An Enrolled Agent is a federally-authorized tax practitioner who has specialized proficiency in the field of taxation. Individuals earn this elite status through comprehensive examination and must adhere to a stringent annual continuing education requirements, administered and supervised by the IRS. Enrolled agents, like attorneys and certified public accountants (CPAs), have unlimited practice rights. This means they are unrestricted as to which taxpayers they can represent, what types of tax matters they can handle, and which IRS offices they can represent clients before. The Department of Treasury administers rules of conduct and a code of ethics that licensed EAs have a duty to follow. That’s why EAs are considered a cut above the rest.
