Please describe your organization and what you do there.

We are a new startup that has a management team experienced in the development of other Saas Products. I am one of the founding members of the Phox App which is a photo management application designed to streamline the process handling, sorting, and sharing photos within your business.

What challenge were you trying to address with Master of Code Global?

We had an idea for an online application that had both a web component and an Android and iOS app. Our staff here was not equipped. We needed to hire outside resources for the technical end of the project.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They were responsible for delivering the first versions of the iOS, Android, and web versions of the application. They had a project manager, as well as their development team on the project. At times they brought in a designer to help with some of the mockups and some of the user interface and user experience components. The app is a photo management application geared towards business and enterprise level users. It’s an app that’s built to bridge the gap between field employees and office admins. Then the field staff uses the application to take the photographs, they’re automatically tagged into categories in the cloud where the office staff can access them.

For the web app, Ruby on Rails is the language used and then it’s also a single page JavaScript application. They didn’t do the marketing or launch strategy side of the project, but they did help to get it submitted to the iOS store and Google Play store and setting up the developer accounts.

As far actual business end of things, they aren’t involved in that. We’re in a beta phase with the project right now. They’re still involved with working out some of the feedback from the beta users. They are making some adjustments before we go fully live with the product.

How did you come to work with Master of Code Global?

I had a colleague in another business that had used them for a project and recommended that we talk to them.  When we were interviewing, we had a pretty well-established set of mockups and proof of concept as to what we were trying to accomplish. Master of Code Global was provided with that.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them about 6 to 8 months ago and we continue to work with them.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We’ve closed the app down to a 1,000 user beta group based on our team’s decision. The app performs and does everything it’s supposed to do. The marketing team is taking over the launch process. The app is performing well. As with any software application, there are bugs or use cases that are overlooked by the development team and the product team. That’s the norm with every software project that I’ve done. The feedback has been good. Any feedback hasn’t been related to technical issues. It’s maybe an oversight in how we thought users would be using the products, and we can read how some of the flows go. From Master of Code Global’s end of things, they’ve implemented what we’ve asked.

How did Master of Code Global perform from a project management standpoint?

They always had a dedicated Project Manager. It changed one time throughout the project to another individual. That person got up to speed really quick and didn’t really experience much lag in the personnel change. That person has always been easy to communicate with and easy to get a hold of. They’re based in a different time zone than we are, but they were always accommodating to our time zone. At times they were well outside their regular work hours. They would make themselves regularly available. That made it a lot easier for us.

What did you find most impressive about Master of Code Global?

If there was a scenario that came up that needed discussion, they usually bring a few solutions to the table rather than just the issue. They already put some thought into how to solve the problem and then it was them presenting the very solutions, the time associated with each solution, and which one they recommended, which was nice to have in the project. It showed they wanted to speed things along. Rather than just showing you the problem, they also showed you how you can solve it.

Are there any areas Master of Code Global could improve?

Things were good. They’re based in the Ukraine. We’re based in North America. English isn’t their first language, but their verbal and written communication was easy to understand. There weren’t really any issues there. I don’t have anything negative to say. At times, the if owner of the business, Demetri [Owner, Master of Code Global], needed to get involved to make some decisions because he’s been around the product space a bit longer, he would get involved. If things needed to escalate above the team that they have there, they were willing to put more resources on it to get it done.

TrapTap is a consumer electronics IoT [Internet of Things] manufacturer providing hardware devices that sit on a vehicle's dash, making for smarter and safer drivers. We have been around for just over a year. I am the CEO of the company.

What challenge were you trying to address with Master of Code Global?

We needed assistance with Android and backend development. We had scaled quickly within our first year and needed to strengthen our backend, especially when it came to the Android issues we had experienced.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Master of Code Global has provided a lot of onboarding and controlled-environment testing for our internally-developed software. Master of Code Global has provided testing for multiple Android devices and in many different environments. Aside from the testing work, Master of Code Global has provided Android development. We lacked expertise in that area, but their team is phenomenal. Master of Code Global has also helped with customer issues and tickets around non-functioning software and bugs.

