We hired the Rill Insights team to help us research different verticals that we might apply our data verification suite to. We wanted to figure out which vertical would give us the highest likelihood of achieving product market fit before investing time and resources into it. We started at square 1 and did research across the entire market from sizing, to competitor, to positioning, to user interviews. Key deliverables included analysis across all of these dimensions, with each vertical compared to the other in terms of likelihood to achieve product market fit.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Measurable outcomes included a recommendation for which vertical we were going to pursue, as well as signals across the verticals to figure out if our product would even have a chance of gaining traction.

The Rill Insights team always communicated clearly and was dilligent in setting up project milestones. We used both a Slack channel as well as weekly syncs to ensure we were always on the same page, and they were always ready to assist with our needs.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The most unique part about working with Rill is that you know they deeply care about the work they are doing. They aren't there to try and tell you what you want to hear, instead they are there to really make sure that the research is done correctly and follows a strong methodology. You could tell by the way they were constantly teaching us how to do the research ourselves, and by the methodologies they followed to ensure they were getting at the ground truth. Another impressive aspect was their ability to quickly adapt to the new AI tools, without harming their core methodologies.  When doing research, the ground truth is important, not what you 'hope' to hear, and the Rill team did a fantastic job of making sure that the output of their work reflected that.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Rill Insights & Design could have done differently?

Rill constantly adapted to new information as the project progressed and were steadfast in their methodologies from start to finish. As previously mentioned, they were also very open minded about adapting to new technologies that could help enhance their research, without compromising the viability of the results. As a result, I don't have any suggestions for areas of improvement and we had very direct communication throughout the entirety of the project where adjustments were made on the fly effectively.

Strong research discipline, large volume of work output and backup research and notes, distilled with high level conclusions.

On the solutions side, there were many practical constraints of where product design and architecture, particularly front end rearchitecture needs. The overall solution direction was accurate. To take action, due to the legacy kinks in the product, we needed technical front end engineering development expertise to build and iterate toward a viable solution set. Rill Insights expertise on the problem discovery and research side were the key benefits over the solution design recommendations.

Bryan came into Vessel at a time when I thought we had a pretty good customer feedback system in place, boy was I wrong.  He brought in a level of sophistication that turned our customer feedback into actionable, measurable improvements to the product and experience.    He is also very efficient with his time, it didn't take long for him to make these improvements, to train the team, and to get us going on his program.

The biggest thing I noticed over the term of our engagement was tailoring the content to our needs. Some on our team were completely new and it often felt like a deluge of information. Making this more consumable to the audience and timely to their specific need is something I'd focus on if I were to re-engage with Rill Insights.
