All the user stories were delivered. There were no major delays in delivery. Currently, the platform is
being productionized by the Client and getting positive user feedback.

How did MAKIMO perform from a project management standpoint?

They had the desire to complete quality projects. There was complete transparency throughout the
entire project. They were transparent across the entire project and have been using Jira and Slack for
project management and communication purposes.

There’s not much I’d suggest they could improve. Every project has corrections and improvements. It
is important to find them out and implement them.

I’m the owner and CEO of 233 Analytics. We’re a technology consulting firm that does a lot of bespoke software development and consulting in the IT space.

We’ve worked with them on three projects. Our biggest build is a distributed digital learning platform specifically for teaching elementary mathematics.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We had a proof of concept developed by student workers and researchers to make sure that students could work in this environment. It leveraged an existing tool that wasn’t designed for distributed work or scalability. 

What Makimo did was rebuild the app from the ground up in JavaScript using more professional web standards. They re-engineered the way the app communicated, stripped out unnecessary work, and implemented a more scalable system that a real-world classroom can interact with.

We work with five developers. There’s also a project manager, but I’ve handled the bulk of project management and interact with the developers directly.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Compared to external developers I’ve worked with in the past, the quality of code delivered by Makimo is very high. It was built with Docker and Docker Compose, which made for a just few simple steps to get it up and running. I’ve not had an experience like that before. 

Overall, there have been very few issues identified after the delivery, so their testing processes are strong. The way they delivered the code worked well with the continuous integration and deployment environment parameters that I gave them. 

How did Makimo perform from a project management standpoint?

I speak with the designated project manager once a week. We’re always in touch about costs, estimated hours, and more. However, I’ve done most of the hardcore project management myself

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re very easy to work with. We set up Slack so I can talk directly with the team. We have an ongoing conversation that is informal and allows them to rapidly address issues.

What challenge were you trying to address with Makimo?

We brought on Makimo to enhance an existing web-based platform that requires revisions almost every year. The tool is used by our counterparts located in various countries.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The team provided design and development expertise for the online tool. They offered their insight on the design of a dashboard module by creating a visual presentation of the data. The presentation, which included graphs, could be downloaded as a PDF.

One-third of the features on the tool were developed by Makimo. They created new functionalities, including a module for entering expenditure data. The software has been developed using a Django framework and a MySQL management system running on a Linux server. We use Bitbucket to both track error reports and save our source code.

They consistently meet our goals—delivering the revised software on deadline. We continue to work with them because they continue to produce quality solutions. 

How did Makimo perform from a project management standpoint?

I’ve had no issues with the team’s project management. They estimate the amount of time it will take to produce a deliverable before starting a project. This ensures we’re always aware of when to expect a solution. Makimo also excels at raising issues early on, so we can address them before it’s too late. Their specialists always communicate with our IT department about any new releases that need to be deployed to servers.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their strong project management skills sets them apart from other vendors. They always inject business analysis into the work they do, and so we collaborate to determine our business needs. We appreciate how they don’t rely on us to provide all of the requirements.

Are there any areas they could improve?

A wider array of services would be appreciated. That way, we could use their services for other types of platforms we’re maintaining.

It may be difficult for a non-technical stakeholder to communicate technical requirements to Makimo. So, it would be helpful for future clients to engage an IT department with the vendor. In our case, a technical stakeholder communicates with the team.

We needed a developer familiar with foreign exchance systems who could port our desktop application over to our liquidity provider’s platform.

What was the scope of their involvement?

While our in-house forex system ran on a Windows-based NT 4.0 platform, X Open Hub, our liquidity provider, relied on a web-based application. Makimo used HTML5 and a Mongo database to translate our financial system to the API of X Open Hub.

As project manager on our end, I communicated directly with their CEO. He had a team that included a lead developer and two application developers.

How did you come to work with Makimo?

We had trouble finding developers with knowledge of our liquidity provider’s API. We reached out to X Open Hub and they recommended Makimo, one of their third-party developers.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We were a startup without any in-house developers when we first reached out to Makimo. Being able to incorporate their industry expertise gave us more time to focus on our clients and improved our efficiency and productivity.

They also saved us a lot of money. A U.S.-based developer unfamiliar with the forex market could have could have cost us nearly twice as much.

How did Makimo perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re based in Poland, so communication was an initial concern because of the time difference. Despite that obstacle, Makimo makes themselves readily available no matter the time of day, even if that means staying after hours to accommodate our schedule.

