Our Story

Birdcage Tech was founded by Craig Duffy after more than 15 years working across software, QA, automation and technical delivery. The business was created around a simple idea: technology should remove work, not create more of it. Craig works directly with clients to understand how their business operates, then designs bespoke software, automation and AI solutions that solve real operational problems without unnecessary complexity.

What Sets Us Apart

Founder-led, hands-on

You work directly with Craig from discovery through delivery. No layers of account management, no hand-offs, and no junior team learning your business halfway through the project.

Built around your business

We do not force businesses into a particular platform or off-the-shelf process. We understand how your team actually works, then build the software, automation or integration around that.

Practical, not over-engineered

We focus on solving the real operational problem with the simplest dependable solution. That might be a small automation, an integration between existing systems or a completely bespoke application.

Commonly Asked Questions

We usually start with an initial conversation, whether that is by phone, video call or in person. The aim at this stage is simply to understand the main pain points, how the business currently works, the systems being used and where problems or inefficiencies are occurring. From there, we normally move into a more detailed discovery session. This gives us the opportunity to understand the processes in more depth, the people involved, the tools and systems being used and what the business is ultimately trying to achieve. We then take that information away and look at the most appropriate ways to improve things. That might involve bespoke software, automation, AI, system integrations, better use of existing tools or a combination of several approaches. Sometimes an existing off-the-shelf product is actually the best solution, and if that is the case, we will say so. Once we have a clear recommendation, we put together a proposal outlining the suggested approach and what implementation would involve. The client can then decide whether they would like us to take it forward.

We keep communication professional but informal and adapt it to suit each client. Some clients prefer email updates, some use WhatsApp and others prefer occasional calls. We are happy to work in whichever way makes communication easiest for the people involved. Rather than overwhelming clients with constant updates, we focus on communicating when there is useful progress to share, when we need input or information, or when there is something tangible for the client to review. The aim is to keep clients properly informed and involved throughout the work without creating unnecessary project-management overhead.

Timelines are agreed on a case-by-case basis because the size and complexity of projects can vary considerably. A focused automation or integration may be relatively quick to implement, while a bespoke application or larger transformation project will naturally require more time. We first make sure we properly understand the requirement, dependencies and systems involved. From there, we can provide a realistic delivery plan rather than applying an arbitrary standard turnaround time to every project.

Usually not. In many businesses, the existing software already handles an important part of the operation and is deeply embedded in the way the team works. The issue is often that it does not quite do everything the business needs. In those situations, we look at how we can work with the existing system rather than immediately replacing it. That might mean integrating it with other platforms, automating processes around it, building additional functionality or creating bespoke tools that complement what is already there. There are also situations where replacing an existing off-the-shelf system with something more bespoke makes sense. Where that happens, we plan the transition carefully so the existing system can continue operating while the replacement is developed, tested and introduced. The goal is to avoid unnecessary disruption and make sure the business can continue operating throughout the changeover.

We work particularly well with visionary business owners, founders, CEOs and operational leaders who can see how they want their business to work better, even if they do not yet know exactly how to make that happen. Often, the starting point is an idea, a frustration or a process that someone knows could be significantly improved. Our role is to help turn that vision into something practical, working out whether the right answer is bespoke software, automation, AI, system integration, better use of existing tools or a combination of several approaches. We are particularly interested in projects involving repetitive administration, disconnected systems, spreadsheet-heavy processes, internal tools, client portals, integrations and bespoke applications. The common thread is that we enjoy taking a business problem or an ambitious idea and working out how technology can make it real in a practical, useful way.
