BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the CEO of SUITE, which develops mobile applications for small and mid-sized businesses in Senegal. We’ve been working on our own products as well.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with YUX Design?

We had worked with them to improve our mobile applications for food delivery. We’d been working on them for 12–16 months, but these apps had been largely unsuccessful upon launching.

To pinpoint the issue, we conducted user surveys at restaurants and talked to users and deliverers. From there, we found that the UX flow of the app could be drastically improved. We wanted to optimize food ordering and tracking into seamless processes.

I had some experience with UX, but my team ultimately lacked experts. That’s when YUX design came into the picture again.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

YUX Design redesigned and optimized the UX of our platform. They worked on three different applications: a back-office for restaurants, a front office where clients can make orders, and an app for people making deliveries.

We had sprints for all three apps, each with 2–3 iterations for customer feedback. They made improvements and we repeated the process.

YUX Design conceived of improvements based on our initial survey and implemented them into our apps. Then, they delivered a prototype that we could test with users. They helped us set up the user testing by finding the right people for it, and they also reviewed the conversations that we recorded.

What is the team composition?

We worked with 4 people, two of whom were fulltime. The team consisted of a UX lead, a junior developer, a senior developer, and a project manager.

How did you come to work with YUX Design?

I had worked with them in 2016, and I also saw their work with other companies in West Africa, who also had great things to say about them.  

How much have you invested with them?

We spent $5,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The engagement lasted between March–August 2019.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

YUX Design’s UI work was emotionally impactful. Restaurants, delivery people, and customers have all provided positive feedback for the product, which now boasts a smooth UX/UI.

This engagement taught us to approach development from the users’ perspective. We really got more than what we asked for.

 How did YUX Design perform from a project management standpoint?

I was able to track all project progress through various online tools. We shared everything on Google Drive, and they provided us with a platform for logging all of our discussion notes. We also had a scrum dashboard which indicated how much time the designers needed for each task. We used Marvel for sharing designs before we proceeded with user testing.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Instead of rushing through the design process, they gave us several days to determine our exact direction. Their designers engaged heavily with our internal team to brainstorm ideas and gauge our preferences.

They assigned us extra interns, more than what we contracted them for. They were very generous and helpful.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They had to rush during some parts of the project because they had to assign their resources to other projects. As a startup, we have limited resources, so I’d appreciate if they had more capacity.
