We have multiple ongoing development projects that DRC supports us with. One project, we developed a custom web application for users in the construction industry that allows them to create complex quotes and project plans.

Our metrics for success include: Time: Can we outsource our development work and allow our other team members more time to focus on other aspects of the business? Success: Can we successfully build the solutions that our customers are asking for? Quality: Can we build said solutions in a quality way, with little errors or bugs?

Working with the DRC team is great. Our workflow includes the following: We communicate with our DRC development team over Slack. They're extremely responsive and wonderful to communicate with. They are always open to new ideas, as well as providing ideas of their own. Projects are managed in Asana. Developers are assigned tasks on the project and provide nightly updates. Depending on the project, code is pushed to a repo and reviewed. There has been little issue with timeframe. When time is an issue, it is presented early enough to make accommodations and properly set expectations.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I enjoy working with the team from DRC because they feel like a part of the team and not an outsourced contractor. They care about their work and really put in the effort to make it a success. They are extremely competent in their craft and, when they run into issues, they don't hide it. We really feel confident in our projects

Are there any areas for improvement or something DRC Systems India Limited could have done differently?

Like any outsourced developer, you don't have complete control over your assigned developer and their skill level may not be up to your project's needs. That said, your project manager at DRC will fall over themselves to support you and find someone else.

I am the owner of a company in Germany. My company creates and operates Internet pages on different topics.

What challenge were you trying to address with DRC Systems?

The challenge was to create a community website for private and business members. DRC Systems was supposed to develop this website.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The project scope was to design develop and create a database that included a central user profile, user rights, and various other data points. There were many areas to that needed to be programmed, and the overall functionality was ambitious. The implementation was to be carried out on the TYPO3 content management system.

How did you come to work with DRC Systems?

I had written to several companies. Many of them did not answer, and others had bad references. DRC Systems had a large reference site. Furthermore, DRC Systems said that they were specialized in TYPO3.

How much have you invested with DRC Systems?

Between $20,000 and $50,000 was the initial amount planned.

What is the status of this engagement?

DRC Systems received a detailed list of functions that was more than 180 pages long. On this basis, they created the offer and the scheduling. The project started in 2011 and should have been completed by the end of 2011. DRC Systems calculated that it would take 230 days – about seven months. As of now [March 2017], the project has not been completed. In 2014, I gave the order for an extension. DRC Systems never started with it. A reimbursement for the extension was agreed upon but has not yet been delivered. Several reminders to them have not helped. DRC Systems has not paid as of today.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

The project is not finished, although they have been working on it for more than five years. The extension never started, and DRC Systems has not paid my money for that back.

Their communication is very bad, and their understanding of technical details is also very bad. To support the project, I have provided them more than 60 e-mails, complete with screens and descriptions. However, even the function of simple things has always been questioned. Descriptions have mostly not been read. The correction of individual functions was not an isolated case. For some small functions, I had to write up to four times by email.

A penalty was agreed to in our contract, but DRC Systems has not paid this. The contract has simply been ignored by their management. The purchase price has not been refunded.

In time, there were different contacts. On specific questions, the developer just does not answer. If a developer does not know what to do, that person simply writes "Done." I wrote after them "Not done." Then, the reaction of the developer was written as "Not understood." Then, I would write a more detailed description, usually to no avail.

Results are not tested by the developers or the project manager. Project managers often have no idea what is going on. They say things are done, even though an error is displayed on the test server.

In conclusion, I have no project and no repayment from DRC Systems. I went into this thinking I would save money because I was using an Indian developer, but this has not been true. Instead, I have received bad communication and poor quality work. Never again, DRC Systems.

How did DRC Systems perform from a project management standpoint?

The management for my project had no solution. The support for my project was bad. I have the name for a project manager, but my impression is that person does nothing on the project. The management accepts orders but does not care about the completion. It seems to be a problem with the developer.

What did you find most impressive about DRC Systems?

If anything, it was just very simple things.

Are there any areas DRC Systems could improve?

I think there is much to improve. This includes the technical understanding of the developers, the English skills of the employees, and that management must take care of the projects and have real project managers to fulfill the tasks.

I am the Creative Director of the company.

What business challenge were you trying to address with DRC Systems?

