rootstrap).

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

I got referred to Rootstrap by a former colleague that I really trust. I vetted several firms from different parts of the world and ended up choosing Bootstrap, not just because of his recommendation, but also because of my interactions with the team or even from the first round of interviews.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began talking in April 2018 and started working together a few months later. Since then, our partnership has been ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

It’s enabled us to have more features, and get to market in a quicker fashion than we would have by ourselves. They’ve really become our tech management team as we’ve filled those roles. It has really helped us grow our technology team as well.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re very responsive. We have daily stand-ups, or something along those lines, for each project they’re working on. Our primary point of contact on their side is really active and pulls resources together for whatever we need.

I really appreciate that, when there have been miscommunications, they’ve been really open. If something didn’t work well, they figured out how they could do it differently and made a few shifts.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’ve been very collaborative. They’re like an extension of our team, which is how we work best. I appreciate that they’ve adapted our culture and have really become a part of it.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We’ve has a variety of folks with different skill levels on our account. Most have been wonderful, but there have been a few that weren’t a good fit.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

They’ve been successful in both ongoing partnerships and standalone projects. I think it’s really important to have clearly set deliverables and to establish guidelines on how your company runs to let them understand how you operate and fit in.

We are able to run a genetic analysis and within 24 hours deliver individual workouts, meal plans, and purchase options to our users.

We started with a planning phase in which we outlined what the scope of the project would be and what different features we needed to launch the MVP. Once we were aligned there, we kicked off the project and built the app over almost a year of full-scale development scrums.

What is the team composition?

I worked with a team of about 5 people, including the founder, a scrum master, a designer, and backend and frontend engineers.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

I was introduced to Ben (Founder, Rootstrap) through a friend of mine who is a lawyer, and I felt that he understood and believed in the vision and would be able to do what was needed to execute the project.

How much have you invested with them?

I spent about $300,000 in total.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project ran from around June 2018–November 2019, although we are continuing to track and tweak the product.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Our first campaign is running right now. We are tracking all of the engagement analytics but haven’t analyzed that yet, so I don’t have any data-driven feedback so far.

In general, people report learning much more about their DNA as it pertains to their health and wellness than they can on other platforms. Our focus is on helping people turn that knowledge into action, and we’re proving successful in that mission so far.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

They are always very responsive. I communicate with them via phone and Google Hangouts, as well as Slack on a more day-to-day basis.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their team is uniquely willing to go above and beyond to mentor a first-time founder. Ben’s support is unwavering, and they are all committed to finding new ways to make the project as successful as possible.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I think there is an opportunity for their middle to upper management to get closer to the project to understand and provide feedback a little more actively, but that is the only suggestion I have.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

My advice would be to narrow down your MVP to the most basic case so that you can hit the ground running as quickly as possible.

**Feedback Summary**: With aesthetically pleasing and heavily-trafficked pages, Rootstrap was praised for providing the highest-quality work of any of the companies that collaborated on this project. They also willingly provided weekly project updates through the required software, impressing their client.
"“They handled this project expertly.”
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the president of Trailways.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We hired them to address UI/UX issues we faced in developing new pages for attracting traffic and SEO on a nationwide level.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

When I came into this project, I had a smaller team and worked with many third parties. I was looking to expand my team, even though I was comfortable with both my internal and external teams. They fit into a part of a large revamp of our entire digital experience, managing much of the UI/UX work. In addition to the upgrades, they also created new designs for us, which can be difficult for a new vendor. They used Adobe Illustrator, Adobe XD, and Sketch to deliver the project, which I requested.

However, they jumped right in and actually came up with new features to make our products more competitive in the market. For instance, they helped us think through how customers search for ticket purchases between cities. Their services and features connected cities fluidly.

What is the team composition?

I worked with two offshore developers and two state-side developers. For the developers in the United States, one person was more focused on UI and the other concentrated on coding.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

I was recommended to Rootstrap. After three months, I began negotiating with them about price and types of services, whether that be design, coding, or ideation. While I was initially a bit hesitant about handing them their first few design tasks, they quickly proved their skill to me.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent five figures on their services.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project ran from July–August 2019.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Handling a large portion of our digital upgrade, they completed everything on time and on budget. The pages they worked on have yielded a good ROI. Traffic is high, and the design quality is excellent. Of all of my vendors, they produced the best work on this most recent project. I fully intend to continue doing business with them.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

They presented progress to us on a weekly basis, using the software that I requested.

What did you find most impressive about them?

While I typically wouldn’t leave a review for a partner, I didn’t hesitate to do so for Rootstrap. They handled this project expertly.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don’t have anything at the moment.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be clear with your budget, timeline, and design guidelines. They’ll perform great.

""All of the clients appreciate their work."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder & CEO of a marketing agency.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

I hired Rootstrap to assist with product development, defining a roadmap and product for mobile apps.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

The team at Rootstrap assisted with the design and development of iOS and Android mobile applications for our clients. One was a content app, and the other was an e-commerce app. Their team took stakeholders through the process of defining the applications, going into the cost, build, project length, and user experience. We also had a client that wanted a website and mobile app developed for their task and memory concept.

