Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

The claims portal prototype was featured at the annual launch. It will be a key platform to help the claims department to meet their goals this year.

I’m the founder of a website that helps people compare offers from several airport transfer companies and book the best offer.

For what projects/services did your company hire Netsells Group?

Our original code was Vanilla PHP. As the system grew, the code base was becoming more and more unmanageable. I decided that an MVC framework was the way forward. I liked Laravel, but realized that the project was too big to take on myself.

What were your goals for this project?

The project brief was to recreate the existing functionality while transforming the code base in to a more conventional framework. I hoped that would allow the business to scale more easily in the future.

How did you select this vendor?

I started looking for development agencies that specialized in Laravel. I found Netsells Group and contacted some of the companies listed on their profile page for references. I also read their feedback on Clutch. After meeting them in York, I didn’t consider working with anyone else.

Netsells Group began by documenting the existing system. As I developed the system myself, I frequently traveled to York to work with their team. Once they fully understood how the system worked, they were able to leverage their experience to improve processes and generally make the system run better.

I mainly work with two backend developers, a project manager, and an account manager.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

They just completed the project, but the most obvious improvement has been to page load times. The real benefits for us will be seen going forward. Having a conventional code base makes adding new features and improving the system much easier to manage.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

Their team’s project management was first class. We had weekly phone calls, a dedicated Slack channel, Git access, and regular emails. It was great knowing that good to know that they have a lot of expertise for server issues, frontend work, design, and other areas.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They’re a friendly group and come across as genuine. They really want to work with clients long term rather than just getting a project fee and moving on.

Are there any areas for improvement?

This project wasn’t completed in the estimated time or budget. However, as a developer myself, I understand that it’s not an easy thing to achieve.

Same Day Courier Network LTD (SDCN) is a transport trading exchange platform for transport operators. Members post loads they wish to have covered, and other members are alerted to each request via a tracking application. The platform also provides a full back office system for members to raise invoices for loads carried and leave feedback for each member they work with. I'm the owner of the business.

They manage all of the maintenance and hosting needs for the platform. The greatest challenge they faced was the development of the site and the app. Much of that development is ongoing.

We wanted to work with a company that specialized in the technology the original site was based on and could take us to the next level. We needed to increase the functionality of the site and dramatically improve the user experience and activity levels.

Before they took over all maintenance and development of our platform, we met with the owner and his lead project managers and developers. They got to understand the project and our needs. They had great ideas that helped us achieve our goals, and made useful suggestions that made it even better than we originally hoped.

What was the team composition?

Our main project manager keeps us fully updated about the progress of any development work. As the project grew, the team expanded to include developers and other resources to ensure we had the right experts working on our behalf.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

On the heels of the development work they did to improve all aspects of the site, we have seen a marked surge in activity on the platform, which was our principal target. We've also seen an increase in membership and app downloads, thanks to the improvements they made.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

The interaction between our team and theirs is absolutely seamless.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They went beyond simply selling their business to us to win the contract. I was particularly impressed by their belief in the project and their excitement to be a part of our process. They gave us great ideas and encouragement from our first meeting onward.

I’m the marketing manager for PixPax. We’re a new mobile photo printing app based in the UK. Customers print photos for free but pay a small delivery fee.

What challenge were you trying to address with hedgehog lab?

We wanted our app to be different from others in the mobile printing field. We needed help figuring out a unique plan for our app and developing it. Additionally, we didn't have the in-house talent for app development. Ultimately, we needed to hire someone with expertise in app development as well as a deep understanding of what we wanted to deliver.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We began the project by briefing hedgehog lab about our goals and performed discovery research together. We found our target customers and better understood how to compete against others, including pricing and presentation.

From there, we began the launch plan and created a roadmap for the design and creation stages. They started the design sprints and took the app through the entire development process. This project was for iOS development, but they are now working on the Android development.

What is the team composition?

There are around 10 members of their team, that I’m aware of, who are working on the project. I’ve spoken to an iOS developer and our project manager. We also worked with a few more internal researchers and designers during the discovery phase to better understand the project’s scope.