The language barrier has also never been an issue. Their CEO speaks fluent English, understands our priorities, and is able to convey our goals to their developers.

We never meet face-to-face and communicate primarily via email and Skype meetings. They’re very responsive, provide immediate support for any issues that arise, and keep us informed of any schedule changes on their end.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Programmers can sometimes be intimidating when they use obscure, technical language, but Makimo is very customer-oriented. They spoke in terms we can understand, asked a lot of questions, and made sure our requests were specified in formal documents before they began writing code.

They also worked efficiently. If we provided specifications, they were able to quickly produce a working example. This was partly due to their keen understanding of the API software.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything. We've had a longstanding relationship with them because they’re an excellent partner.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

The time difference has played a factor at times, so that’s something to consider when reaching out to them. Makimo provides after-hours contact information, but they’re not on call 24/7.

I am the founder and CEO of AnOliveBranch.com, a novel, quick, low cost, online conflict resolution process. For what reason(s) did your company hire Makimo sp. z o.o.?

We are professional dispute resolution experts, and in the current absence of any adequate online Case/Client Management System, it means that our clients' ability to engage our services is dependent on our geographical proximity, access, and convenience to them and to locations where meetings can be held with the two disputing parties. As mediators, arbitrators, and conciliators, we haven't had the ability to assist our clients online or remotely until AnOliveBranch.com was created.

We needed software developers to build our platform from scratch. Although we had a clear vision, design, and road map of how the online process would work and what it had to achieve for our customers, we needed the expertise of a development house to help us create a quick online process that was simple, intuitive and easy for them to use. I hired Makimo to help me take that vision and design and create our platform from start to finish

What were your goals for this project?

Our primary goal was to create an online solution to the shortcomings and disadvantages of all the current offline methods of dispute resolutions. We analyzed the existing offline dispute resolution processes and, taking the most effective elements while dispensing with the non-effective ones, we created our AnOliveBranch.com to achieve that goal.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We met with several IT providers (bespoke software developers) and became quite disillusioned by the cost and complexity of what they were all proposing. We feared that our vision would never be realized unless we were prepared to make a significant and unlimited investment which, as a start-up, was not viable.

Through a series of introductions we met with Makimo (online, as we are based in Ireland and Makimo are in Poland), and from the very outset, their approach stood in stark contrast to all others we met.

Makimo took the time to explore our needs and see whether they were reasonably achievable at a reasonable cost. Before any work was commenced, they were prepared to work with us to flesh out our business requirements, which served to further prove to us that our platform was viable and sustainable.

We then agreed to the financials and started the project. What cannot be over-emphasized here is the human element of our decision - their staff put pride in their quality, efficiency, and suitability of their work for the client/project before their concern for payment. If they couldn’t assist, or if they felt that the client's suggestion on something is not the best way to achieve their need, the staff will always come up with better suggestions.

After agreeing on the scope of the work, they began creating the first iteration. Communication thereafter and throughout was constant, and not locked into any specific, rigid, restrictive method (e.g. fixed days or ways in which to give feedback). They were so responsive, it was as if they were our own in-house IT team.

They were excellent at delivering what we had envisaged, and their English is fluent, nothing got lost in translation. They also doubled as consultants in that if they saw a better way to achieve our process goals, they'd give us their thoughts in detail rather than simply acting on our requests.

I dealt with Makimo from start to finish, and whenever we needed a particular feature to be added or completed by a certain deadline (e.g. for a formal presentation or demonstration of the site to prospective customers), they never let me down. Their staff would either stay on late or come in early to make sure it was in place and working for our meeting.

What was the team composition?

I dealt with one of Makimo's team exclusively at the beginning, and mainly throughout the project, although I know he was supported by several other team members behind the scenes. Having him as my one point of contact made the project so simple from my perspective, and we quickly reached a point where he knew our service better than I did, even though I created and designed it!

When he had to be elsewhere (e.g. on holidays or out sick), he never failed to keep me updated, and always had another designated member of his team cover for him. This second member was every bit as impressive to work with, which clearly demonstrated to me that they have a ‘delivery’ culture and to 'become their clients' so that they immerse themselves in your project to understand as much (and more) than you do about what needs to be built.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

AnOliveBranch.com is meant to be a new 'tool' in the toolbox of dispute resolution professionals. Like many industries, existing practices have become the norm, regardless of the fact that they may be wholly outdated.

