I’m the manager of STL Beds, a specialty sleep retailer. We serve the needs of people that are looking for better support, more durable mattresses, and mattresses and accessories that you can’t find your cookie-cutter mattress stores or furniture stores.

What challenge were you trying to address with Matchbox Design Group?

We had a former company we were working with, and things didn’t go well. To our surprise, we were released by this company, and we were scrambling to find a replacement.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

I had already hired Matchbox Design Group to do an audit of the company we were working with at that time. They were going to do a 30-day audit for us. We explained what was going on by that company, but we didn’t really understand the scope of what was going on, so we hired an outside firm to do it, which was Matchbox. We were due to start that at the end of July, and they were going to do 30 days and then report back to us, and then we would decide whether we were going to stay with our current company or move on. When we were let go, it forced our hand, and we went ahead with the audit, and we ended up hiring them ultimately to take over the STL Beds E-Commerce site.

After the audit, they sat down with us and basically told us what was going on. The website was a legacy website, and a lot of things were very dated, and it was a rat’s nest essentially. It was like a hoarder, where they had a house, and every room in the house was full, and now it was moving day. The website had so much information. There were a lot of legacy issues there, and we were trying to deal with those legacy issues.

What we determined was rather than trying to work through the current website, which needed so much modernization, so we ended up hiring them to do the entire project.

They did both the frontend and the backend. We did everything from organizational issues, showing the product better to our customers because the old website was confusing because there was a lot going on. They were able to really narrow it down and present the product to my customer in a cleaner and more organized fashion.

They did the design for the website in addition to the organization of the product itself as well as information as it was being fed to the customer. You can overload the customer with just so much information. It is a very complex website with a lot of important information in how you get that to the customer in a simple way and I think they have done a good job with that so far.

What is the team composition?

Their whole team is available to me, which differed from the previous company. With Matchbox Design Group, they have close to 15 employees and each one of them is very good in their respective departments. I had someone that could do coding, and someone to do graphics and another person to do the content. They had a team that does SEO and a team that does PPC.

How did you come to work with Matchbox Design Group?

I did a lot of searching online and researched them. I had it narrowed down to three companies that I was going to have them do the audit for me. They were the most personable and explained it in clear terms I could understand.

At the same time, they could geek out on you a little bit but they do their part and I do my part. It all seems to work.

What is the status of this engagement?

It was July of 2019, and we just wrapped up about a month ago.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The site just launched, so in terms of recouping investment, the jury is still out on that, and we will have to see. It was an intense project. It took time, but basically, we now have a very nimble and fast site. It is thorough, and it can be built on, and we can expand on it. We structured the site in a way that we could continue to make it better.

In terms of navigation, clarity, pictures, speed, serviceability, and the site not going down, in addition to the nagging problems that I consistently had previously, and promptness, they are getting it done.

A couple of weeks ago, our server was getting pinged, and it was almost to the point it was about to crash. We were getting such an overload, which we had not seen in an amazing amount of time. There were many bots, and we found out the country of origin before it happened, and we were able to keep them from crashing the website. With my old company, that wasn’t the case. We were always reacting.

The website could go down, and we could be down for a couple of minutes or hours, and we had to put in a ticket to restore the website the way it was before, and that always took time. Matchbox Design Group has another version of the website, which is a staging site where they can work on and test it before we go live with that change or that problem. They could do all the work on the staging site, and it is incorporated into the cost, but I think it has been a fantastic value.

They were able to project that information to me in an understandable way, so my business wasn’t interrupted.

How did Matchbox Design Group perform from a project management standpoint?

They have been fantastic. For everything you do, they have a project manager. That project manager relays that information to the team member that would be in charge of that particular project. We have a good communications system that we communicate through, which forwards the information back and forth in real-time. It also gives us historical information.

In terms of communication, they have a really good communication system for all the projects and it can be delegated to multiple team members or just one, and we have a system that we communicate through and we know when these projects are completed and who is responsible for those projects. Even if there is a problem, it is done in the very same manner. You can put in a ticket for something to be changed, repaired, or anything like that. On the site, that was always a nuisance. If we were to ever have problems with the future site, I know I can count on them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their professionalism and their ability to communicate and to ask the right questions and look for answers that match what it is we are trying to do. It is always about making sure it is our vision coming to life, and then if there is something that doesn’t work well with what it is they do, they are able to say there might be a better way to do that and give suggestions.

