We’re currently testing the software internally, so we don’t have any quantitative metrics. However, we’ve had great initial responses from our team. Once we finish the beta testing, we’ll make the software available to clients.

They were easy to work with. We used Basecamp, Skype, and email to communicate as well as two phone calls every week. They were also present for scrums and other status meetings. They met all milestones, delivering the project within budget and relatively on time.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Debut Infotech took an interest in the business problems we were trying to address with the software. Their commitment was top-notch, and they remained absolutely focused to ensure success.

Are there any areas where they can improve?

No, nothing comes to mind. They aren’t a particularly large company, so there were some challenges with having enough resources. For example, they didn’t have any developers on standby to account for absences. However, I appreciated that they were honest about the situation, and they did everything they could to make sure that the time lines didn’t suffer.

HDFC Bank is one of the largest banks in northern India. Our in-house technical teams develop insurance and multi-care products. I am the sales and marketing manager for the region.

What challenge were you trying to address with Debut Infotech?

In order to reduce development time and budget, we look to external teams for product enhancement from time to time. Given that the team has its own schedule, our internal IT process is time-consuming. They developed an internal product used both by our sales team and insurance agents. We gather feedback from our sales team, so quick releases are important.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Debut Infotech developed an Android and iOS app for us. Its backend was already in place, but we wanted to build a server-side component that would work with both mobile apps. The product will be used by our insurance agents and salespeople, not our customers. The aim is to create a streamlined process for our internal team to track sales and client connections.

The scope included the development of the mobile apps, their user interfaces, and the server-side component. Our salespeople have login IDs, and they can use the dashboard to set up meetings with prospective clients, enter policy and contract details, and input know-your-customer (KYC) information and photos. It’s an online automation process for insurance policy management.

Insurance agents can see how many policies they’ve created, how many commissions they have accumulated, and so on. It’s a data process, with no payments or other functionalities. I would describe it as an internal CRM.

What is the team composition?

I oversaw the project, but one of our internal IT people was involved more closely. I approved demos and functionalities, working directly with Debut’s business analyst and one of their developers. Their project manager was involved, but the business analyst handled day-to-day tasks.

How did you come to work with Debut Infotech?

We shortlisted eight vendors, including Debut. They were introduced to us by a consultant. We checked their portfolio and went through a three-week screening process, during which we talked to all the vendors and invited them to our office for a demo. We had different criteria, including the candidates’ major past work, their knowledge, their ability to work with systems like ours, and their experience in the financial domain. We also considered the thought process behind the solutions they were proposing to us.

We chose Debut based on their presentation. One of their team members had worked on fintech products. We didn’t provide a lot of information in the beginning, but they had a good thought process. The price was good, given that we could work on an Agile, monthly basis and that they could support us. All these factors reassured our board members, so we engaged them for a proof-of-concept, followed by the complete project.

How much have you invested with them?

Until now, we have invested between $700,000 and $800,000 in their work. The overall project is estimated at $2 million.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Debut in March 2017. The first version was launched in August, and the second one in December. Version three will be launched in April. We have a three-year contract.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Debut met our expectations in terms of quality and scheduling. The application already has 7,000–8,000 users, which speaks to its adaptability, speed, look, and feel.

We knew what we wanted, but also asked the developer to provide it quickly and efficiently. Most of our salespeople are not technical people, so it was important to build an easy-to-use app. We measured Debut Infotech’s performance based on how efficiently they could do this, and how well they conformed to our schedule.

How did Debut Infotech perform from a project management standpoint?

We received daily updates. Because our offices are nearby, we also had monthly demos on the premises. Scheduling is important for us, given that we needed to deliver the product to our agents. Debut stayed on schedule and met our expectations.

We maintained good communication, and they prompted us to deliver all the required information. They asked questions and consulted with us when anything was unclear or needed to be changed. With their guidance, we created mockups quickly. This was a more appropriate approach, since putting a drawing in front of us gave a clear picture of how the component would look and function.

What did you find most impressive about them?

When we worked with other groups, quality was sometimes an issue. Their capability to deliver and support us after launch was a concern for us during this collaboration, but we’ve had a good, comfortable relationship with Debut. They continued to provide suggestions and support us after launch.

We appreciated the assistance we got with making changes and ensuring that nothing was overwritten. We were afraid that the stability of an app might be compromised after an update, so Debut performed proper QA testing.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Communication on their side was good, but they should provide more guidance around tools. Our team is not very technical, so having a presentation or brochure about the tools we’re using would be good. We would like more handholding and feedback.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

Customers should do their homework and compare feedback during demos. If they don’t give complete feedback, then the implementation will suffer. Providing a written document to the team will help with bug fixing. We have monthly and even weekly demos, and exchange feedback within two days so we can plan the next sprint. At the end of the day, we’re developing a product for ourselves, so it’s important to invest time in the developer.

Phase 1 has just gone live, so we are still in soft launch mode. So far, we’ve received positive feedback from users. The first version is a good starting point for the app, which has the potential to become the standard for geoblogging. Debut’s robust technical design and coding make our app future-ready.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

They’re very communicative, and they always make sure they understand our requirements before proceeding. The development process is quite easy and effective since we exchange documentation in Basecamp. We communicate via biweekly Skype calls, and we can always speak directly with the involved engineers. The communication skills of the business analysts, project managers, and engineers are excellent. We’ve visited their office in India, where we were welcomed as if we were a major client.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

I’m impressed with the expertise and effectiveness of Debut’s employees. They always keep their promises, and it’s a pleasure to work with them.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Debut is a fast-growing company, and we experienced some growing pains when we started the development of our app. It is important that growth should be managed very carefully. I have trust that the Debut founders can handle that and lead the company to a bright future. Aside from that, they’ve never disappointed me.

Once the first build was completed, we conducted QA [quality assurance] testing, which consisted of various bug fixes.

In terms of development, everything finished either on time or earlier. After we created the MVP, a lot of users reported that the app looked really good. As we developed new features, we kept receiving positive feedback for the concept.

Initially, we had issues regarding clarification after our first iteration of the product. However, during the second iteration when we decided to add new features, communication definitely improved. Clarification was handled better on both ends once we learned from our mistakes.

I was surprised by their app development expertise as well as their promptness. Every milestone of the project was delivered on time or even earlier.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Since the communication has gotten better, I can’t pinpoint exactly what else could be improved. They could boost their QA, as we had issues describing exactly what was going wrong and couldn’t always replicate bugs.
