I’m an investment partner at Kalaari Capital, a venture firm based in India. We manage about $650 million across 3 funds.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lollypop Design Studio?

As a venture firm, a big part of our business consists of attracting, communicating to, and working with entrepreneurs. The challenge we had was telling the Kalaari story, as well as those of the various startups we work with. We needed a website to serve as a communication medium for sharing those stories.

There were 2 parts to our engagement with Lollypop: working on our own platform and those of our portfolio companies. Our partners have built various applications with Lollypop. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They primarily designed, developed, and deployed a website for our company. We canned our previous site and had Lollypop redesign it from scratch using PHP.

The main design challenge for us was displaying stories in the form of text and video, as well as through the events we organize. We write a lot of articles to facilitate communication with our investment partners, and we wanted a site that melds multimedia content without creating a dense feel. The page was supposed to be refreshing, light, and easy to scroll through. It also needed to have a modern look. Our main users consist of startup, media, and existing portfolio companies.

We worked with a program lead or project owner from Lollypop’s side, as well as with a designer and the people who implemented the site. We haven’t used Lollypop for any marketing work.

How did you come to work with Lollypop Design Studio?

We chose Lollypop because we’d heard good things from other portfolio companies that had worked with them.

How much have you invested with Lollypop Design Studio?

The cost of their work has been between $15,000 and $20,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Lollypop in December 2016 or January 2017, but we had known them for a couple of years. It’s an ongoing relationship. The website was finished almost 2 months ago and will go live this week, after we’ve gotten some material from our portfolio company. We may build extensions for a sister company called Kstart in the future.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or impact of the engagement?

We’ve done an internal review of the site, and the biggest piece of feedback across the firm was that it looked a lot more pleasing to the eye and communicated our entrepreneur stories much more clearly. These were our goals. We’ve invested in over 60 companies, and we wanted all 60 to be conveyed in a way that showed the trials and tribulations of being a startup.

Being able to integrate our partners’ Twitter and LinkedIn feeds, along with everything they’ve published on those platforms, in a streamlined format was another major result.

How did Lollypop Design Studio perform from a project management standpoint?

The collaboration was smooth overall. We had hiccups here and there, but I give Lollypop a lot of credit for problem-resolution. Once we identified an issue, they were willing to travel to our office and discuss it, which we enjoyed.

What did you find most impressive about Lollypop Design Studio?

They have a very good eye for identifying what we’re trying to accomplish and what kind of look and feel would work well. We hired Lollypop specifically for these skills, as a group that could refresh our design approach.

Are there any areas Lollypop Design Studio could improve?

Lollypop is growing quickly, and they need to find enough resources in order to manage multiple clients at the same time. This is something the owner has discussed with us. It will be a big business challenge for Lollypop, but they’ve built a strong enough brand name to attract people in India, so hopefully this will be resolved.

I am a technical advisor for a university client. I have no direct affiliation with them now. I did have a position at the university previously and connected Lollypop with them. I act as supervisor for the project.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lollypop Design Studio?

We needed to develop software that would be used by libraries and museums. We wanted someone to create attractive designs for our web-based program. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The product processes and delivers email addresses of eminent individuals for historical and cultural research. It exists exclusively as a web platform. Lollypop helped us with user interaction design.

They started by designing a logo and moved on to the look and feel, particularly the visual elements and UX of the application. Lollypop designed the initial versions of several screens based on the mockups we presented.

They did not talk to our users directly for research, but we do this regularly and had multiple calls with Lollypop explaining what our users wanted. It would have been logistically difficult for Lollypop to interact with our user base directly, as they’re based in India, while most of our members are in US universities. All we did was pass along user requirements to them, while Lollypop did comparisons with other current email interfaces and synthesized a design.

They’ve typically only produced wireframe-level designs, but they also created and implemented a small web page.

We have been working with Lollypop for over 3 years over 5–6 sprints. Every time, we have worked with 2 consistent resources, while the rest of the team has had some churn. In total, we’ve interacted with 6–7 people.

How did you come to work with Lollypop Design Studio?

They were recommended to us by a friend, who had used the team for a small project. We didn’t know any other companies, so we started a conversation and gave Lollypop a small job to start. They delivered a good result, so we kept going back to them. We didn’t have a formal process in place.

How much have you invested with Lollypop Design Studio?

The cost of their work has been about $15,000–$20,000 in total.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Lollypop Design in late 2014 or early 2015. The collaboration is ongoing. We go back to them every few months for new feature designs.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or impact of the engagement?

Quantitatively, it would be hard to determine the success of their work. We haven’t actually completed the product or launched it formally. We have launched intermediate versions, but the overall platform is not complete.