What is the team composition?

Ben (Founder & Chief Revenue Officer, Rootstrap) and David (CEO, Rootstrap) were our main points of contact.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

Some friends in the LA tech space recommended Rootstrap to me. I decided to work with them because they have the mindset of entrepreneurs, putting themselves in the place of founders and stakeholders for the companies they work with.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent between $150,000–$180,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked with Rootstrap from June 2018 to January 2019.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The feedback has been excellent. All of the clients appreciate their work. The products work well, and our clients have been able to go on and receive funding.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

I was impressed with their responsiveness. We have regular calls and meetings. Slack and email are our primary communication channels.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The reason I keep working with Rootstrap is their team's transparency. They will let me or the clients know if something isn’t worth pursuing or if it wastes resources.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There’s nothing that stuck out that I had a major issue with. Sometimes, clients said that they wished that their price was a bit more reasonable, but the value they provide is worth it. There are cheaper developers, but that could mean having to redo the projects later on.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Do as much preparation and thinking before an engagement starts with anyone you work with. Be as organized as you can.

**The Review** — Nov 25, 2019

**Feedback Summary**: Though the app is not complete yet, the project is on schedule to result in a timely launch. Rootstrap, meeting all deadlines and communicating frequently, is a skilled partner in development. They’re flexible and helpful, though a more laid out schedule could benefit the project.
""The team leads have been very communicative. Any problem we have, they adapt immediately to help us."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the co-founder and CEO of a sports startup.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We hired Rootstrap to develop a progressive web app to make signing up more efficient for our users. We also wanted their support in getting out of bootstrapping-mode and use the money we’ve fundraised to bring our business into reality.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

We started off with a discovery phase. They took a week or two to define what we’re looking for and determining what type of app would be the best option. Once we decided to do a web app with Rootstrap, they built the customized frontend so users can sign up for classes. They’re also building out the infrastructure of the backend so we can keep track of our referees, session experience managers, and others.

What is the team composition?

We began the discovery phase with Ben (Founder & CRO, Rootstrap) and now Luciano (Product Owner, Rootstrap) is our lead.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

We decided to use their team after following a recommendation from a friend.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent around $65,000, so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our engagement started in October 2019.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

So far, the development is going well. They’re on track with our initial timeline to successfully launch the web app.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Their team is very responsive. We mostly communicate using Slack, and we use it all day to address anything that needs attention. Since this is the first time we’ve developed an app, there have been a few miscommunications but nothing out of the ordinary. It’s like building a house, you can scope all you want, but until you actually start, you won’t know what’s going to happen.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The team leads have been very communicative. Any problem we have, they adapt immediately to help us. For example, we might need to cut down some areas of the scope, and Luciano is helping us make decisions on what we need now versus later.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It’d be helpful if they could do a week by week schedule so we have an idea of where we’re at in the process. It’s been a little challenging to know what comes next in the process beyond the timeline schedule we have.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Ask for a schedule upfront.

#### Prototyping & UI/UX Design for Events Startup
**The Project**
- Services: UX/UI Design
- Project size: $10,000 to $49,999
- Project length: Jan. - July 2019

**Project Summary**: Starting from scratch, Rootstrap produced the prototype of a ticket resale platform. Consulting with the client, they created wireframes before developing a high-fidelity, click-through model of the product.

Founder, Events Startup

- Client size: 1-10 Employees
- Review Type: Phone Interview

**The Review** — Nov 22, 2019

**Feedback Summary**: Rootstrap successfully delivered a product prototype that’s empowered the client to pitch their business idea to investors. They were truly committed to the project’s success. What’s more, their talented team are seemingly able to intuit users’ thoughts and actions, leading to great UX/UI design.
"“They’re truly capable of understanding how a typical user acts and thinks.”
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the creator of a mobile app that serves as a reverse auction platform for event tickets. It enables ticket resellers to sell their tickets instantly without having to create a listing. The platform features an automated bidding functionality that streamlines the resale process.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We wanted to build a product prototype that we could take to investors and advisors. All we had was the concept, so we were looking for a tech partner that could help us flesh the idea out and create something tangible.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

We first consulted Rootstrap about the app’s core functionalities and designs. In the design sprint that followed these talks, Rootstrap delivered wireframes: black and white sketches of what the app would look like.

Then, Rootstrap converted these wireframes into a colorful, high-fidelity prototype. Their UX/UI designers developed a clickable model which we were able to integrate into our pitch decks.

This high-fidelity prototype is different from an MVP, which we’re currently seeking funding for. It’s more of a click-through design model that showcases the app’s functionalities to prospective investors.

What is the team composition?

My primary point of contact was Ben (Tech Lead, Rootstrap), who served as a project manager that bridged the gap between myself and their designers. I also had several conversations with their founder, Ben (CEO, Rootstrap). I also worked with several designers, but I particularly recommend Santiago “Mojo” (Developer, Rootstrap).

