We’re passionate about partnering with entrepreneurs backed by venture capitalists, private equity, and angel investment. They come to Shrine because they have a problem to solve, they want to move fast, and they need to be confident in the result.

Freightroll

The Freightroll mobile app puts booking, tracking, and communication in the hands of drivers, allowing drivers to decide when and where to pick up loads. Load postings and communications are consistent between mobile and web apps keeping shippers and carriers up-to-date at all times.

Midway through the Freightroll app build, Shrine was brought in to rework the application. Shrine worked closely with the Freightroll

team to implement new features. Using existing design plans, we improved the look and functionality of the Freightroll mobile app, creating a pleasant experience for the end user.

After a swift development cycle, the updated Freightroll provides a simplified experience for drivers, improving communication between carriers and shippers. Freightroll is available to download on the iOS AppStore.

PassageX

Passage, a ticketing company in Detroit, wanted to create a blockchain product with the goal of eliminating ticket fraud on the secondary market. They also wanted to release their own cryptocurrency for use with their blockchain product.

Shrine Development has blockchain expertise and the ability to assist in navigating the legal aspect of unknown tech. Our team developed a private blockchain network and token for use

by PassageX. We created and deployed numerous web applications to view, monitor, and interact with the network.

We developed APIs and documentation with the understanding that third parties would rely on this technology to integrate with PassageX. Our CEO worked closely with PassageX to support their legal effort. We also supported efforts to find users for the PassageX platform, and fundraise and find partners for a token sale.

Brightback SaaS Platform

Brightback

Revolutionizing Customer Retention for the Modern Age

Today’s consumers have the world available at their fingertips. Thousands of times a day, they are targeted by well-funded and well-thought-out marketing campaigns urging them to try new products or switch to new services. With so many options to choose from and so many messages crowding the

market, today's customers don’t just need to be won over - they need to be convinced to stay.

Brightback automates customer retention for subscription businesses and SaaS companies. Like many newly formed startups, Brightback needed a development partner that knew how to transform their vision into a reality. Shrine was hired to help build out the SaaS product and help with AWS deployment while ensuring the time to market was as short as possible.

Shrine played an integral part in helping the Brightback team create a superior product that managed customer segmentation and automation. The platform is able to provide users real-time retention workflows by integrating with popular customer engagement tools, dashboards and insights for growth executives, and actionable save reports for success managers to engage accounts based on intent to cancel, reason for leaving, competition impact, and more.

Shrine once again utilized its time-tested app development process to provide all parties accountability and transparency into each step of development. Brightback’s team continues to work with Shrine and has been able to focus on making its platform as powerful as possible knowing that it has a development partner who can help them bring their most innovative ideas to life.

Plain Sight Mobile App

Optimizing the Local Networking Experience

With the rise of co-working spaces, the traditional ways of doing business have significantly changed. The Plain Sight app connects individuals in coworking spaces together in real-time to help them streamline their operations and to find other local professionals within their network and immediate proximity.

The founders of

Plain Sight had a clear vision of how they wanted to revolutionize modern co-working and needed to get to market quickly. Shrine worked closely with the Plain Sight team to turn their vision into a fully functioning app ready for market. Plain Sight relied on the experience of the Shrine team to understand their idea and provide meaningful feedback throughout the entire development process while also helping them avoid the many pitfalls new apps typically experience.

Shrine stepped up as Plain Sight’s total tech team and successfully introduced the functional mobile app to market along with a landing page for the app, all according to the Plain Sight team’s original timeline. Today if you work in a coworking space anywhere in the US you can download the Plain Sight app, learn more about the professionals within your building and leverage this community to help you grow your professional network.

Pinyada iOS App

Earn Cash Anywhere. Anytime.

Pinyada connects its visitors with popular brands and allows them to earn cash back for trying new products, services, apps, coupons, videos and more. The app’s users can receive cash payments direct from Paypal when they redeem the points they have earned.

Numerous roadblocks and issues with Pinyada’s initial development team put the app’s

launch in serious jeopardy. Speed to market can make or break an app, and the development team Pinyada first hired put the entire project at risk of never getting off the ground. Recognizing the dangers of being so far behind schedule, the team decided to look for another development partner. They were drawn to Shrine because of our track record of building and launching apps like Pinyada, and because of our experience in helping companies successfully transition from

one development partner to another. The Shrine team faced an extremely tight deadline to reorganize development and position the app for a successful launch. It was a challenge the Shrine team met head-on.

