99X is creating a new product for us. They also design the UI and provide documentation about the server side and how they communicate with each other. The team uses Figma for design and Python for development. The product is client-facing and aims to secure the client's system by adding an additional layer of security.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

It's still an ongoing project, so giving numbers is hard. However, 99X provides high-quality work.

How did 99X perform from a project management standpoint?

Everything has been fine. We had some bumps in the road initially, but everything has been great for the past two months. We communicate using Slack and Microsoft Teams.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The developer is proactive in letting us know if there's anything we should know. If we have an idea that isn't practical, they get back to us with a more useful way to implement it, which has been helpful.

Are there any areas they could improve?

In the beginning, our communication wasn't good enough, and the exchange of information wasn't great. However, we talked about it, and the improvement was impressive. The change in communication has been great.

They're a great team with a good structure. It's easy to work with them.

We needed support to develop our web application and website.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Nextly offers remote staff augmentation services and has developed our web application's front- and backend, which runs on AWS. The team has also built our website. Nextly has demonstrated they have experience in the different technologies we wanted to use on this project, which include Node.js, React, Lambda, AWS, Amazon S3, Amazon Cognito, and Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS). 

Initially, I spent a couple of calls with Nextly's lead engineer reviewing our project, and within that week, he delivered a complete list of my application's requirements. He has ensured to demonstrate he understood all of our requirements by providing a detailed document. When Nextly was developing our website, the team had already built several components of the web app and was able to reuse a lot of the code they had created. 

The site has been developed from scratch and hosted on Amazon S3 and serves in a content delivery network and AWS. The team has designed the website UI and created animations. Nextly has worked in collaboration with our UI designer.

We work with three frontend engineers, a UI/UX designer, and two backend engineers, one of whom is the lead engineer. We've also had assistance from Nextly's CTO early on.

I have a technical background of 25 years in software engineering, and I defined the technologies I wanted to use on this project and how to architect the app. When searching for service providers, I looked for organizations that could help with those particular technologies. I reviewed Nextly's reviews on Clutch, narrowed my search to two service providers, and started engaging with them.

Nextly stood out because they brought a lead engineer into our first calls who gave us a week of his time for free. We reviewed our project's requirements with the team and decided we were a good fit.

Nextly has completed our website and web app. We've received several signups for our waitlist and are working through it to start our closed beta phase with the people from the waitlist. I'm impressed by Nextly's ability to create a well-designed app in terms of aesthetics and UI. The team has done a pixel-to-pixel recreation of the design created by our internal UI designer, which is incredible. I'm very happy with the quality of the look and feel. 

Nextly has created an impressive design for an MVP product. Our goal was to stay a bit scrappy and ensure we could design on top of it in the future stages of our MVP. Nextly has architected the app in a way that allows us to grow easily, and thanks to the resilient architecture, we've been able to modify the app quickly and easily. 

Nextly has created a website that runs well and has great animations. Initially, we didn't have a clear idea of the animation work we wanted on the site, but we knew we wanted it to have movement, and Nextly's team proposed great ideas that we accepted. Nextly has demonstrated robust technical skills.

How did Nextly perform from a project management standpoint?

We constantly communicate with Nextly about the project's deadlines and budget. Whenever the team is worried about the budget, they are always clear, so I have an estimate of what it'll take to complete each task and any cost overruns we might incur as a result of onboarding additional staff. We have a weekly standing project meeting and one-on-one meetings to discuss any solutions or designs we need to do.

We also have a Slack channel with all the engineers who have been assigned to our project. We've worked with different engineers who have been rolled off throughout the project because they completed that portion of the development. It's good to keep all teammates who've worked on our project in our Slack channel so they can see what stage the project is at and stay updated. We primarily communicate via Slack.
Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

Luis (Software Architect) has been phenomenal in helping us understand work. I've taken solutions to him, and on more than one occasion, he has come back proposing a better way to accomplish the same solution. He demonstrates how to find a better solution and is an excellent asset to our project. He has simplified our architecture and design and, overall, made things better. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

One thing that stands out to me, which I wasn't expecting, is that I came to them because I thought I needed technology-specific support rather than business logic support. However, once Nextly understood what our company is about and what we're trying to pull off, they found people within their staff with previous experience in the same domain we required. Nextly has pulled them into the project to work on some very business-specific functions, which has been incredible. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

We haven't encountered any issues working with Nextly. At one point, some engineers were doing refactoring while we were trying to get the website launched, and the lead engineer stopped them when he realized they were working on refactoring instead of the outstanding tickets. Nextly caught and addressed the issue and didn't charge me for that work because they knew that wasn't what I wanted to accomplish at that point. Nextly has been incredible to work with at every step of the way.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

Having Nextly's lead engineer assigned to our project has been really good for us because I can't spend my time directing the engineering team. The fact that I have someone to rely on who directs the team, guides them, and also maintains stability throughout the project while teammates have rolled on and rolled off has been the most effective thing.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We needed to strengthen our development team with more testers and this we found in Sri Lanka and 99X. Here we find a lot of competent and skilled people. Later we wanted to expand with developers when we started to develop new systems that supports our CRM offering. The success is that we work tightly with our colleagues in 99X on a daily basis and are able to deliver with quality on a frequent basis.

