I’m the e-commerce manager at Essex Brownell.

What challenge were you trying to address with CODECLOUDS?

We engaged CODECLOUDS to help us scale our e-commerce website. For context, our platform was monolithic and cumbersome, so we wanted a better solution. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

CODECLOUDS set up the backend of our e-commerce website and implemented a frontend that we could easily modify. They provided suggestions on our platform’s search capabilities, making it more streamlined and scalable. They also contributed to the website’s layout. 

We were on Magento and Adobe Cloud during this time. Eventually, we found out Magento wasn’t scalable enough for us. As a result, they moved us to Swell.is, which was a more scalable and API-friendly solution. It was hosted on Vercel and built on top of Next.js.

At present, we’re in the process of continual improvement. The CODECLOUDS team continues to work with us on the platform for maintenance and other projects and implementations. 

What is the team composition?

We work with two backend developers, a frontend developer, a QA specialist, and Subodip (Business Analyst).

How did you come to work with CODECLOUDS?

I found CODECLOUDS through my previous relationship with another company. They came to me via a referral from another e-commerce company that wasn’t as capable in a particular platform as they were.

We’ve invested between $110,000–$120,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The engagement started in July 2023, and it’s ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We’re still streamlining our processes, and we expect to double our e-commerce sales by the end of 2024. Apart from that, our licensing costs have gone down sixfold since working with CODECLOUDS. We also have greater flexibility in responding to what customers are saying, and we expect this to translate to better conversion rates. Overall, CODECLOUDS’ work has exceeded our expectations.

How did CODECLOUDS perform from a project management standpoint?

CODECLOUDS has good response times and project planning skills; they track the project using the Scrum method. When we hit unforeseen situations, they remain cool-headed. They navigate through these challenges and deliver tasks on time.

For communication tools, Subodip and I use Slack a lot. We also have weekly Microsoft Teams meetings to keep track of the project’s progress. Moreover, we’ve used Jira for project management, but we’re migrating to Monday.com for task tracking and Confluence for documentation. Their documentation approach has been truly fine-tuned.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The entire CODECLOUDS team has been great. Subodip has played a key role in helping me communicate with the development team. Meanwhile, their developers have been excellent in turning things around. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there aren’t any. However, we’ll work on improving our communication styles and workflows. We’ve got more players from our side, too, since we’re getting more input from our internal marketing team. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Use CODECLOUDS as a resource for recommendations. Do the research, and engage with the business analyst. This is important because they’re in the India time zone, but you’ll get a business analyst that works in the US time zone. This person can be part-time or full-time, and they’ll help facilitate communication between you and the development team. You’ll still get some overlap with the development team, but the analyst helps fill the gap.

The goal of the project is to develop a cross-platform mobile application using a modern and scalable architecture. It will leverage the robust back-end technology of Node.js and the cross-platform mobile framework React Native to ensure efficient data management, authentication, and integration with external services. The mobile application will be designed with a responsive layout and optimized for various devices, including both Android and iOS smartphones. 

The use of React Native allows for code reusability, reducing development time and effort across different platforms. Additionally, we will integrate strapi.io as the front-end builder within the React Native app. This will allow for easy management of the application's content through a drag-and-drop interface, ensuring that any updates to the app's content can be handled efficiently without requiring frequent app updates.

• Fully built, tested and functional app completed in 9 sprints over a 6 month time frame. 
• Approved and launched in Apple store and Google Play. 
• We will be about 3 - 4 weeks behind that time frame, but it was a very technical project.

Code Clouds worked on a three week sprint schedule being led by one project manager with a weekly team meeting. The response time was excellent. I asked for feedback and suggestions on almost every call and the team provided valuable insight. The scope of work was to build a SaaS from scratch using AWS and API development. As all development projects, over time there were some features that have evolved into other features; but Code Clouds' team was very informative and we've had routine calls to understand the thought process and the end result of what we needed to achieve. I've built platforms with Upwork freelancers / agencies in the past; and it always seems like regardless how many top ratings they get, I was never getting a holistic approach to building a project. 

And the team at Code Clouds provided me with a well diagrammed architecture review initially, going over the user flow and the outcome; while we started with a stable admin / backend before even touching frontend Ui. This approached allowed us to adapt to any necessary frontend changes quickly because the database was properly setup and configured along with the AWS setup. To ensure the quality was in place, I hired an outside consultant to do an architecture review once the platform was live January 2023 and Code Clouds came pretty close to nailing it from the beginning. 

Any changes that were needed, they quickly rectified and had resolved within a week and to be completely honest, I've had minimal server maintenance required in 8 months of being live; saving a lot of money that normally would just deplete my budget. Another part of the working with Code Clouds that I enjoy is that they have the flexibility to scale up / down when we need to ramp up new features or if we need to cool down for a couple of months. I scaled up to 4 full time developers during the initial period until launch and then scaled down to 2 full time developers to continue with non-essential features. I am proficient with my own Ui / UX so I handled this myself and brought a separate contractor to work directly with me. We used Zeplin and then the Code Clouds team was able to quickly implement into the live version from the staging servers that we had set up.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

I have a working SaaS platform that doesn't require any monthly server maintanence. The code is clean andI I'm capable of scaling my business and focus ongoing development with new features instead of fixing old features. Honestly this gives me such a peace of mind knowing I wont' have late night server crashes. I also love how Code Clouds has an Emergency Team that will assist with minor or urgent issues during off hours (including weekends). This is included in the cost and it also provides peace of mind knowing you can get a hold of someone for any possible issues that you may have. The company goes above and beyond to deliver our needs and requiremens.

You get a dedicated project manager, and my PM was also an experienced developer, so the communication made it extremely easy to work with the team when I provided wireframes and userflows. I also assisted with ongoing Loom videos for the team to review on their time, and it was great to see changes made when I would wake up in the morning. Response has always been practical and if there were issues or delays, I was giving communication about it.

For a large company, it still has a 'small company' feel which means that they are personal and you still have the founder of the company still overseeing every project going on. I love what you get when you pay for development.. They include a PM, Dev, Emergency Staff.. And its well time tracked and organized. They aren't burning up your hours or making up numbers to just waste your money. I think it's also important to mention that this is the second big project that I've hired them to do. I hired them previously to work on another project that I was excited to have them take part of, and so I wanted to continue the relationship and I brought them on the new project too.

Are there any areas for improvement or something CODECLOUDS could have done differently?

I needed a solid Ui / UX designer that is US-based, so I would have liked that, to avoid searching and finding someone on my own. Graphic design isn't the strong point with my own experience, but if you can get that covered on your end, the backend is set.

Work on our project started with an introduction call with the designer during which we discussed our ideas and vision for the website design. In a few weeks, he presented us with the first draft design. We really liked it and requested only some minor revisions. CodeClouds design team took everything into consideration and presented us with the second draft design. It looked fantastic.

However, we catch ourselves thinking that our logo looked old-fashioned and needed an update to match the new design. We had another call with the designer to discuss the logo, and after receiving multiple designs, we chose the one that perfectly aligned with our new website.

After that, a new stage of website layout started. We had a call with a CodeClouds developers team. They told us how the layout process would go and started their work. Every Friday we had a review call where we discussed work and gave some comments. And in just a few weeks, our website was ready.

We worked with the sales account manager, the design team and the development team.

Our primary objective for the website redesign was to develop a user-friendly website that would appeal to potential customers, and we can say that this goal was successfully accomplished. Moreover, we've noticed a positive impact on our brand recognition since introducing our new logo, as some of our partners have remarked on its design.
