Concierge Care Advisors engaged Apzumi to design and build Senior Navigator, a config-driven SaaS platform that guides families through senior care planning decisions including assisted living, memory care, and in-home care placement. The engagement ran approximately six months and covered full-stack architecture, development, and AWS deployment. 

The contracted scope included: 

A multi-module Angular frontend with NGXS state management and PrimeNG components, delivering a guided care planning journey, a Care Funding Plan module with Financial Review section, and a Learning Center. 

A Spring Boot / Java 21 backend with PostgreSQL on AWS RDS, integrated with Cognito for authentication (including Facebook OAuth), SES for transactional email, and S3 / CloudFront for asset delivery.

A config-driven architecture in which form logic, validation, scoring rules, and UI flow are defined in versioned JSON templates rather than hardcoded, allowing platform behavior to be changed without code deployments.

AWS infrastructure spanning development, QA, staging, and production environments, with supporting CI/CD and monitoring.

Feature development across the Guided Care Plan scoring engine, Cost Estimate product, Financial Review Dashboard, Plan With My Advisor product, Start Over flow, and outro / navigation screens.

Quality assurance, project management, design, and DevOps support throughout. 

Key delivered artifacts included the production Senior Navigator platform running on AWS, the JSON-configurable template system that our internal team has continued to extend independently, the full Care Funding Plan module with simple and advanced modes, Cognito-based authentication with social sign-in, initial New Relic APM instrumentation, and a baseline Playwright end-to-end test suite.

The config-driven architecture in particular has proven valuable well beyond the engagement. It was designed to let our team iterate on platform behavior without touching code, and once admin access was granted in early February, it allowed parallel workstreams between Apzumi's development and our own configuration work. That design is what enabled a smooth transition to independent maintenance when the engagement concluded.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The engagement delivered several outcomes that demonstrate meaningful progress:

A production launch on schedule. Senior Navigator reached its soft launch on the target date in February, with the Guided Care Plan, Cost Estimate, Financial Review, and Plan With My Advisor products all live in production.

A working config-driven architecture. The JSON template system delivered on its core design goal: platform behavior (form logic, scoring rules, validation, and UI flow) can be modified through configuration changes rather than code deployments. This was validated in real time during the engagement, when parallel configuration work ran alongside Apzumi's development without conflict.

Multi-environment AWS infrastructure. Development, QA, staging, and production environments were stood up and operational, with appropriate environment separation and deployment workflows.

Authentication and identity. Cognito-based authentication was functioning in production, including Facebook OAuth social sign-in.

A clean handoff to internal maintenance. At the close of the engagement, our internal team was able to take over ongoing development without a gap in velocity. The config architecture, codebase structure, and environment setup were well-documented enough that we have continued to extend the platform independently — including significant refinements to the scoring engine, a full Care Funding Plan redesign, expanded test coverage, and additional infrastructure hardening. The quality of the handoff is itself a measurable outcome: there was no rebuild, no rescue engagement, and no lost ground.

A professional close to the commercial relationship. Final invoice reconciliation was completed cooperatively, with both parties aligned on the final settlement. The engagement ended on good terms.

Project Management Apzumi's project management was organized and consistent throughout the engagement. The team ran regular status updates, maintained clear ticket hygiene in Jira, and kept us informed of progress across the development, QA, and staging environments. Malwina, our primary project manager, was responsive and proactive in surfacing blockers and coordinating across the frontend, backend, and QA disciplines.

Deliverables generally landed on schedule, with the soft launch hitting its target date. When timelines shifted on individual tickets, the team communicated early and adjusted scope or sequencing in a collaborative way rather than letting issues linger. Weekly touchpoints kept both sides aligned on priorities, and their internal meetings and prep work showed up in the quality of the updates we received.

The team was responsive to feedback and flexible when requirements evolved mid-sprint, which happened often given the config-driven nature of the platform. Questions sent to the PM or engineering leads were typically answered within the same business day, and handoffs between their team and ours were handled smoothly. Overall, the engagement felt well-managed from a process standpoint.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

 Most Impressive or Unique What stood out most about Apzumi was the caliber of their engineering talent combined with a genuine willingness to build what we actually needed rather than defaulting to a template. When we brought them the config-driven architecture concept — which is unusual and adds significant upfront complexity — they engaged with it thoughtfully and executed it well rather than pushing back toward a more conventional approach.

