Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am the program director for human rights monitoring for the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN). BIRN  is a media organization that covers the Balkans. We cover unreported stories, and through our story initiative and projects, we are trying to make the work of the governments more transparent. We also focus on covering digital rights.

What challenge were you trying to address with Kutia Software Company?

I started to work with Kutia on our investigative reporting deck, which is one of our most important projects.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Kutia Software Company developed the whole website and platform for us from scratch. It is an interactive and innovative platform that was created for journalists who want to keep up to date with the fast-changing role of technology without sacrificing their ethics or standards of professional journalism.

Since BIRN provides journalists with various types of assistance and sets of tools, we also wanted to somehow, through this initiative and platform, recognize the open global nature of the online arena that empowers journalists to use open sources and databases that are available online which actually have shown to be very useful during COVID-19 time.

Within the platform, there are many different resources for journalists, from how to’s, to publications that can be useful for their work, or different tools they can use during their investigating work, cybersecurity tips, data sources, and we also have a big opportunity section where we are basically collecting funding, grants, or training and conference opportunities for journalists around the globe where they can apply. It is literally a resource platform. 

Additionally, because we were very satisfied with the cooperation with Kutia Software Company, we gave them the task to redesign and redevelop our monitoring platform which is a platform where we collect cases. It is a big database for six countries with a regional overview as well where we collect cases of digital and freedom violations in six countries and in Eastern Europe. The countries that the platform covers are Bosnia, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia. Kutia helped us completely redesign the platform and create the functionality.

Currently, we are working on a third project with them which will be a platform where journalists, especially those who attend BIRN seminars and others, will have their own profiles. This platform will serve for journalists to basically handle the networking among the journalists in the regions that we are covering but also to enable them to communicate in a safe environment.

What is the team composition?

We worked with four to five members of the Kutia Software Company team. I worked with one of the coordinators within the team, but she left at some point. I also worked with the director of Kutia Software Company and the main developer who was super amazing.

I also worked with someone on the monitoring process. In general, after our successful cooperation, BIRN wants to transfer all of our websites to Kutia Software Company for them to maintain them and basically be our service provider for any bugs that pop up.

How did you come to work with Kutia Software Company?

We decided to work with them because our local brand works with them and we've heard so many good things about their work. We decided to collaborate with them because they are affordable, responsive, and professional. Everything they do looks really nice.

We had many problems with different developers in the past, especially with freelancers and individual developers so we decided to hire a company that basically deals with this type of thing. As we are a media organization, the functionality of our website is one of the most important requirements. We needed developers to be accessible to us sometimes all the time.

How much have you invested in them?

We have invested over €10,000 Euros (approximately $12,000).

What is the status of this engagement?

We started collaborating with them in the summer of 2019, and the work is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We are more than happy with their work. Everything was timely and functional and it was an easy-going process. When you are developing a platform there are a lot of unpredictable things that pop up during the process itself, but usually, the people who I was working with were super responsive and super friendly, and as BIRN is a media organization, we have lots of work and the stress is a part of our daily job. When we are launching something like this, it is extremely stressful because we have to keep up with our standards and the quality that we set up for ourselves in general and the expectations are really high. We didn’t have any problems in the process and the people from Kutia Software Company were very responsive.

When we were working on the monitoring section, part of the team didn’t know how to work with this as it was something we gave to them to reshape and enhance. Kutia Software Company had to hire external associates or developers who know how to work with this system in general. It was literally in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis when we were on lockdown. That was the only time when we had some delays because part of their team got sick so there were certain circumstances that took place during the project, but now, in general, everything has been fixed and it is functioning perfectly.

How did Kutia Software Company perform from a project management standpoint?

They were very prompt, and they met all the deadlines that we gave them but sometimes BIRN changed the deadlines. Usually, we postponed things a lot because we are always trying to think about the proper context and timing for launching our new product in a way, but Kutia was always on time.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their human-based approach sets them apart. Sometimes when I talk to developers because I am not a developer myself, I have problems with communicating with them because I cannot use the exact professional development words for things that I want to be done for example.

With Kutia Software Company it was different because they were super dedicated to us in general and they are really proactive in giving suggestions and where something can be improved. If they know something that I have imagined will not function in reality, they will usually let me know and will give me advice. They are very supportive in the process.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I hope that their team will grow as they grow in general, but for now, I think they are on a good path.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Share a broader purpose of the work you do. That is something that can be extremely helpful if the developer understands what you want to achieve in general and that is how you are opening this process to make it more open, and that is how you create space for very useful advice and comments from Kutia’s side. I would advise having a good vision of what you want.
