The Aterise team has transformed the project into a complete service, offering software and consultancy for online payment processing, enabling clients to accept payments on their websites. They developed a modular system for easy integration with various payment systems, ensuring high user satisfaction. Additionally, the team implemented an automated delivery process with testing, significantly reducing the time to deliver new features.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The solution is already in use by end customers, integrates with international banking systems and includes an anti-fraud engine, helping customers reduce transaction risks and chargeback rates. After rebuilding the system, it became scalable and expandable. With fully automated delivery in place, new features are quickly deployed to production. The team also moved all data to the cloud, enhancing security and processing speed. In collaboration with Aterise, we underwent an audit and received certification to host and process payment data.

Please describe your company and your position there.

My former company was a digital retail bank with a focus on innovative digital products. I was an IT project manager at the time, responsible for seven Scrum teams.

For what projects/services did your company hire Aterise?

We hired Aterise to develop two things: (1) a digital loan app that could process loan applications and provide payments to customers and (2) a risk monitoring solution that could predict any kind of customer default cases.

What were your goals for this project?

We had a very hard deadline and only six months to build the complete functionality and the frontend.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We chose Aterise as they had previous experience in the FinTech banking sector. Also, they completed all test tasks in a timely manner with very high quality. Moreover, during the tests, we realized that they communicated their progress on potential issues or alternative solutions very well.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

The application was built in Ruby on Rails. We had two teams. One was responsible for building the loan app, collecting data, coding the decision engine (which would decide which customers would receive a loan and at what interest), and administering the payout to customer accounts. 

The second team was responsible for building the risk management system where customers are classified according to their payment-redemption habits.

What was the team composition?

We worked in Scrum with a shared Scrum Master for both teams. Team 1 consisted of: four developers, two testers, and a business analyst. Team 2 included: three developers, a tester, and a business analyst. We also had a shared resource handling DevOps and UX.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

We don’t have any concrete metrics because this is confidential, but we enjoyed working with Aterise. In general, they had a very good attitude, and it was a pleasure working with them.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

We worked in Scrum and had all meetings accordingly. There were daily meetings where everybody discussed the goals and tasks of the day, and planning meetings at the beginning of each cycle, which lasted two weeks. 

We also had review meetings where the developers showcased the work done, and retrospectives where we discussed progress and improvements that we needed to take care of. The project manager was responsible for checking the timeline and budget constraints

What did you find most impressive about this company?

I appreciated their dedication to delivering the project in this short amount of time. They never complained about working more when something needed to be finalized in a sprint.

But most of all, I found their way of communicating impressive; it made it so easy to have a team spirit and a joint goal. Also, for the quality that they delivered, the costs were more than reasonable.

What specific goals or objectives did you hire Aterise to accomplish?

• We needed to extract, decompose and migrate part of legacy monolithic rating engine written on VB.NET to a bunch of .NET microservices and incorporate it to an existing enterprise architecture. The additional challenge was to make the architecture scalable and sharable across other teams and make it as a referenced example to migrate other engine parts in the same way.

The engineering team approached the project at hand with a step-by-step strategy that included: 

• Requirements elicitation and analysis and stepwise roadmap creation. 
• Close analysis of affected areas and close communication with related teams to build the top-level architecture and data flow. 
• Design and implement feature-flagging strategy for soft migration and provide the ability to run both legacy and the new engine together so QA team was able to verify that no business logic is missing or broken. 
• Separate migration into small portion of steps and implement features sprint-by-sprint. 
• Keep track on source code quality using configured SonarQube. 
• Share knowledge across multiple teams and utilize Postman collections and Swagger for documentation purposes. 
• Implement effective caching strategy with multi-level cache (in memory + Redis) that improved engine performance.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Currently multiple teams are developing new lines of business for the engine in parallel using our architecture as a guideline which was almost impossible with highly coupled legacy application.

I am working as a Project Manager for a European FinTech company. At headquarters in Germany, we develop AI algorithms and software, efficiently applying our trading approaches to global financial markets and the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

We hired Aterise to work on our flagship product and its end-user part. Aterise were actively involved in the UI and API parts of the system, and helped with server configuration and DevOps activities.

We recognized Aterise as a dependable software development partner because we had previously worked with them on design. Our company also valued their extensive FinTech and banking knowledge. We chose Aterise because of the well-built communication throughout the early phases of cooperative work, the high quality of test execution, and the in-depth technical experience of its specialists.

Describe the project in detail and walk through the stages of the project.

Aterise engineers have studied the current project in details from the perspective of business requirements for the final product, its development prospects and plans for the coming years. Based on this, Aterise provided their assessment and recommendations for improving the system for stable, predictable and controlled product development, support and information security.

How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

1 Frontend and 1 Backend Engineers working on the Scrum model with our internal team and me as Project Manager.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

At the moment, thanks to the actions of Aterise staff, we have seen a significant acceleration of the product assembly speed, reduced system response time, faster and smoother operation of complex UI components. Implementation of new features has become less time-consuming. Logging became more informative and detailed. We also got e2e and performance tests and reports, allowing us to estimate the system's capabilities under load, plan the infrastructure costs and growth of the number of users.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Project management is characterized by a high degree of flexibility and adaptability. This is a plus for this type of project like ours, as we transform very quickly and try to take into account both the wishes of users and the dynamic situation in our business domain. Aterise also actively solicit feedback on their work, respond quickly and promptly to difficulties that require attention, offer alternative solutions, participate in discussions in every possible way and always stay in touch.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I enjoyed their excellent communication throughout the project, quick reaction to challenges, and level of competence, all of which assisted us in achieving the intended outcome. The developers collaborated well and completed the project on schedule.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

In my opinion, no.