The team navigated those interdependencies well and kept the architecture coherent as scope expanded. The team also brought a healthcare-adjacent sensibility to the work that we didn't expect from an offshore partner. They understood that our product wasn't just another SaaS product, and that the families using it would be navigating some of the hardest decisions of their lives. That came through in the care taken on UX details, error handling, and accessibility. 

Finally, the cross-functional depth of the team was impressive. Having a full stack of frontend, backend, DevOps, QA, design, and project management under one roof made the engagement feel cohesive rather than stitched together, and it's part of what enabled us to move as fast as we did.

Honestly, nothing significant comes to mind. They delivered what we asked for, the team was responsive, and the engagement closed on good terms. Any minor friction along the way was handled collaboratively as it came up.

Apzumi has been tasked with transforming SkinScreener into a Software Development Kit (SDK) for deployment on local devices by the Portuguese Ministry of Health, integrating our AI-Powered Assessment tool to enhance early skin cancer detection across Portugal. The project scope involved redeveloping the existing application designed for quick and user-friendly skin cancer risk assessments into a modular SDK for seamless integration and scalability. Apzumi refactored the core application, added new components, optimized architecture, and fixed existing bugs to enhance performance and stability. Mobile launchers were developed for SDK previews, and a React Native wrapper was created to enable cross-platform compatibility.

The project delivered several key measurable outcomes that highlight its success. The SDK successfully passed internal quality tests, ensuring high performance and reliability. A sample integration of the SDK was prepared, demonstrating its functionality and ease of implementation. Most importantly, a fully functional version of the SDK was delivered to the Portuguese Ministry of Health, marking a significant milestone in the project’s rollout. These achievements confirm the project’s progress and its readiness for real-world application.

What I found most impressive about Apzumi was their proactivity, speed of work, and the quality of the code they delivered. The team consisted of specialists who were able to provide valuable insights from a technical perspective, ensuring that every decision was well-informed and aligned with our goals. One area for improvement could be better synchronization between the Android and iOS development teams. While everything was delivered on time, the testing process couldn't be done simultaneously across platforms, which could have enhanced efficiency.

Apzumi built a secure medical platform capable of onboarding invited users. A health assessment was built to design. API's were built to populate the user's personal page with specific videos and pdf's as directed via API from a separate database. Users are advised of update by email and sms of any changes to their profile. Apzumi was able to adapt to changes required by us as we added to the scope regularly

Apzumi did a great job of keeping me informed about each stage and specific work efforts next in line. At job's end, I received exactly what we ordered. Changes required were reasonably priced and did not overly extend delivery dates.

Project progressed on time. Additions to the work effort added on as I broadened the scope were cost effective and delivered in a timely manner. We had weekly check-ins during discovery and during development. Our project manager is excellent, Joanna took our additions in stride and delivered as requested. I have another data scientist (now our CTO) working on another aspect of the project in parallel and they worked together very well and he had a high degree of confidence in Apzumi's work.

This was hard to say, but I was very happy with the experience and the final product.  We are already having post production additions and as expected, the work effort, timing, and delivery date are all clearly established ahead of time.

I would have liked a better tutorial on the preproduction workspace. It was difficult for me to view on my own.

The were the consumate professionals...organized, process driven, attentive, understanding, and best of all were minimalists...never acting like our requests were too much or our project was misguided. They were asked to provide not only technical expertise but advisory input as well. They guided us as true pro's. Totally responsive for things they could control. We felt completely comfortable with their guidance and advisory input. We pivoted a coule of times at their recommendation...and are grateful we did it. They were fantastic.

The project kicked off with workshops with stakeholders in order to analyze business requirements. An integral part of the project was extensive user research to better define user expectations when it comes to mobile app usability. Then, Apzumi proposed the solution’s architecture. 
Once they were accepted, the coding started. When the app was ready, it was tested focusing on usability to ensure navigation is intuitive and the app’s performance can handle many concurrent users. Then, the app was deployed, and the project documentation was handed in.

The project requirements were met, and the app was delivered on time. General feedback from customers using the app is positive: they liked its intuitive design and ease of use.

First stage of the project was focused on shaping the product and creating a fully functional design which will address the pain points of the previous system and the goals of end users.Then the team has started to work on the development - they delivered key functions of the system in iterations and gave us UAT product environment on which we could have tested and provide feedback to the team.

Core functions were a database of videos on-demand with an easy and intuitive filtering system and Vimeo integration, joining live video classes with coaches and making the system accessible for 3rd partyusers. Important was also to track the progress of each user to motivate them and encourage them to use the platform.

Ontime delivery of initial launch.  Over 500 new users on the platform during the first month.