How did you come to work with hedgehog lab?

We searched online and used Clutch, among other sites, to do research. We wanted an agency that was driven by user experience. After engaging with multiple developers, it became clear hedgehog lab had strength in creating engaging, vibrant features. We hired them because we felt that fit our vision for the app.

We began the project with them in February 2018, and the work is still ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We have a US-based development team working on a separate project, and they were impressed with the initial testing versions of the app that we showed them. That team's expertise in the development field makes their insight valuable, so we are pleased with the UX, and high level of detail hedgehog lab has put into the app. We’re impressed by the quality of the product, too.

How did hedgehog lab perform from a project management standpoint?

For daily communication and file transfers, we use Basecamp. They’ve educated us on how to become more agile in our technology usage by working with this system.

What did you find most impressive about them?

hedgehog lab's level of investment in the project stood out to us from the onset. They take pride in making their work as consumer-centric and engaging as possible. Since the bulk of their work is service-based solutions, their team treats our project as a novel experience, as the results are things they can physically see. We appreciate the vibrancy and excitement they bring to the process.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Because we chose a company that had no previous experience with print labs, it took them slightly longer to get up to speed in those areas. However, having no direct knowledge in that field allowed them to come in with fresh eyes, which we wanted.

What challenge were you trying to address with hedgehog lab?

Water utilities is a static industry that uses long-held processes and technologies, but the local market has recently turned competitive. We started looking for ways to make ourselves stand out from the competition and offer the best possible customer experience. Our ideas included a revamped bill design among other digital solutions to customers’ needs. We also hired hedgehog lab for their in-depth knowledge of digital strategy techniques.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We started by focusing on select technologies such as Alexa Skills and customer-facing mobile applications. hedgehog lab ran workshops with customers to determine what features to add from our backlog. They helped us create a pilot program to engage with internal and senior stakeholders. They then implemented that pilot in test homes to further develop their understanding of the most valuable features. We are now in the process of developing an MVP.

Although we haven’t exploited their range of services yet, hedgehog lab has demonstrated their ability to handle the entire lifecycle of implementing a product, from design to launch to follow-up support.

What is the team composition?

I’ve worked closely with a variety of developers and team members, including Ray (Chief Design Officer, hedgehog lab), our main point of contact who helped orchestrate our project initiatives. We’ve also engaged with Sarat (CEO, hedgehog lab) who has demonstrated thought leadership and provided a great deal of insight into various industries and digital strategies.

How did you come to work with hedgehog lab?

The team is based in Newcastle—near to our company—which has become a haven for startups. We were looking to utilize local talent and develop an innovative partnership with a startup; hedgehog lab’s reputation preceded them. We engaged the team in an innovation pilot and their results after completing the design thinking and design sprint exercises impressed us.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’re still in the early stages of development on our pilot programs and other projects.  However, hedgehog lab is one of the few teams we’ve trusted to begin a formal innovation relationship with. We’ve even had Sarat and Ray sit in on our strategic executive meetings.

In this newly competitive marketplace, regulators are rewarding companies like ours that demonstrate an environment for innovative ideas; our partnership with hedgehog lab has achieved this and earned us substantial benefits as a result.

How did hedgehog lab perform from a project management standpoint?

As a more established business, we tend to have internal project management policies for outside vendors. However, in light of highly innovative and risk-taking work we’re doing, we’ve been less strict in our governance. hedgehog lab still keeps itself accountable by doing quarterly reviews to measure what the relationship has delivered so far and where it can improve. The team has demonstrated great flexibility and provided thought leadership, which was exactly what we were looking for.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They really put people first. Through their reputation and the partnership they built with us, they were able to convince members of our organization that they were the right partner to solve our problems. They demonstrated knowledge of our industry as well as insight into the digital world that lend to innovative solutions. Now we feel like they’re a part of the team and we’re happy to bring them in for future challenges.

Are there any areas they could improve?

While we have many ideas for potential projects, we don’t have the resources to institute all of them. We’re now working on a mechanism to ensure that we better focus our efforts on the highest value activities.