Shrine quickly realized much of the initial development would be unusable. With this knowledge, our team immediately began building the iOS app and focused on getting it delivered on time and within scope. We were able to achieve this because Shrine follows a simple, efficient development process to help clients navigate an otherwise complicated and technical undertaking. Our experience and dedication shined through, successfully launching the app that almost wasn’t.

The collaboration was focused, and Shrine Development provided a lot of insight throughout the process. They were flexible and communicated well, and they were generous with their time.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

We're the innovation center within a large financial institution. We're tasked with creating new financial services and technology products for the market. We are the program manager and development lead for our department.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Shrine Development?

Program Manager (PM): We wanted to pursue blockchain-related technologies. There were a lot of possibilities, and we wanted to explore our options.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Development Lead (DL): The product is a financial assistance tool that several people within a particular group pay into. At regular intervals, one person from the group receives the entire payout. They used blockchain and a platform called Corda, a distributed ledger program. They also used container technology for deployment.

What is the team composition?

PM: We worked with one primary developer and one of their owners. Late in the project, we also worked with a project manager to help with follow ups and budget tracking. The primary developer did the bulk of the work.

How did you come to work with Shrine Development?

PM: A member of our leadership team made a connection with them at a conference. After a few conversations, our executives decided they would be a good fit. They're a nimble company, and we had similar outlooks on flexibility and changing requirements. It was a small, focused project, so we decided to hire them.

What is the status of this engagement?

PM: I think we started working together around October 2018. They delivered the last part of the code around June 2019.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

PM: One of our primary objectives was going through the process and learning more about blockchain technology. We're focused on learning, and we took a lot of information from this collaboration.

How did Shrine Development perform from a project management standpoint?

DL: For ad hoc organization and communication, we used Basecamp. We were pleased with their communication overall.

What did you find most impressive about them?

DL: They worked well with minimal information, which is part of the reason we chose them. They were honest and agile, and they worked with us through a lean approach. Whenever we faced something new, they took time to research possible solutions.

PM: From a leadership perspective, one of their co-owners was very flexible with the contract. They never quibbled about costs, and they often wrapped things up without charging us. They were fair and generous, and they gave us leeway.

Are there any areas they could improve?

PM: We had a couple of communication breakdowns, which may have stemmed from tech issues between Google and Microsoft calendars. There were no significant issues, and we're generally pleased with them.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

We operate a for-profit food distribution network. The selling arm of our company is an e-commerce website that was developed over a decade ago. This small business has four employees. My primary responsibility is sales and marketing, however given my experience in all aspects of the business I was appointed point person regarding website development.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Shrine Development?

Like many small businesses, we depend on a third-party IT Company for technical support. The IT Company we work with was instrumental as a consultant/contractor for our website development. Much of the past work on the website was outsourced overseas. It was not uncommon for simple requests to take more than six months to complete. Due to poor response times and a decrease in website performance, we started to shop for a local organization that could both educate and assist with the website updates necessary to scale our business.

What were your goals for this project?

The immediate goals were to eliminate login errors, lost and/or incorrectly transmitted orders, and hosting issues. Based on past experience, we expected this to be both a costly and lengthy process. Shrine Development far exceeded what we thought was possible in a very short time. We expanded our goals to include more marketing functionality and improved design.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We wanted a vendor that was within a few hours of our main office. In June 2018 we began interviewing multiple developers and pursued a few into the quoting stage. Shrine Development was chosen because they understood the urgency of our project. Their willingness to work with our current e-commerce platform to accomplish our immediate business goals was a driving force in our decision. In October, 2018, we selected Shrine Development as our development partner.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

The Shrine Team duplicated our e-commerce website on a separate host server where we could both view changes being made as well as test the result in a live environment. They quickly identified specific problems and resolved them. In each case, they were able to initiate corrective measures in less than the quoted time.

To date, Shrine has eliminated errors, assisted with new hosting, increased our website's performance, added desired design changes, improved the user experience, and integrated our new branding. At every step our e-commerce website improvements were launched with zero downtime. They are currently working on structural changes to allow customized marketing to specific customers.

What was the team composition?

Each project has been a team effort consisting of two members of our company and representatives of Shrine Development. I worked directly with Doug and Chad on the completed updates to the current e-commerce website. Other team members were pulled in to assist as needed.

