I'm the CEO of Mobile MedSoft. We develop, install, and support software for the long-term care and the retail pharmacy industries, as well as electronic health record systems for nursing homes and assisted living centers.

What challenge were you trying to address with XBOSoft?

We were doing QA testing in-house but it was hit-or-miss. The main complaint that I had from customers was that we were delivering buggy products. We needed an external resource to oversee our developers and make sure that things were being done correctly. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement? 

XBOSoft does automated regression testing on our software before we deliver to our customers. We flew our head of engineering and our head of sales and support to Beijing to meet their testers. We educated them on our software and gave them full access to our software and our code.

They run a more stringent QA process than our in-house testers. They focus on every detail, even down to spellcheck. They make sure that our programmers don't make any mistakes. 

What is the team composition?

There’s at least a half a dozen, if not as many as 10, testers working on our software.

How did you come to work with XBOSoft? 

I met Philip (CEO, XBOSoft) on a business trip to Beijing. We started chatting and became good friends. I knew they’d be able to help our engineers because we didn't have the capability with regard to regression software testing. 

What is the status of this engagement? 

We started working together in November 2009, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The bottom line is that XBOSoft is successful. They tell us something isn’t working right, so our developers can fix it. We've never done any real statistical analysis because we don't have time. We develop what our customers require, and they need it now. 

How did XBOSoft perform from a project management standpoint? 

The XBOSoft team is excellent. They point us in the right direction and keep us on track. We have an on-time system for them to log any bugs they find. Our team works on the bug and then they retest to make sure it’s fixed.

What did you find most impressive about them? 

Their professionalism stands out as the most impressive aspect. XBOSoft is able to see things from a different perspective and ask smart questions. 

Are there any areas they could improve? 

No, I can’t think of anything they need to improve. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers? 

Make sure to give them the access that they need upfront. That allows them to do their job the right way. If you're going to hire QA testers, do it right and stay out of their way.

XBOSoft team stayed on top of new QA builds and reported regression issues quickly giving us time to fix before release. They documented regression tests and created BDD framework for test automation. Results of test automation were presented to us in reports and we were able to quickly measure the readiness for the releases. XBOSoft team went an extra mile when we had to do hot fix releases to PROD in short time frame.

XBOSoft provided excellent professional engineers who understood our regression and test automation needs. XBOSoft delivered in several phases.

• Phase 1. XBOSoft assessed all of our test artifacts including defects, test cases, test automation scripts, and user stories. They provided a document outlining areas of improvement.

• Phase 2. XBOSoft provided a comprehensive document outlining our current state with areas of improvement for our QA processes. They then provided a presentation to our executive management helping us to prioritize and develop a roadmap going forward.

• Phase 3.  XBOSoft then provided our first step in the process via a quality metrics workshop which helped us to understand what aspects of quality are the most important for our company and clients.

• Phase 4. We now have followed up with a re-tooling process where XBOSoft has reviewed our usage of tools and how we can best configure them to support gathering information for long term improvement.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

• With XBOSoft’s training and process improvement recommendations, we were able to test much faster, up to 40%, but also able to reduce defects in production by 60%. XBOSoft’s automation framework also enabled us to write scripts with minimal maintenance thereby increasing our new script development speed by 34 percent but also reducing our maintenance hours by 35% at the same time.

XBOSoft was excellent at their communication from the beginning setting up expectations and deliverables. They really educated me in the process in terms of learning what to expect from a partner as I had never worked with another 3rd party for QA or testing services.

They work with minimal guidance, and they were able to predict what I needed before I asked. What’s important is that due to this. I felt they were a part of my team rather than an external party.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The most impressive thing about XBOSoft is that their employees have been with the company for a long time which means they can bring a lot of experience and expertise with them. I felt I didn’t have to train them on our application for long as they have tested many banking applications. I also felt they know how to keep a project on track and within budget, and communication was excellent. Their collaboration and availability are second to none.

More specifically XBOSoft's goal was to streamline our Regression testing process to improve our product to market capabilities. In addition to our main goal XBOSoft brought their vast testing experience to help guide our team on best practices and mature our testing environment.

• Regression testing has improved from 2 weeks down to 1 week via the implementation of a test automation framework.
• Number of defects that have reached production have reduced significantly due to the expanded testing coverage.

XBOSoft integrated into our team with ease. Communication was prompt and responsive. XBOSoft feels more like a partner than a vendor. They seem really invested in the delivery dates and do whatever it takes to make sure our releases are bug-free. We work collaboratively and plan our work together but sometimes they/we have to work overtime. Fortunately, as a partner, they don’t charge for overtime whereas most vendors would.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The working relationship is what separates XBOSoft from the others. The partner versus vendor element was quite unique and refreshing. We never feel like just another contract to XBOSoft. They seem really invested in our product and are eager to partner with us to see a successful finished product. The communication lines have always been honest and open which goes a long ways to a strong relationship.

Are there any areas for improvement or something XBOSoft could have done differently?

We cant think of anything we would change in our relationship with XBOSoft. Sometimes it can be a hit or miss when consulting with a company but we couldnt be more happy with the work XBOSoft has provided. It gives us great security knowing we have a strong partner in our testing journey.