I'm chairman and CEO of a health care business. We provide pharmacy services to medical clinics, particularly in the cosmetic medical arena.

We wanted to develop a cutting-edge mobile application to disrupt some space in our market.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They’re developing the app from scratch. We're in the middle of the development right now. I can't say too much about it because of its status as intellectual property.

We kicked off the engagement by giving them a presentation about what we wanted to achieve. They came back to us with a proposal. Then we spent a month of getting to know each other, followed by formally agreeing on a timeline and project management plan. They’re developing the app for iOS first. They will eventually develop it for Android as well.

What is the team composition?

In total, there are about 15 people assigned to the project. We mainly deal with four people: one project manager, one designer, one software developer, and an account lead.

How did you come to work with hedgehog lab?

One of our staff worked with them in the past and we had heard good things about them. We interviewed several companies, and ultimately decided to go with hedgehog lab.

How much have you invested with them?

We've committed to spend about $700,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in March 2018 and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They’re always on time, which is the most important thing at this stage. We've been extremely happy with the development of some aspects of the app. It's quite a complex platform, so there have been some issues. They've dealt with those challenges in an innovative way. We won't be launching until October, so only our internal experts have looked at it to date. We're quite happy.  

How did hedgehog lab perform from a project management standpoint?

The project has specific deliverables and they’ve hit all the targets. We agreed to a project plan where we pay them for work done at certain points, so we track the project to the contract. Our account lead is great at keeping the relationship going. Everything is falling into place nicely.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They come to us with ideas, and that's unusual. With other companies on previous projects, it was like pulling teeth to get them to make suggestions. hedgehog lab’s ideas are valid, clever, and functional.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Time will tell. We haven't launched yet, but we've been pleased so far.

Any advice for potential customers?

Make sure that you designate members of your team to work with them. Successful projects don't happen without a deep team. You need to have people on both sides who are responsible for keeping the project on track.

We needed help producing an augmented reality visualization and VR fly through for our modular home development.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We had quite a tight deadline, so we gave hedgehog lab specific requests and requirements. We knew exactly what we wanted to showcase in the augmented reality, so our architect provided hedgehog lab with the files necessary to execute the work. They developed it to work on an iPad, which we then put into a museum.

One of my colleagues met them at an event and began talking about their services. When we began looking for a partner, we interviewed a few different agencies, but hedgehog lab had the best cost and proposal, so we hired them.

Our account manager made sure everything was on track and accounted for. She answered any questions we had and stuck to our short deadline. We mainly communicated via email.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’ve worked with other vendors before, and hedgehog lab was one of the best partners we’ve had. They’re a creative team, but our requirements were pretty restrictive because of the deadline, and they were okay with that.

Have them contribute to the creative component of your project. They have a lot of good insight and can make your product a lot better.

I’m the head of IT development for a financial services firm. We offer contractor difference trading to retail investors.

What challenge were you trying to address with hedgehog lab?

We’d been building a mobile app platform for about eight years. During that process, we’ve attempted to form a robust in-house development team that could handle the challenge. After struggling to find talented app developers to hire full-time, we decided to outsource some of the work.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

hedgehog lab supplements our existing team to develop new features for our trading platform’s iOS and Android apps. They’re also integral to the development of our JavaScript-based web app. We’re currently focusing our efforts on improving the platform’s UX and implementing the changes.

They’re essentially an extension of our team as they join our daily processes, stand-ups, and workshops. Despite working from a different location, they approach each task with the same development strategy as our in-house team. We have a strict developer screening process and hedgehog lab was responsive to that. We interviewed the candidates remotely and had them perform some technical tests to assess their expertise. One developer initially assigned to the project turned out to be underqualified for the kind of work we needed. hedgehog lab quickly rectified the issue by assigning a new resource.

We interacted with the CEO initially and throughout the process. They allocated four resources including two mobile app developers and two JavaScript developers.

