I’m the CEO of Coinbox, a fintech company that helps the average Kenyan pay for things in bits. We call it Coinbox because users can save coins to own high-quality products. When prominent brands come to Kenya, they can only sell to high-end people. We’re attempting to bring such brands to the lower-middle class, enabling consumers to own a bit more. Simply put, our company aims to bring brands closer to the masses.

What challenge were you trying to address with Graph Technologies?
We hired Graph to help develop a mobile app.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
Graph developed a mobile app that was integrated with M-Pesa payments, a mobile money transfer company popular in our country. The team also helped us raise capital and pitch to investors. We provided them with our idea and showed them how we wanted it to work. Their resources took that idea in raw form and developed it into an app. Meanwhile, our team decided to publish the app on Google Play since 97% of the Kenyan population were Android users.
What is the team composition?
I worked with two people from Graph. One of them was the main developer, and one person was helping him. A large team worked together behind them.
How did you come to work with Graph Technologies?
We found Graph through a local innovation event in Kenya; we were directed to them by someone who’d worked with their team before. Their pricing was fair, and more importantly, they were engaging. Our team didn’t know much about technology, but they were excited about what we were doing. They also wanted to work with startups. That was the start of our partnership.
How much have you invested with them?
We spent between $2,500–$3,000 on the entire project.

Our engagement lasted from August 2020–January 2022.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We measured success based on how well we performed in the startup space and understood our product. Simply put, we learned a lot about the startup ecosystem. Graph also gave plenty of suggestions for ways we could grow our brand.
How did Graph Technologies perform from a project management standpoint?
Graph was better at communicating with us than meeting deadlines; we had some delays here and there. However, this usually happened when dealing with technological products. We never had huge issues because they always kept us in the loop and informed us of the reasons they were late. In terms of tools, Graph used Jira and Bitrix to manage the project. We mainly used WhatsApp and regular phone calls to communicate.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They had great technological knowledge — they could solve hard problems. In fact, they helped us explore avenues we didn’t even think about at first.
Are there any areas they could improve?
They could’ve added more people to the project. Only two engineers worked with us — more would have been better.