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

They were referred to me by someone in my school’s network. We interviewed several similar firms, but Rootstrap stood out to me because of their creative direction and understanding of the product. It was also convenient that they were located in LA since our business operates in the entertainment sector.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent around $15,000 thus far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together in January 2019 and wrapped up in July. We’re not currently working together, but I plan on re-engaging them when I have the funding to produce an MVP.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

It would be impossible to pitch my product without the prototype they’ve created, so I’m really grateful for their work. They really grasped my vision for the product; not only did they respond to my specific requests, but also implemented creative designs that I wouldn’t have come up with myself.

They also improved upon my ideas and requests, which I really appreciated. They’re truly capable of understanding how a typical user acts and thinks.

How did Rootsrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Their communication was incredible, which was a crucial component of our project’s success. We used email to communicate, and they were very responsive throughout the engagement. While the project’s development phase was priced at an hourly rate, the project manager gave me frequent updates free of charge.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They go above and beyond to take care of their clients. In one instance, one of their team members reached out to me when he was in town, doing technical work. Then, they took me out to dinner, where we discussed the project. You really get the sense that they work to ensure your satisfaction and success.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I can’t think of anything.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be cautious of the road ahead, because it’s challenging to pitch a product to investors with just prototype designs. If you’re looking to build a full MVP with Rootstrap, expect additional steps and costs.

**The Review** — Oct 11, 2019

**Feedback Summary**: The platform launched quickly thanks to Rootstrap’s efforts. The team delivered high-quality development work and worked seamlessly alongside the client’s in-house team. Their reliability, flexibility, and timeliness made them a great partner to work with.
""If you have an in-house team that you need to expand for special projects, Rootstrap is the team to grow with."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the CEO of an audio technology company. We offer a platform that does real-time speech recognition of live audio streams.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

We received series seed funding and were racing to get the product out on platforms that our target market used. We needed expertise in delivering the Android Auto version of our app.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Our platform uses Android’s built-in voice recognition function and expands it to speech recognition. It delivers a speaker’s works to our search engine so that others can search for the audio while the speaker is still talking.

Rootstrap helped extend our in-house team’s expertise for two assets: one for our web extension, and another for Android Auto.

What is the team composition?

We worked with four people, including a project manager.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

One of our early investors introduced us to Rootstrap. We had heard about their reputation for masterclass work and knew that their clientele matches our size and needs.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent just over $100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project ran from May–August 2019.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Rootstrap’s work allowed us to launch on Android Auto, which was a big success for us. I think it’s rare for a startup with the resources we had to make it on so many platforms so quickly.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Rootstrap was extremely responsive. They’re a great extension of our in-house team. They folded right into our Jira board that our engineering team uses.

What did you find most impressive about them?

If you have an in-house team that you need to expand for special projects, Rootstrap is the team to grow with.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Rootstrap is used to having to take over a project with clients that have no design expertise. However, we have in-house designers and wanted to work together with their team rather than give up all control. However, because Rootstrap’s project managers are so easy to work with, we overcame it.

Any advice for potential customers?

Be super clear about your expertise and what you need and don’t need from Rootstrap—their team can do so much and is eager to help.

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder of an online video storytelling platform.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

I wanted to meet with a development firm to cultivate and refine our product design.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

We worked with them for a full development cycle to build an MVP. Rootstrap helped me design the UX/UI of the platform and we mapped out everything step-by-step from a user perspective. The fronted uses React.js, S3, and AWS CloudFront. The backend uses Rails API, a PostgreSQL database, and deploys into Heroku.

What is the team composition?

I worked with their VP of strategy, a tech lead, a UX designer, and a scrum master.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

We met Rootstrap while we were developing a road map for the solution. They had the technical capabilities to assist us with the project.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve invested more than $70,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together in October 2018 and completed the project in January 2019.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’re happy with the team overall and the MVP they created.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

They were always available, despite one of our designers who was working from Uruguay. We used Slack for communication and they were never late for a meeting. Collaboration might have been smoother if we were all in the same room but overall, I was pleased with how effectively the team managed our project.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The team leadership was phenomenal and the VP of strategy was very professional. When I had an issue or complaint, they addressed it directly and adequately. I felt comfortable speaking to their leadership about anything.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I think they could’ve assigned a more seasoned designer for one of the positions on my team. Additionally, I think the communication could have been better about what I could expect in terms of graphic design and art.

""Rootstrap is a creative team that’s easy to work with."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder and CEO of a traditional matchmaking application. We’re bridging the gap between dating apps and traditional high-priced matchmaking services.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Rootstrap?

I hired Rootstrap to build my product. I had an idea about what I wanted the app to look like and do, but I’ve never made one before. I knew that talking to them and having them take a look was the best way to make my vision a reality.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

We had a six-week onboarding process that laid out the best ways to develop and design the app. Rootstrap recommended a native iOS application. I wanted the design to be sleek and high-end, using black and gold to give the app a classy look. I discussed how I wanted the designs and layout to be. They improved upon my ideas.