Qualitatively, the visual design has been appreciated by our few users, who tend to work at museums and cultural organizations. They are quite conservative about design choices, but Lollypop’s work has been appreciated by our base. They’ve reported that it looks modern but not trendy. We’ve been happy with the UX and logo designed by Lollypop. They gave us multiple options, most of which were very good.

How did Lollypop Design Studio perform from a project management standpoint?

They’ve performed well, and their young team is constantly growing. Many resources have been reassigned to other projects, but Lollypop provided a good manager who understood our requirements well and trained the new people joining our project.

Lollypop introduced us to Trello a few years ago, which we used for some time. We now use a tool called Prodpad with Lollypop.

What did you find most impressive about Lollypop Design Studio?

I think that they deliver high-quality results, and they’ve been pleasant partners to work with. Lollypop has been understanding and never rushed to complete a project based on the number of hours. They care about the work and have been very accommodating. The team focuses on quality, even in little things like their business cards and office design. They have a great culture.

Are there any areas Lollypop Design Studio could improve?

I can’t think of any areas for improvement, but there have been challenges with Lollypop’s rapid growth. Many new people have come on board, and maintaining the quality and the team management (particularly in cases like ours, with long-running projects) can be a challenge.

I work for a chain of schools called Global Indian International School. We were founded in Singapore in 2002, and are headquartered there now. We operate 23 campuses across 7 countries — 6 in Singapore, as well as ones in Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, India, and UAE), catering to K-12 students.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lollypop Design Studio?

As a part of our offering, we have a school ERP [enterprise resource planning] and information system with some built-in modules which enhance the collaboration among students, teachers and parents. This is a homegrown tech product with the main purpose of improving productivity and collaboration between stakeholders and bringing consistency to the different campuses that we operate. There are many options on the market, but, when we started building our own, there was no tech offering, especially for schools, at the scale we wanted to operate in.

The engagement with Lollypop is to simplify things due to the legacy systems we’d built and to upgrade the product with valuable feedback from users.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Lollypop’s first scope of involvement was research. The objective of the project was to take a user first approach for the different stakeholders of the app. This meant identifying the different personas, their pain points, goals and wishlists. This was important since the web app is spread across different stakeholders including academics, parents, students, finance, admissions, transport etc. The research outcome helped in clear decision making based on user choices. We understood which product modules should be made into mobile apps and what improvements are required on the web app.

The UX/UI part of the project is a fairly broad scope. We have completed the first design phase of 3 user personas and we are working on the 4th one as of now. We have been working with a UX lead and 3 designers. On the UI side, we have a lead and 2-3 designers on a retainer engagement.

How did you come to work with Lollypop Design Studio?

We found lollypop through a google search, verified their credentials and evaluated a number of agencies from a UX and UI point of view, starting with 5 and narrowing the choice down to 3. We presented our scope to each one, and Lollypop Design proved to be the best choice.

How much have you invested with Lollypop Design Studio?

We have multiple projects running, with different pricing models. Lollypop’s work as of now has probably been north of $40,000, but below $80,000. This range might increase going forward.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Lollypop Design around September 2016. The project is ongoing, and we plan to have a long-term relationship with Lollypop.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

None of our apps are live yet. They have just passed the UI stage, and are in development. Hence, there is no feedback available yet from a user standpoint to gauge the impact. However, from a design standpoint, their work is amazing.

How did Lollypop Design Studio perform from a project management standpoint?

We have not had any problems from a project management standpoint, we have been working directly with their UX team. We have made progress every day on different fronts and we are impressed with Lollypop Design’s project management. It is also good from a development standpoint to work with one design agency rather than manage the design and development separately.

What did you find most impressive about Lollypop Design Studio?

Research helps. It was good advice from the Lollypop design team to start the project with user research and focus groups. I like the fact that they have a core design competency with a clear focus on creating good design.

Are there any areas Lollypop Design Studio could improve?

One area of improvement would be understanding the business implication of products. This provides additional data points on some aspects that might have been missed during the research stage of user interviews.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

Our company, Skiwee, has a home services mobile app that allows users to connect with service providers, such as plumbers and cleaners. They can track the status of the job, and even pay directly once the job is finished. The backend of our system assigns each customer request based on the type of request, skill level, and location, and then directly connects with the corresponding provider. It’s essentially an on-demand home services company. I’m the co-founder of the company.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lollypop Design?

We only have development and coding skills in-house, so we needed some design help for our mobile app and our website. We decided not to hire an in-house designer, but rather contract with a design studio.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Lollypop took down all the requirements and completed the design for our app. We then incorporated their design into the app we were developing. The scope of their work included the app design, logo, branding, and print media work. They didn’t just design for the application, but for our overall brand.

