    First, I look at what went well and what didn’t go well from previous campaigns. Next, I define the value proposition and unique selling points (what’s unique to the product/company), and then the target audience (pain points and their hopes). I’ll write out the messaging, taglines, and gather testimonials that support it. Finally, I’ll turn it into a one-pager and send it out to the appropriate people.

    First, I put myself in their shoes and use their language. I do this usually by going to online forums and groups and seeing how they talk about their issues, hopes, and goals. Then I take the product capability and turn it into a clear outcome. For HumanGO, when we released HumanGO 2.0, I focused on how simple the training week had become. It had a drag-and-drop, and their workouts changed based on what they did the day before. It became a lot less manual to edit their training, which freed up their time, which is what they wanted. I’ll check in with customer support or track how our ambassadors are talking about the product to validate or refine my messaging.

    For HumanGO, I started noticing that other AI coaching platforms were using “smart” in their sales copy, a really overused term for AI. They’d use phrases like “train smarter, not harder,” but that completely misses the mark. Athletes want to train hard. They don’t want to train aimlessly. I didn’t want HumanGO to sound the same as the others, so we stopped using “smart” in our copy and instead, I described what it is: “state-of-the-art AI,” “expert-level coaching,” “deep sports science knowledge,” and “personalized and adaptive training.”

    We kept hearing how users felt lost after sign-up, but that was pretty vague. So, I worked with Coaches, Customer Support, and Product to learn exactly where people were getting lost in the onboarding process. Then I worked with the coaches and customer support closer to develop an educational and confidence-building email sequence targeted to athletes with varying levels of training experience, so we could meet them where they were at. We went from 8% of free trial users becoming paid subscribers to 21% becoming paid subscribers.
