I'm the global practice lead for demand management at Kapsch TrafficCom, a traffic management company. Our range of services goes from tolling to urban traffic lights.

What challenge were you trying to address with Berlin Bytes GmbH?

We wanted to create a new navigation product for smartphones. We wanted smartphones to know what urban traffic lights would do next so that users traveling alone could regulate their speed and find guidance for their route planning. Thus, we needed help with creating this product, especially from an app design perspective because we knew how the product would function, but we didn't know how it would look. Hence, we hired Berlin Bytes.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Berlin Bytes provided us with design and business consulting for our new product. Their work included performing a market analysis to see what was already out there, helping us ideate our business, and providing us with design recommendations and basic mock-ups.

Basically, Berlin Bytes provided us with early-stage consulting. Their team worked closely with us every week, during which we presented our ideas, what we were doing, and what we already had. Their team also talked with our design team to help us out.

What is the team composition?

We worked with five teammates from Berlin Bytes, but the main team that worked with us had three members in the end.

How did you come to work with Berlin Bytes GmbH?

They came to us as a recommendation. We had already worked with Berlin Bytes' mother company, and we also knew them from other projects.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around €80,000 (approximately $87,000 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

We had our first workshop in November 2022, and the engagement concluded in the summer of 2023.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Berlin Bytes successfully helped us ideate our app and business. Although their involvement demonstrated that we already knew what we were doing, we would have done this exercise anyway because they helped us reach what we wanted.

How did Berlin Bytes GmbH perform from a project management standpoint?

Berlin Bytes delivered on time and on budget; their project management was very good.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Berlin Bytes was a very good team. I liked their ideas, and even though they were a young team, they had enough experience, which was very helpful. I also liked their spirit, positive attitude, and eagerness to learn. What we asked them to do was totally new for them. Still, they really jumped into it and offered great ideas and different viewpoints, which was what we needed.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There was nothing they could have improved on. Their team does a lot more in the marketing and app development spaces, but we only required consulting, which was fine.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

Work closely with them and have a lot of meetings. That was actually what we did; we had a lot of weekly meetings and workshops to get their ideas.

We needed web development services to fix bugs on our site.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Berlin Bytes GmbH provided web design and development services for us. I didn't work at my company when Berlin Bytes GmbH developed our Shopify website, but I engaged with the team to fix bugs in the current layout of the front- and backend. I also worked with Berlin Bytes GmbH on adding more functionalities and pages to the site as needed.

I provided Berlin Bytes GmbH with a brief when requesting a new task. The team worked using Java and Python. Berlin Bytes GmbH built user accounts and the interface's customer journey. Users can add their information, including billing and shipping addresses. The team also created editorial pages with modules and product pages.

I worked with Berlin Bytes GmbH's project manager, two developers, and a UI/UX designer.

My company's engagement with Berlin Bytes GmbH precedes my time working here, and I'm unsure how they initially contacted the team.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Berlin Bytes GmbH delivered good-quality work and met our expectations. 

How did Berlin Bytes GmbH perform from a project management standpoint?

Berlin Bytes GmbH's delivery times were long, and I needed to follow up closely on them. We used ClickUp for project management and communicated via Slack, email, and recorded weekly meetings.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Berlin Bytes GmbH fixed bugs the first time.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Sometimes, Berlin Bytes GmbH couldn't find a solution to our issues. We requested features that weren't compatible with Shopify, and I expected the team to offer a solution or alternative. I expect service providers to be able to provide solutions for their client's problems.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

I suggest being clear about your project's needs and deadlines. I also recommend following up on the team and creating a good channel for communication.
