I'm the general manager for Volley Media. We've developed a platform that enables users to share live streams in real time either in person or from remote locations. 

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with DevelopmentNow?

We had a business need based on direct client feedback to develop a standalone version of our mobile app that could be embedded into third-party apps, so users wouldn't have to download another app.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

DevelopmentNow looked at the use case of our current native app and built a fully featured web platform from scratch, using JavaScript. We provided the original art from the app, and their team helped identify the requirements for building the platform. 

What is the team composition? 

We worked primarily with one developer, as well as an account manager and the CTO.

How did you come to work with DevelopmentNow?

We researched different vendors with extensive development experience on Clutch and talked to a few firms based on recommendations within the community before ultimately choosing to work with DevelopmentNow. 

How much have you invested with them?

We initially budgeted for $100,000, but the project came in significantly under budget because we were able to complete it in fewer sprints than expected. We hope to reuse some of the budget allocations to do additional enhancements on the platform in the near future. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We completed the project in four sprints over the course of just six days between September and October 2018, launching the platform in November 2018.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The embedded app DevelopmentNow created is a game changer for us from a business standpoint. It helped eliminate a barrier between us and some of our larger clients, opening up doors in the marketplace that weren't previously available to us. 

How did DevelopmentNow perform from a project management standpoint?

They were great to work with, completing the project quickly and under our original budget. They had a very streamlined process and were able to deliver exactly what we needed without any drama–it felt like a genuine partnership.

What did you find most impressive about them?

It didn't feel like we were working with an agency, but rather with an extension of our own team. They were very receptive to our needs and on board with the project from day one more so than other firms we considered. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, not really. They did a great job and we look forward to working with them on the next phase of the project. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Don't micromanage their team; give them all the assets they need and let them do what they do best.

I’m one of the owners of Fifth Gear Technologies. We create software for the countertop industry.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with DevelopmentNow?

We were looking for a partner to help us develop a barcode and labeling system for tracking parts in the countertop area. We engaged with DevelopmentNow to develop and continue improving the software on an ongoing basis.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They went through an elaborate discovery process in the beginning, establishing the scope and the cost. That involved on-site meetings at our offices. Ben (CEO, DevelopmentNow) was diligent about ensuring that there were no misunderstandings about what the software would and wouldn’t do. We had a laundry list of 10 items and ended up choosing five for the first version.

The solution is intended for tracking countertops and parts through the process. There are two parts to the solution: an app and a website. It was built so that businesses could use the software easily; it has an API that integrates with their products. DevelopmentNow built it so that it would have a clean and smooth transition with what businesses were already using. They also integrated images into the software, so that they could capture those images using a snipping app—it captures architectural drawings and images and integrates them into the software.

What is the team composition?

We had direct communication with the developers. They had project management that oversaw the work, but they kept out of the way in terms of allowing the development to occur quickly.

How did you come to work with DevelopmentNow?

I knew that we wanted to work with a partner from Portland, Oregon, so that we could meet with them face-to-face. I went online and found Clutch, which had a number of reviews for them from past clients. I read those and got a feel for them, and also looked at their work. I liked the type of work they’d done; they had good UI as well as development work. They weren’t just software developers; they were familiar with apps and with making things look good, not just work well.

How much have you invested with them?

The first version of the product cost $50,000–$75,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with DevelopmentNow in December 2017. The first version of the software was delivered in April or May 2018.

We finished our first development earlier this year, then went live with it. We continue to work with them on a weekly basis to improve our software.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We have around 40 customers who are using the software and they love it. It’s reduced the error rate during production by 25–30%.

How did DevelopmentNow perform from a project management standpoint?

There was a lot of back-and-forth throughout; they didn’t just disappear to work on the product. They were transparent about what they were doing. They introduced us to Slack, which is a powerful tool; it allows us to see what they’re doing, give feedback in real-time, and test the product.

