We needed help with mobile app and website development, UX/UI design, and marketing.

Naked Development was supposed to help us complete our app's design and creation. 

What is the team composition?

We initially worked with Kyle, who ended up quitting. We were then transferred to a junior engineer. Our team also interfaced with their secretary, a marketing person, and Jason.

How did you come to work with Naked Development?

We hosted a golf tournament, and John and my father were in the same foursome. They discussed their businesses, and my father told him we always wanted to do an app. John said he had a business for that and met with us for lunch. We thought we could trust him, but we also looked into their work. They had good reviews and a professional website, plus John seemed like a good person. As a result, we hired them. 

How much have you invested with them?

We invested around $200,000–$250,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

The engagement lasted from February 2021–January 2024.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

They delivered a basic brand book and a basic landing page. The app they delivered was about 50% done on the consumer and specialist sides. In other words, they didn’t provide all the deliverables, so we hired a new development company to work on the project. 

How did Naked Development perform from a project management standpoint?

We had biweekly meetings with them. We traveled a lot for work, so we always met on Zoom and in the car with them. We didn’t hear back from them for over six months. We paid everything in full every month but didn’t have a finished product. 

Given that, we reached out to John over Zoom. He said the software was outdated, would cost more, and he would need help. After months, we had an attorney go after them. John’s attorney stated they sent us the delivered product. However, we didn’t have a finished consumer or specialist app.

We always dealt with their secretary, who was responsible for scheduling and rescheduling meetings. She was the gatekeeper to all that information. When we weren’t able to connect with them, she kept us back and didn’t let us contact Jason or John. We also used emails, texts, and Monday.com. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

They were good during the first year. The team was welcoming and had us in meetings at their office. In fact, they were friendly and cordial at that time. However, when things started getting bad in January 2024, they became less communicative and responsive.

Are there any areas they could improve?

After they became distant and uncommunicative, I reached out to see what was going on. However, they completely shrugged us off and said we were paid in full and had a final product. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Naked Development seems like they’re going to be great, but they assign their work to freelance engineers and product designers. They seem great, but when you get to work with them, they don’t deliver the project. If things get rough, they’ll stop communicating with you.

I recommend looking elsewhere before you get involved. They’re expensive and don’t deliver the finalized project. They sell themselves high but under-deliver.

Our team fully developed and delivered the first version of the app under a fixed-cost contract, moving it into the Alpha testing phase. At this stage, client participation is essential—without the necessary test users, further progress was not possible.

Over the course of nearly a year of inactivity on your end, we made multiple attempts to reconnect and advised that prolonged delays could result in technical challenges. Despite our outreach, the project remained stalled, and when revisited, it required significant updates to restore functionality—something that naturally occurs when a custom-built platform remains unmaintained for that long.

Our typical approach includes ongoing support at a lower monthly cost to prevent these issues, but resuming a stalled project after such an extended delay required work well beyond the original fixed-cost agreement. We understand this was a frustrating situation, and while we sincerely wish the outcome had been different, we remain committed to delivering high-quality work and ensuring clear expectations in all of our partnerships.

To further protect our clients and projects, we've since refined our Master Services Agreement (MSA) to clearly outline the risks of prolonged inactivity and ensure a smoother process if ever projects need to be paused then restarted.

We were looking for developers to build our software.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Naked Development designed and developed our custom mobile software from scratch. They also created the paperwork, the blueprint, and everything behind the app. Moreover, we leveraged AWS, and the team was supposed to do maintenance for us, too.

What is the team composition?

We mainly worked with John, alongside his business partner. In total, 4–5 teammates were involved in the project. 

How did you come to work with Naked Development?

We went to Google and searched for the best teams around. Naked Development had excellent reviews, so we chose them.

How much have you invested with them?

Our investment was between $120,000–$150,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The engagement lasted from October 2018–January 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The blueprint that Naked Development created for us was extensive and well-written. Overall, everything with the company was good design-wise.