What is the team composition?

I worked with a team of four. There was a scrummaster, frontend developer, backend developer, and a designer.

How did you come to work with Rootstrap?

A friend referred them to me. I liked that Rootstrap wasn’t full of yes-men. I had met with several product developers that said they could do anything and made the process seem shiny and smooth. The team at Rootstrap was different, pushing back on some of my ideas. At first, that threw me off, but then I realized that they were helping me build a better product.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent about $100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our engagement was between September 2018–February 2019.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

It’s still new, so there’s still so much to measure, but we’re already receiving revenue, which is fantastic. The app has over 8,000 downloads.

How did Rootstrap perform from a project management standpoint?

Our teams communicated through Slack and worked in sprints. On Mondays, we talked about the plans for the week, and then on Fridays, we would go over what was successful and wrap up the week. It was a successful and smooth process working with Rootstrap. Throughout the engagement, they were responsive.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Rootstrap is a creative team that’s easy to work with. I personally loved being challenged by them. If I had an idea, they would suggest other ways. Sometimes it’s hard when you have a vision and don’t see how things could be done differently. They helped me understand different options and let me choose what I thought was best.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything at the moment. It’s a learning process.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Before starting the development process, clients should make sure that they thoroughly understand all of the sprints and milestones and the time it will take. Allow for extra time. While we were finished with the development phase in January, it took a month to receive approval from Apple. People think that once the app is completed, it will be the app store right away, but it’s not that easy. It’s a whole process where Apple performs a lot of testing. Clients should remember that even though development is completed, the app won’t launch the next day.

I hired Rootstrap to audit my offshore development and UX teams to ensure they're following best practices and building a proper foundation for scalability.

What were your goals for this project?

I set out to perform a comprehensive audit of my UX and development work to ensure the app is ready for launch. If the audit results in failure, Rootstrap provides a path for the offshore teams to course correct.

**SOLUTION**
How did you select this vendor?

I considered over 15 digital agencies and selected Rootstrap based on their previous work and excellent reviews, along with their leaderships' strong responses during the proposal process.

Describe the project in detail.

I hire Rootstrap at the end of each development milestone to conduct a single sprint audit of the delivered code, UX, and infrastructure. They communicate throughout the sprint and work well with my teams to provide the results of the audit and their findings. I’ve already used this information to switch to a better vendor.

What was the team composition?

We’re working with senior developers who specialize in frontend, backend, web, and mobile languages. This team is led on and off by Anthony (CTO, Rootstrap), who’s a fantastic communicator that consistently provides valuable insight into our project.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The audits have helped determine that our first development team wouldn't be able to complete the app to our standards. Thankfully, we were early enough in development that this decision saved us months and thousands of dollars.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

It’s been extremely effective thanks to their ability to take initiative and communicate. Additionally, they’re able to respond quickly throughout their audit process.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They’ve maintained the highest level of professionalism while providing critical feedback. This, coupled with everyone’s excellent service (from the CEO on down), is the reason I return to Rootstrap over and over.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Their price was a little high for my leadership team, but Rootstrap is continually proving their value. If I had the budget, I would’ve hired them to develop our entire application.

**The Review** — Mar 6, 2018

**Feedback Summary**: The wireframes expedited product development and provided a solid foundation for later stages of the project. Neon Roots’ team was efficient and friendly, but they could have offered additional support.
"“Their help was invaluable and moved me from idea to action.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your company and your position there.

I’m the CEO of The Stamp and Coin Place, a company that specializes in implementing technology for an old industry. We’ve invented software for sorting and distributing a high volume of coins.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
For what projects/services did your company hire Neon Roots?

Since we were starting from scratch, we needed an experienced team to wireframe our product.

What were your goals for this project?

We needed a prototype that could be shown and shared with potential investors and customers. We wanted a clean and intuitive app with image storage, a forum, and other functionalities.

**SOLUTION**
How did you select this vendor?

I did extensive research for a company that offered such a service, but almost everyone I talked to charged an hourly rate with no promises on performance. Meanwhile, the non-hourly rate quotes were evasive about deliverables. Fortunately, I quickly clicked with Neon Roots’ principals and their team.

Describe the project in detail.

They created wireframes for our app, which could take photos of coins and allow users to quickly share the images on social media. After discussing the project over the phone, they sent me a questionnaire and a couple of follow-up emails. I then flew to Los Angeles with my main development person to meet with their team. After only one round of ideation and two rounds of wireframe tweaking, I had the basics of what I was looking for. Eventually, we decided to develop it ourselves.

What was the team composition?

Neon Roots’ CEO oversaw the work of two people from their team.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We knew practically nothing about this type of work, but Neon Roots made it easier for us to see what the final product would look like. The experience and outcome helped us find our way much faster.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Our communication was great. Poor communication makes things more complicated, but that was not the case with this company.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

I was impressed with how easily they got things done. They were also a genuinely nice team.