For our needs, they were great. They used Jira, which allowed us visibility over everything they were developing. We could see their status and what they were working on at all times. We expressed early on that we wanted to move quickly and get feedback, and they were responsive to making changes. Nothing got lost in translation.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The people working there are extremely intelligent and capable. They’re big enough to handle large projects, but small enough to be flexible, have good communication, and eliminate misunderstandings.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Not off the top of my head. They’re great and we couldn’t have asked for more. Our partners feel that we were lucky in finding DevelopmentNow. The alternative could’ve been painful.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

The more time and energy the client is willing to invest in DevelopmentNow, the more they’ll get back, in terms of speed or understanding. They have the people who can do the work either hands-on or hands-off. If the client wants to move quickly and help them, they’re open and transparent with their development process. This allows the customer to decide how much they want to engage.

I’m the CEO of Insight Data Services, a software as a service (SaaS) business that sells access to data much like selling a credit report.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with DevelopmentNow?

We were developing a website to access landlord references by gathering them and making them available for purchase. We needed a firm to replace previous developers that had done a terrible job with the site. They had made changes without our approval and the site was very unstable. We needed someone to assess the current status of the website and devise a plan with us to take it forward in terms of what we wanted and how to get there.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

DevelopmentNow rebuilt our Ruby on Rails website. The site is built on a large database and integrates identity verification, payments, and a feature for electronic signatures via a form.

We discussed the options of starting from scratch or building on the foundation we had. They presented scenarios to us for each option, including timeframes and costs. Once we decided to work with the foundation of the existing site, we worked through sprints. We would develop estimates together about what we could complete in each sprint including coding, reviewing, and QA.

The site is primarily complete though we haven’t officially rolled out yet. We encountered some issues with one of the identity verification processes through testing so they’re fixing it.

What is the team composition?

We worked with a project manager, developers, and a QA person.

How did you come to work with DevelopmentNow?

I was looking for firms with great reputations and focused in on three different vendors. I had heard of DevelopmentNow because they’re based here in Portland. I talked to their past customers and decided they were right for the project.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between $100,000–$120,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in August 2017. We finished the bulk of the work by March 2018.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We haven’t gone live yet but I've been very pleased with the developers that I have worked with. They’ve been creative in coming up with ideas optimize the process, giving suggestions for how to do things more effectively. I’m impressed with their communication, their intelligence, their speed, and their honesty.

How did DevelopmentNow perform from a project management standpoint?

We communicate over Slack and have weekly face-to-face meetings. They use Jira so I was able to track the development. They gave me access so I could add tasks that needed to be completed. Their time estimates are accurate and we’ve often been able to bring more into a sprint because they were faster than we predicted. We had very few failures in the QA process.

Everyone I’ve worked with at DevelopmentNow has been US-based with English as their first language. Our project managers, developers, and QA people changed over the course of the project but the transitions were always fairly seamless. One developer, for example, had a medical issue that meant he was out unexpectedly for an indefinite period of time. They assigned a new developer quickly and brought him up to speed at their cost, which was appreciated. They communicated well what was going on and we were pleased with how well they transitioned to new people.

The thing I like best about them, besides their skills, is their level of communication. For example, if I’ve had any issues or concerns, I was able to reach out to the CEO directly who would respond quickly. They are dedicated to communication and setting expectations.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Owning, challenging, and treating us like they’re a member of our team. For example, when we were considering features to include in the minimum viable product (MVP), DevelopmentNow would challenge us about what we needed now versus what wasn’t really needed for the MVP that we could put off until a later time. They helped us as a development partner to think wisely about what to develop now and what to do later. They did a really nice job for us.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Obviously, I'd love to have the team that I started with remain throughout as you develop the relationships. However, that’s really out of their control. You’d always love them to work faster and cheaper. They’ve done a great job of communicating throughout as issues arise. I’m pleased with them. There’s nothing that’s in their control that they can improve on.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Ask to be included on Jira and that everyone uses Slack. That way you can be involved in the QA process as much as you want. Maybe we've been involved more than other companies have been but they've been very welcoming to that.

