Time estimation. The estimated dates were not extremely correct. I could not meet the deadline I set for the launch. But this is also due to a few added features that were not mentioned in the initial statement of work.

Devstree was helping us to automate the inventory process to reduce inventory loss for one of our hotel customers.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Devstree helped us develop an app that checks out pool towels to guests. The app scans the product and uploads it to the cloud to know which guest is taking the towels back to their room.

They basically built two apps that work together. The first app collects information about the user, and the second app is a utility backend. So one is for guests, and it’s for Android and iOS, and the other is for the property and just for Android.

To jumpstart the project, we provided an outline of what we wanted and some graphic examples of how we wanted the interface to look. Then, they put it all together in a timely manner.

A few people were assigned to work with us. Overall, we had an account manager and an app developer.

We’d developed the first half about a year and a half ago, and then we just went back to do the second half with them.

We needed a React Native app so that we could leverage the use of web technology that we already work with and provide that to iOS and Android. This way, integration and ongoing maintenance is as simple as possible.

We found them on a popular outsourcing website and were impressed by the reviews and the costings. Communication has been fast and high quality.

We provided documented specifications and the team had built the app based on those. We shared a Slack channel for ad hoc questions and discussions and we received updates on progress. We had a frontend design component to the app where our designer provided materials to the team to develop. We also had an integration component to our payment partner which required an understanding of the third party's SDK.

Finally, we had to develop our own APIs from our web platform, which the team had integrated into the app. Regarding QA and test, we would provide documented issues and the team would revert back quite quickly with updated builds for us to verify the changes.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

In terms of efficacy, they were spot on. They were able to deliver on every detail in the business outline in terms of functionality. Due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to put the breaks on the rollout. However, given how much I loved the first product I decided to work with Devstree IT Services Pvt. Ltd. again on a second app.

How did Devstree IT Services Pvt. Ltd. perform from a project management standpoint?

Devstree IT Services Pvt. Ltd. always met deadlines, and often finished a week or two prior to the deadline. Our teams communicated via video conferencing on WhatsApp.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their team is honest and trustworthy, they keep their word. This made for a very pleasant experience. They are head and shoulders above anyone in their areas. Their level of professionalism is beyond belief.

No, they were consummate professionals.

Be sure to dot all your i’s and cross all your t’s before engaging with them. The more information you have prepared in advance, the better the product will be.

They seemed like the best fit for the job. The listing on the UpWork website had good reviews and they had relevant experience for the project.

I provided a basic idea of what the app should look like and the guys at Devstree started on design straight away. They provided timely updates on progress and we had a mock-up design within, I think, a week of starting.

The design progressed smoothly through the project, from app flow to actual functionality. They were flexible in their approach to things that I needed to supply and I got ample notification ahead of time when I needed to contribute to the project. We are now in the final stages of testing and ironing out bugs.

I had been mainly communicating with the project manager/customer liaison at the start of the project. Towards the middle of the project, I was working closely with the engineer (which suits me well, given my background). I was aware that there was a network/back end design engineer working in the background.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The app is nearing completion. We still have a couple of bugs to resolve, but the team is very responsive to feedback, cooperative, and flexible. I have no doubt that, by the time I have content created, we will have a functional and aesthetically pleasing application to release into the world. I'm exceptionally pleased with the outcomes of this project.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

I found the team very easy to work with, despite the time differences we had to contend with through the project. Communication around budget and timeline was clear from the outset.

We worked through Skype and that worked out really well. We were able to share documents, graphics, and screenshots. I was given plenty of time to deal with the things that needed to happen from my end and the team found a way to be flexible by using their own resources when I encountered delays.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

I was very impressed with the professionalism with which business was conducted, their flexibility and ability to take feedback on board, while still sense-checking my suggestions for design and challenging my thinking where needed.

The speed with which these guys work is impressive. I have managed software developers before and found these guys to be amazingly fast while the quality did not suffer.

Are there any areas for improvement?

I think they are doing a fantastic job and we will finish with a great app that I'll be proud to share with my clients and the larger community. My personal feeling is that we could have probably slowed down a bit in places to troubleshoot a couple of persistent issues that presented. Sometimes going slower results in faster progress. But that is a question of style and we all have a different way of troubleshooting.

I am the director and co-founder of my company, Fingertips Technologies. We are a mobile lifestyle application company that aims to provide our app users with convenient information at their fingertips to empower them to go exploring.

We had to develop iOS and Android mobile applications, as well as a backend tool for the master admin and our merchants. We initially hired another develop to develop these but they were unable to deliver on a few of our core functionalities so we turned to Devstree to take over the project.

What were your goals for this project?

Our app is location-based, utilising geofencing technology to allow users to find out what's happening near them. Checking in at locations will also allow users to receive instant highlights and flash sale information posted by merchants using the merchant backend tool. This necessitated a multi-layer linkage system, eg. in the general neighbourhood area, there are malls, events and attractions, and inside them, retail shops.

How did you select Devstree IT Services Pvt. Ltd.?

We considered many companies, and eventually selected Devstree because they have a local representative that we could communicate to easily, and because the cost was reasonable and all rights to the source codes will belong to us. They were also able to execute and implement our desired app functions that our initial developers were unable to.

Our iOS and Android are native apps, of which the content of the app is controllable by the backend that has role-based access (master admin and merchants). This meant that 4 programming languages were involved: XCode Swift, Java, PHP and Angular JS. The devstree developers were well skilled in all the aforementioned programming languages, and supported us in implementing our desired app features.

What was the team composition?

We were assigned two project managers, one local, and one from India overlooking the progress of our app and web developments. There were also many other developers involved, including one for iOS, one for Android and two for the backend.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

At the time of this review, we just published our app on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, so we don't have much metrics to share. That said, the final app and backend are free of any major bugs and flaws, and we are going to be continuing to work with Devstree to implement some improved look and feel etc.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

We communicated regularly with our developers via Whatsapp and Skype. Although offshore (we are in Singapore and Devstree developers in India), we did not really face any language barriers or time difference.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

The developers are very skilled in what they do, and they are able to quickly implement our desired features - this is an especially pleasant surprise considering our experience with our previous developer who relied heavily on templates in their coding.

Are there any areas for improvement?

The project took longer than expected to complete. Perhaps the process could have been quickened if there is a more stringent QA stage. That said however, delays were inevitable due to the pandemic situation.