Our app has third-party integrations, and it's data-heavy on the backend. Master of Code Global has been great at helping us scale that, especially when collecting user-generated driving reports and processing them.

Our engineering and marketing teams have dealt with Master of Code Global. They've provided 8 developers and 2 customer service representatives relaying communication to our team. Master of Code Global also has a design team on its end for the frontend of our website.

I had heard of Master of Code Global's reputation around backend support and development. I met their principal through our community in Winnipeg. My business partner also knew about them and recommended Master of Code Global's team. We went through our due diligence and reviewed their past work. We had a meeting with Master of Code Global, gave them an initial project, and evolved the collaboration to an ongoing process.

We started working with Master of Code Global 8 months ago. The work is completely ongoing.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

Master of Code Global's work has allowed us to sell 6,000 units of our product. Only around 100 of these had any issues, which were unrelated to Master of Code Global's work. They were helpful in the debugging and diagnostics process.

How did Master of Code Global perform from a project management standpoint?

Communication was clear and detail oriented. Master of Code Global has had quick responses and made improvement suggestions for our project.

What did you find most impressive about Master of Code Global?

Master of Code Global's work is competitively priced, but they're also experts in their field. They understood our requirements without me having to explain every little process to get to a result. I can tell Master of Code Global's team what needs to get done and see it happen.

Are there any areas Master of Code Global could improve?

Master of Code Global is based in Ukraine, and it has made things difficult at times, but I don't have much to say in terms of improvements. I don't work closely with Master of Code Global, but my team hasn't had any complaints so far.

What business challenge were you trying to address with Master of Code Global?

Master of Code was involved from the very beginning of WOVIN.org. We've been around for almost two years. I worked with them to do a prototype and MVP [minimum viable product] of our platform. We went to market, it was successful and, since then, they've done two or three updates and iterations on the website.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

Starting with the MVP, Master of Code did the initial design. I worked with them and had some ideas, but they did the design, user interface, and then programmed it. That was integrated with some email systems. From there, we added more integrations to make it more like an enterprise system.

We did a back-end administration dashboard. They tied that into one of our other service providers and then they automated the customer request process. Before, the MVP had a lot of manual processing.

We've switched from being hosted and working with Parse, which Facebook discontinued, and now we're running fully on a Ruby system that they created hosted by ourselves.

How did you come to work with Master of Code Global?

I live in the Bay area. I have a friend here that does app developments for startup companies, and I asked him who he recommended, and his number one pick was Master of Code. I reached out to them. Everything seemed good. I started working with them, and I've had a good experience with them since.

It cost between $10,000 and $50,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

At the moment, I'm still working with them.

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

In terms of tracking success, Master of Code has been with us from the start, so I can attribute everything to them or nothing to them. They implemented my vision. They helped us figure out the best technical solution and proposed ideas on best practices. In terms of the site, its up time, and functionality, Master of Code is accessible easily and readily available to fix those bugs. They do it quickly to minimize impact on the business, and I've been very happy with them. The site has never gone down. I've never had any major issues outside of the bug tracking phases of the projects.

How did Master of Code Global perform from a project management standpoint?

My first couple of interactions with them, the project management was not great. They have since let that project manager go, and the new project manager I've been working with, Roman [Bilusiak, IT manager at Master of Code], is very good. He follows up, follows through, and he's organize. I'm now happy with the service. They assign a project manager to you, so you are always communicating with the same person.

What distinguishes Master of Code Global from other providers?

Their price is great for what they do, and they follow up. When Master of Code say that they're going to do something, they honor that. I've had a couple of cases with them where they've gone above in terms of hours on a project, but we had agreed that there was going to be a cap, and they honor that cap. When they say they're going to do something, they do it. For me personally, I feel like I have a development team ready and available whenever I need them, even though they're an outsourced contractor. For me, having a website and running a tech-enabled business is very helpful in keeping costs down and stuff. To me, that's a big plus.

Is there anything Master of Code Global could have improved or done differently?

The products and the projects are successful. I don't think they could be more successful than they are.

We've partnered with Master of Code on many different projects, generally mobile app development projects. They supplement our internal team.