The update currently in process involves nine members of the Shrine Development Team. Additionally, Malissa is spearheading the research for a potential future project involving an e-commerce website with an integrated ERP system.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

We are on track to have the website updates completed and launched ahead of schedule. Since the initial updates went live, we have been adding new customers. Customer concerns about error messages, or an inability to access the website have been eliminated. The addition of branding to the design provides a more professional look. Our confidence level in the reliability of our e-commerce website has vastly improved. We now feel the website is the selling tool necessary to lead our expansion efforts.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

They present themselves as a professional team and follow through on that perception. All projects are managed through Basecamp, which provides a large assortment of tools to track the progress of assigned tasks. Basecamp also provides a time-stamped platform for instant communication. Communication with the people doing the work is what makes working with Shrine Development so efficient and successful.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Shrine Development understood our priorities and goals. They did not force their own agenda on us. They asked appropriate questions to gain clarity before moving forward. Their use of Basecamp was especially helpful in keeping all parties informed and up to date on the progress being made. It has been an inclusive experience.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Budgets are important to customers and seeing justification for the money being spent over time is more comforting than one large lump sum at the end. If there were a way to post hours of work performed each day, it would reinforce that a customer's project is continually moving forward.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am a co-founder of Plain Sight. We are a mobile platform that helps people decide where to work based on the type of professional connections they want to make.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Shrine Development?

We engaged Shrine Development to build our full mobile app.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We came to Shrine Development with wireframes and relied on them to build Android and iOS applications using React Native. They also created a landing page with a custom admin dashboard using Squarespace.

What is the team composition?

We work with five people.

How did you come to work with Shrine Development?

I found them on Clutch, and Doug and Malissa (Co-Founders, Shrine Development) were natural partners from the beginning. They quickly saw our vision and understood our business model., and the combination of their skills and their partnership has been really valuable for us. They have sharp business acumen on top of their technical skills, and that combination is hard to find in the development community.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our engagement began in December 2018 and remains ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They brought our ideas to life. Their technical expertise made them one of our most important partners.

How did Shrine Development perform from a project management standpoint?

Basecamp is not my favorite platform, but the way they use it has been helpful for us. They’re on top of all the deadlines. The usual trope in the development community is to double any estimate you get, but that wasn’t the case with Shrine Development. They told us it would take six months, and it took six months. Any time we’ve spent beyond that is because the scope of the project has grown. We’re very happy with them as partners, so we continue to engage them.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It can be hard to find tech talent in the Detroit area, so they brought on a few team members during our project, and there were a few that rotated off as well. Bringing new people into an existing project can be hard and slow things down, but Doug and Malissa did a good job of keeping the team aligned through changes.

What were your goals for this project?

Our goal was to create a prototype with a beautiful flow that made it easy for gamers to interact with our site.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

It was simple. Using Clutch, I searched for the best software companies in Michigan. Shrine Development was at the top! Clutch played a huge role in pairing me with the right software firm.

Describe the project in detail.

I contacted Shrine Development about my project. The founder quickly scheduled a call and face-to-face meeting. They were incredibly interested in the project and began work just one week later! They built the entire product, transforming my idea into a prototype. It took them about a month to finish the project.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm the co-founder of a website builder platform.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Shrine Development?

I've worked with a number of contractors in the past, but many of those relationships lacked consistency. I needed a more reliable solution, so I was looking for a new development team.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They help me with my web development and frontend design needs. We have a lot of legacy features on our platform, so they've been updating a lot of settings and features. In addition, they're analyzing third-party APIs to see if there are different ways for us to do things. They mostly work with Ruby, MongoDB, and Backbone.js.

What is the team composition?

I work with two members of their team.

How did you come to work with Shrine Development?

I'm also a co-founder of another startup and Shrine does a lot of work for that company. They've done a great job, so I decided to bring them on for this project.

How much have you invested with them?

We've spent between $10,000–$15,000. We pay them about $3,000–$4,000 a month for the ongoing maintenance and new feature development.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in July 2018 and the relationship is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They're helping us find cost-effective and reasonable solutions, without me having to dictate to them what to do. They're like an outsourced CTO for us and help us spend our money wisely.

How did Shrine Development perform from a project management standpoint?

