Executive Director, Durfee Foundation
- Industry: Other industries

- Client size: 1-10 Employees
- Review Type: Phone Interview
- Verified

**The Review** — Jul 8, 2022

**Feedback Summary**: Good Pictures' work boasts a lot of hits on YouTube. Transparent and organized, the team delivers on time and communicates issues and updates in a timely manner. Their ability to draw our critical information from the candidates and transform them into highly-engaging content stands out.
"“They’re highly communicative and transparent.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the executive director of Durfee Foundation, a grantmaking organization that supports nonprofits and leaders with grants and technical support.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Good Pictures?

We run a range of fellowships at the foundation that provide financial support to deeply knowledgeable, highly-networked, creative leaders who are well-positioned to tease out a solution to some challenges facing the future of LA.

We needed a company that could help us tell the story of the work that our fellows have been doing and, in essence, explain the nature of the fellowships to other people who may be interested in applying.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

We’ve engaged Good Pictures to produce film documentary-type videos that feature what our fellows are working on in an attempt to share their work and explain what a fellowship can do to facilitate or expedite the viewers’ works.

We started the engagement with a discussion about the video’s concept and the potential candidates we have in mind. For our projects, we generally give them a timeframe of how long the videos need to be, but our parameters and goals have been pretty broad. After we provide the requirements, the team then designs the whole production, writes the interview questions, and conducts the interviews. They also take all of the footage and B-roll and handle all of the post-production work.

What is the team composition?

I’ve only worked with Andy (Founder & Director).

How did you come to work with Good Pictures?

Andy was referred to us by a colleague of one of our former fellows who ran an organization for which Andy had done similar work.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent somewhere between $60,000–$70,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in January 2015, and the engagement is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The videos that we've put on our website have a lot of hits. They're also posted on YouTube, and they also have a lot of views on YouTube.

In terms of the quality of the videos, Good Pictures continues to exceed our expectations. They’ve been able to draw out more and assemble more than we had ever imagined.

How did Good Pictures perform from a project management standpoint?

Good Pictures has performed well in terms of project management. They’re always on time and within budget. They’re highly communicative and transparent — they let us know in advance if there are any potential changes to the timeline or budget, if they’ve run into any kind of technical question and want clarification, or if they’ve had to reschedule with one of the interview candidates.

We communicate through email and phone calls. We also use Google Docs and Asana for project management.

What did you find most impressive about them?

What distinguishes Good Pictures from other comparable companies that I’ve worked with is their ability to put folks at ease and draw out the most eloquent statements from them. They are always able to make the interviewees feel like they’re just conversing with an old friend. They are an amazing reader of people, and they have an unusually high level of empathy, which makes them incredibly easy to work with.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Make sure to be clear about what it is you hope to get from the engagement.

For what projects/services did your company hire Good Pictures, and what were your goals?

Long-form PSA to create awareness around our issue (sexual abuse and assault of men).

**SOLUTION**
How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

Good Pictures came with outstanding endorsements/recommendations and has a reputation for being both creative and easy to work with, around difficult issues.

Describe the video(s) and the process in detail, including the project steps and all stages of production.

Good Pictures was awarded the contract and then conceived of, wrote and produced the long-form PSA, soup to nuts, a to z. I could not have been more pleased with their involvement from start to finish.

Who did you work with and what was the feedback process like?

Worked with Good Pictures founder and CEO, Andy.

The end product was more than we could have hoped for, delivered on time and on budget. To date the PSA has had over 4 million views. We could not be more pleased.

Good Company's project management style is inclusive, positive and very 'can do'. No corners were cut and we were kept in the loop during the entire process. They worked within an established budget and delivered an exceptional product.

Good Pictures showed a keen interest in the issue before starting work on the project, allowing them to fully understand the end goal. We felt like we were partners, not clients, on this project.

**The Review** — Apr 26, 2022

**Feedback Summary**: Viewers responded positively to the videos' top-notch quality and effectiveness in terms of actually achieving the client's goals. Good Pictures leveraged their creativity to help the client enhance their ideas and further elevate the final videos. They were responsive, flexible, and accommodating.
"“Good Pictures’ creativity definitely stood out.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m an associate professor at the University of Southern California

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Good Pictures?

As part of our research, we develop brief interventions to help young adults and veterans with substance use and mental health issues. A lot of those interventions have been developed and tested, and they’re usually in person, where there's a therapist helping participants out or a group they can participate in.

Recently, we've started to take some of the most effective programs that function well in person and apply them to online formats in a self-help kind of approach. We were interested in using videos to help convey a strong message and help individuals that were interested in seeking more formal care for their mental health and substance use issues, so we decided to look for a company that could help us with this initiative.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

We hired Good Pictures to produce various kinds of videos for our initiative. Their responsibilities included scouting and hiring actors and participants for our videos, filming footage, scouting locations, bringing all the necessary equipment, and handling all pre- and post-production work. They’ve done close captions for us as well.

The first project and second projects that we had done were focused on student testimonials. We were trying to help students drink more responsibly. Good Pictures delivered around 25 30-second to two-minute snippets for the first project.

The most recent project involved actors, who were both veterans. Good Pictures helped us with the script and found a site where we could film. For this specific project, they delivered around 20 10–30 second videos. These videos were then plugged into the program that we've developed online with another vendor where participants go through and learn about mental health symptoms as well as the options they have to seek help.

What is the team composition?

I primarily worked with Andy (Founder & Director) and the four other people on his team.

How did you come to work with Good Pictures?

Andy was a student at the university that I worked at before. When we were looking for somebody to help us with these videos, he was referred by another professor there.

We are funded by the National Institutes of Health to do these research studies, so we don't have a very big budget at all. Good Pictures was a good fit for us because of their cost-effective pricing. They’re also really easy to work with and really helpful in terms of helping us set expectations for what we could do within the budget that we had.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around $30,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from April 2017–February 2022. We’d already finished the most recent project, but we will definitely work together again in the future. They would be our go-to vendor once we are able to secure more funding to do some more projects.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We've put the videos into a larger program that our participants watch and complete. Participants have responded positively to the quality and helpfulness of the videos.

How did Good Pictures perform from a project management standpoint?

Good Pictures did a great job in terms of project management. They gave us a quote and stuck with it. They also stuck with the established deadlines and made everything incredibly easy for us.

We typically communicated through email and phone calls.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Good Pictures’ creativity definitely stood out. We came to them with a script, and they went above and beyond by reviewing it and giving us some feedback. They even modified some parts of it to further elevate the videos.

Overall all, they were just very approachable and easy to work with. I appreciated how they walked us through the entire process, especially because we had no idea how to actually implement our concepts and vision.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I can't think of anything that they would need to improve upon.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Make sure to be open to letting Andy and his team take a lot of creative liberties with your work.

### "CES: Relumino Mode" | Samsung TV
The delightful team at BBH Singapore invited us to produce this announcement film, set to premiere at CES just a few weeks after our project start. ### "Introducing Office Intelligence"
After examining various online courses in the discovery phase of this project, it became clear that online course content itself is commonly under-supported by the storytelling approach and production value. Our work on this trailer—and the full courses—attempts to build a more dynamic educational experience for the viewer, facilitating increased comprehension and enjoyment. We leverage live action to establish a connection and develop trust with our audience, and we embrace 2D animation for illustrating—abstractly and literally—specific concepts, circumstances, and lessons.

### "Survivors" | Anti-sexual Violence PSA

A sincere thanks to the NFL and Viacom for their generous support of this project, as well as the survivors for bravely sharing their stories and the readers for responding with such compassion.
