We wanted to create an app to remind people what food they have in their refrigerator, how long it has been there, and how long before it expires. We needed a partner that could develop an app with these capabilities from scratch.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We provided Pairroxz with a set of designs for the app. We collaborated to determine specifics for how the platform was going to flow and which devices we wanted to focus on, then planned the scope. The team designed the user interface for the platform and developed the native frontend and backend for both iOS and Android devices.

The system’s main feature is its intuitive machine learning capabilities. When a user inputs their experience regarding the lifespan of a specific food item, the system will archive that data and update its internal database. Based on those metrics, Pairroxz programmed the app to determine a general average lifespan for each food product and also update each specific users’ profile with their unique experience. This allows the system to adjust according to variables in users’ habits, such as the temperature at which they store food.

After the development process, we entered a preliminary beta testing phase. Step-by-step, we went through the app from two different perspectives, us as users and the Pairroxz team as developers. We thoroughly documented any issues or possible improvements in the app’s design and overall experience. Pairroxz made the changes and, from there, it was a back-and-forth process until the product was absolutely perfect.

Now, we’re using the system as a demonstration while we work to create a second version of the app using cross-platform development tools. This new platform will be able to support a larger user base and have additional integration capabilities that will allow users to interact with the app in their food shopping, ordering, and delivering processes.

The total team size was probably around ten people. We worked with two main representatives, an iOS development team, and an Android development team.

With great communication skills, Pairroxz developed a comprehensive and exact understanding of what we wanted. Once we finalized the design, it was a very smooth process. The team is very responsive and keeps us up to date on our progress. We communicate via email, phone calls, and Skype depending on who is meeting and the level of confidentiality. They are pretty much a self-managed team, we just give the requirements and let them go to work.

This was my first experience building an app, so heading into the development process, we didn’t know the appropriate time period to expect a completed task. Since then, we developed a better understanding of the processes involved in creating an app. It has been a learning curve for both of us. We were planning to build the app with React, Redux, ES6, and introduce a JSON optimizing structure, so we needed a team that was proficient with these technologies. The system required cross-platform React Native and a JavaScript backend. They also made sure the app would be easy to rebuild and rebrand for use at different public events and venues. Among its many features are multiple modules that can be linked in many different combinations on the fly, offline access and online update capability, a dynamically changeable flow, and various other tools including a ruler, compass, and pedometer.

The quality of their work was always at par, even while we sorted out minor details. The core project was finished on time and we launched the app successfully. We did add a little more time but that was due introducing extra detailing, a small feature, and new designs.

The workflow was very effective and we communicated well on daily basis. They have excellent communication skills and high availability in European time zones. I used real time chats, for the most team, and they would respond within an hour or two. Our project manager handles everything efficiently thanks to Skype. He’s an outstanding person who understands my point of view easily and gets things done fast.

Whenever we need a quick turnaround, Pairroxz is able to do it. They give me daily updates and we always discuss any issues over skype. They communicate what’s being done and what the app looks like from their perspective, which makes me more comfortable with the investment I’ve made with them. Although we have yet to officially launch, we are currently conducting an open beta with about 120 users. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with several users noting the high quality of the app and the smoothness of each interaction.

Pairroxz has exceeded our expectations with the quality of this project. This tends to be a concern when outsourcing development, but the team has delivered excellent work and outperformed from a quality standpoint.

The partners also provide us with frequent status updates, as well as clear timetables for deliverables. We began with the intention of building a simple prototype to test the look and feel of our idea. But, as Pairroxz worked through the app, they delivered and outperformed on every challenge we gave them. Now, what started off as just a prototype has become the full application we envisioned.
