Crumb is a mobile app that motivates people to be more active. Users gain points for each natural movement like steps or stairs and can use these points to get special offers in our shop. I am the CEO at Crumb and also overseeing technical implementation.

We hired AMS LLC to build both our mobile apps for Android and iOS in native development Java and Swift respectively.

What were your goals for this project?

The goal of the project was to build the first MVP for our company from scratch from the designs that we'd built in a very short time to convince investors for a financial round.

We got introduced to AMS through Linkedin and their short time estimation and positive helpful attitude was the reason why we chose AMS.

Describe the project in detail.

The project was to build the mobile app for http://crumbup.com/ which is a mix of a fitness, finance and eCommerce app. It needed to

1. Connect with health data to record user steps and movement.
2. Reward users with a currency for that movement and keep a track of their balance
3. Have a shop where users can buy product offers with that currency.

We had daily meetings with AMS to discuss the best possible solution and in the end the goal was to set up

1. Backend in Firebase
2. Analytics of user behaviour from google analytics and bigQuery
3. Swift and Java for mobile app development

We provided the design in adobe XD and that was all that was required from us to give. The rest was all handled by AMS.

What was the team composition?

We were assigned a project manager, an iOS developer, an android developer and a QA and whenever the deadlines was getting tough to meet AMS even added extra developers to make sure that we reach the deadlines.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Within 9 weeks of launch we were able to get 8 thousand users and 300 ratings with an average of 4.7 stars. Almost no bugs with the app and the app looking exactly like the designs that we provided. The app is currently available in selected countries but can be found here https://apps.apple.com/de/app/crumb/id1455844646

We ended up with a beautiful product that has a less than 0.5% crash rate and has allowed us to expand in multiple countries. Also due to their experience they were even able to suggest us features that we should add in our app that would make it even better.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

We used Skype and daily standups to maintain communication. People from AMS were always available and were super quick to respond to any issues that we had. Speak great English and we almost never felt that they were working remote due to them being always available.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Their experience in mobile app development is truly remarkable. They're super fast at coming out with new features and building stable apps on technology that can scale very fast. They're also very considerate to changing needs and welcome changes in plans.

Are there any areas for improvement?

We've been overall extremely happy with AMS but more automated testing could have helped us catch bugs even faster.

Develop high-quality development solutions for our client since it was the first project of that size with them. It was crucially important to perform everything to an high level of standard to establish relationships & more referral business in the future.

From our network. They had clients in the UK that they had worked with in the past & they were referred to us as being professional developers. We started hiring process speaking with different suppliers in the region, but AMS turned out to be the best since they are highly specialized in mobile development whereas other agencies offer a whole range of various services.

They developed UI/UX & native iOS and Android versions for the app. They started with SRS for the mobile part of the project, outlining functions, designs & user stories. Then, using Scrum approach with weekly sprints, they started working on the project providing us with weekly updates of the software & were in constant communication with us by providing better approaches to develop new functions - to be honest, we were really excited by their proficiency in mobile development & the quality of the solutions they provided.

What was the team composition?

They had a project manager, native iOS Developer, native Android Developer, UI/UX designer & QA person working with us. We also had the feeling that it wasn't the first time they worked together since they were solving complex issues smoothly & we felt that the mobile part of the project was in good hands at all times.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

Well, it was awesome. Together we’ve delivered a full-stack solution on time, our client was very happy and now we are negotiating on 3 new deals of that size since we’ve proved we can deliver complex products at a high level of quality & meeting deadlines. Our business is growing and we're looking forward to future projects with them. 

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

It was impressive. After building SRS we saw a clear sprints structure for weeks to come, tasks that needed to be finished, possible blockers, estimations, etc. At each moment, we clearly knew what the guys are working on and what we would get at the end of next sprint. It was awesome, especially comparing to other agencies we’ve worked with.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Processes & mobile expertise. We really felt like we are working with professionals & don’t even need to do things from our side - no micromanagement, meeting deadlines, clean & clear development process. Mobile expertise, UI/UX & consulting skills are also on a high level - it might be hard for web developers to dive into these things, but when you have someone so experienced onboard you can really build awesome products.

Are there any areas for improvement?

There is always something to improve in any activity. Communication from the web part might be the one when working with these guys, but there were certain issues with providing an accurate API guide from our side too, so I can’t really blame anyone for that. The problem solving is definitely decent here.

The impact of this project is tremendous. The client of ours is a multiple business owner in the US and with this application done perfectly we are currently negotiating second web-based deal with 7 developers, QA person, project manager & business analyst - we are very happy we were able to build this relationship & grateful for AMS for helping us!

Project management was handled via Jira, with an experienced project manager with a technical background controlling the whole process. At each given moment during the whole development, we knew what is the task developer is working on, what kind of blockers he has & the current milestone completion.

High professionalism & expertise in native mobile development & designing, these guys really know what are they talking about and sincerely love phones & applications, we were smashed with the amount of value we got on a first consultation call with them.

We had a couple of blockers during product development, but their team was able to solve them on time with a professional problem-solving attitude. I can’t think of anything they should improve currently, our experience was flawless.