Work with them to set expectations. Make sure you understand what they're saying and that, when they give an estimated amount of time, it will be accurate. A lot of companies will give you estimates that are far under the time required. DevelopmentNow’s estimates are accurate. They may seem like more than other vendors but they do good work and it ends up being faster with them.

The QA person that I’ve dealt with has really shown me the true value of a quality assurance person. I would strongly suggest people not go through a project without them. If you think you can do the QA yourself, don't. A good QA person is key and DevelopmentNow has great QA.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

NurseGrid is a software provider making healthcare technology to better manage schedules for nurses and other hospital and healthcare staff. We make two products: one is a free mobile application that nurses and other healthcare clinicians can use on their own to manage their calendar and communicate with colleagues, and our second product is a cloud-based staff platform that a manager at a hospital department or other facility would subscribe to. It plugs into our mobile app and distributes the schedule, makeup dates, and approve slots. I’m the product manager for the app. I make the hard decisions, working on growth and working off our users to build new features.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with DevelopmentNow?

Our initial resources led us to have to choose iOS or Android when developing our app, and we chose iOS based on surveys. We've grown quite a bit now, and resources have increased as well, so we wanted to make an Android offering and serve that portion of the market. We have a lot of untapped users there, and we know there's a lot of nurses and other healthcare staff using Android. We contracted DevelopmentNow to create a clone of our iOS app on Android.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The app is calendar-based. The main feature is a calendar where users can quickly enter and track all the shifts they're working and other events in their life. It has specialized features that support nuances of healthcare staff and schedules they work: shifts that span two days, regular and repeating shift schedules, and shifts at multiple facilities. All those things are accounted for. Our calendar makes it easy to enter those events as well as look at a glance and glean the necessary details about your schedule. Beyond that, we have a second layer of features that include colleague connections, requesting and connecting with your colleagues to send messages and see when one or another are working. Those are the primary components of our app.

There are also a number of features on mobile that were developed as a part of this project that plug into SaaS products, so there was support for our staff’s little features built into the app. The SaaS product is used by the institutions to manage their workforce who then use the app on an individual basis. That interplay between the two products was built into the Android app so users can receive shifts and seek manager approval for slots.

It was a little more complex than porting the app to Android. It was built from the ground up under a tight timeline, so that was the only complication. We had quite a bit of prioritization to get to a certain feature start by our scope of 10 weeks. Although it’s based off what we have built for iOS, all the code is original and native for Android. iOS design patterns and UI elements were adjusted for Android. No additional features or enhancements were done to the iOS version. There were four people involved: a project manager, two full-time Android developers, and a part-time QA engineer.

How did you come to work with DevelopmentNow?

We’re pretty tapped into the startup and tech scene in Portland. We asked around, and DevelopmentNow was recommended to us by a friend of the company. Our only requirements on the code of the project were experienced Android engineers. A bonus we got from their side was some solid QA work. It was part of their offering, but not something that we have planned for as we tend to QA on our side, but that was nice to have that resource included. They exhibited work that they've done for large clients and a number of apps that were live in the Google Play Store, and those things gave us confidence as well as kind of just a good word from friends in the Portland area.

How much have you invested with DevelopmentNow?

I believe it was $80,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The timeline was from the second week of January through the first week of April 2017.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We don’t have user metrics yet, as we did the final code hand off last week, so we haven't actually stepped into the wild. Any of our velocity or development metrics are probably not going to be relevant because they’re super project-specific. The ceiling is pretty high for expected users. In the first few months, we expect 10,000-15,000 users, and ultimately we'll help grow that to a few hundred thousand users.

How did DevelopmentNow perform from a project management standpoint?

Project management was great. Ryan [Brown], the project manager, was fantastic. We have a large enterprise customer who made it our requirement that we have a native Android experience. The start date for that customer was May 1st, so we needed to have something in that timeframe. It was a tight timeline, so we were actively working together to scope things in and out and prioritize. Ryan was proactive at coming up with solutions often. The whole project was on Slack and JIRA.

What did you find most impressive about DevelopmentNow?

