We developed the Plan Well Guide, a one-stop-shop planning tool. It helps people with severe and advanced illnesses plan for an unexpected medical emergency. It provides our users with the information they need to make educated decisions in critical situations.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Lattice Studios?

We already had a functional WordPress site, but there were many problems that we couldn’t solve.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Lattice Studios came to redevelop our site and change the look and feel of it. We first discussed how they wanted to go through with it, and we provided some documentation to help them. Next, they recommended developing the site using a JavaScript framework on the frontend and Firebase on the backend. After we approved their suggestions, the Lattice Studios team built it from the ground up and set up an integrated system between the front- and backend.

The site is now live, but they continue to update it. We’re currently working together to integrate some of our online courses into our site. Our internal team built the courses using Articulate 360, so the team is learning the software to set up a custom environment for those features.

What is the team composition?

We only work with Ali (Full Stack Developer & Co-Founder). He fulfills any tasks we need for the site. 

How did you come to work with Lattice Studios?

We were referred to Ali by a business associate. Although we talked to a few companies, we decided to go with Lattice Studios because of their price and abilities. 

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between $30,000–$40,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together in September 2020, and it’s ongoing. They continue to add more features and provide maintenance on the site.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The site they’ve created has more features and is more scalable than our old one. The platforms they used are adaptable and easy to use. It gives us a headstart when it comes to newer applications. We’ve done a series of user reviews and received excellent feedback on the website. The bulk of our problems have been with the content, but we never had any issues with the code and system developed by Lattice Studios. Any bugs that we’ve encountered have been quickly identified and resolved. We’re able to push updates that solve the problems quickly. I’m very confident in the work they’ve done — Lattice Studios has a lot of foresight, and every decision they make is well thought out. I appreciate all of their efforts.

How did Lattice Studios perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management is excellent — we’ve had good, constant communication with them. Updates are also always detailed and specific. Before the project even began, we already had a lot of correspondence. In the beginning, they walked us through our different options when it came to the platforms, which we appreciate. Their suggestions are always professional and effective.

I act as the project manager, and the Lattice Studios team really makes my job easier. Scheduling and organizing tasks are straightforward. They weren’t familiar with our preferred software, but they were willing to adapt to it. In addition, the team is very communicative and easy to reach, which is crucial because we were working remotely. Overall, they’re a great team.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Lattice Studios is flexible when it comes to any unforeseen shifts in the scope. Ali’s a versatile partner who accommodates all of our demands. We liked the way he’s approached our project so far — he takes the initiative to understand our vision and platform. Everything the team builds for us is very personalized. The project as a whole is going well because of how open and down-to-earth the team is. They’re good at reassuring us and being proactive with clearing up any confusion.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They could do better with documentation of what they’ve completed along with their processes. They do provide it at the end of each step, but I’d prefer if they gave it on an ongoing basis.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be as clear as possible and define your goals. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions, and make sure you understand what you’re doing.

I’m the communications director at Yr Plans Inc. which is a company that provides employer-assisted loan repayment in the Canadian workplace.

What challenge were you trying to address with Lattice Studios?

Beginning with a landing page, we took on Lattice Studios to build an online presence for us.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They created our website for us. Now, they’re going to be helping us in rebuilding our software platform which is currently in beta.

What is the team composition?

My main point of contact was Tojo (Lead Developer & Designer, Lattice Studios) but I also know that Ali (Lead Backend Developer, Lattice Studios) was involved in the project as well.

How did you come to work with Lattice Studios?

We were actually touring their office building and were introduced to them by the manager of the coworking space. They seemed to be able to offer everything we were looking for. They were also the exact demographic that our targeted users would be, so we thought their input would be valuable.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent around $25,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working with them in July 2019, and the work is still ongoing. The website has been built, but they’re going to continue providing backend development.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Feedback for their work has been thoroughly positive. They really heard our needs and concerns and worked effectively to address them. Since their completed website was so successful, we’ve decided to retain them for the backend development work on our software offering.

How did Lattice Studios perform from a project management standpoint?

At the very beginning of our engagement, Tojo and I set out our primary methods of communication. We exchanged phone numbers for emergencies, but most of our communication was via email. We could just drop in any time, as well. On top of that, they met all of their deadlines.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They were great listeners. They really listened to our needs and understood what our specific challenges were.

No, I can’t really think of anything.

Just be prepared to give them as much information as you can. Answer all the questions they have, as well, so they can do the best job for you.

We needed a knowledgeable development team to help us build our platform.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We gave them the specifications outlining exactly what we needed, and they developed an application for iOS and Android for us. They also helped us with some React web pages. Most of the infrastructure was already designed, but Lattice Studios handled all the coding. It was a very collaborative process and they were willing to work with Firebase, sharing their knowledge with our in-house development team.

We worked with two members of their team.

They were working out of the same co-working space as we were. After we saw their portfolio, we decided to give them a chance.

Our in-house team was happy with the quality of their work. The feedback from the external stakeholders has also been very positive.

How did Lattice Studios perform from a project management standpoint?

They're a small, dynamic team and we worked side by side with them. We usually used Trello and Kanban boards to coordinate our tasks. They also had a mobile-friendly dashboard where they displayed all the information, making it easy for us to manage the project.

They're easy to work with.

Make sure your features are specified correctly. It's the responsibility of both parties to make sure there's a mutual understanding about the specifications and the features of the software.

I’m the founder of THAD, an architectural design firm that specializes in creating inspiring, functional dwellings.

For what projects/services did your company hire Lattice Studios?

I’ve only been acquiring new clients through referrals for years, and I was suffering from a lackluster website. I wanted to extend my reach to new clients and make myself more visible on Google. I wasn't able to build the website I wanted with WordPress or Squarespace, so I decided to find a development team.

What were your goals for this project?

My main goal was to extend my reach to new clients through Google. My secondary goal was to have a sleek and modern website that would showcase my previous work.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

They worked in the same office space as me. I always saw them working hard and building amazing products, so I reached out to them when I decided to build a new website. I also considered two other companies and two freelancers. While the other companies gave me a simple quote, Lattice Studios built a design prototype. They put in a lot of work for no extra charge, and I decided to go with them.

Can you go into detail about the services they provided and the scope of the project?

Lattice Studios built my website, web dashboard, and backend infrastructure using React, Gatsby, and Firebase. The site itself showcases my houses, describes my process, and allows clients to contact me, while the dashboard and backed empower me to easily add and remove projects and photos. Each house has a featured image and multiple interior shots and is labeled by type. They optimized all my images based on their size. They also did SEO and set up my technology accounts.

What was the team composition?

The team included one frontend developer and one backend developer. The backend developer was in charge of the project and kept me in the loop whenever there was a big change or if they needed something.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

I can't at the moment because I'm not ready to publish the site. 

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

They provided a project lead (the backend developer) who was in charge of communication. We shared a Trello board that kept me updated on the progress of the dashboard.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They’re constantly grinding to make a better product. Not only are they good at what they do, but they also go out of their way to improve their work. Their attention to detail is impressive. They were always coming to me with ideas on how to improve my initial thoughts. It wasn't just another project to them. They went above and beyond to build a product that would help me succeed.

Are there any areas where they can improve?

I was generally happy with everything, so I can’t think of anything.