Communication was always good, and the detail and thoroughness are really unlike anything that I have dealt with even in other aspects of the business.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Not off the top of my head. Communication is always open with them. What I’ve learned about the fees in this industry is that cheap doesn’t always get you what you need.

If you want good service, sometimes you have to pay for that. I do think they fulfill that without any doubt at all.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I would interview other companies and I would interview Matchbox Design Group. Once you talk to other companies and then talk to these guys and gals, you will see they are a fantastic team of people. I think when you sit down with them, they know how to bring your vision to life.

If you don’t have a vision, they can help you create that vision. Sometimes people don’t know exactly what they want, or they know what they want but don’t know how to get it. Matchbox Design Group has the experience, the team, and the know-how to get that done. Everything up to this point that I have asked for, they have been able to do.

Our website was outdated and wasn’t mobile-friendly, so we began looking for support in rebuilding and redesigning it.

What was the scope of their involvement? 

Matchbox Design Group completely redesigned the website and collaborated with us to make the content more user-friendly. The team helped implement new graphics, colors, and design, and added a video-posting feature. 

They worked primarily off the information we shared with them early on about our goals and vision, and we collaborated on content and design throughout the project. 

When we shot the customer testimonial videos, Matchbox Design Group captured photographs of the event to post on the website as well.

The developers primarily used WordPress, and we have the ability to make edits and updates on our own.

What is the team composition?

We worked with a team of about four to five people.

I did a lot of research during the selection process and met with several companies. Matchbox Design Group had won a couple of local awards, so I reached out to them and ultimately felt they were the best fit for our project.

The new website generates a good deal of traffic and interest, and those leads often end up turning into new business for us. 

As a team, we’re extremely pleased with the design and we receive great feedback from our customers. It was crucial to us that the website made visitors feel welcomed, and Matchbox Design Group was able to achieve that.

I’m the director of digital communications at The Kelly Group and Show Me Victories. The Kelly Group does government affairs consulting, and Show Me Victories works for labor unions as well as political campaigns.

What challenge were you trying to address with Matchbox Design Group?

Our websites were outdated: The Kelly Group’s was about 15 years old, and Show Me Victories was approximately six years old. We needed to bring them up to date with a user-friendly experience for those searching for our type of business in the market.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They provided us with a full website transfer, a full style guide, and web design for both companies. Developing the sites from scratch, they worked flexibly with us to determine our specific end goals. It was important for this site to last many years, and they were able to achieve that. The site was created in WordPress, but the team developed its own features. Specifically, they created Vector Art for Show Me Victories, which is helpful for our marketing process.

We worked mainly with Colby (Project Manager & Photographer, Matchbox Design Group) but were in contact with about eight of their employees throughout the process.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We thought it was a pretty intimate process, which was helpful. Their personalities align with our team very well. The end product will be able to help us with anything we need moving forward and last us for a while. Overall, we’re already seeing great site traffic and new clients as a result of their work. 

How did Matchbox Design Group perform from a project management standpoint?

Colby’s a great project manager. We were able to stay on time with our external delivery dates but remained flexible with our internal timelines. Our teams communicated with Basecamp.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their process allows the customer a bit more control than I’ve seen with other providers. Additionally, the price point is more than fair for the product we got in the end.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It would’ve been helpful to have our project manager in our initial meeting with them. Other than that, it was a very good process.

I’m the VP and general secretary at MT Audio Group Inc, a vinyl records and high-end audio equipment retailer. We plan to branch out into other areas down the road, such as importing or distribution.

What challenge were you trying to address with Matchbox Design Group?

Our main challenge was to establish a robust web presence that would enable us to get into unique market niches. We wanted to build the e-commerce end of our business to expand our corporation beyond brick and mortar. My company had an outdated website that didn’t have the e-commerce components we wanted. We needed a website that would be easy for customers to use and enable us to manage our inventory and shipping.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Matchbox Design Group built a custom WordPress website and integrated it with WooCommerce.  They customized the site to all of the specifications and needs that we laid out during preliminary calls and meetings. When Matchbox Design Group did the design work, we showed them components of competitors’s sites that we liked and disliked.

