BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

I'm a lawyer and owner of legal company in Odesa, Ukraine. First we decided to develop a product for our own use. That's when we've started to work with Alexey and MetaProject. The product was ERP system, mobile app, that helps manage law practice. Most interesting feature was integration with government's API that allows you to receive updates on hearing dates, solutions, etc. in the most convenient way.

Later we've decided to continue development and release public version for Ukrainian lawyers. It was successful, without big marketing efforts, we've had somewhere around 12k users on all platforms, while in Ukraine there're around 60k lawyers. Means, around 10% of all lawyers in our country tried our product.

Based on that background, we've founded separate LLC called 'Legal Tech', found investor and with MetaProject developed web-version of the service and now preparing expansion on the markets of Canada and other Europe countries.

My role is CEO of the startup. We don't have developers on board, only marketing and client-relationship. And MetaProject is our development vendor.

For what projects/services did your company hire MetaProject, and what were your goals?

The challenge was to design and develop mobile apps for both iOS and Android, and later web-version for our ERP startup. MetaProject covers every aspect of development and project support.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

I can think of a few factors that made us to chose MetaProject:

• They are a local company in the same city as we are;
• They are known for non-standard solutions. Many companies could deliver landing pages or WordPress eCommerce, but our project required a way more complex approach;
• High level of involvement. They listen, sometimes argue, and suggest better options based on their experience. And seems like really cares about the product.

First, we came up with our version of Tech Specs and had a few meetings to decide how we will work and clarify things. Then they worked on design mockups for some time and some of the backend. Once the first bunch of mockups were approved, they started to work on mobile apps. MVP version for our use was ready in around 6 months.

Then we decided to add more functions and also to polish bugs. That took us around another 3 months to implement. Later we started to work with the app ourselves and made a little pause in development. Once we realized the potential of the project, we decided to add more functionality for commercial use, like payment gateways, subscription logic, etc.

Almost simultaneously we've started to work on the web version. And later - on the global international version. I can't remember the exact sequencing of functions. But I guess that first, it was about cases and date of hearing, integration with government APIs - that's core functionality. Authorization and user management with the permission/restriction system and complex company hierarchy setups - was the other hard part of the project.

Then the task management for cases, chat inside the tasks, push-notification with various scenarios and deep links. Later - payment gateway for apple and google (first), then for wayforpay and stripe. And web version. I've asked, technology is Swift for iOS, RxJava for Android, backend on PHP Laravel.

I interacted with project manager and later I wanted to be more involved with all the team and started to communicate with everyone on weekly basis.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

As mentioned previously, we had a successful launch. Our marketing effort was minimal, around 1k on facebook ads, and we gained around 5k users on the first day. Overall we have around 12k users which are 10% of all lawyers in Ukraine (our main and only target audience).

We mostly communicated over Telegram app. At first phase we had 2 weeks sprints meetings. Sometime in person, sometime via calls. Later we agreed to switch to 1 week meetings instead, because I wanted to be more involved. I had access to their management tool - ClickUp. Deadlines for sprints not always were met, and not always I was warned about it, but I don't consider it as a big problem, since I'm happy with the final result and we performed a lot of changes and additions on the go.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Involvement, expertise and patience. Really liked their design. And overall approach of creating non-standard solution. I've heard 'it's impossible to implement' from other companies, but in the end MetaProject made it.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

I wasn't too happy with QA work on first stage. Even when MVP was done there were plenty of bugs left to fix. They all were fixed in the end, but I guess they miscalculated that time they need for polishing result.
