As Development Manager, I assign the tasks and monitor the progress from assignment to passing final testing. The developers are assessed on

1. How closely they complete each task to the time estimates for that task
2. How many times (if any) their tasks are returned from QA testing for rework
3. Their ability to accept more advanced tasks as they learn more about our system.

The developers have no Project Management responsibilities as I handle all PM duties. I try to stay ahead of them in terms of assignments, but if they are running low on work, they let me know that they will need more work in a "day or two". All of the developers I work with are very good in communicating to me in a timely manner. They also let me know, in a timely manner, if I assign a task to them that they are not able to work on AND the reason they cannot work on it. I am very satisfied in the communication skills of all these developers.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

It's easy to work with not only the technical staff, but with their administrative staff, as well. I have addressed my satisfaction with the technical staff above, but my interactions with the administrative is equally pleasant. All of my issues (and there have been very few) were addressed promptly and resolved with complete satisfaction.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

If I had to pick an area for improvement, I would say we would like the developers to improve the self-testing of their software updates before giving it to the QA staff. Having said that, our internal staff understands that these developers have been working on our software for a relatively short time and testing all aspects of an update is something that comes with time. We are pleased with the work we are getting from these developers, and we hope that as time moves forward, their testing skills will improve.