Are there any areas for improvement?

It would have been great to have the option to pay for questions even after the project was done. I had several questions along the way but felt that I would be imposing if I were to reach out.

**The Review** — Mar 27, 2017

**Feedback Summary**: The deliverables have been flawlessly executed, and the communication from Neon Roots has been excellent. Their team is always on time and is completely transparent with deadlines and feedback. Their business and their solutions offer businesses exceptional value for the cost.
""They provided clarity where we were unsure and flawless execution everywhere else."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am the CEO of GiveTide, and we are building a mobile application intended to help people integrate philanthropy into their everyday lives.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Neon Roots?

Our original goal was to develop a functional prototype of an app that would allow us to raise money for the app’s complete development.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Our overall thesis of what we’re trying to accomplish with our mobile app is to move the entire philanthropy industry away from the concept of financial capability and more toward motivation as the only requirement needed to contribute to and participate in causes that you care about.

With Neon Roots, we began the initial drafts of the prototype while simultaneously developing our business and networking with potential clients. About halfway through the process, we raised the money for the project, so the functional prototype was no longer necessary. However, Neon Roots was still able to provide a mutually beneficial solution. Instead of making them finish a prototype that we would no longer need, they helped translate the remaining credit that we had, so to speak, and transition smoothly into full-time development of the mobile app with their development firm. We’re going to stick with an iOS version of the app first and validate the concept before we take the plunge and develop an app for Android as well.

How did you come to work with Neon Roots?

We are first-time entrepreneurs, and we didn't know anything about the industry, so we went out and interviewed several firms ranging from the big development shops to developers in India. There wasn't anything quantitative about our search process. We based our decision more on our gut feeling of the team based on the conversations we had had with them. We started out with Google searches, compiled a list of 25 companies, and then narrowed it down from there based on their interactions over email. From there, we had a list of around 10 or so, and we got on the phone with all of them. It was a little more difficult to then narrow those shops down to two or three, including Neon Roots and another firm.

We were interested in Neon Roots because they seemed to have a different approach. Instead of just being yes-men and quoting your project, they seemed to really care. Before they knew anything about us, the CEO got on the phone with us, and we had a nice long discussion. They came back to us with a tailor-made proposal based on our situation, and that really impressed us and put them over the top. We appreciated that they would take the time to focus on our needs and offer a solution. We decided to go with them because we liked their style from the outset.

How much have you invested with Neon Roots?

I’d say we invested a little less than $100,000 with Neon Roots.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Neon Roots in December 2016.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

The MVP [minimum viable product] Neon Roots built for us led to our first round of financing. To that extent, Neon Roots delivered completely. We’re looking forward to that sort of execution on a larger scale. We’re still in development right now, so I can't speak yet to the quality of the product. What I can speak to is the clarity with which the developers have latched onto our ideas.

How did Neon Roots perform from a project management standpoint?

Project management is Neon Roots’ bread and butter. Their company consists of incredible people, and their business offers exceptional value. For our team, it was like having a seasoned entrepreneur as a co-founder instead of a company that’s eager to please but really only interested in your money. They provided clarity where we were unsure and flawless execution everywhere else. Our project is structured so that we have a point guy assigned to our project. He’s essentially the guy who communicated all timeline and technical details to us because we don’t have a technical co-founder on the team. Additionally, you also have access to all of the individuals behind the scenes who are doing the design, coding, etc., so we have transparent, efficient communication. It’s always easy to get ahold of them; it’s not like you have to pull teeth to get them on the phone. It’s been an awesome experience. I couldn't have asked for a better partner.

What did you find most impressive about Neon Roots?

You want to choose Neon Roots because they’re not just yes-men. They’re not just going to sit there, blow smoke, and tell you your ideas are awesome when they might have other ideas. They’ll tell you what’s up. They’ll be straight with you. To that extent, it’s more like having a co-founder and less like having a third-party company performing specific deliverables that you can’t handle with the team. What was valuable in our experience was their strategy and the overarching clarity with which it was communicated to us.

Are there any areas Neon Roots could improve?

I don't have any complaints about Neon Roots at all. We were impressed by their delivery every step of the way.

**The Review** — Feb 15, 2017

**Feedback Summary**: Neon Roots provided an exceptional experience throughout the different stages of development, laying the groundwork for an ongoing relationship. The Rootstrap process they yielded the MVP was instrumental in raising 30k from investors, and they have received overwhelmingly positive feedback.
""We didn’t have many expectations coming into the project and they’ve blown us away."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

Starving Artist is a new platform for musicians to connect in their local area, whether you’re a producer, singer, rapper, singer-songwriter, or an instrumentalist. My brother and I were always having trouble finding people to help complete the songs we produced, so we decided to make a platform ourselves. I’m the co-founder.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Neon Roots?