Our online platform brings efficiencies and automation to archaic methods of existing dispute resolution processes. It is designed to help the public access justice and resolve conflict with others at a low cost, friendly, and non-confrontational way. It is also designed to help dispute resolution practitioners provide their services more efficiently and quickly, and at a lower cost to themselves and their clients.

Mediators who use our site have given very positive feedback, which is not only a testament to how innovative our platform is but also how well it was developed by Makimo. The combination of expert Mediator-input and good old-fashioned letter writing (prepared by powerful “tech” in the background) delivers Mediation in a very succinct and persuasive manner, but privately and at the user’s pace and convenience.

Some of the feedback we’ve gotten included great ease-of-use for users and an impressive system performance. Consumers and clients demand online redress options when they have complaints or disputes. An OliveBranch.com now facilitates access to mediation that was previously unavailable offline. This may be used as a tool by mediators in enhancing their professional practice or may be accessed directly by disputing parties.

This latter option is a most novel development. Using the site helps avoid the formalities and logistics of live, offline mediation and gives clients and dispute resolution practitioners alike a friendly, quick, and simple online option to use that removes face-to-face confrontation.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

We used Trello to itemise each individual task, and Makimo's attention to detail is noteworthy. They were especially excellent at managing expectations. They call it as they see it, sometimes telling me if mine were unreasonable, yet in a helpful and customer-friendly way.

Long projects where you work constantly with an external consultant can be challenging to maintain, and patience can run thin at times. This is not necessarily a reflection of either side, but expectations can and do change. Of course, I admit that this happened during our project, yet at no stage was our relationship ever threatened. If anything, it got better as we went on.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

From my own experience of being a customer and a service provider for many decades, I have learnt that problems will always arise, and my rule of thumb is to evaluate how good the parties are at resolving the problem when it does. Makimo has been the best I've dealt with.

I have expanded our engagement to include development for other businesses I run. It was easy to take all of my software development requirements away from my existing providers and move them lock, stock, and barrel to Makimo. 

Are there any areas for improvement?

I honestly can’t think of any areas for improvement. If I did, I would be splitting hairs and verging on being impossible to please. In truth, I am difficult to please, I admit that. I simply want things to be done once and done right. I don't think this is too much to expect, but unfortunately, my experience has served to make me expect providers in all walks of business to ultimately disappoint.

Makimo has restored my faith in, not only service providers but in my own expectations. I had accepted that mine were always more than service providers were likely to reach. Makimo proved me wrong. They have gone further and exceeded my expectations.

IceBreaker is a location-based event app that allows users to check out events around them in real time, with video and other imagery. It also allows businesses to make videos of events in their locations and put those into a feed. It essentially shows users what's happening here and now. I am the co-owner.

What challenge were you trying to address with Makimo?

I needed help building a native application.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

I'd gone through development cycles with a few people, but the application wasn’t built to scale and would’ve crumbled after 10,000 users. It was a web application at the time.

We handed off the source code to Makimo, and they ran stress testing to locate the bottlenecks and where the platform would've crumbled. We developed a high-level architecture of the product and its narrative. They walked us through every single user experience and how that would function in the app. From there, they developed business specifications and required functionality documentation. In order to avoid delays, we froze everything before they started writing any code.

The application is fairly heavy, as there's a lot going on. There are many APIs from Google, Facebook, Twitter, and others. The backend was written in Django Python.

Users can send notifications and requests into locations and events, and the fact that Makimo was able to build and architect it all out is very cool. There's a lot of hard engineering involved. They were unable to use Amazon servers, so they had to replicate and deploy that functionality within the backend of the app. Their architect is really on the ball.

What is the team dynamic?

We worked with 4–6 people from their team at any given time. We initially engaged with Krzysztof [CEO, Makimo], and Mateusz [Architect, Makimo] was involved from day 1. We also had another 2 developers, and Justyna [Project Manager, Makimo] was project managing on their end.

How did you come to work with Makimo?

I was referred to Makimo by an acquaintance who worked with them in the past. They're nice guys and easy to get along with, their English is good, and they cut straight to the point. You know you’re going to get what you asked for with them.

How much have you invested in them?

We spent around 50,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked with them in April 2015 and up to this past April. We've already started to engage with them again on upcoming projects.

The app was deployed on both iOS and Android, but it's on the shelf at the moment, as I’m trying to raise more funding to make a big marketing and advertising splash.

We did user testing with students and received positive feedback. They all loved the idea that they could check out what was happening at a location before going there.

