I’m the co-owner of BIM4U, a South African consultancy that advances the AEC industry by providing tailored Building Information Modeling (BIM) solutions, including product modeling, a specifications library, and a platform for hosting and distributing design files.

What challenge were you trying to address with Geeklab?

We brought Geeklab in to build the BIM4U website as the public-facing home for our clients’ BIM content. The goal was a product-catalogue site where architects and engineers could find a manufacturer’s range and download the BIM files (Revit, IFC, DWG) quickly and reliably, with each manufacturer’s content presented under their own brand.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Geeklab has built our platform that distributes our BIM models and specifications, which are produced in-house by BIM4U and our design partners. The main deliverables include designing and building the website on WordPress and WooCommerce, structured as a product catalogue where each manufacturer has its own branded section and each range is a product with its downloadable BIM files attached.Geeklab has also created the download mechanism for BIM files, including the bulk upload process that lets us load new manufacturer ranges from a spreadsheet rather than one product at a time. The team has set up hosting, domain, and security and provided ongoing maintenance and support. As our service has grown, Geeklab has made follow-on enhancements, including removing the checkout so files download directly and adding enquiry and HUB-access forms.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The biggest outcome is that our website has become the backbone of how we deliver. Over the three years since launch, we’ve gone from no clients to close to 23 manufacturers, and every one of them is onboarded onto the platform Geeklab built — it’s now a standard part of what we sell rather than a nice-to-have. The site has scaled with us without needing to be rebuilt: new manufacturer ranges can be loaded in bulk rather than one product at a time, which has let a very small team keep a large catalogue live and current.

Architects and engineers can find a product and have the BIM files in hand in a couple of clicks, which is exactly what the business needed. As our model has changed, Geeklab has kept pace — most recently reworking the download flow and adding enquiry forms quickly and without disruption. For a business our size, having a platform we don’t have to worry about is the result that matters most.

Some numbers that show the platform working: the library now covers 20 manufacturer brands and around 80 product ranges, across roughly 120 categories and thousands of individual Revit and IFC objects — all loaded and maintained by a very small team, which is only workable because the site was built to take whole ranges in bulk rather than one product at a time. A new manufacturer’s full range can typically go from upload sheet to live on the site in a single session. Our client base has grown from zero to close to 23 manufacturers in three years, and the platform has absorbed that growth without needing to be rebuilt.

How did Geeklab perform from a project management standpoint?

Project management is straightforward and easy to deal with. Communication has been direct — we talk through what’s needed, they come back with options and a timeline, and then they get on with it. When we needed the checkout removal and direct-download rebuild done quickly, Geeklab offered a rush option and delivered on it. There’s been no handholding required on our side, which for a small business is exactly what we want from a development partner. Yes, they deliver on time.We communicate through in-person meetings, virtual meetings, and emails or messaging apps.

What did you find most impressive about them?

What stands out is how quickly Geeklab understands a fairly niche business. BIM content distribution isn’t a normal e-commerce problem — the “products” are Revit and IFC files, the buyers are architects who aren’t paying, and the people we’re really serving are the manufacturers behind the content. Geeklab gets that distinction early and builds the site around it rather than forcing it into a standard shop template.Another impressive thing is their flexibility: as our service model has evolved, they’ve adapted the platform with us instead of treating the original build as finished. It feels less like a vendor and more like a team that’s invested in where BIM4U is going.

Geeklab started in 2012 as a small web studio in Somerset West and has grown into a full-service digital agency working with clients across South Africa and Europe. Our approach is simple: senior specialists lead every engagement, AI tooling accelerates the delivery, and each project is scoped around an outcome the client can measure. We would rather be a long-term partner than a one-off vendor, and many of our clients have been with us for years.

Founder and Director of Geeklab. Jared leads strategy and delivery across web, brand and marketing engagements, and drives the agency's AI-accelerated way of working. He is the first point of contact for new clients.

Every new client goes through the same structured onboarding. It starts with a discovery session where we map your goals, audience, competitors and the outcome the project needs to deliver. From there we collect brand assets, access and content through our online onboarding portal, agree a scope and timeline in writing, and assign a single point of contact who stays with you for the life of the engagement. Most clients are fully onboarded and in production within one to two weeks of signing.

Yes. We work with clients in both South Africa and the European Union, so we build to POPIA and GDPR as standard: consent-based cookie and analytics setups, privacy policies and data processing terms, secure form handling, and hosting choices that keep data in the appropriate region. For clients in regulated sectors such as finance and healthcare, we work to their compliance requirements and can sign the relevant data processing agreements.

You get one named point of contact, a shared project board in Monday.com where you can see status at any time, and a scheduled update at least once a week during active projects, whether or not there is a milestone to report. We work over email, Slack, Google Meet or Teams, whichever suits your team. Retainer clients receive a monthly report that ties the work done to the numbers it was meant to move, with time logged against each task so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Before we start, we agree the one or two numbers the project exists to move: qualified enquiries, online sales, course sign-ups, organic traffic, cost per lead. We set up tracking (GA4, conversion events, call and form tracking) so those numbers are measured from day one, and we report against them rather than against activity. If the work is not moving the number, we change the work.
