What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We regularly followed Extreme Programming Agile practices in our development partnership with 10Pines. During our work together we followed the regular bi-weekly sprint cycle - planning, pointing, executing, measuring, and following-up on the work with retrospectives.

It was rare that the team estimated something that they couldn't hit - they had a firm understanding around the complexity of the problems that were handed to them, and understood the execution around it. Then when they went to execute, they did it in a way that made sure they were delivering timely quality.

Before anything would reach me, they had their own internal structure of pairing, code reviews, and product testing to ensure that everything met expectations before it ever reached my desk. Additionally, they were very communicative along the way. Nothing in a project is ever static, and 10Pines never worked in a silo. They went out of their way to ensure that things were built to our satisfaction.

Yes - we worked in an Agile Extreme Programming environment. The team was very dialed into their velocity, and very good at estimating the complexity of new features / fixes.

If something seemed to be more complex or something came up that originally wasn't seen by either party, they were very quick to raise it with us and make sure that there was solid communication around the problem to be sure that there was the most transparency possible - in addition to making sure that the ticket or task was adjusted to fit scope in a way that matched our expectations and still fit within our timelines.

They really went out of their way to make sure that we were getting the product that we wanted. They cared - deeply - about what we were doing. They loved the product as their own. This showed up in the little things.

I remember one time a team member asked if she could be a little more creative with the implementation of a feature - something that doesn't happen when it's a company simply receiving funding and outputting code. What she turned out stayed in production through the life of our company - and brought the spirit and creativity of 10Pines to a product that they clearly deeply cared about.

10Pines is like any other professional relationship - it takes time to get to know each other. 10Pines will absolutely adapt to your needs, and if you're flexible, will grow with you on your product journey. Leave room for creativity and embrace them as your own team and they will work wonders with your product and team.

Give them honest feedback about your expectations, what is working, what isn't working, and how you can work with them to produce better results, and they will jump at the opportunity to make the relationship better. There's no such thing as one-size-fits-all. But there is such a thing as fitting to the size that is needed. 10Pines excels at that.

When we first started with 10Pines, we had three engineers working with us. Over the years, the number of team members fluctuated between 3–5. Currently, we’re working with five people.

How did you come to work with 10Pines?

I chose 10Pines based on the technology stack. I researched and created a shortlist of companies that seemed to have a team engagement model as well as the experience in Ruby on Rails. We had a call with three companies in total. I felt that 10Pines had a culture that was a good fit for us.

How much have you invested with them?

We’re charged on a monthly basis based on the number of hours each engineer works on the project.

We started working together around 2016 and our relationship’s ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

They deliver on their assignments. Their team doesn’t just take the assignments and check them off. They have their thinking caps on and find the best way to solve the task. There’s a feedback loop built in that I appreciate because they’ll point to a better way of completing an assignment.

How did 10Pines perform from a project management standpoint?

The vast majority of the engineers that I’ve engaged over the last four years have had good communication skills. There are times when I expect assignments to be done sooner. When they see a task that’s way bigger than I thought it would be, they bring that to my attention.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They have engineers working with other clients who have built up different expertise. When we want to try new technology, they have teammates with that expertise and can provide feedback.

Are there any areas they could improve?

After working with us for a couple of years, their engineers may want to move on to change their skillsets. That’s not always the case but I wish I had more control over that.
