The project management was exemplary. The team was extremely communicative, both as to reporting the progress, as well as to requesting the input from us as the need arose. Monterail made significant efforts to understand our work processes and how these should be reflected in the IT tool. The provider proactively identified issues that needed to be addressed during the project. When unforeseen issues arose during development, they demonstrated great flexibility and proactivity in finding solutions that worked for both parties. All tasks were delivered on time

What stood out most about Monterail was their visionary approach to business and their dedication to ensuring the project was a success for our firm. Very senior mambers of leadership and management of Monterail have been directly involved in keeping oversight of the team on the project and are always contactable, accessible and responsive. Was impressed by the regular relationship meetings. During the project, I had some challenges associated with a change in the Project Manager on the team, but Monterail very quickly responds to concerns raised by the client and quickly implements actions to resolve them.

The project manager is always responsive, with regular feedback meetings and check-ins and it felt like he was always "on my side" and personally invested in the project.

Our website was created in 2018 when the startup was funded and when the business was not well defined yet. The company has evolved since, and the homepage was out of date. We have been collaborating with Monterail since the beginning, and one of the projects they were involved to was indeed the new homepage of our website in order for it to reflect our current business.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We asked Monterail to assist as they have been with us from the beginning and they knew our business and its principles. They are in fact out IT support.

We kicked off by defining our goals and priorities. We wanted the new homepage to reflect our current principles and work. We had a kick off session where we briefed Monterail and we discussed about the different aspects of the projects. We had several meeting with the designer where she walked us through each session: she was suggesting ideas and we were providing for feedbacks each time to be adjusted. During the implementation they also updated Rails to the last version.

How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

We worked with 4 people: the project manager, a web designer, a frontend developer and a junior frontend developer which was assigned at no costs.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The developers were able to implement the new homepage easily and in a very usel-friendly manner. We received good suggestions from a design point of view. The homepage reflects well what we do and make it clear to our clients. As it as just been implemented we could not get much metrics, but we received positive feedback from people from our team.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Most of the communication was handled through Slack. The project manager kept us uptodate all the team and we also had access to their project management tool on Jira which allowed us to monitor the progress of the project at any time. We had biweekly calls to discuss the tasks and any issue, but the Monterail team was also available for any urgent call we had to do. The deadline was not always met, but they kept us uptodate about potential delays.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We appreciated their patience in dealing with us, especially when we were late to provide the content to be implemented. They really value their relationship with the client and they also provided us with an additional junior developer at no cost as a sign of goodwill. The project manager has been very good with keeping us uptodate all the time and to manage our expectations.

Things could have been done faster, but we are satisfied with the result and the collaboration.

We have launched various features. Code was deployed to production on a regular basis.

I’m the CTO of an online gambling company.

What challenge were you trying to address with Monterail?

We wanted to rewrite the frontend framework of our website, and we needed more resources to do so. However, recruiting talented resources to augment our internal team quickly was getting harder, especially in the local market, so we decided to partner with an external development agency. Our ultimate goal was to ensure our website was much more maintainable and easy to update so that we could innovate it continuously and add more features to it in the future.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Monterail has provided us with frontend development services, augmenting our internal development team so that we can make updates in a much more agile and faster way. Initially, I was very clear about my needs, so I told them the specific skills I was looking for. From there, we created a ramp-up plan for onboarding a lean team from Monterail.

Since then, Monterail resources have helped us launch version one of our site’s frontend, which they developed on Angular. However, we reached a point where we wouldn’t be able to push more features in a clean and sustainable way, so they helped us explore other options by creating different proofs of concepts (POCs). One of those POCs was for using React.js, so that’s the route we’ve decided to take.

We’re still working very closely with Monterail. Now, we will rewrite our site’s current version in a React.js framework, and they’ll also help us develop a custom CMS. Our site currently depends on third parties for some features, but we will try to avoid dependencies with this new redevelopment project. Additionally, we’ve tasked them to make the new frontend more SEO-ready and SEO-friendly.

What is the team composition?

Currently, we’re working with six people from Monterail, including a technical lead. Although we started with a very lean team, more resources have been incorporated as needed.

How did you come to work with Monterail?

We searched for agencies that could provide us with resources with specific skill sets, one of those being React.js, and we found Monterail.  We ultimately chose them because they were also knowledgeable in Vue.js, and they positioned themselves as market leaders in that space. Moreover, they were very flexible to our needs, allowing us to be more fluid in our requirements because we knew they were very open to suggestions without losing focus on their work.

How much have you invested in them?

We’ve spent close to €350,000 (approximtely $343,000 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together in July 2022, and our partnership is ongoing. The project has an end date, but we’re currently assessing whether we can retain them for a much longer period because we have maintenance and updates to make ongoingly. Thus, we expect continuous collaboration moving forward.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Since we didn’t want to recruit internally, Monterail has been an important asset. They’ve provided us with proficient and talented developers, and they've accommodated our needs. Their resources work closely with our internal teammates, allowing us to share knowledge between both entities. Moreover, their onboarding process was very smooth.

Given that the site isn’t live yet, we don’t have any measurable outcomes. However, we’ve evaluated how they deliver on milestones and the speed at which they work, and we’re satisfied so far.

How did Monterail perform from a project management standpoint?

I’m in charge of managing the project, so my responsibility is to ensure that Monterail’s resources are doing the right tasks. We have daily sync-up meetings to see if they have any challenges or issues with the project, and we also have planning sessions. Additionally, we use Slack for communication and Jira for project and task management.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Monterail is very honest, and they’re very responsive to my demands. I initially wanted them to start working immediately, and they found a way to do it as fast as they could. Overall, working with them has been a very nice experience.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It would be great if Monterail gave clients more visibility into their resources’ career progression. Sometimes, it isn’t clear who’s responsible for their resources’ mentorship, so it would be beneficial for us to see their training in a more proactive way to avoid assumptions.

Come prepared and know what you want to build. Additionally, split the project into milestones and ensure to test each milestone on your end actively.
