BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the head of digital strategy and development for Hegnar Media, a media company based in Norway. We create a traditional newspaper and magazine, but we’ve also transitioned to delivering an online newspaper and magazine.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Profico?

When we started working with them, we were trying to build our online newspaper. However, we didn’t have software developers in-house.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Profico has developed our platform from scratch. We first engaged their software development team to build the first version of the site. Since then, we’ve expanded the team, and they handle software development. Additionally, they onboard new people. When we need someone new, Profico does the interview rounds and vests them. When they feel confident about the candidate, they propose it to us, and we decide.

The site is an online newspaper; people can browse articles and read them. One of the main differences is that our online newspaper is subscription-based, so users need to purchase a subscription to log in to read the articles behind the paywall. Currently, Profico is developing more advanced and personalized paywalls, as well as features that expand beyond a usual online newspaper. For example, we’re focusing on financial technology features to help our users watch the stock market.

What is the team composition?

In total, we’re working with 20 team members from Profico, including software developers, project managers, and designers. We currently have 16 people involved in our core product.

How did you come to work with Profico?

We bought a company in 2016, and soon after that, we planned to build the site with another company. The vendor was using Profico for software development, so they vouched for them. We saw that Profico had the expertise we were looking for; they had experience with online newspapers, so we started working with them.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent close to €2 million (approximately $1.9 million USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in May 2018, and our relationship is ongoing. Additionally, Profico has worked with us on a separate project for two years.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

As a subscription-based newspaper, the best metric is that our subscribers have gone from 16,000 to 28,000 in the past three years. We’re extremely happy about those results.

How did Profico perform from a project management standpoint?

They perform well. Since we’re in Norway, it’s challenging to be in touch with the team, so project management is vital because it becomes a gateway to the rest of the developers. Overall, they’ve been fantastic. We have a great relationship, and they’ve adjusted many roles to figure out how we can work together.

We constantly communicate through Slack. In addition, we have multiple daily meetings on Google Meet.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They stand out because they deliver multiple services in one package. Profico offers a complete set of skills; they do frontend and backend development, research, project management, design, and strategic planning. They’re more than a provider, so we consider them an essential part of our product development team. Overall, working with them is great.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I don’t know what they could improve. We’re happy with their service.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We needed help with mobile app development because we focus on other platforms. We also required Apple TV development. Since we are a product company, we have engaged Profico to help us define milestones and deliverables, and they design and build our Android and iOS native apps using Kotlin and Swift.

What is the team composition?

We found them through networking, and they seemed like good people. They’re based in Croatia, as we also are. They’re close, and it’s easier for us to work with them.

We found them through networking.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between $500,000–$1 million. It is a big project because we have US and Asian clients.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in January 2023, and the engagement is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We measure success based on timelines. Our internal QA team checks what they do, but the most important thing for us is that they respect the timelines. If we agree on a deadline, they ensure to meet it.

How did Profico perform from a project management standpoint?

We use internal tools such as Jira and Helpdesk to track bugs and issues and communicate through Google Meet, sometimes Skype, and mobile calls.