Before we gave them the requirements, they did research on similar companies in our space. They provided an analysis, based on that research, on how they could use the right design to increase our company’s impact. The first step was sitting down with a user experience person. He is the one who guided us. We’ve never worked with a design studio, and they made the process run smoothly for us. Then they started giving us mockups for approval and took it from there.

We initially approached them for just Android design. We liked them, so we asked them to do the design work on the website as well. Our market is primarily Android users, so we signed the contract for an iOS version later, only a few months ago. We then had them do a second version of our website recently.

We worked with a project manager and one UX guy initially, then they brought in a UI guy. There was another person involved in the logo and branding. I had direct access to the people on the project, which I appreciated.

They used PSP for the Android and iOS development. For the website, they did the frontend development with HTML and CSS. The API and backend were all done by us.

How did you come to work with Lollypop Design?

We wanted to find a local firm, so we could interact with them on a regular basis. We spoke with several design companies and decided on Lollypop. It turned out to be a good decision, and we’re happy we did.

I had an initial meeting with an account manager, and I related to him well. He talked about how Lollypop doesn’t just work with established companies: they also understand the needs of a startup, which I appreciated. That was lacking in the other companies we had met.

We’ve spent $20,000-$30,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in February on 2016, and the major work is complete. We have an annual contract with them for minor fixes and maintenance.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

It was a seamless experience for the most part. Creating a request was a very straightforward process.

During the UX process, their designer helped us organize and define the process users would go through to request a home service. He broke it down into three categories: what, when and where. Once this information is entered, the user goes to the next screen. Our market in India is not very experienced using this type of service, so the suggestions he made to keep the process simple helped us target that specific market.

How did Lollypop Design perform from a project management standpoint?

We had direct access to the designers, and I preferred it that way. The project manager was straightforward and friendly. I honestly liked the way they worked. We used Skype to communicate. They would upload their work on Trello and I could provide feedback right there.

What did you find most impressive about Lollypop Design?

I haven’t worked with other design companies, so I can’t comment on that. We are very satisfied with the work Lollypop has done for us.

Are there any areas Lollypop Design could improve?

This was the first time we worked on this type of project, so there were some miscommunications. Our communication could have been clearer. I can’t say it’s their problem, but they could have guided us in a better way. We learned from our mistakes, and it got much easier.

Upstox is a retail brokerage firm based in Mumbai focusing on delivering an online trading platform that users can sign up for, buy and sell stocks using our app. I am co-founder and CTO.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lollypop?

We had a problem in structuring our design language. We needed a unified theme that expressed what we stood for. We consulted with Lollypop to help us with what our brand means, who are target customers are, and how we can use the design to convey that.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Lollypop helped us design the logo regarding the colors and theme. Lollypop also helped to name our company. After that had been established, the app design was created. Lollypop helped us understand how a modern trading and investing application should look. The domain knowledge and expertise came from our side, but they did have UX specialties we didn’t have, so we relied on them for that. Lollypop helped with user studies to understand who our users are and what they do. Once they understood our users and our brand, they were able to continue the project from there.

How did you come to work with Lollypop?

We discovered Lollypop through a Google search along with some other companies. We went to see them face-to-face and got a sense of their design work and how their process works. We decided to hire them, and it’s grown from there.

We began working with them in early 2014. We’ve built our design team using their expertise to hire designers. We consult with Lollypop about our projects to ensure our apps are in line with industry standards.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

Our customers love the design. Before we had the name Upstox we were using initials, so it’s easier for users to remember the name and the logo. We don't have hard metrics but based on the studies we’ve done with Lollypop; our customers are more actively engaged with our app. 

How did Lollypop perform from a project management standpoint?

I’ve been working with them since they were a small company and the past year has been very good. As they’ve grown, they now have client relationship managers, project managers, and designers that are assigned to the tasks. We agree on the deadlines, and they have no problem understanding our requirements. We’re very satisfied with them.

What did you find most impressive about Lollypop?

I think it’s rare to find a consultancy firm that really excels in what they do and passionately believes in the power of design language, illustration, and user experience. That’s something I found with Anil, the founder of Lollypop, when I first met him. They’ve done a really good job of scaling the team to make sure the level of quality is still there. We’ve worked with other firms that have one or two people who are talented but no matter who we work with at Lollypop, the quality has always been great.

Are there any areas Lollypop could improve?

They are scaling, so sometimes it’s difficult for me to contact them because they’re so busy. When I have any new engagements, I know I have to schedule the project in advance to make sure I get the right resources.