We had been working with a previous developer in order to rebrand our website. It was an old and antiquated page. There were certain designs and functionalities which we expected to achieve, but that group was not able to meet deadlines and deliver on a weekly or monthly basis. Our internal project manager eventually brought DRC Systems onboard.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in greater detail.

DRC Systems started delivering pages of the website within two weeks. They had been already built, but built incorrectly. They re-worked code and launched the whole platform, saving our project.

There was no eCommerce involved in their effort, but they did make sure that search optimization was in place, also incorporating the site within Google Analytics.

They acted as a partner in creating ideas for certain sections, and in just coming up with a better end-user delivery. Overall, they've been a great technology partner for us.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

The total development cost was between $50,000-60,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

They took over the project in late-summer of 2015 and delivered a working website within two months.

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

Working in travel retail involves many operations, so we have not gauged the site's analytics yet. Based on our partners' reactions though, and on those of our site users, the results have been great.

How did DRC Systems perform from a project management standpoint?

They're very professional overall. We have weekly meetings in which we review the backend development which is continually worked-on for us. Two or three members of their team will be by our side, illustrating what is going on and providing technology suggestions. They've given us a lot of insight in terms of what the best end-user experience would be.

What distinguishes DRC Systems from other providers?

They deliver without excuse. There might be miscommunications, but they usually reside on our part, stemming from us being unclear about what DRC Systems can deliver.

Is there anything DRC Systems could have improved or done differently?

Some of the team members don’t have the best command of the English language.

We offer a logistical management system. Our company is centered on two verticals: on one side we serve classic customers who want to use a service provider for a relocation. When moving from one location to another, customers don't have the option of searching for available service providers by price. Instead, they need to search for a local company, receive a non-binding offer, thus only getting one price. We offer reviews, ratings, and prices for different companies. Using this service, a provider can be found in less than 10 minutes.

Our other vertical entails a complete resource system for service providers, through which companies can list their vehicle capacity and accept orders. They receive orders, offers, and billing automatically through our system. The platform will decide which employee and which truck needs to be used for a relocation.

Our system is similar to finding a hotel online: prices and venues are evaluated in order to make a decision. There was no such option on the market previously for transport services. We created our startup two years ago.

DRC Systems provided complete web backend development for our platform. They created the whole structure of our platform, including databases. On the frontend, they interfaced with our designer. The communication to the designer came not only from my side, but also from DRC Systems.

How did you come to work with DRC Systems?

I worked for Rolls Royce and BMW in Germany. Some colleagues told me about DRC Systems. I had a first contact with their company, told them what I needed to do, and their response was fantastic. The first contact was also our first contract.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

The total development cost is estimated to be $75,000-90,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in August of 2014. The project is ongoing. There have been many changes in its functionality. It's much more complex than we had initially thought. We expect to finish the work in August of 2016.

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

Throughout the project, we've identified a number of defects. They've all been part of the development process. Functionalities in the platform first needed to be created at a minimal level and then optimized. After this, everything is put together. Whatever has been left out or is non-functional needs to be addressed. The process is started again and again. We employed an Agile development approach. It made sense for our project to work in this way.

How did DRC Systems perform from a project management standpoint?

I work every day with DRC Systems. Today is a public holiday in Germany, for example, but this wasn't a problem. I can still contact them on Skype and receive a response within a minute.

What distinguishes DRC Systems from other providers?

In Germany, after creating a specification, the development partner will normally create exactly what was specified. Then, the client will have to pay for change requests. The whole project budget will rise higher and higher. It's impossible to specify 100% of a product's specifications. At most, a client can give a 50% accurate description. The best point about DRC Systems is that they do not charge for document change requests. This project would have cost me $350-450,000 if I had built it in Germany.

Is there anything DRC Systems could have improved or done differently?

They don't have a strong background in strategic IT consulting. We work with multi-resource planning, an area in which not many companies will have experience. It's not the fault of DRC Systems; we're simply an atypical business. It was the first time that their team had ever heard about multi-resource scheduling. They've adapted to the requirements and we've received a very good product. Our platform features a planning board, automatic capacity, and so on. It would have been better for me to receive more strategic consulting from my partner though.