For our first project, Master of Code helped us with front-end mobile development. We had built internally APIs [application programming interfaces] and the back-end infrastructure, and they did the entire mobile front-end piece. They have build iPhone and iPad applications for us. More recently, they've worked on end-to-end mobile development and even Apple Watch applications.

How did you come to work with Master of Code?

I know their American president. He's in Denver where I'm based, and that's how I came to find out about those guys.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

All of the projects combined have cost between $50,000 and $200,000. If I had to guess, we've done about $150,000 worth of work with them in the last couple years.

What is the status of this engagement?

It's ongoing.

How did Master of Code perform from a project management standpoint?

Master of Code is a great outsource development firm. We've had no issues with them. They're affordable, extremely talented, knowledgeable, and they run a tight ship. They've got a great hierarchy of project managers and developers. I feel like they don't sleep because you can call them day or night.

I guess the best metric to use is the fact that I'm still using them on other projects. I've been in the software world a long time with many different developers and development firms. I think they're good at solving problems. I like working with them a lot.

What distinguishes Master of Code from other providers?

We've tried to outsource development in other countries before, and it can be challenging. The benefit is the cost but many times, you don't get to realize any benefit of the cost because it takes you way longer just to be able to get projects done.

I appreciate Master of Code because they take that piece out of it. It doesn't feel like you're working with an overseas firm from my standpoint. It feels like you're working with a local group. I like the fact that I know that they're going to get it done. We've never had issues. We've never had problems.

Is there anything Master of Code could have improved or done differently?

No. I don't think there's anything they can improve upon. The difference between us is we're in the space, and we just use them as a resource. We understand the projects and everything. I think they do exactly what they say they're going to do, and I can't think of any issues or problems I've had.

I needed to find software developers to help us. We were looking for somebody to come onboard and help us build out our mobile apps.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

Master of Code developed our iOS and Android apps for us. We gave them the design of the app, and they were involved in the development process. Then, they supported us on the launch of these apps. They also ended up taking over some front-end WordPress development on our main website.

How did you come to work with Master of Code?

Their head of sales lives in my neighborhood. I was connected to Master of Code through him, and then we just set up an arrangement to work directly with them. I've had an engagement manager that has been in the Ukraine who we worked with directly, and then they assembled the team. We've now created an arrangement where we can communicate and work directly with the team working on our project, which has been great.

What is the status of this engagement?

We are still working with them.

The apps work great. I've worked with many different offshore companies and offshore teams, and Master of Code is one of the best I've worked with.

We did the majority of the project management. Master of Code was good about being responsive and meeting deadlines.

What distinguishes Master of Code from other providers?

The quality of their work is very good. Their work ethic is outstanding. They're a very ethical company. I don't have any issues with their billing. I think the competency of the team has been fantastic.

Is there anything Master of Code could have improved or done differently?

Not really.

FarmTrack is a web and mobile digital logbook for cattle farmers. We've designed a platform that allows cattle producers to track important data on their animals' health and performance as well as model that data that helped them make decisions about feed purchases and sale of animals.

I am the vice president of product development for FarmTrack Technologies.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What business challenge were you trying to address with Master of Code Global?

Our project started with Master of Code to develop the native iOS and Android applications – a digital logbook. We had a couple of challenges early on, and one of them was that cattle producers don't always operate in areas with good cell phone reception and Wi-Fi. We had to address the device being able to work offline and online and be able to save data, and do that in a very simple way.

The other challenge that we had that Master of Code work out was the user experience, the user interface design specifically, had to be extremely simple and yet the app has complex functionality. Producers are not tolerant of difficult UI, and they won't use products that are not extremely simple. We had to run a number of iterations on that and have certain code. Their team worked with us and some of our customers to help us through that process, so that ended up being a very important piece.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

We built a native iOS and Android, along with the web platform released in less than six months. In the early stages of the project, I was working with Master of Code's project managers, one of their architects and a couple of the engineers and designers. I was very integrated into the project.

For the most part, my purpose was to communicate our needs to the project managers, and help design the prototypes and get the requirement down. From there, their team managed almost all of our development, including being on a number of calls with customers to understand the product better.