Our company is a startup which is focused on telematics devices. We have 30 employees. I am the chief technology officer and co-founder.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lollypop Design Studio?

We wanted to do a branding exercise to create a logo and build a website. We wanted to define a complete brand.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We had heard about branding but didn’t know what the process would be. Lollypop Design Studio assisted us through the process by helping us define the logo, the design style guide, and the complete web design. That included not only the design but also the coding of the design into an HTML/CSS page so that I can host web pages on the website.

Lollypop followed a very systematic design process. Lollypop had a questionnaire that we filled out and they gave us several iterations of the logo based on the questions that were asked. For the website, they did wireframing, mood boarding, and the actual design. When the design was done, we also did a responsive design and everything was coded by Lollypop. If there was a change we wanted to make, they made those changes. They followed a good process and there were people responsible for each of the stages. We had a good experience.

How did you come to work with Lollypop Design Studio?

We were dissatisfied with another company that we contacted first. We searched online and talked to a lot of people. We wanted a firm that was nearby, and we tried a couple but didn’t have the confidence in them. Lollypop’s website design and blog content were professionally done and that’s what attracted us to them. When we contacted them, they were very responsive.

We started the project in May 2016 and we completed it in July 2016.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We don’t have any measurable metrics because we are still in the growth stage. We just launched the product in August 2016, but the feedback has been positive. The design work was very neat and clean. We did not have a presence before this, so we have nothing to compare with.

How did Lollypop Design Studio perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management was one of their key strengths. They were very responsive. We used Trello to communicate, which we found much easier than email.

What did you find most impressive about Lollypop Design Studio?

Honesty in the project management was good. Clarity in communication is also very important. That gave us confidence that the project would be completed on time.

Are there any areas Lollypop Design Studio could improve?

They need a little more proactiveness in owning the content and design. Halfway through the project, I was giving feedback, and then I realized it should’ve come from Lollypop.

My name is Ganesh Devaraj, and I'm the founder and CEO of Soliton Technologies. Our company is headquartered in Bangalore, India. I’ve been running the company for the last 18 years. Our primary customer base is in the United States and we have operations in 5 cities there. We are a leading provider of Measurement & Automation software and solutions for the semiconductor industry.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lollypop Studio?

Our previous website was 5 or 6 years old. We wanted a newer one that would include information on the updates we had made to our business over the years. We also wanted a website that would render well on a smartphone and incorporate the latest technologies.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Getting a modern, responsive website was our priority. We wanted it to have a neat, clean design that was simple but high quality. We actually picked Lollypop Studio’s website as the best example of what we wanted. The content would come from us primarily, but they would also do some work to improve it if necessary, and then do the entire design and posting of the website. Due to a time constraint at our end, they agreed to first release a static site in time for a trade show we attended, and then provide the WordPress site. We are yet to migrate our content to the WordPress site.

We develop many software applications for our clients and we’ve also been engaging Lollypop quite regularly for their UX design. In fact, we just signed a contract with them to engage 1 UX/UI designer on a full-time basis starting in January.

How did you come to work with Lollypop Studio?

We selected the websites that we liked and then tried to find the design firms that developed them. We spoke to many firms including ones in New York and finally settled on Lollypop whose founder I met in the London airport of all places! We were first and foremost impressed by the quality of their company website. We also enjoyed meeting and interacting with their employees, who were very professional. In the end, there was no competition in our minds and we were confident in going ahead with Lollypop.

How much have you invested with Lollypop Studio?

Including the CMS integration, I think we spent about $16,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

They estimated the project would take 40 days to complete, but delays from our end had them starting a little later than planned. They still managed to finish all of the pages before our deadline, which took them about 30 days. We selected them to work for us in June. They started working on it in late June with the bulk of the work happening in July. The website went live the first week of August 2016.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We’ve only heard positive comments about our new website. Quite a few of our current and former employees have given us compliments about the website’s design. A lot of people like the videos you see when you first visit the site. Lollypop helped shoot videos of our employees, which a lot of our people say they enjoy seeing online. I haven’t heard any specific feedback from our customers, but we’ve tried to ask prospective employees how they found out about our company and what their impressions were before coming in for interviews. By and large, many of them cited our website and said the company looked good from what they saw.

Due to a few factors, we were behind in getting the website up ourselves in time for a major conference in Austin. They were quick to deliver designs for us to review, but we were very late in coming up with the content. Eventually, we decided we would not have time to get the complete website implemented the way we had hoped. Originally, our plans included a content management system that would allow us to post our own content. They stepped in and agreed to put up static pages so we would have something ready in time for the conference. They created a uniform look across the pages, but we still didn't have time to make the content fit into a nice common theme. However, I was happy and thrilled about how they responded to our situation. The show went successfully and we had the site up and running with no issues. Overall, they stood out in my mind as a company that is willing to change the terms of a project to help out their client.