We wanted to develop our idea further. We don’t know how to code and there were a lot of unknowns in the industry, so we needed people who had the knowledge to help us.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

First, we went through their Rootstrap process, where we talked about our idea and we refined it to the MVP [minimum viable product]. They conducted some market research in order to find the competitors in the industry. Then, we developed a plan to monetize everything. They made some wireframes that included the main features, and at the end of the process, we had a report that gave us a clear idea of who our audience was, the problem we were solving, and how we would make money from it. After that, they started development on the iOS app. They broke the project into sprints and built the frontend so we could start using it. We still have to develop the backend to allow people to connect with other people.

How did you come to work with Neon Roots?

We went to a Tony Robbins seminar in Florida and a day after we got home from that, we were on Instagram and we saw one of the Neon Roots ads. They were advertising that they had built an app for Tony Robbins. They were the first company we reached out to. We did contact other firms but we started building a good relationship with Neon Roots right away. They connected us with our favorite artist, so we were able to pitch him our idea. We saw some of the work that Neon Roots had done and liked their mindset of starting lean and working lean as you build up. It seemed like they were everything we were looking for.

How much have you invested with Neon Roots?

We have spent between $50,000 and $200,000 so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started to work with them in April 2016 and the work is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

Since we only have the frontend built, we can access it on our phone through a platform called TestFlight. Once the backend is developed, we will do beta testing. The project so far has given us a good idea of what to show investors, and we’ve been able to start pitching to them. That’s how we were able to raise $30,000 after the Rootstrap process. Everyone we’ve talked to has given positive feedback, including our favorite artist and other big artists in the electronic music scene.

How did Neon Roots perform from a project management standpoint?

We communicate through Skype and Google Hangouts. We’re usually in contact with the CEO and the development team. They keep us updated on everything.

What did you find most impressive about Neon Roots?

Their Rootstrap process is something that works for them and that’s what they have you stick to. They nail down the MVP and then build from there.

Are there any areas Neon Roots could improve?

I can’t think of anything. Their work looks good and we’ve learned a lot. They’ve been great to work with.

- Review Type: Phone Interview

**The Review** — Oct 17, 2016

**Feedback Summary**: Neon Roots received a near-perfect score, constantly giving feedback on the project, showing dedication to maintaining a schedule, and delivering meticulous execution and work ethic during their engagement.
""They've been on top of things – extremely meticulous and diligent. The biggest thing is I can tell they care, and it's not just another project for them."

"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

Skillzz LLC is a marketplace for employees and employers. I am the CEO.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Neon Roots?

I had this germination of an idea, and I came to them to vet it out. They do this process called Rootstrap where they do a competitive analysis. It's a sprint – it's one week. They do a competitive analysis and develop a full-on prototype. It started with that, and we went into development 3 or 4 weeks later.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

We're doing a full web app hybrid – a mobile responsive website that will be a 12-week long process with them. They use Ruby on Rails. When we first met, I wanted to develop an iOS app. That's what we Rootstrapped, and that's what we built the prototype for. Then, all of us cumulative called an audible. What's great about them is they were able to switch gears quickly and started developing a hybrid mobile responsive web app instead. That all took place very quickly. Within a week, we had a new prototype for a website.

How did you come to work with Neon Roots?

I went online and Googled Los Angeles app developers. I called five or six, and I interviewed three. What was the most impressive about Ben [Lee, co-founder and CEO of Neon Roots] and the team was how hands-on they all are. I felt like I wasn't just getting people who were going to code and develop. Instead, I was getting business minds and innovative young people who understood my vision – what I wanted to do – and could contribute in a way that wasn't just technical but also very meaningful on the business side. That's what attracted me to them. That, and I was able to go into their office.

How much have you invested with Neon Roots?

The cost was $110,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started in June [2016].

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

The feedback so far is that people have been impressed with the velocity. They've been surprised at the velocity that things have gone and how quickly they've been able to create what we've done so far in the span of time. It's been 6 weeks of development. They work in sprints. The quality looks great. I'm very impressed with it.

What did you find most impressive about Neon Roots?

It would be the team that has been working on my project. There's probably 10 of them in the office. They all care a lot. They believe in the product. I don't feel like they're just building another game or another app. They like the project. They come to me with creative ideas. I think if someone's looking for a big group of yes men, Neon Roots would not be their choice for development. I could not recommend them less if people just want to hear, "Yes, I will be whatever you want." They're going to be questioning you the whole way, trying to build the best product. They're an opinionated group of people – for sure.

Are there any areas Neon Roots could improve?

The only thing would've been to meet my team before Rootstrap. You go through Rootstrap and have one team. Then, when you go to development, it's a totally different team. It was different to have the people who you've been working with for that beginning sprint totally change.

**The Review** — Jul 19, 2016

**Feedback Summary**: Neon Roots was casual and informal in their process, but they contributed significant industry expertise. Their primary resource was timely, responsive, and articulate. Their key strength was their discernment in which projects they took on, meaning each one got personal attention.