They work quickly and stay on top of everything. They use Basecamp on their end, and I have everything in Asana, so they've been able to use my existing tools. They're very proactive and always ask me if there are other things I need. I get very busy with other projects, so I appreciate that. I've been working with their junior developer on smaller things and their senior developer always jumps in if there is a big decision we need to make, so it's been a good balance of talent and budget.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They're very thoughtful and look at all the pros and cons, helping us figure out the best plan. Also, they're direct and honest, which is the key to a long-term engagement.

Are there any areas they could improve?

More thorough code review by senior staff would be helpful to ensure consistency of high-quality code. But, overall, the project is going smoothly, and they've exceeded all of my expectations.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm the CEO of Passage. We're a ticketing and payment platform for specialty events. We help event organizers sell tickets to their events both online and at the door.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Shrine Development?

We needed to develop a new R&D into a blockchain-based ticketing side of our company, so we were looking for a development team to help us.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They did most of the work using Fork of Ethereum, and they also used node.js for the frontend. We wanted to be able to record ticket transactions on the blockchain, which has a totally different way of looking at security, especially when it comes to transition of ownership. Right now, secondary ticket exchanges don't talk to each other. But with the new platform, we can actually track the original ticket and transfer the ownership right in the blockchain before they let someone resell it on the marketplace. The tracking is done through the blockchain record, which is right on the blockchain ledger.

What is the team composition?

We worked with three of their developers.

How did you come to work with Shrine Development?

We were introduced by our investor, whom we trusted. Also, they were local, so we met with them and discussed our project. After that, they put together a plan for us, which we liked. They were very professional and creative, so we chose them.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent about $140,000–$150,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked with them between August 2017–September 2018.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We expanded our current capabilities, which made us more attractive to a new market and investors. Our platform became more secure, opening us up to secondary event ticketing as well as primary. At this point, it's mostly a proof of concept development, so it's only partially live. We're planning to do another phase with them soon.

How did Shrine Development perform from a project management standpoint?

They're very professional. Shrine used our existing communication tools, such as Slack and Asana for project management and we had many whiteboarding sessions in our office, which was very convenient. They were great communicators and quickly addressed any issues. Also, they met our deadlines. We do all of our technology development in-house, but they were very flexible on the communication side.

What did you find most impressive about them?

It's hard to come by a company that has expertise with blockchain, so it was definitely their strength. They were willing to dive into the project and they even took some trips with us to trade shows and physically participated in the process when needed.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No. That was an experimental project for us, so there are some goals that we wish we could go back and change based on the things we’ve learnt. Shrine was able to adapt to changes, rather than being rigid on the initial contract.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm the CEO of a company called Freightroll, an online freight marketplace.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Shrine Development?

We needed an iOS app.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The app was reasonably complex. They developed everything for us and took part in every phase, from design to completion. We just concentrated on an iOS version, and I believe they used Swift to build it.

What is the team composition?

There were four team members: a junior developer, a senior developer, a project manager, and their CEO.

How did you come to work with Shrine Development?

I liked the quality of their work and their professionalism. We used two other development firms previously that were not as efficient, but Shrine executed exactly what we wanted.

How much have you invested with them?

The whole project cost around $30,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The start of the project was around March 2018 and we finished most of the development by the end of April 2018.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We are an app- and web-based company, and giving the app to our truck drivers is important to our success. It’s easy to make changes in the product and we were impressed by how quickly they delivered. The location-based services they added enhance our operations and are an asset we will continue to use.

How did Shrine Development perform from a project management standpoint?

They were very professional and managed the entire process with very little intervention. If they ran into an obstacle in one section, they would work on other pieces until they heard from us. They never stopped working if we were not responding quickly.

Communications were great. They sent daily updates on what they had achieved, what was outstanding, and how many hours they worked. Most of our communication was through email, but we also had them in our Slack channels. We could chat with them in real time, and they would respond and follow through with our requests.

I liked how quickly they could come back into the project. We completed most of it after about a month, but they jumped in weeks later to help us complete elements and get the product launched. They were always efficient, attentive, and well-organized.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The development itself was solid. My CTO was impressed by the capabilities of the language and the code. It’s very clean and will be helpful when we need to make future changes or audits.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They were completely reasonable and got everything done that we wanted them to do. I don’t have any complaints.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the VP and co-founder of a big data consulting firm. Our specific focus is on the reinsurance industry.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Shrine Development?

We needed help with multiple development projects.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Most recently, we’ve been engaged with Shrine Development to develop an application for one of our clients. The backend is built on an SQL server, and the frontend uses a React library. The team also performed Windows executable certificate client work. Technologies and programming languages the developers use include the .NET stack, Objective C, and C#. In the past, they’ve helped us create a blockchain proof of concept using IBM Hyperledger technologies and other projects of that nature.