Although they couldn’t complete the connection we needed to make the software work, it was a great-looking app that was properly built. However, they couldn’t cross the finish line to complete it.

How did Naked Development perform from a project management standpoint?

They used Asana. Overall, they were professional in terms of project management. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their customer service was good, and the design work was modern. Naked Development understood what we wanted. The build-up was also good. They understood every step we needed when it came to the build. Even the blueprint itself was well-constructed, and their resources were nice and hospitable. They were pleasant to speak with, so it was unfortunate the engagement didn’t work in the end.

Are there any areas they could improve?

John was pushy about payment. He would call us nonstop and pressure us into paying him large amounts. We wanted to accomplish our goals, so we did what he asked. In the end, he owed us $10,000 in development because we had already paid him for services that weren’t completed. We decided to go through with another developer since their team couldn’t complete the project. 

We then asked John for the money back, but things took a turn. He said he wouldn’t give it back. We could see him in court, but we were a small company and already spent most of our money on the project. We didn’t want to pay lawyer fees to recover a certain amount and lose much more money in the process.

Given that, Naked Development should be more understanding of us starting off the ground, our fears, and our unfamiliarity with the software world — we didn’t know what we were doing. They promised us the world and said they would finish the app within three months. They said it was an easy no-hitter, so we told investors we’d get the app done in three months. That wasn’t the case, and it took over a year. We felt like we had lost over $100,000 and had nothing.

Overall, Naked Development should give realistic expectations and work on their pricing, which would’ve been great if the project had been completed. Moreover, they should be understanding of people’s budgets and be reasonable when it comes to limitations. Their management needs to be more cooperative with their clients.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Get everything on paper. Have a lawyer look over the documents and the master service agreement. Make sure that the promises are held up. There should be some type of refund so if the product can’t be built, you should receive some money back. That’s something to look out for — open promises that never get filled. Ensure you understand where your money is going and the work is deliverable.

 • Landing Page: A fully designed and optimized landing page was delivered, serving as a critical user acquisition tool.

The deliverables for this project included and initial strategy meeting, wireframes, initial design concepts, an admin tool for for content management, a mobile app, and a web version of the mobile app for users to access content on their computer.

There were no successuful outcomes from this project. It was a complete disaster for the entirety of our working relationship.

They use Monday.com as a project management tool, and we scheduled weekly Zoom calls to discuss what was being worked on each week. Every week, new issues would come up, along with more excuses as to why things were not getting done on time. My account opted to not attend several of these meetings, and would frequenlty be "out of the office" or on vacation. Emails to the company would not be immedately responded to, and I would often have to wait a day or two to get a response. 
I signed a contract in May of 2023 with Naked and was told my project would be finished in September or October of that same year. As of this writing, my Android app is still not live in the Google Play Store, and I'm experience several, frequent issues with the iOS app where users can't login. It took them 15 months to get the iOS app launched and into the app store. The admin tool they built is also not complete. I've had to hire outside developers to help me complete this project because of Naked inability to complete anything.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Iniitally, I bought into what the CEO told me. He's a good salesperson and did a good job selling me on their company and its expertise in the mobile app space. However, as we got further into my project it became clear that he did not care about the stresses he put me and my business through, or that his company was not going to deliver on anything they promosed. 

Are there any areas for improvement or something Naked Development could have done differently?

There are several areas for improvement:

1. Deliver on what you promise. If you tell a client a project will be done by a certain time, make it happen. The CEO told me to "not ever beleive a deadline that a developeer give you." The laughable part of this was that he was the one who gave me the initial deadline, which I based all of my marketing efforts around - losing significant amounts of money as a result.
2. If you fire all of the developers working on a client's project midway through the project, have a plan in place so your client's app continues to be built with no delays. Naked fired all of the developers working on my project and there were months where nothing was getting done.
3. Offer concenssions - If you can't deliver on anything you promose and make a habit of lying to your clients, all while costing them a significant amount of time and money, at least offer some type of refund. I asked for a reasonable amount to be refunded to me,, after they were almost a year past their deadline, and I was told no. The CEO was not wiling to make any concessions whatsoever and it was clear that he did not care whatsoever about the outcome of my business or project.