""They had a nice vibe and they have a terrific product offering."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

We are in the midst of developing a webinar series to support a future app that we are hoping to develop which is intended to support single person and small businesses with the information to properly run their companies.

My wife and I are the two principals. I’m cofounder and co-owner.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Neon Roots?

We see a difference between the company and the business. Our own experience was such that there’s very little support out there for the company especially when you’re in a growth mode or you’re operating in multiple states. There’s very little support or information to help growth occur. There are a million things that will help you with your business - with business management, employees, getting customers, but almost nothing that’ll make sure that you have the right insurance, teach you how to talk to an attorney, or to make sure that you have proper processes set up in your company so you are compliant and functional.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Neon Roots helped us with the app. They had a program called Rootstrap which I would describe as a pre-development development. You take several meetings with them. They ask you a ton of questions and try to pull out from you what your real goals are and what you want the app to do. They give you a lot of feedback which helped us make decisions. It was very valuable. They were generous with their feedback and experience, and that helped us refine what we wanted to do with the app. Then from there, they helped us build out a template. They do some storyboards about how it’s going to look. They do custom backlogs as well.

If you take every potential story through a potential customer’s eyes and you say “I am an X and I want to do a Y”, you build out all these situations and that’s called a backlog. They create those for you. They apply a point system to those which they use to give you a quote for full development of the app. They also did some high definition click-through modelings. We have several pages of how the app would actually look. You can click through them and see how it functions, which is terrific especially when going in front of investors. I’m pretty convinced that having that in hand will go a long ways towards getting funding, especially since we are in a startup phase. Neon Roots provided us this in a fixed price in just a few weeks.

They also do their own market research and they determine whether they believe it’s a good application. If they don’t believe it or like it, then they’re not going to do the Rootstrap for you, which I think is cool. There were a number of points of very positive feedback and very encouraging movement in going through that process with them.

In the end, working with Neon Roots gave us a good look at what we could do. It gave us an idea of what the MVP should be for the app, and it gave us an idea of what it’s going to cost to build it out fully. Again, this was much cheaper than if I was wrong and I just paid an app development company to build an app for me.

How did you come to work with Neon Roots?

Neon Roots was my first choice based on what they offered. My wife and I decided that we wanted to work with a group a little closer to where we live, which is Denver. There’s a very well regarded firm in Boulder and so I took the Rootstrap description from the Neon Roots website and I turned that into a statement of work. I took the statement of work to this app development company and they looked at it and quoted it, and said that they could do it. We agreed to that and signed a deal.

I went up and had the first couple of meetings, and after the first couple of meetings, the owner said that they were overwhelmed and that there were too many options. She said that they thought we should do this a different way and gave us a whole different quote and took our agreement and ignored it. In that whole process, she decided that she had earned about 50% of our deposit and wanted us to put another deposit up so we could move forward working under her new plan, which would be on an hourly time and materials basis. Needless to say, we said no and fired them. We went back to Neon Roots and asked if they would take it on and they agreed. They saw all the things that the first group saw, but they had a much better grasp of what to do and how to address it. They got us the product they promised.

How much have you invested with Neon Roots?

We have spent $15,000. I thought that was very reasonable for the amount of effort they put into it and for the product that we got.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

Just to see the idea on paper was exciting. These are ideas that we’ve had for our own business. My wife is the expert when it comes to running a company and the financials. She has always wanted to have one place to capture all of these different parts of a running company. For her to see that on paper was exciting. Then, when we did the final look, my wife’s first comment was “my brain is on TV”. We did that meeting with Neon Roots via video chat and they put up the first page and she just stared at it. Through the conversation, they were very accurate in pulling out and creating what her vision was for how this app would function and how it would look. Beyond the fact that it was a great product, they were really able to bring to life the vision that my wife has been carrying around in her head for a number of years, which is fantastic.

What did you find most impressive about Neon Roots?

They’re very casual, which we appreciated. Neon Roots is very little in the way of overt formalities. The team was very encouraging and interactive. They all had feedback. The Chief Executive Officer, Ben Lee, is a visionary. He had a lot of great industry insight and application and user insights that we had not considered. Napoleon was our primary point of contact. He was always on time, always articulate, and always let us complain or applaud, but kept meetings on track. He was terrific. They had a nice vibe and they have a terrific product offering.

Are there any areas Neon Roots could improve?

No. I’m sure that other people would wish that they were a little more willing to take on their projects. We noticed in our initial meeting that Ben Lee’s partner in the business was signing letters declining projects. I think it’s terrific that they won’t take on a project that they don’t agree with or think they’re not going to enjoy. When you’re in business, it’s very hard to turn away work. If you’re able to turn away work because you have a philosophy or you’re too busy and your ethic is such that you’re willing to turn that away instead of reducing your value in other places, I think that’s very ethical. It’s a very impressive thing to do.

During a fast-paced iteration process, they offered several strong design options, and even provided assistance beyond the project scope. They were a valuable tech co-founder in the app space.

