They’ve done website and mobile and iPad work, but just in terms of UI [user interface] for the different responsive systems. We haven’t developed a full-blown mobile app. The main work has been Web development – largely desktop.
What was your process for selecting Octal Info Solution with which to work?
We did a small Elance project initially. It was a discreet process. We approached some, and some approached us. We looked at a bunch of firms, and I actually went to India to visit with quite a few, and then we selected Octal after meeting with their team and management.
Going to meet them really made the difference for us. We did a test of their skills, and we engaged with them.

What advice would you give to future clients of theirs?
To spend more time up front on the exact features and thinking about the architecture of what you want as much as you can before you start. Then, to communicate that and make sure the team is on the same page and has a good understanding of the scope.
Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?
There were challenges to begin with. With any offshore team, they’re not aware of the business implications and, when we first started, it was hard work to establish procedures and communication.
We started with detailing, wireframing, and itemizing. The more work you can put into the front end of specifying exactly what you want, the more you get actually what you want. That speeds up the project. You can’t take your eye off the ball.

I think they do a good job of ensuring that the project meets expectations. If there are bugs that come up, they get them fixed. In large part, that’s why I stick with them. There’s not a new charge every time something comes up. They want to make sure the app meets my expectations.
What advice would you give to future clients of theirs?
I think this is something that holds true with working with any developer, but probably specifically a developer from India. Be specific with what you want. Don’t assume that they understand. They understand English fine, but be specific, and they’ll get it done.
Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?
When I started working with them, we were a brand new company. Now, we have a solid working relationship. I think it would have been having a better process management tool. Now, we use something called Trello. At first, we used Elance, and then we switched to Basecamp. Trello seems to work the best. I talk to them every day. Figuring out the process management piece earlier on would have been beneficial.

They seem like a serious company, but then when you ask for results, they're all deceptive.

Octal IT Solution could have listened to my feedback instead of manipulating the SRS.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
I don't recommend working with Octal IT Solution. We hired them to develop a digital editorial platform with a defined scope outlined in an SRS document. The final payment was conditional on delivering 100% of the platform, and we're still waiting for them to complete it. Our experience has been very negative, and we wouldn't hire them again.During the project, we noticed discrepancies between versions of the SRS. They omitted or downgraded requirements subtly without a clear change control process validated by us. This affected the actual scope of the delivery.When we requested functionalities we thought were included in the initial SRS, they were often treated as additional work. A clear example was a panel/module for advertising, which ended up being an extra that cost €3,000 (approximately $3,200 USD). This approach created a situation where they reduced the scope and then asked for more money to recover functionalities.As of the closing date, there were still basic aspects missing or malfunctioning, such as basic statistics (minimum metrics needed to manage an editorial platform) and duplicate content loading, which caused confusion and double work.We asked for a checklist to close the project objectively, but they refused to complete it or respond point by point. Additionally, we've been waiting for a formal presentation and validation of the platform for about four months. The team hasn't shown progress continuously, and when they present something that doesn't fit, they tell us we must pay to adjust it.