Jason, we appreciate your candid feedback and sincerely regret that your experience did not meet your expectations. Developing a mobile app is a complex process, and while we worked diligently to deliver your project, we understand that the timeline and outcome were frustrating for you.

Throughout our engagement, we maintained open communication via weekly meetings, emails, phone calls, texts, and project updates. While we recognize that delays occurred, app development timelines can be affected by various factors, including evolving requirements and technical complexities, such as mid-development API updates or deprecations. We always strive to mitigate these challenges, but certain factors, such as resource transitions, can contribute to extended timelines.

We delivered the contracted scope, including the mobile app, admin tool, and web version. That said, we acknowledge that certain elements required additional refinements post-launch. While we worked to address these challenges together over many months, we regret that we were unable to reach a resolution that fully met your expectations.

That said, we stand by the work delivered despite the unforeseen challenges encountered, while also recognizing our areas for improvement. To further enhance timeline management and communication, we have implemented new process improvements under the leadership of our recently appointed CTO. We do appreciate, as always, your candid feedback and wish you the best with your app and business moving forward.

I’m the founder of a mobile dating app company. 

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Naked.?

We originally hired Naked. to take over our UI/UX design efforts for the aesthetic of our app. From there, we expanded our relationship; they produced our commercial. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Our team had original mock-ups and prototypes, but we gave Naked. an idea of what else we wanted. They worked on our app’s logo and branding — we went through an editing process where they gave us design options. Everything was done on Figma. They didn’t do any development work since my other company handled that.

Moreover, Naked. has produced a video commercial for us, which we haven’t sent anywhere yet. However, it will go to all of our social accounts and paid ads for platforms like Hulu, YouTube, Google, Instagram, and TikTok. The video is a 45-second commercial that we’ve segmented into short 15-second clips. At present, Naked. is set to do another video commercial for us. 

What is the team composition? 

We work with seven people from the Naked. team, including Jason (Co-Founder). He handles the UI/UX design tasks and offers inside knowledge of the app space. Meanwhile, Robby (Executive Director) has worked on our video commercial. 

How did you come to work with Naked.?

I found Naked. through Clutch by searching online for tech firms. We wanted a team in Orange County so that we could drive and sit down with them — we were not fans of the virtual world at the time. We interviewed 5–6 vendors, and Naked. seemed to have the best match with what we were trying to do. 

How much have you invested with them?

Our investment has been around $114,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in October 2021, and the engagement is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The UI/UX aesthetic is pretty, and everyone loves it. In fact, the brand logo design is worth the money alone — it’s so good that everything else has been a bonus for us. It’s clean, simple, and exactly what we want. One of my success markers is when people think the app is so simple that they can’t tell how complex it truly is. Similarly, we’ve gotten great feedback for the commercial. 

How did Naked. perform from a project management standpoint?

Naked.’s project management is quite good. We’ve gone over budget for the commercial, but that’s been pre-approved by my boss. Our teams have developed the design and video in parallel, and things have gone as fast as they can go, so I have no complaints. 

To manage the project, we use Monday and Google Documents. We’ve done everything in person. Though some people have joined us virtually, we’ve insisted on going into the office. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Jason and his UX design skills are impressive. He runs their development team and has a good understanding of what good UX is, what works, and what doesn’t. On top of that, Naked. has great designers — some of them have even helped me with a couple of other projects. Overall, their UI/UX team has been the most valuable part of the engagement. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

In terms of the commercial video, we’ve been somewhat surprised by the licensing-related matters that we didn’t know about. There have been some areas where it would have been nice to know a lot more information upfront instead of during the process. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Start small. Naked. offers grandiose packages — we’ve started with that and added what we needed. We also used a generic package, but it wasn’t worth the same value as the one where we specified our needs.
