We needed DreamingFish to pitch a concept, write a script, manage all of the production elements, including hiring actors, sourcing locations and planning the shoot days; and then deliver to us a final edited video. They also organised on set photography so that could also have static assets to use for campaigns alongside the video.

The video was launched on the IndyKite website and YouTube channel, where it has received 44k views. We had a great deal of anecdotal feedback that the video was well received, and its standout nature meant that it had a higher level of impact than we were anticipating.

I'm the head of marketing at Quadrent Limited, an asset leasing specialist and a lease accounting software provider servicing Australia and New Zealand.

What challenge were you trying to address with Dreaming Fish Productions Ltd?

We needed to create a video for our lease accounting software product called LOIS lease accounting. We used Dreaming Fish to produce an animated explainer and corporate video about six years ago. However, we needed to update and rebrand that video. We also wanted to include our new features and bring the video up to date with the current accounting world.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Dreaming Fish helped us revamp our animated corporate video, which included updating the script and the voiceover. The team also added product footage from a demo and rebranded it to match our company's style and colors. The final deliverable was a corporate explainer video about three and a half minutes long.

Initially, we provided Dreaming Fish with the scripts for the video, which we had updated using the script from the previous version. We also provided them with some footage of the product itself, which was basically a screen recording of someone doing a demo. We also provided them with our brand guidelines and logos. From there, their team created a storyboard based on the new script.

Dreaming Fish reused some of the animations from the previous video to create the new one, updating the branding. Then, they basically reworked the video to include all the elements and fit the script. When needed, they also redid some of the animations. Additionally, they provided the voiceover talent for the new script.

What is the team composition?

I worked with three teammates from Dreaming Fish, including the CEO, the account director, and the animator with whom I had one meeting.

How did you come to work with Dreaming Fish Productions Ltd?

When we initially engaged with Dreaming Fish, they had been recommended by another company. Although Quadrent had worked with them for that past project, I still got some quotes locally from companies in New Zealand. Nonetheless, Dreaming Fish was the cheapest quote, and they already had some of our animations ready, which would make the project easier and quicker.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around $9,000 NZD (approximately $5,500 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

We had our initial exploratory call with them in January 2024, and we finished the project in April 2024.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

This video serves as a brand awareness tool. We were very satisfied with the final product. Dreaming Fish met our brief, deadlines, and targets, and everyone on our team approved the video very quickly; there wasn't a lot of back and forth during the editing period, which was great.

How did Dreaming Fish Productions Ltd perform from a project management standpoint?

Dreaming Fish's management was very good. I'm based in New Zealand, and they're based in England. Thus, I was initially a bit skeptical about working with a company in England due to the massive 12-hour time zone difference, which would cause very early or very late meetings for either side.

I had worked with such a time zone difference before and knew it was hard. Still, Dreaming Fish made it very easy. They were very prompt with their updates and communication, stuck to the deadlines, and were clear about what they would deliver from the start of the project.

Moreover, they were flexible with our meetings, so they would sometimes take the late-night meeting, and we would take the late-night meeting other times. Overall, their approach was very smooth and helpful.

As for project management tools, Dreaming Fish used monday.com, so they updated the dashboards throughout the project and tagged me in them to get visibility. I received emails whenever this happened, so I then logged into monday.com to see updates on my comments. In addition to that, we had regular meetings every two weeks to catch up and discuss our needs.

What did you find most impressive about them?

This was my first animated video production project, so I don't have something to compare Dreaming Fish with. Still, it was great that they answered all my questions, no matter how silly. They helped me understand how storyboards and other elements get put together and were very patient in explaining the process.

Moreover, Dreaming Fish ensured that we didn't go too far down the process before I could back out and make changes, which was good. Moreover, they always provided prompt replies and communicated deadlines. When working with a 12-hour time difference, it's easy to lose a couple of days of work when people don't reply quickly. From my perspective, their responsiveness was impressive.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can't think of anything Dreaming Fish could have improved on. They delivered what we asked for.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

Ask a lot of questions because Dreaming Fish is very happy to answer them. I came into the project not having done an explainer video in the past, so I had a lot of questions. Still, the team took time to go through everything with me. Just ensure to ask all the questions you need to ask before moving to the next step. Moreover, make sure to know when you can still make changes and when you can't.

Dreaming Fish produced several videos for Oakleaf (a mental health charity) in 2023, and we could not recommend them more highly. This included a video about our counselling service, and a video with an individual sharing their personal story of mental ill-health and accessing Oakleaf's services.

The videos have inspired support for Oakleaf across a wide variety of stakeholders since launching them, such as individual donors, businesses and community groups. This includes prompting donations. They also highlighted what we offer to members of the public, while simultaneously breaking down the stigma of mental ill-health.
