OneByte provides us with development staff augmentation.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The team has helped us build several applications over several years. We work on a project to project basis, where they can offer support with MEAN stack, iOS, and Android development.

However, we also have an ongoing staff augmentation engagement, wherein we work side by side with their developers to service specific client projects. We’ll run sprints together on a biweekly basis, and OneByte is involved in daily scrums as well as the planning and review meetings. For these projects, the engineers work within our system, so we can onboard them for whatever client system they’re supporting. 

What is the team composition?

We have different teams and points of contact for different projects. On smaller projects, we’ll work with between three and four people, but on larger projects, we can work with up to 30.

I know the owner of OneByte personally, so I reached out to him for advice when I recognized a need for a vendor. Eventually, we went from the consultation approach to a trial period and found the team had the specific expertise we were looking for.

The engagement began in June 2013 and is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

One project OneByte supported us with was the construction of a streaming application. One of the requirements the client set forth was that the platform have the ability to handle 1,000,000 concurrent users. The client was extremely happy with the result, and we were impressed by their performance internally.

OneByte has allowed us to build an integrated team, which has resulted in an increase in the quality of our work. The staff augmentation approach allows us to keep track of progress on a daily basis. 

Further, OneByte has spent a significant amount of time developing relationships with talented contractors and engineers within their region, so if we ever need to scale up in a project, we’re confident that we’ll have the best resources. That’s been a valuable service.

How did OneByte perform from a project management standpoint?

We use several project management tools. We lean towards Jira for project tracking and Slack for communication, which allows us to integrate the team into different client projects. We always set the criteria of communication for particular projects, which is a freedom we’ve really enjoyed.

What did you find most impressive about them?

OneByte won’t accept a project until they understand the project and scope entirely. Then, they take the time to come up with an accurate projection of the timeline, budget, and delivery. They’ve said no to more projects than not, which speaks to their integrity and transparency.

Whenever the engineers come across something they haven’t done before, they take a fantastic approach to research and development to learn the necessary skill set. At times, they’ve even worked to earn certifications in certain areas so they can deliver the end product in a manner we can be proud of. It’s been really impressive.

Are there any areas they could improve?

One area we’ve worked on consistently is improving our communication channels through different scenarios. We’ve had to regularly address what works best in differing areas, like what works best in a sprint versus the project as a whole. OneByte has definitely improved over time and will continue to do so, but it’s their best opportunity for growth.

Take the time to follow the project that OneByte suggests before engaging in the project. Their model works for them and it’s worked for us, so follow their lead. The project will run smoothly because you’ll know what to expect and when.

We do these sites not only for our own business, but also for our clients. The quality of work and timeliness of work that OneByte does directly impacts our business, and so far, its been very good! We've done at least 3 or 4 projects with them now, so that alone should speak for itself.

PM is very effective at OneByte. They streamline communication into one main point of contact which is really helpful.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Although we sit on different sides of the globe, we still have plenty of time to connect. Language is not a barrier. They are timely in responses and attentive to our needs. They work quickly and efficiently.

None that come to mind - these guys are a great option for effective offshore help.

OneByte developed a web application and a mobile solution for both iOS and Android. Users can post questions anonymously and get answers from legal experts. The team includes a project manager, a UI/UX designer, an iOS developer, an Android developer, and a QA specialist. They provide development resources for both backend and frontend.

Both the iOS and Android version have more than 10,000 installs. The web app generates significant traffic as well. To date, experts have answered 2,500 legal queries, and that number is growing steadily. The app is easy to use and is a great single-stop for legal advice in Pakistan.

We have a professional work environment between both teams. After our initial meetings, OneByte guided development through the product lifecycle and kept us in the loop. Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

After the app rolled out, we received great feedback from the parents in terms of how valuable they found the app because they could receive constant updates on what happens in school.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

The project manager was helpful and on top of his work. We constantly communicated through emails, Invision, and in person weekly meetings. They were accommodating and addressed concerns and questions in addition to implementing revised scopes in quickly.

I work as the creative director at CFx Comics. We're a full-service creative agency that specializes in development-communication messaging. We hired OneByte to create a comprehensive mobile app that enabled CFx Comics to create a digital platform for Pakistani comics–ours and a third party's, as the first of its kind in the country.

We wanted to showcase our content with ambient music, allow our users to browse through a catalog of the comics through an online store, and allow them to download content based on their interests. We wanted users to be able to interact with the comics, panel by panel. We also required a smart list to easily navigate the library and a sharing feature.

We went through a series of interviews with multiple potential developers. We shortlisted OneByte because of their good references and their strong pitch.