How did Lollypop Studio perform from a project management standpoint?

Very good. There was 1 project manager and she was really on top of things and made things happen for us. Lollypop was particularly good at getting different people engaged at different times. They were great at responding to our needs. We had a lot of tasks we asked them to do at the last minute. For instance, we needed a lot of sketches of things we couldn't photograph. They responded by bringing in graphic designers who made sketches and renderings of our concepts and put them up on the website. They were good at managing timelines and letting us know when we needed to be involved, when an element would be sent to us, what action we would need to take when we received it, etc. All of that was well-managed by their project manager.

What did you find most impressive about Lollypop Studio?

They are well-known for their UX capabilities, which is something our website didn't necessarily need. But one of their UI designers was effective in suggesting improvements for our website and getting us to make choices that would move the project forward. We have since then used them for their UX design skills on a couple of other projects.

Are there any areas Lollypop Studio could improve?

This isn’t a huge issue, but they don't have their CMS implementation capability in-house. They have a partner company and working with this company is pretty seamless, but when it came to the commercials it took a couple of extra rounds to arrive at a negotiated total for the design and the CMS. I’m happy that Lollypop specializes in what they do, but it would have been better if we could have dealt with one company for the integrated service.

Lollypop has a team of project managers for our work. It's been seamless. We use the standard tools like Trello to assign tasks and provide feedback. We use Google Drive for file-sharing.

Lollypop has a unique position in terms of combined skillsets. They have specialists for UX as well as for design, animation, video production and project management.

We work on projects in collaboration with Lollypop. There will always be challenges, but there hasn't been one instance of things not working well.

I’m the CEO of Credit Vidya, an alternate data credit scoring company in India.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Lollypop?

There were a couple of challenges in India that we were trying to address. The first challenge is that awareness about alternative data credit scores is fairly low in India. Trying to figure out how to build that awareness was very important. Aside from end consumers who use our product, we also have vendors who assess customers' risk based on the data we provide to them. To understand the data requires a lot of UX/UI work, and designing that was the biggest challenge that we faced.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Everything that appears on the site right now, as far as marketing is concerned, is all through Lollypop. They helped us create marketing collateral, brand guidelines, a logo, and the content for the blogs on our site. They mostly did branding, logos, and our UI/UX design. We go through the entire process before the final designs are posted—consumer research, multiple prototyping, wireframing, and UI design. They built our mobile client and our dashboards, both data-backed dashboards and information dashboards. Lollypop has helped us get off our feet in India. Lollypop has a key role and not just in my start-up. I'm pretty sure they do this for other start-ups as well.

How did you come to work with Lollypop?

There are 2 reasons. First, we believe in the value that the founder already brings to the table. He has tremendous expertise and is one of the top thought leaders in UI/UX in India. The second is that we spoke with multiple agencies and freelancers, but the professionalism these guys have shown was beyond compare.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

There are multiple success stories, both from a consumer engagement perspective and a lender engagement perspective. One thing that stands out is clear branding across different products. Our UX is very simple and people understand it a lot better. Not only have we received qualitative feedback from all our clients, but we are seeing the return to our business. We were 5 employees when we first started working with Lollypop; now we have 39 employees. A lot of our product is about the design, and Lollypop played a huge part in that.

How did Lollypop perform from a project management standpoint?

I don't get actively involved in project management, but what I understand from my staff is that a Lollypop assigns a team to work on each project. They have a project manager as well as UX/UI people. Whenever a resource is required, they bring that person on board. That's how they move forward. They have Basecamp, Slack, and Trello, although I haven't used Basecamp with them.

What did you find most impressive about Lollypop?

Lollypop is very close to my heart. Back when Credit Vidya had absolutely nothing, Lollypop was the first design agency who trusted our idea and our value proposition. Their professionalism and expertise in building UI/UX stand out. I’m also impressed by their understanding of Indian consumers. They build experiences for customers rather than building experiences because the business wants it. They aim to understand their consumers really well before they put pen to paper. I like that. They have pushed me multiple times, saying what I'm doing is not necessarily how the product will evolve. Having the thought leadership in this space and pushing us back into a relevant prototype allows us to build better products. I respect them for that.

Are there any areas Lollypop could improve?

Lollypop is a small team. As they grow and more clients approach them, their capacity has to increase to fulfill the demand they're generating. That’s one of the things I believe could help them improve.