It was relatively hands-off for us, which was important because when we engaged Master of Code at the start of the project, we were a three-man startup. We needed a development partner, so we could essentially just push things off to them and let them run with it, obviously within reason. We did that with Master of Code by dealing with one of their project managers, so that worked out well.

How did you come to work with Master of Code Global?

I found them through word of mouth. I'm located in Canada, and although Master of Code's presence is global, I had heard about the company and that I should consider talking to Dmitry [Gritsenko], who is the founder, about helping us out. What I really liked about Master of Code was that as a company and the individuals within the company, they seemed to have a lot of experience with launching products.

More so than just a development for service, or fee for service company, they've actually been involved in some very interesting projects. They had done some of their own, so they understand the development process from a startup, raising capital and all those other key important pieces that most companies probably don't consider or haven't experienced. That probably was what sealed it for me. Having guys on the other side of the table that had also been through what we're going through as a startup was a great asset for us.

What is the status of this engagement?

It's still ongoing. We'll be using Master of Code to manage the product and continue to enhance the product as we see fit.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

We have about 500 producers, so that's 500 users, but that's our closed beta program, a sort of restricted beta program. What we've heard from the producers has been good. We had to do a number of iterations early on, but it was largely fundamental like business model and stuff. Things we were changing as we started to get used to actually using the product.

We have our most recent version out there, and it seems to be very well received among the beta users. We're going to be going into the open market and just pushing for growth now in 2016, especially in the next few months so that's exciting. However, we're still pre-revenue. The mobile and web platform that Master of Code built for us is a piece of a bigger puzzle that involves some hardware that we have to build for monitoring animal sickness. That is being done as we speak, so I'll know more about that during the coming months.

We are in discussions with a potential large-scale industry investor or potentially an acquirer already. We're still very early so that's very interesting. Much of that acquisition discussion was driven from how fast we were able to develop and move as a small startup. That company, that investor, is well aware of Master of Code's involvement with us, and they're very happy with that. Other than that, I can't really talk too much about that deal structure or that deal specifically. With the speed at which Master of Code helped, helped us lock down this potential investor so that's good.

How did Master of Code Global perform from a project management and quality of work standpoint?

The process in dealing with Abell and a few of the others at Master of Code has been exceptional. There is a bit of a time issue because we're in Canada, and they seem to be always available. We have issues that come up with usage and things like that. When I'm getting responses, I'm getting it directly from a project manager. I'm not having to go through levels of customer service or technical support or things like that. That's been good.

I think, overall, the process and dealing with project managers at Master of Code has definitely been exceptional and what I would believe to be the standard.

What distinguishes Master of Code Global from other providers?

From a quality of work perspective, I think we received an amazing product from Master of Code. We haven't had any issues with the product, other than iterating on modeling things. That's been great. We haven't seen this project through to scale yet, but one of the best things about Master of Code is they've dealt with some very big projects that have scaled. We had a lot of confidence in them in having architect responsibility for this one. I would say the product itself has been great.

Is there anything Master of Code Global could have improved or done differently?

I'm not sure. I think in our particular case, this is my first project like this, and we came to them with very little by way of thought-out requirements and things like that. As a project, we were probably much more difficult than they're typical project, we'll say. We're moving extremely quickly, and we were handing them very little to work with in terms of validated requirements and design ideas and wireframes and things like that.

Overall, we had so early hiccups ironing out the wireframes, but that's largely due to end, being unprepared to move at that pace. Other than that, I can't say that we ran into any issues, so I'm not sure I would really want to change much.

Master of Code did a variety of projects for us. They worked on server configuration, web design and development, and front-end coding for mobile applications. They also managed upgrades on email servers and implemented different cloud computing technologies like Amazon Web Services and DigitalOcean.

A friend of mine is their regional vice president for North America. He introduced me to them directly.

The one thing that stood out to me with Master of Code was the thoroughness of what they did. They sometimes took longer than I hoped in terms of responding to me, but their work was thorough, and they double checked themselves.

They could be more available. We talked every two or three days. I wish we could have talked to them every day. That was the only negative thing. I understand that time zones and the workloads vary.