The communication was awesome during this project. Not just the project manager, but the developers involved were communicating early and often. That was super helpful. That helped us with a couple of problems in the mud and be more effective.

Are there any areas DevelopmentNow could improve?

Honestly, it was a fantastic experience. The only thing was the challenge of forecasting a budget before it starts. We were close, but not spot-on, from a feature inclusion perspective and a budget perspective. We were extremely pleased with how things ended up.

What tips or recommendations could you share that might increase the likelihood of success with DevelopmentNow?

They built an entire app from the ground up for us, so I have confidence in their ability to start an original project from scratch. They're also familiar and up-to-date with everything regarding the latest Android API and OS. They would be a good fit for a project of any scale.

Please describe your company.

Mannheim is one of the largest automotive marketing companies in the world. We do dealer-to-dealer auctions, and we have multiple channels that the customer can buy and sell cars through.

What is your role and responsibilities?

I am a director of product management in the product development organization. I manage products within the development group, including mobile.

What was your goal for working with DevelopmentNow?

In the beginning, we were trying to get a mobile site and application up and running. We needed some expertise, so we could get in the marketplace with a mobile tool and mobile apps. DevelopmentNow helped us build our first mobile tool. We have a development shop. They developed it in iOS and Android, and we have a mobile site as well.

Please describe the scope of their work.

It was mostly all development work. We used them as an external, third-party workshop, a development shop.

What was your process for selecting DevelopmentNow with which to work?

We went through a few other vendors, and we had a high-level discussion with the president of development. It was a smaller project, and we wanted to see a proof of concept. Our relationship built from there. We worked with them for about a year, and then we brought the development back in-house.

Can you provide a ballpark dollar figure for the size of the work that they’ve done for you?

For the nine months that they worked on the project, it was about $1 million.

When was the latest milestone completed for that work?

The project was completed in 2010. I’ve been working with them since my company is part of a larger organization. We have other entities within there, and my team is helping DevelopmentNow connect with some of our sister companies. They’ve done some development work with a few of our sister companies.

How did DevelopmentNow perform?

We launched the app successfully with the mobile site as well as the iPhone and Android apps. They’re great to work with and very flexible. They had a quick turnaround in some of the development we had to do.

Do you have any statistics or metrics to track improvement from the project?

Half of our customers are utilizing mobile tools that they had helped building, although we did a lot of work after 2010 and enhanced that ourselves, too. It was what we expected from them.

Is there anything unique about them that really makes them stand out, compared to other companies?

They are very sharp in the mobile space. They really understand mobility. They are very quick in their development time frames.

Did you talk to any other companies that said it would take longer to build?

Yes. We had some RFPs [request for proposals] out to other, larger companies. Back in 2010, which doesn’t happen today, we needed a company that would write the code, and we would be able to bring that code back in-house. They were one of the very few companies that would allow us to do that. Most of the companies wanted to keep the code if they wrote it. That was something that we did not want, and it was one of the key factors for sourcing DevelopmentNow.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?

They were a smaller shop, so they didn’t have a lot of structure built in. That was back in 2010, but they’ve improved in that area now.

Please describe your company.

My company is called Got Swag'r Inc. We are a geolocation, gamification, and data analytics company for promotional offerings. We operate where people gather in large numbers, such as college campuses, sporting events, concerts, and military bases.

What is your role and responsibilities?

I am the president and the co-founder.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What was your goal for working with DevelopmentNow?

We engaged them to build our MVP, which is the minimal viable product. They did so, ahead of schedule and under budget. We engaged them on our version 2 of the mobile app, which is a diverse gamification tool. That’s where we are with them right now.

What platforms were utilized for the application?

We are currently doing iOS, and probably in the next two months, we’ll engage them to do our Android system. We don’t do tablets; we only do mobile phones. We only address iOS and Android. I’m not saying we won’t in the future, but now, that’s not what our needs are.

Please describe the scope of their work.