OneByte developed the front- and backend of our app. Their team fashioned a publishing feature on the app to enable artists to upload their content digitally. The challenge was to make the content available in a way that could be packaged as entertainment, not just for reading but with a whole curated experience; Thus, their developers worked with us to integrate background music and animations. They configured the UX/UI to be immersive and cinematic to set a riveting experience for readers.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The helped bring a digital version of traditional comics into the spotlight and was successful as a broad platform for comic creators and readers. It brought together many artists and creators together on one platform for easy content generation and publication. Besides the launch of three of our own comic series, we were able to onboard five third-party comic book creators for the app. The app has more than 20,000 users and garnered more than 100,000 downloads of our content. It helped us gain over 66,000 fans on our Facebook page.

Matrix Analytics has a flagship product called Lung Direct, which is used by hospitals for managing pulmonary nodules in lung cancer patients.

What challenge were you trying to address with OneByte?

I approached them three years ago when I was trying to create an app for my office. I am a physician and wanted to create a tool which would help me be more efficient in my practice, managing a particular cohort of patients.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

OneByte created an app which turned out better than anything I’d seen available. We’ve continued the relationship since then. The first products were calculator apps for iOS and Android. OneByte embedded algorithms into an easy-to-use app in which users can input different data variables and receive a probability of malignancy tied to a recommendation. It’s an arduous process for a physician to do, which the apps automate and simplify.

We proceeded to go to a bigger project, a web-based application called Lung Direct. It entails connecting into multiple systems within the hospital IT infrastructure, creating HL7 [Health Level Seven] and FHIR [Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources] interfaces, as well as data mapping and parsing on our side. It allows users to interact with the software, creating a registry connected to the American College of Radiology. There are multiple bidirectional interfaces and data mapping which are both required for a complex claims process, and which also allows for flagging and reminders to the end-users (the hospital).

We have a continuous integration practice and push code daily. It’s peer-reviewed, merged into staging, and thoroughly tested during QA. OneByte is my team. They can take an idea which doesn’t have too much detail, and start a process for wireframing things, ensuring that what will be produced is actually what the customer wants.

How did you come to work with OneByte?

I interviewed a ton of developers and found that OneByte understood the language, in terms of clinical applications, better than any other group. I could tell the other developers what I wanted, but they would work in a vacuum for long periods, so the end-product didn’t end up being what I wanted. The end-deliverables from OneByte were better than anyone else’s.

How much have you invested with them?

Over the past three years, the cost has been anywhere between $200,000 and $300,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

I started working with OneByte in 2014. They continue to develop new products for us, maintain our DevOps, and help with tech support. I plan to continue the collaboration for as long as OneByte will work with me

The UI/UX of Lung Direct is best-in-class and has given us a competitive advantage in terms of market penetration. It’s a complex platform that OneByte made intuitive for the end-user, with an elegant interface.

They’ve provided a product which we’ve been able to sell successfully, closing some big deals. In terms of the part played by OneByte into the success of our company, it was huge. We rely on them for not only the development of the product but also for customer success and technical success. OneByte is not a contractor to me; they’re a part of the company. They’re the reason we’re the leader in the market.

Everything is entered in JIRA, and we have an organized backlog and sprints. Tasks are triaged, and we know where we stand at any moment. Anytime we have a check-in, I know exactly what’s going on, and who is doing what.

Our corporate clients have enjoyed the application. It has enabled them to keep in touch with the airline through updates.

Through the application developed by OneByte, we won first prize in a competition between 167 other offices of Turkish Airlines from all over the world.

OneByte's team worked well and very fast. The work was completed before the deadline, and the app was handed over to us in a fully-functional state. OneByte was very good in terms of deploying the stack, and cooperated with us through a number of changes which we requested at the last minute.

OneByte worked very well for us, and we've recommended them to many contacts as a result.

Are there any areas OneByte could improve?

No. Since we didn't have any ideas on how to approach the project, OneByte gave us many ideas on how to implement it. The collaboration was good overall.

What was the scope of their involvement?

I worked with one manager from OneByte in order to develop the scope of the project. He passed the work to the developer who created our website. We had no clue on where to start or what to do, but OneByte came to us with several different ideas, palettes, and designs, which became the basis of what we used to build our page.

The work done by OneByte has definitely touched people from a marketing standpoint, but I don't have specific feedback. The scope of our project was small.

We first met with OneByte on a Skype call, which kind of took me by surprise, given that I hadn't used the software in a long time. It wasn't a drawback, but simply unusual for me.