""Neon Roots is very thorough and responsive. They really vetted the market to see what was out there and not reinvent the wheel."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

Bond Shop Club is a platform dedicated to reconnecting the high end consumer with larger retailers by offering exclusive incentives that are available instore only for club members. We’re currently into development to launch at the top of 2017.

I’m the founder and Chief Executive Officer.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Neon Roots?

I had the idea for the platform and I vetted the revenue model and business idea in general over a few months in order to get the details flushed out. I didn’t have a CTO [Chief Technology Officer] at the time. So the development aspect was a very large challenge to overcome in terms of limitations and what would be an appropriate way to approach a job like this. It was something I didn’t know.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Initially, it involved iOS with expansion into Android. We’re also considering different web options.

How did you come to work with Neon Roots?

I researched different development and mobile firms dedicated to being a “tech cofounder” for a startup that didn’t have one. That’s how I came across Neon Roots. There were several companies from New York, LA, and Chicago that said they were the mobile development firm for startups. There were more that were focused on enterprise companies.

What I liked about Neon Roots was just looking at their marketing and them saying that they were going to take my startup and bring it to life. I had a call with one of their evangelists. He had a startup and also didn’t have a CTO, and he was saying how much Neon Roots really helped him to flush out his business model, and go through and create that clickable prototype which he could use to raise more funds and also to make sure he had a solid and scalable business model. From there I stayed in close contact and decided that Neon Roots would be the route I would go for building the initial prototype and vetting a business model.

How much have you invested with Neon Roots?

Between $10,000 and $50,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The initial prototype is finished. That minimum viable product was part of the Neon Roots’ bootstrap program, as well as all the deliverables in order to build out that business model.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

The bootstrap program lasted approximately two weeks. Through that time period, I had several different Skype conference calls with three different individuals. The founder of Neon Roots hopped on several of the calls. I also had a project manager as well as another CTO/business development executive that were really doing a lot more research on the market - what’s out there, what’s scalable, and the best way to approach the business.

At the end of the two weeks, they delivered a clickable prototype. They used a lot of the information based on what my target consumer was, what that market looked like in terms of market potential, and ways to market this to target that demographic. Considering this was a platform based business focused on connecting individuals with retailers, it was important to identify exactly how this product will work in terms of working with companies and retailers on the backend process.

What did you find most impressive about Neon Roots?

Neon Roots is very thorough and responsive. They really vetted the market to see what was out there and not reinvent the wheel. If I had any questions or concerns, or if I wanted to make any additions towards the ultimate framework for the app, they were very accommodating to that. They were supportive in giving me several options for development and potential business contacts. I think they do some unparalleled work, and I didn’t feel like the team just wanted to take my money. There was even some work they provided to me after the project was officially finished.

Are there any areas Neon Roots could improve?

Based on the fact that they’re working with several clients that don’t have tech cofounders, I asked for a short synopsis of the mobile capabilities and how, if I were to pitch my platform to a retailer, would I explain the technical capabilities. It would have been great if that sort of training and information was part of package from the start.

### Exi - Pioneering the future of healthcare
EXI is an evidence-based platform that analyses user health & fitness. EXI enables patients to follow personalized activity programs and monitor real-time adherence, making exercise engagement measurable. Combining decades of scientific knowledge with pioneering technology, EXI’s intelligent platform automates customized programs for each person in an easy, effective, and scalable way. Users can achieve lasting behavioral change with sophisticated motivational systems and incentives in place.

EXI approached us with a critical challenge. Their existing codebase had numerous issues hindering its performance, scalability, and maintainability. This legacy system posed a significant obstacle to their business growth and innovation initiatives, so they hired Rootstrap to help them mitigate these issues:

Legacy Codebase: EXI's software infrastructure was built on a legacy codebase, which had accumulated technical debt over time. This led to frequent bugs, performance bottlenecks, and difficulty implementing new features.

Scalability Concerns: As EXI aimed to expand its user base and offer more sophisticated services, the existing system required an increased load and concurrent user interactions. This scalability limitation threatened to impede EXI's growth trajectory.

Lack of Tests: The application had minimal documentation or automated tests. This made understanding the code even more complex and reduced the application's and the team's scalability.

### An AI-Driven Approach to Illness Detection
A cow breeding Uruguayan entrepreneur aimed to optimize the detection of a health condition in cattle known as Lameness. This condition can greatly impact animal welfare and productivity, leading to significant economic consequences for the business.Detecting Lameness early on is challenging, requiring alternative processes that offer reliable and consistent results. By observing deviations in the cow's back, an expert can identify and quantify the problem. We proposed to developer an IA model that can automatically and precisely perform this process. We researched and selected suitable algorithms for image segmentation using machine learning.  We evaluated both supervised and unsupervised options for automatic segmentation, involving intensive model training and data labeling. We utilized Mask R CNN with a labeled training dataset, COCO, to build an initial binary classifier for identifying healthy and unhealthy cows. This approach resulted in a proof of concept that revolutionizes illness detection in cattle breeding using AI and image detection capabilities.