They provided an extraordinarily high amount of expertise in user experience, graphic design, and what I call hardcore development. We met with them once a week and gave them our vision. They provided a report when that part of the project was finished for our approval. We provided the vision and the scope, and they used their in-house resources to build from our vision. It was quite easy for us. They are local to Oregon, and are right down the street from our office in downtown Portland. Everything was in-house about four blocks away from us.

What was your process for selecting DevelopmentNow?

This was a unique situation. For four or five months, I conducted research before we started the company to find the right talent. Through my network, I started communicating with a company called Uncorked Studios; they do a lot of work for Nike. I approached one of the co-founders, and I pitched him on what we were doing. He said that it was a higher level of coding than he thought they were comfortable doing; they did one-off projects. He said he wanted to introduce me to a company he worked with that is hardcore in the coding and back-end development of mobile cloud development. That’s how I was introduced to DevelopmentNow.

Can you provide a ballpark dollar figure for the size of the work that they’ve done for you?

Right now, it’s about $50,000 or $60,000. We’re moving into Phase 2, which is about $15,000 a month.

When was the latest milestone completed for that work?

We went live on the App Store January 6, 2014. We’re doing a hard launch in mid-March, which is the spring quarter at the University of Oregon. We’re doing a soft launch now, testing it out on campus, and making sure all the bugs are worked out. In doing that, we’ll be putting in high levels of gamification tools into the backend systems so our users can gameify the promotional offerings from our brand partners. Once we’ve reached that hard launch, then we’ll renegotiate with them about the kind of partnership we’ll have. By then, we’ll have some in-house people, and we’ll move around which projects we’ll do in-house and which ones we’ll outsource.

Can you assess DevelopmentNow’s performance?

They’ve been under budget, and have met or beat every timeline that we’ve put together. I can’t ask for anything better because it’s impossible to get better than that.

Is there anything unique about them that really makes them stand out, compared to other companies?

They’ve actually become part of our company. We have such a good relationship, they’re not only our hired development team, they’re part of our culture now. It works well for us. I feel that DevelopmentNow is our development team for Swag'r, not just a bunch of coders who know how to write code. They’re more of a partner than a vendor.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?

Perhaps I shouldn’t say this, but maybe some of the employee might want to take a class in social activity. Some of them are hard core and live in their own world, but you need that. I get along with all of them. They’re all polite, businesslike, and they’re a little bit quirky, but I believe that’s what it takes to become a successful developer in today’s market. As a developer in Portland, you’re going to be a little bit outside the corporate banking arena. They understand our vision, they understand how to build stuff, and they’re passionate about it. As I said, the partnership couldn’t be better.

I work for Time Warner Cable Business Class, which is a commercial services IT provider.

What is your role and responsibilities?

At the time that I worked with DevelopmentNow, I was the business owner of TimeWarnerCable.com for Time Warner Cable Business Class.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What was the strategy behind your work with DevelopmentNow?

I wanted them to mobilize the online presence of TimeWarnerCable.com for commercial services. They came by way of reference through our residential team. They came in, mobilized TimeWarnerCable.com, and all of our products and services as well as our customer support options.

We were in the process of redesigning TimeWarnerCable.com, and we did not have a mobile presence at the time. It was something that was sorely missed from our overall eCommerce strategy, and we had been meaning to launch a mobile site. They came highly recommended as a shop that could turn this around quickly. That's exactly what they did. They set up an initial, interim page within two weeks. We were able to launch the fully scoped mobile site, which was dynamic within six weeks.

Please describe the scope of their work

The design was influenced by what we called Project Omega, which was the code name for the redesign project that we were undertaking for the PC version of the site. The PSDs were provided, and overall, the look and feel from a brand perspective was given. That being said, they created all the UX and UI design for the m-dot site.

What was your process for selecting DevelopmentNow?

Time Warner Cable is split into two distinct teams or groups. First, there is the residential services where you get your home video and phone service. Then, there is commercial services, which is where I work. That is all B2B work.

Can you provide a ballpark dollar figure for the size of the work that they’ve done for you?