Matchbox Design Group set up the site in such a way that allows my team to split the product groups between the vinyl LPs and audio hardware sides of our business. They also built a blog space, where we can upload blog posts and reviews. We can link product information to the blog, and vice versa.

We launched the beta version of the site, and then they had the site running a month later. They provide ongoing site maintenance.

We work with Colby (Project Coordinator and Photographer, Matchbox Design Group), Cullen (Co-Founder and Director of Development, Matchbox Design Group), and Brent (Co-Founder and Director of Design, Matchbox Design Group). They're our three main points of contact, but we’ve worked with everybody at Matchbox Design Group.

How did you come to work with Matchbox Design Group?

I have a background in the computing industry, so I laid out parameters for the website and its technologies.  My company researched local vendors and narrowed it down to 4–5 firms that we met with. We considered each firm’s depth of knowledge, how many sites they’d developed, and if they worked with similar businesses.

Matchbox Design Group wasn’t the most inexpensive or expensive option, but they offered the best value for money and proved their capabilities. During the selection process, we had a lot of face-to-face meetings with them.

How much have you invested with them?

The site design cost about $15,000. We also pay Matchbox Design Group a monthly fee for regular maintenance and updates.

What is the status of this engagement?

The site build spanned October 2018–February 2019, and our engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The website is visually different and bold, so it really grabs a viewer’s attention. From a usability standpoint, we can input a lot of product information. The site not only looks great but is also versatile; it gives us a lot of capabilities to do things like specials and featured products.

How did Matchbox Design Group perform from a project management standpoint?

Matchbox Design Group performs exceptionally well in this regard. During the site build, Colby got things done; if they had issues or got backed up, she always told us. She kept her team engaged and got them from point A to point B. Cullen always found a way to make stuff work. We communicated with them easily. They used Asana for support.

What did you find most impressive about them?

What impresses me the most is Matchbox Design Group’s capabilities and track record with other businesses. They’re always great to work with, fun to be around, and attentive to what we’re trying to accomplish. The quality of their work is amazing, and they’re one of the best teams of people I’ve worked with.

Matchbox Design Group’s team is young and vibrant, and they know what they’re doing. They take care of their customers exceptionally well. We always know we will be taken care of; even though they have lots of other customers, they treat us like we’re their most important customer. If they make a mistake, they take responsibility for their actions.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Sometimes, transitions can be a bit disorganized. They could be more proactive, but that’s pretty minuscule. I really haven’t had any issues.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Do it. Based on how they take care of customers, listen, and work, I wouldn’t hesitate to tell someone to hire them. Other companies may be cheaper, but Matchbox Design Group will give you the absolute best value for your money.

Matchbox Design Group has helped our business become more findable. I heard everyone was pleased with the website their team created. The site has no errors. With keywords, we’re becoming the first hit people see when they search. I’ve been told that users are also more likely to go directly to our product pages, which is great. All the reports are getting better and better.

Their project management style is pretty great. I use Basecamp, and the right team member picks up on who needs to do what. Sometimes we’re waiting on each other, but their team is definitely responsive.

I don't have any metrics to report yet, but overall Matchbox Design Group met or exceeded our expectations on all deliverables. They turned our ideas into a high-quality website while providing great input to help improve the final product.

We hired them to update our templates and complete an interactive map project.

What were your goals for this project?

We wanted to increase our ranking, traffic, and conversions while improving our UX. The map tool needed to provide an interactive asset that users could share widely for PR purposes. 

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We had a prior relationship. During introductory meetings, we were impressed by their knowledge and ability to speak intelligently about coding, content, and SEO. We also looked at their online reviews, website, and portfolio.

They restructured our pages, content, design elements, and links. They retooled our map tool to be mobile and user-friendly, then integrated a CMS component for easy internal updates. They also handled development work, wrote content, and consulted on the design, UX, and SEO.

We had a project manager, multiple developers, an SEO and content strategist, a copywriter, and a graphic designer.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

We're still gathering data for the template updates, but the map asset was shared and used by many people. The map page had many impressions and became integral to the success of the campaign.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

We used Basecamp, which was completely user-friendly. Our communication spanned multiple methods, including email, phone calls, and Slack. That probably created gaps, but they always responded within one day. 

What did you find most impressive about this company?