I found them by researching mobile app development companies. The testimonies on their website were compelling, so I met with their CEO. There wasn’t a strong sales pitch. Instead, they let us decide in our own time and weren’t too pushy about it. Their low turnover rate stood out to us as an admirable quality as they have staff that has worked there for 10 years. They were also adamant that we visit their offices and see how the team operates. This demonstrates a positive company culture that’s similar to what we’re trying to cultivate within our organization. As a result, we decided to hire them.

They function as four resources in a team of 20, so it’s difficult to pinpoint a specific success. However, they produce high-quality work and are always professional. They work collaboratively and enthusiastically accept new challenges. For example, they take responsibility for bugs and frequently fix issues that weren’t caused by their efforts.

How did hedgehog lab perform from a project management standpoint?

One of the teams that work with us isn’t assigned any project management responsibilities because they attend our daily stand-ups. However, we have another project with them that suffers due to ineffective management. This includes a failure to deliver weekly reports on time. That doesn’t always happen, but it’s been a reoccurring issue that we’ve found frustrating. We use Jira as a communication tool.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their employees are super engaged and clearly enjoy working for hedgehog lab. They support their staff with time-off to learn additional skills. In fact, three of the resources assigned to us only work four days a week. They take the other day to train with new technologies. This will ultimately benefit us as we’ll have access to a more versatile team.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I’d like to see more discipline in the area of communication and project management. Other than that, everything has been excellent. We’re happy with the relationship.

I am a co-founder of a smartphone application that allows users to search for and find restaurants in London.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with hedgehog lab?

We were looking for an agency that could provide both app development and consultancy services to ensure that our business would grow with the best foot forward.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We started off with a transparent discovery session organized and hosted by hedgehog lab. We had a thorough and open discussion about what we were looking to achieve, and were able to brainstorm various approaches prior to development. The conversations around strategy were with a product owner and a partner, who maintained communication between the development team and ourselves. They gave us their marketing ideas and break-downs of what they felt was the best approach to promoting the product.

hedgehog lab went on to build a native mobile application for iOS and Android, along with a web database and CRM portal for managing the marketplace. They also had a strong design team that assisted with branding and built the UX/UI accordingly.

The app provides discounts to users at participating restaurants, which they can redeem by paying through the app. There is no need to subscribe to a membership, present a voucher or coupon, or undertake any form of pay-to-save method. Users can pay through our app and have the discount automatically applied to any restaurants/cafés that have signed up with the platform. The tool enables users to find these restaurants and enables restaurants to display special offers and showcase their business. When the two come together, another feature within the app can create bills and accept payments seamlessly.

What is the team composition?

We worked with different members of the team throughout the course of the project but had three key contacts: the project manager, the product owner, and the lead developer for both platforms and the web app. We also worked with iOS and Android specialists as required.

How did you come to work with hedgehog lab?

We found them on Clutch after searching the typical terms related to development teams. Being based in London, we had plenty of options, but we decided to rely on an industry-standard benchmark. We went through reviews, conducted research on past work, and created a shortlist for face-to-face meetings. hedgehog lab understood and appreciated how we wanted to run the collaboration. We wanted more than just a one-off development group; we were looking for a partnership that could work with us as if they were an extension of our team. We had the key members of their business development team come to London, and we had a great meeting on how their expertise could support our business goals.

hedgehog lab was the highest-rated U.K.-based development firm at the time, and one of the highest in Europe. They also charged one of the highest fees on our shortlist, but we were clear on how we valued the relationship. If the quality was worth the money, then we would prefer it to using a cheaper agency.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with hedgehog lab in November 2016. The app was launched one year later, in November 2017. We are in discussions about adding more work.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They were much more involved in the project than we expected, and put a lot of time and effort into creating a comprehensive and cohesive brand. We’ve only been live for a few months, so it’s difficult to provide any data yet. We’ve received significant positive user feedback on the design, functionality, and usability of the app, mostly focusing on its polished look and feel.