I think it was $65,000 for the mobile site engagement. There are ongoing maintenance fees, and we are continuing to utilize them. They’re minimal. In addition to that, they are also hosting the m-dot site for us. That way, they can actively update the site when necessary.

When was the latest milestone completed for that work?

It was completed in late August of 2013.

Do you have any statistics or metrics to track improvement from the project?

DevelopmentNow might be able to share some statistics. They’ve been keeping track. We can get it from Google Analytics reports. We have been tracking the efficacy of various portions of the site. My role has since changed at TimeWarnerCable.com, and we were looking at the number of sales and support calls that the site was driving.

How did they perform throughout the work?

I was impressed with the timelines they were able to come back with. We were getting a lot of pressure from senior management to launch that as quickly as possible. They didn't hesitate – they just started right away. They did a great job in getting it completed and ready quickly. It's not an easy site launch by any means. Unfortunately, there is an element of localization that takes place with telecommunication services. In order to show the customer the correct price, the correct support number, or the correct sales number, all that has to be localized. They took geo-localization into account, and they were able to pair that with our existing ZIP code lists. They were able to scrape the public PC version of the site dynamically, and serve up the correct information based on where that user was coming in from. The first stage was who we were and what we do, and here's our phone number for support. We do sales and support. Within the six-week timeline, they did the entire dynamic site.

Is there anything unique about them that really makes them stand out, compared to other companies?

They are a small shop, and we typically work with much larger agencies. In this particular case, it worked to their benefit because they were nimble. I was impressed with the timelines in which they were able to turn things around. It's rare that you see that, especially with the quality of the work they did. We haven’t had to touch the site since it's been up and running. With the assistance that we needed with modifying the tool that they gave us, the CMS allows us to go in and update various areas of the site. They’ve been very responsive. We have certainly enjoyed working with them.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?

I think the facilitation of the project management is something they could be stronger at in the future. It's an area that they can work on. I think it comes from being a small shop with some young folks. The work really spoke for itself, and they got it done. There were a couple of times where we were left wondering where we stood in terms of the project deliverables. That was the only area where we had an issue.

Would you say they were improving as time goes on, or is that a lingering issue?

They’re not a company that I’m currently working with any longer. My role has changed at Time Warner Cable, so I can’t answer that question. From the coworkers that have taken over that responsibility, I haven’t heard that they’ve had any issues.

Could you give a bit of background info on your company?

The background info is that we have a tools company for realtors, and what we wanted to do is basically turn it into more of a social networking site to help buyers and sellers connect through Facebook, and that’s what DevelopmentNow helps us do.

What was the process for selecting DevelopmentNow to work with them?

Personal referral. I had been through a number of developers, and they all were very poor performers. I finally met DevelopmentNow, and they did a great job. Very true in everything they said they were going to do.

Could you tell me a little bit about the scope of the project?

They totally redesigned the website. They did Facebook integration then they compiled my properties so that it’s searchable. They put all of our properties into a searchable database.

Do you happen to know any of the technologies involved that they used? 

I don’t.

How long ago was the project finished?

Our project was finished by 45 days ago.

Can you give me just a very general cost estimate for the project?

Under $50,000.

How happy are you with the results of the project?

I think it’s great. Far exceeded my expectations.

Compared to other developers you may have worked with, is there anything that’s special or unique about DevelopmentNow?

They do what they say they’re going to do. They’re accessible by phone and email, and basically they do what they say they’re going to do.

Do you think there’s anything that they could improve or do slightly better on?

I think that they were the best people that I have worked with about getting the scope of the project. After going through it that the scope of any project is the most difficult part, and if there’s anything that we could have done better is to go through that even more. Although, at the time, I thought that go through the level of the scope we were going through is just way too detailed. Not necessary, but looking back on, that’s the most critical part of the whole project.

I was hesitant about creating an app for my company, after a few meeting to define the project I could not wait for the completion. The entire process, during each step in development was on time with all deliverables.

Excellent, after the project was defined, goals for each step and dates for review all on time.
