They had the right team mix (not too big and not too small) and delivered on project milestone timelines.

Not really. As Do Good Things keep doing great work and builds their client base, there is a chance the personal attention and contact will reduce. I know this is something Ryan is mindful of though. Their team didn't want to treat us like a number, just as some big agencies would have done.

I’m part owner and CEO of Wine Central Limited, an online retailer and distributor of wine, beer, and spirits in New Zealand.

What challenge were you trying to address with Do Good Things?

A number of years ago, we were looking to spend some money on Google advertising. We hadn’t done much and what we had done, we did in-house semi-successfully. We knew we weren’t achieving what we could with Google AdWords and Facebook because we didn’t have the time and expertise. I decided to find a vendor to do it.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They’ve helped with Google AdWords and helped us focus more on retention. When COVID-19 hit, we pretty quickly realized that the bulk of New Zealand was online searching for where they could buy alcohol because all the physical stores had been forced to shut down. We were one of only several online sites that sold wine, beer, and spirits. We got them to run a project for us starting at the end of March that ran through most of April and part of May where we got focused on some high ROAS campaigns for existing companies as well as to gain a bunch of new customers.

We were keen to utilize Facebook. We got him to generate some Facebook funnels for us to develop bigger exposure online to the key products that we wanted to promote.

They also worked on putting together a completely new website platform for us. They organized wireframes and the design of the new website, talked with us about what we’re trying to achieve in terms of conversions on the site and the look and feel that we wanted. They came back with wireframes and designs that we discussed and approved. We have our own development team that’s contracted and we get them to liaise with us so that he can make certain the wireframes and designs are implemented correctly. That has been successful. We’re in the last couple of weeks of all of that being coded and hopefully, we’ll be rolling out our new website.

I always interact with Ryan (Founder & Director) and he deals with the various members of his team to get things done.

How did you come to work with Do Good Things?

I found them through a Google search. The bonus for me is his office was within a couple of kilometers of me. I looked at the projects he’d done and they looked right up the alley of what we were looking for. I met him and instantly liked him. He exudes confidence. He immediately gives you the sense he knows what he’s talking about.

We’ve spent under $100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in July 2016, and the work is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The campaign was hugely successful for us. He did the whole project for us. We had some specific ROAS requirements. He managed to get a ROAS of over 24 for us. We went from spending $2,000-$3,000/month to $30,000 in that month and got some great results from it. We were very pleased with the work that Ryan did around paid media. He continues to do that. We've since dropped the budget because we were just swamped with business. We took on 14,000 new customers in April, and we generated more revenue that month than we did all of last year. The Facebook campaigns we ran were very successful. 

The other thing I like about Ryan is he’s a good communicator. He’s straightforward, and he will tell you if you’re doing something wrong. It’s really useful for me to have somebody I can trust to be very objective about what we’re trying to achieve. Sometimes our expectations are probably a bit optimistic and he will try and temper those somewhat. 

They’re a really great company to work with. I couldn’t recommend them more highly. We continue the amount of work we give them because we trust them.

How did Do Good Things perform from a project management standpoint?

During the peak of our engagement, Ryan would communicate with us pretty much every week. We planned our future campaigns and made sure we had the appropriate content. Ryan is attentive to detail. The project management is very good. He’s on top of everything and keeps records of his work. I’m very pleased.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They understand what I’m trying to achieve and what I like and don’t like. Ryan is an expert in his field. In the last 10 years, I have dealt with a huge number of tech companies. You get to know how much the people you’re speaking to really know about their topic. Ryan knows what he’s talking about. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

It’s always good to try and figure out what you could do better. If I had to search hard for criticism, the only thing I would say is that Ryan is so good at what he does, I’m concerned that he will have less time for us if he takes on more customers. It’s more of a selfish concern than anything else. He’s good with his time though. He’s a very hard worker. I’m pretty confident he’ll always look after us.

If you’re going to employ consultants of any sort, make sure that they clearly demonstrate they know a lot more about the topic at hand than you do. Once you’re convinced they do, trust them. Do what they say.

Our goals were to get more projects in for the business to increase the overall revenue. To achieve this, we had to compete against large players in the industry and Do Good Things helped us position ourselves in a way that saw us achieve massive results month over month.

We have a history of working with Do Good Things and have never been let down by the results that have been delivered. Initially, we were drawn to the positivity and confidence that we could succeed with PPC campaigns. Subsequently, we stuck around because the results never failed us.

When we commenced the project, we had a short discovery and strategy call to ensure we were all aligned on the same mission. After this call, Do Good Things proceeded to develop a simple yet effective strategy across Google Ad, Facebook and Instagram. We worked together on producing the creative and used A/B testing to keep our CTR and conversion rates high.

I worked closely with the owner of Do Good Things who managed the project. I’m not sure how many other team members are involved.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Once we started, Do Good Things spent the first couple of weeks optimising the campaign providing us with lower and lower CPA’s each time. Our conversion rate settled between 6 and 10% with an average ROI of 25x on our ad spend over the last 6 months.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

The overall performance delivered by Do Good Things was perfect. We had open communication and scheduling through Slack and were provided with suggestions on what could be done to achieve even more growth.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Do Good Things are incredibly knowledgeable and are able to provide suggestions on-the-fly to multiple facets of business - not limited to PPC.

We had no issues with any aspect of the engagement and aren't able to provide any critical feedback on areas that require improvement.

What challenge were you trying to address with Do Good Things?

We were looking to completely overhaul our website—everything from copywriting, design, and imagery to SEO.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Do Good Things redeveloped our website from scratch. They created custom code for our Craft CMS. Anyone at our company can edit the website easily.

One challenge was to maintain the great SEO our former website had built up over the many years it had existed. Do Good Things implemented a plug-in that ensured we’d continue to show up on Google for various searches.

What is the team composition?

We mainly worked with Ryan (Director). He brought in developers and copywriters that supported the process, but he was our main point of contact and the main developer and designer of the site.

Our founder and managing director had worked with Ryan for many years, across different businesses. It was a no-brainer to work with Do Good Things. Ryan is obviously very smart and good at what he does, and he always delivers to the exact requirements of the project.

I’m not sure what the cost is, but I’d imagine it’s been $30,000–$50,000 over time.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Do Good Things around May 2019, and the website went live in December of that year. The collaboration is ongoing for support, updates, content production, and further development.

Customers are using the site over time, and the user base is growing. The customer experience and user journey seem to be going quite well.

How did Do Good Things perform from a project management standpoint?

We have regular meetings, and we communicate a lot over email. We share documents through Google Docs, which allows us to edit and comment on things all at one time. Do Good Things gave us training once the CMS was implemented.  

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re easy to work with and have good communication. It’s a good, long-term, and trusting relationship.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Not at this time. I’m continuing to work with Ryan, and things are awesome.

They should be clear on what they’re after and what their budgets are, so that Do Good Things will know what they have to work with from the get go. With any project, it’s good to have clear objectives in mind and make sure we’re always working toward them.