We have explored multiple ways of getting feedback on the app’s layout, but haven’t necessarily done so for the code beyond initial impressions from our internal team, which have been positive. In terms of error rate, we’ve only had one crash on iOS, which is impressive considering the number of downloads we’ve had. We are slightly behind schedule on Android, and there are a few bugs here and there. hedgehog lab doesn’t like to release products with serious bugs, and will often work outside of normal office hours to make sure everything is fixed before releasing.

Our general ability to see what bugs are prevalent is minimal, given that hedgehog lab has done everything they can to stop them from being released. When issues did come up, they were minute oversights like a formatting, using an inconsistent font, etc.

How did hedgehog lab perform from a project management standpoint?

Everything was built through an Agile process. At the beginning of each sprint, we were told who would be working with us, what their roles and responsibilities were, and what the deliverables were supposed to be. The scrum master/project manager kept everything in check, ensuring that we were informed of any delays, or if there were any starting issues for specific team members. We were always given notice when there was an unexpected change in development like bugs that took longer to fix.

Besides email and telephone calls, we’ve often communicated via online boards like Jira Service Desk. These allow us to log bugs, reports, concerns and change requests. We have a team in the U.K. and one internationally for monitoring this 24/7. We also use Basecamp as a day-to-day management portal. Everyone has access to certain projects and discussions. We’re able to upload and share screenshots, daily recordings, and discuss the project collaboratively. We have a product owner and a client partner with whom we can check in at any time.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The most impressive thing about hedgehog lab is their unity. There is a comforting feeling that the product—our blood, sweat, and tears in terms of money invested—is in the hands of a team of people who are well-connected. They all know each other, work well together and don’t view us as just another client. We feel like a part of their team, and there’s a lot of passion in what hedgehog lab does. This is evidenced by simple things like replying to emails during weekends and getting involved in social media. They’re driven by what we’re trying to achieve, and this comes across in everything they say and do.

Not only did they understand our end-goal as a client, but worked with us towards that end-goal like they were a part of our internal team. This started what became a strong working relationship where—unlike with other service providers we’d used in the past, who said yes to everything we asked for, but didn’t bring any meaningful input outside of cost and duration—they challenged and optimized everything we put forth. They became an ad-hoc part of our team, and we worked with them as our own developers, rather than as an agency we were retaining. I’ve gotten the impression that hedgehog lab is one of us—they take on anything that impacts or damages us, our product, our brand, or our user as a priority.

Are there any areas they could improve?

When it comes to testing and QA, they have a separate division for the task. This is not a massive issue, but we’ve found that the testing team is overseeing multiple products at the same time, and doesn’t have the same level of knowledge of the product. This means that following a 48-hour QA session, there may still be issues and bugs that weren’t found. We’ve discussed this with them, and they agreed to spend less time on QA with the universal team, and more time with the individuals who know the product back-to-front.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

If the client is willing to put in extra time for testing—which would normally be assigned to the QA team—the overall result will be higher-quality testing on an expedited timeline. This is not a criticism in itself, and it ends up being a bit of a positive in hedgehog lab’s case. They were willing and able to negotiate changes in internal processes to prioritize the best interests of the client.

I'm the Co-Founder of a website called MyLocumManager. We’re a SaaS site that provides invoicing and administrative assistance to doctors in the U.K.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Users find our site highly intuitive, which was a big priority for me. General feedback shows that our site is more user-friendly and visually appealing than our competitors.

How did Netsells perform from a project management standpoint?

I’ve been massively impressed by Al’s work. I can reach him anytime and they’re highly responsive. If we have an issue with the site, they respond immediately, and I always get a response to less urgent questions within 24 hours.

While we've experimented with project management tools, most of our communication is done over phone and email.

What did you find most impressive about them?

In terms of frontend development, they're ahead of the competition. They take time to understand my priorities and offer feedback on how to best accomplish those goals.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They’ve been a great partner, so not really. As with any developer, it can be unnerving to pay an hourly rate without a clear understanding of what you’re paying for, but that’s the nature of a project like this.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Get them on board as soon possible. I tried to outline the entire project before hiring a developer, but Netsells’ expertise helped me realize the site’s full potential.