They were great. We used Trello to plan out the application, the functionalities that still had to be built. We mostly used email, phone, and Slack to communicate.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They're well organized and have a high level of professionalism and good capability. Fully stacked, they're comfortable with different types of technology.

When they say they will do something, they will do it and within certain timelines—unless someone changes the functionality or business requirements. If everything is frozen solid, they don’t mess around. They lay the foundations quickly and start writing code as quickly as they can.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It would be better if they had a UI/UX designer for mobile apps.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Don’t change the specification of the product or system while it is being built. Get your business and functionality specifications, freeze it, and let them build it. Although they're willing to pivot, they're right in that it makes it hard to determine the price and how it will change the scope of the project.

I am the founder of Rush Hour Analytics, which is an event-based analytics platform. We take events from mobile devices, web APIs, and anything that could generate an event and then provide libraries to developers and allow them to run real-time analytics.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Makimo?

We had a skill shortage when it came to the mobile side of things and needed help developing a client software development kit (SDK).

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We did all the backend for the SDK ourselves, but we didn’t have mobile skills, which is where they came in. The project was a client SDK, and our target audience was other developers who could download the SDK that Makimo built and start using it straight away with a simple sign-up process on our site. We had platforms for Android as well as iPhone. For Android, they used Java.

The main core functionality was to have the drop in SDK. In using an SDK, there is a lot of setup and configuration, and we wanted it to be easy for a developer to consume this SDK. We came up with a mechanism to securely authenticate the application. This was complex at the time because OAuth was only beginning to come out in the market and gaining traction. The team was effective because they write apps all the time, and they know good client libraries versus bad client libraries and know what developers are looking for when they consume a library into an app.

They also helped with the method to add and remove an event, send an event, etc. This was all done nicely and cleanly in code, as we have to review the code as well. It is very easy for any developer to use regardless of their capability and experience, which was what we were looking for. They also built a jQuery Plug-in that allows us to collect events from web pages.

I have engaged them in other projects as well. I can throw any language at them, and they can do it.

We had 4 resources from their team at one time including a project manager.

Initially, one of my colleagues recommended them. I had engaged with Makimo previously with another company. They were very capable and understood programming well, especially mobile. Makimo knew what they were doing. Having used them before, we decided to use them for this company’s project.

It was quite a while ago, and I don’t recall when we initially began working together, but I still engage with them on different projects.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We were trying to write an SDK for a year, and they were able to get it done in a couple of weeks. Once we had the SDK out and deployed, we were able to move on to the next tranche of work. Their solution was very neat and slick. It sat in the background consuming minimal resources and was very battery-friendly. They thought of things that we hadn’t and figured it all out for us. They met all the timelines and exceeded some of them as well, which is why I keep coming back to them. They were great with deliverability.

How did Makimo perform from a project management standpoint?

At that time, it was more of a Scrum and Agile approach, and everything was broken up into sprints. We generally started off the day with a stand-up, which I would be involved in to see what was going on and what the targets were as they were accessing our test platforms as well. I can’t think of any problem I had with them during that project. They were on task and would deliver every 2 weeks, and it was one of the easiest projects I have had. We went from early proof of concept into refinement, into tweaking, and it was a very quick process.

Predominantly, we used our own JIRA, and tracked issues and managed development that way. They had their own tools as well, in addition to Skype, IRC, Slack or HipChat. When there were formalities, it was email based to make sure everyone was on the same page. If there were clarifications needed, we always pinned them down to make sure there was no room for misinterpretation.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They understand the development lifecycle process very well. They are exceptional programmers and have a good understanding of both traditional and upcoming technology. They can take a very high-level description of an app and break it down quickly into a core component. From there, they manage it quite well, which is something that developers don’t normally do. They have the ability to learn very quickly, which is not common. They focus on breaking things down into the base components, keep it simple and start from there, and then they add their complexity layers on top of that. This type of approach is very good when you are developing any piece of software. Finding good developers and people who get the development lifecycle is quite difficult, and they are very good at it.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I like them as they are. I still engage with them on other projects every now and then. I wouldn’t be coming back if they needed to improve. That being said, they are very open to feedback as well.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Make sure you have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with them. You don’t have to have all of the technology answers, but have a good idea as to what you want to do and articulate that to their team. They will understand it quickly and will come back to you with questions. They have a very good communication flow in the discovery process. Enjoy that process with them, as they like it as well, and they enjoy learning new things.