The way we work with our team members in 99X is that we have both testers and developers in Norway and Sri Lanka. These people work geographically in two locations (or more), but work as one team with daily stand ups and frequent planning meetings. We have Scrum Masters both in Norway and Sri Lanka.

99X understand Norwegian and European culture, they are flexible with helping us finding the right resource or relocate resources to other teams/projects for mutual benefits if things does not work out. It is important for us that 99X has a healthy and sound HR policy and work conditions and by that have happy employees. That 99X have good ratings in Great Place to Work is good.

Are there any areas for improvement or something 99x could have done differently?

If we have any concerns we have great communication channels with 99X and we sort things out. 99X is always listening and helpful. New challenges and areas of improvement will always arise, but this is a responsibility for both parties to resolve. The most important thing is that the communication works well between our two companies.

Nextly could communicate better in terms of any issues that crop up in relation to the resource we have. Usually, no news is good news. At the same time, it’s always good to get confirmation that everyone’s happy and we’re on the same page.

I’m the co-founder and CTO of Spotfund. We’re a crowdfunding platform that helps individuals, businesses, and nonprofits raise money for various causes.

What challenge were you trying to address with Nextly?

Nextly provides outsourced engineers for us. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Initially, I spoke with one of Nextly’s team members via Google Meet and discussed what we needed in terms of React-based development. They said they had the right person for us. Within 24–48 hours, I was back on a call with that person. 

We started working with her. There was a bit of a learning curve, but I managed the knowledge transfer and set her up with some people from our existing engineering team. She started out with a week of reviewing our code, looking at the requirements of the things we built, and looking into our upcoming requirements. 

Moreover, we walked her through our platform, technology stack, deployment process, testing process, and other things. From there, she worked on minor tasks that were short in nature. Then, her tasks ramped up quickly. After that, we added one more frontend engineer from Nextly to augment our team. 

Fast forward to the end of 2022, my most senior backend developer left, giving me a one-month notice that he was moving to a new opportunity. I then reached out to Nextly and asked them about a backend Python and Django engineer. They said they had a resource available, so we brought that developer into our team. 

Our backend is incredibly complicated. It’s a full-service fintech platform with plenty of end-to-end workflows both in and out of the platform. As a result, it took a little longer for the new developer to get up to speed. We had a one-month crossover with our senior resource who was leaving, and most of the training was done within that period. 

In January 2023, the backend developer started doing more complicated tasks with my supervision. By the end of that month, he was off and running. 

At present, that backend developer is completely leading our backend development team. We now have three resources from Nextly on our front- and backend. They participate in our sprints. Once a week, we define what they’re going to work on in the upcoming week. They create code and engineer our platform, shipping the code in a way that helps us stay competitive in our market.

We work with two frontend engineers and one backend engineer from Nextly. 

How did you come to work with Nextly?

We found Nextly through Clutch. I searched for the best offshore React developers and came across their Clutch profile. We also looked into a couple of other teams and reached out to them. What I liked most about Nextly was their accommodation of our needs. 

At that time, we only needed one person to add to our team. Meanwhile, the other vendors only provided a full team, including a project manager and 2–3 developers. We had an established development process and engineering team, so we only needed one more team member to get through some of our backlogs.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

As the CTO of our company, I’m responsible for making sure our code is of high quality — Nextly is perfect on that. From a cost perspective, their services are less expensive than if we use a US-based team. While it’s hard to put how much we save in numbers, I can say that they’re half the cost of a full-time US-based developer with the same level of quality and quantity. 

Moreover, their engineers are truly intelligent. If I write requirements that are 75% good, they can fill the 25% gap. One of the resources has been on our team for almost a year and a half, and I can give her high-level guidance rather than detailed requirements. 

Overall, Nextly’s velocity, code quality, cost, and efficiency have been great. They’re at the top of our list. On top of that, they work well together and are truly communicative with me and our team. I feel like we found a great company to work with as we continue to grow. 

How did Nextly perform from a project management standpoint?

While the process has its bumps along the way, I like that Nextly’s resources are self-sufficient. We plan our sprints, and they hit their goals at the end of the week. I’m truly pleased with that. In terms of budget, we lock in a certain number of hours a week. We rarely have to go beyond our budget unless we have a pressing matter or complicated task to accomplish. 

For tools, we use Trello for everything, including our workflows and sprints. To communicate, we use Google Meet and Slack. Nextly is on our Slack channel, and they’re highly communicative there. I can always get a hold of them quickly if something urgent comes up. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

We’re pleased with Nextly’s talent and our smooth transition. Their management team is highly accommodating and always available for conversations. They check in on our needs and are flexible. If someone’s on vacation, they work hard to fill the role if we need it. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

We’ve been finishing two incredibly complicated projects in the last four months, and the resources have taken longer to finish. However, this isn’t only for them; it’s also for our internal engineering team — the projects are simply too complicated.  

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Treat the Nextly resources as a part of your team. You have to be involved and take ownership of the engagement and management of the resources. If you simply throw things at the wall, they’ll never get done, and the results won’t be good. 

Be hands-on with the team, especially when planning your requirements. Make sure you’re crystal clear. Be smart in communicating information because things can get lost in translation when you’re not sitting face-to-face in an office. You can lose time quickly, especially with an offshore model where time zones don’t exactly match up. Take a high level of ownership.