I could rely on their key leaders to call me back if I had an issue. They were extremely friendly, kind, and smart, and their knowledge of SEO and development was exceptional. 

Are there any areas for improvement?

They should streamline their communication channels and QA process.

We wanted to work with a company who could build and drive traffic to our website, answer customers' questions about our product, and ensure a smooth e-commerce pathway for our customers to make purchases. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Matchbox Design Group came to our location in Oregon to conduct a photo shoot for the company. They took and edited professional pictures of our employees and the work we do here to add to the website. 

After creating a sitemap, they helped us develop and roll out a new website for our products.  They designed the site to be seamless. For our branding, they changed some wording in our copy. They applied a consistent theme and messaging to the overall website. Since it launched, they’ve been running SEO and social media marketing campaigns.

What is the team composition? 

We have four main contacts from Matchbox Design Group. I work with them at least 3–4 times monthly during the website development process and once or twice each month on our digital marketing campaigns since it went live.

I spent a lot of time researching local vendors in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. When I couldn't find a team locally I wanted to work with, I broadened my search and found Matchbox Design Group.

We've been working together since November 2016.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We're extremely happy with the results of our new website and the volume of traffic it has been receiving. Our customers can now contact us through our site. As a direct-to-consumer business, being able to interface with our customers through this platform has been exponentially better than what we had before. 

How did Matchbox Design Group perform from a project management standpoint?

Matchbox Design Group's responsiveness and correspondence are phenomenal. They set deadlines and committed to them. Using filesharing and Basecamp makes it much easier to collaborate. 

The team is very professional and excels at maintaining communication. It’s easy to get ahold of and talk with them. We generally correspond via phone and email. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

The level of commitment and energy Matchbox Design Group brings to the project has really blown me away. I could tell that they were extremely excited to work with us across the board. They're highly motivated, stick to commitments, and ensure clients receive the best customer service possible.

I’m the general manager at a Habitat for Humanity ReStore. I operate two retail facilities where we take in donations of new and use remodeling supplies and sell them to the public at a discount. We use those funds to build Habitat for Humanity homes in the area.

What challenge were you trying to address with Matchbox Design Group?

With nonprofits, marketing is generally a challenge because of its expense. One of the more cost-effective means of communication is through a website. Our website was last redesigned in 1997. We had to change that. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Matchbox Design Group updated our website with a personal touch. Many people think of Habitat for Humanity as a home building service; they don’t think of the families that go into those homes. Their team focused our site around that.

I wanted a website where users can get anywhere in the site within three clicks. Their team improved navigation and functionality. They made it easier for users to schedule a donation pickup.

During the process, we had three meetings where we went over artwork, design, and other functionalities, making sure we were all on the same page. Matchbox Design Group now provides maintenance when needed.

How did you come to work with Matchbox Design Group?

I sent out a request for proposals, contacting five local companies. I chose three to come in and speak to a larger group within the organization. There were two proposals made to us, and the one Matchbox presented felt like it was made for us, which is a massive difference. They listened to what we needed and understood. They have worked with other nonprofits prior, and put together appealing concepts and artwork.

We worked together from September 2017 to May 2018.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Through our website, donations were from 30 per month to 161 per month. There was a significant increase in financial gifts-in-kind contributions as well.

How did Matchbox Design Group perform from a project management standpoint?

Matchbox Design Group catered to us, delivering a product that exceeded expectations. We enjoyed working with them.

The longest we had to wait for anything was 24 hours. If an urgent issue came up, their team worked hard to get it fixed immediately. Right before a fundraiser, the form for selling tickets wasn’t operating as expected. Matchbox Design Group fixed it within two hours.

It was a great choice to work with Matchbox Design Group. If you can find fun in your work, that’s always a good thing.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Other than the performative website, Matchbox Design Group’s work throughout the whole project was fantastic. It’s hard to articulate, but comparing them to other providers, their team knew what they were doing and knew what we wanted. That was the reason we went with Matchbox Design Group.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They were trying out a new client correspondence system, and we were one of the first clients to use it. By the end of our engagement, our team had an excellent grasp utilizing the software and collaborating efficiently. But a little more instruction could’ve been had in the beginning. That’s the only criticism I’ve had during the entire process.

Any advice for potential customers?
