At SecureFlag, we teach secure coding through hands-on exercises that run in dedicated desktop environments, available in seconds through a web browser. We help our customers build/augment their AppSec training program, replacing ineffective secure coding quizzes with on-demand hands-on training. I am one of the Directors and a co-founder.

Northell is staffed with exceptionally talented professionals who are committed to delivering projects on time and in scope, even if it means working on weekends to meet crazy deadlines!

We used Slack as a communication tool, the PM was always available to get on a call on the same day and discuss further.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Along with the high level of quality output, they communicated clearly and effectively all throughout, and to top it off, all of this at a very competitive price.

Not really.

I am the CTO of Launch.Career which is a Belgian startup that focuses on connecting new graduates (and young professionals) with their dream employer. We offer students the possibility to create a profile and get spotted and approached by potential employers.

For what projects/services did your company hire Northell?

In order to be attractive to students and young professionals we had to give our platform a clean and professional look. As we are a startup we don't have in-house developers and reached out to Northell for assistance.

What were your goals for this project?

We wanted to have a very user friendly and intuitive web and mobile application. Students should be able to create a profile fast and easily follow up on incoming leads. Our landing page also had to be concise and to the point, as we only have few seconds to convince potential students and employers to onboard on our platform.

SOLUTION

How did you select Northell?

We had interviews with five different UI/UX agencies, which we found by posting our job on few online job boards. We choose to work with Northell as they understood the UX aspects are more important to us than the UI aspects, the experience of the user is key. Furthermore they already had the necessary experience of working with startups and were also not too big to introduce too much overhead in the project.

After choosing to work with Northell, we started rather quickly with a few meetings to explain and brainstorm on the concept of the application. We discussed our objectives and drafted a sitemap that showed how the application flow will look like. Afterwards the designer created wireframes that allowed us to discuss the important building blocks of each page, after which detailed web and mobile applications were created.

What was the team composition?

Initially we had discussions with the founder of the company and one of his colleagues, but rather quickly we were assigned a dedicated designer and project manager. Nowadays we still work closely together with that designer and the project manager follows up on the project for administrative purposes.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

While the application is only live in a beta stage at this moment, we have already received a lot of positive feedback from the test users. They confirm the application flow is clear and intuitive, they can create a profile fast and really like the cleanliness of the designs.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

As we work directly with the designer, the workflow is very effective. Each week we have two touchpoints in which we discuss progress (what has been done over the last few days) and next steps (what are the most important items to take up by our next meeting). I believe we can transparantely communicate with the designer and he does not hide any issues or things that are not clear, which is very important to me.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

We really like the fact the designer dares to question our input, proposes his own ideas (which are often based on experience, which we clearly lack) and presents us with clear options from which we have to choose. The designs are really good looking and exactly what we aim for. They really get what we want to achieve.

Are there any areas for improvement?

The company was rather optimistic regarding the timeline and required budget for this project. We realise we have changed our minds few times regarding certain elements, but the deadlines we agreed upon upfront were not met (not even close). This has unfortunately lead to few less pleasant situations in which our development team did not have the necessary screen designs yet, but in the end we managed to work everything thing out and we ended up with a really nice end result.

I interviewed several other firms, both on UpWork and other platforms. I selected Northell because they were competitive on price, engaged in the challenge we were trying to solve, and had clear successes from previous similar projects.

We have a ~20 year old web application that functions well for our clients, but is not optimized for marketing. Northell's work included site map, wireframes, and mockups in Figma.

What was the team composition?

I was the primary contact on our end, with some assistance from my senior employees. On the Northell side, we had a designer and project lead.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The project is still ongoing (in the mockup phase now) but earlier wireframe work was very satisfactory. They were flexible, creative, and responsive.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Given the time difference, we've worked together fairly well. We use a combination of Slack and weekly/bi-weekly zoom calls.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Being able to jump into a very niche product and add value in such a short period of time.

Are there any areas for improvement?

There have been times that the project has seemed to slow down... but our side is responsible for that as well (revisions, slow feedback, etc)

We were looking to build an easy to use, user-friendly, responsive web-based marketplace that helps connect businesses with quality staff instantly without going through the hassle of posting jobs on the portals

How did you select this vendor?

We talked to a number of designers from different platforms such as upwork, payperhour and other freelancing platforms and started interviewing the shortlisted ones including Northell. Over the interview and found the team quite professional and showed good interest in our project. In addition, their inputs were also out-of-the box which made them stand apart from the lot.

Once we shortlisted the team, we had an initial requirements session with the web designer (Vasyl), who tried to understand what stage we are at and what is the tactical and strategic objective of the project. In addition, the designer asked to send us some designs we like to help him understand our vision in terms of designs. We were provided 3 design themes to choose from. Once we narrowed down on one of them, then we continued with the selected design style.

Since we had a short term project, we were assigned a dedicated Web Designer for our project during our project duration of around 2-3 months

We launched our project in 2 phases. The first phase was to get an early feedback from our target market. In a period of only 1 month we have close to 1000 users on our platform, which was more than we expected.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

The designer we were assigned would touch base with our team every alternate day to get feedback on the designs. A video call used to take place between our team and the designer to discuss the feedback. Any feedback provided was taken up positively and fixed as agreed upon.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

The team is committed to offering the best for their clients when it comes to designs at an affordable price-point. The company is really professional and always strive hard to offer its clients the best of its service, which I believe will help them go a long way.

The team did an amazing job. If there is an area of improvement that they can work on is to commit more tightly to the deadlines.

Our goals was to develop a significantly better web app to provide a better experience for our learners and coaches.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We interviewed a lot of designers and what made Northwell stand out was their detailed process ahead of starting the project to ensure they had an in-depth understanding of how the platform works, the users of the platform, and the current roadblocks of the platform preventing purchases. This process gave us the confidence in the team that they knew exactly what they were doing.

Ahead of starting the project we uploaded videos of our current web app and filled out a detailed document explaining who our customers are so they can come back with a customer overview. The next step was developing wireframes where we worked in detail on the customer flow. This included numerous iterations so we were very close to a final process before they started work on the final designs. Once they came back with the final designs very small amounts of adjustments were needed, they really nailed it.

Vasyl is the designer we were working with, but most of our communication was with his assistant who was great. Very responsive, was great with taking my feedback and implementing it perfectly.