 What is the team composition?

The team included graphic designers who worked on the UI, architects, project managers, and server-side backend developers.

How did you come to work with Shrine Development?

A trusted mutual acquaintance recommended Doug (Co-founder & CEO, Shrine Development). I needed a team to deliver on a difficult initial engagement with high expectations and not a lot of time. My friend told me Doug could absolutely do the job.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent over $100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We’ve been working together since October 2017.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Shrine Development is blazingly fast. They deliver earlier than your wildest expectations. I wouldn’t say they’re cheap, but that wasn’t what we were looking for. Their overall value is unquestionable. They offer a combination of quality and speed that is hard to find in this day and age.

How did Shrine Development perform from a project management standpoint?

Shrine Development is a team of amazing communicators. They leverage tools, technology, and traditional methods to keep in constant contact. We never had to wonder about project status. They make sure the customer always knows what’s going on. The team is always very proactive. They efficiently use Basecamp as a central hub for documentation and communication.

What did you find most impressive about them?

When you find somebody like Shrine Development, hold onto them for dear life. These types of people are hard to find.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No. I’d like to test their ability to handle multiple concurrent projects at once, but I haven’t been able to yet. All of our projects have been relatively serial in their start and stop nature so far. I can’t count this as a negative because I haven’t assessed their ability to scale.

At this point, I have no concerns. No matter what I bring them, I’ve gotten the sense that they have a good size team considering how efficiently they deliver projects. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with them.

Shrine Development delivered an excellent prototype that’s free of coding errors and functions smoothly. The polished app demonstrated the platform’s potential to investors and generated the necessary sales. Their team works hard, communicates efficiently, and excels when confronted with challenges.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the CTO and founder of a customer retention startup. We specialize in helping subscription-based businesses and software as a service (SaaS) companies grow.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Shrine Development?

As a newly formed startup, we had not yet raised enough capital to hire in-house engineers. Therefore, we hired Shrine Development to build our software prototype.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Shrine Development collaborated with me to build the prototype application. We requested them to use Java on the backend and React on the frontend. They created the operational infrastructure on AWS using tools like EC2 and S3. They’ve developed a Kubernetes cluster in addition to the initial prototype. Their team also provided some monitoring and alerting work for us using Grafana and Prometheus.

What is the team composition?

So far, we’ve worked five different resources throughout the engagement.

How did you come to work with Shrine Development?

I had worked with one of their founders prior to him creating Shrine Development. I knew that he produced high-quality work and had a good eye for recruiting and training talent. I had a short timeframe to make a decision, so I relied upon my history and experience when considering potential firms. That process resulted in us hiring Shrine Development.

How much have you invested in them?

We’ve spent roughly $100,000–$150,000 thus far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together in March 2018 and the engagement is ongoing. The original agreement was around the creation of the prototype and subsequent support services. Once we completed that initial phase, we established an ongoing contract with them for a minimum number of hours each month.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They correctly itemized everything and delivered the outcomes we wanted on time. As a result, we were able to vet the idea and raise additional capital based on the prototype. We now have several customers using the app. We’ve since engaged their services further so they can perform multiple functions such as frontend engineering, backend engineering, and DevOps. We’ve begun to grow the engineering side of our company but still use them as a resource buffer of sorts. As a growing company, we value this flexible and supporting relationship.

How did Shrine Development perform from a project management standpoint?

They use Basecamp and we’re fairly happy with that as a software. One of their engineers holds regular meetings to communicate the priorities of each development cycle and evaluate how their performance matches up with said priorities. Shrine Development uses tools effectively, communicates frequently, and gives us a lot of confidence in their ability to drive development forward. They do a good job of hitting milestones and providing information if anything changes.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Because of their exceptional development and project management skills, they’re more of a partner to us than an outsourced firm. We don’t have to watch over them closely or do a lot of the management work. They’ve built complex systems for a lot of different customers and have done so by utilizing a variety of engineering and product inputs. I’m most impressed with their ability to take rough ideas and build them to completion. Most outsourcing firms require clients to have polished and detailed specifications before even considering doing business. Shrine Development offers a more full-service experience. They’ve demonstrated the capacity to deliver every aspect of a project successfully.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No. I don’t have any substantial recommendations at this time.
