I'm the founder of TasteMatch, a company based in Bozeman, Montana. We provide a cooking app that we built and launched in the summer of 2023. This app is focused on ingredient pairing, helping people be more creative in the kitchen.

What challenge were you trying to address with Yellow?

I had designed and built a prototype for this app on my own, so I hired Yellow to do the app development work.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Yellow helped us develop our cooking app for the App Store and Google Play using Flutter and Firebase as the technology stack. Their development work included everything, from building the core app framework in Flutter, setting up the development environment, and developing the core app to helping me with design and post-launch support.

Yellow's post-launch work included multiple different app releases according to our launch cycle. One of the key pieces that they worked on was developing a subscription system with an in-app purchasing functionality.

I'm a very capable product development person, so before Yellow joined the project, I already had a concept for the technical architecture, as well as all the visuals of a prototype. Thus, we initially talked through the designs and specifications I had already created. Their team did a pretty comprehensive review of my requirements regarding the functionality and the technical architecture.

After that, we collaborated to make choices regarding the technology platform and the core functionality. We decided to use Flutter as the app's platform because I wanted to release this app for both iOS and Android, so that was the best solution. Moreover, we confirmed that Firebase was a good choice for the app's infrastructure.

During this process, we also talked about the API layer and the integration of a CMS. Then, we discussed the administrative side of the project, talking about how we would manage it in terms of issue tracking, daily stand-ups, and the team that would be involved. Overall, it was a pretty normal process. Once we got the proposal, we decided to proceed with the actual development project.

What is the team composition?

First, we started conversations with Mitya (Founder), whom I know very well. However, our actual main point of contact was the project manager, who was involved in the project throughout. His role was to be my primary contact with Yellow's engineering team and designers.

For the actual development work, we worked with two different mobile engineers: one focused on the UI components and the other on the backend functionality. We also worked with two different designers, who reviewed our existing prototype and design updates in Figma to determine layouts for specific pieces of the app.

How did you come to work with Yellow?

I've worked with Yellow for years on multiple different projects. The first time I worked with them, they did some app development work for another startup that I have in the travel space. Years later, I hired Yellow for another company and worked with them for several years. When I decided to fund this startup, I hired them again because I really like working with them. They're one of the best companies I've ever worked with.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around $60,000 with them.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Yellow on this project in January 2023. We focused on getting the app to market, which we launched in July 2023 — it was a relatively short time frame. After that, I continued working with Yellow for an additional six months.

The app was already live, and we had launched enough releases, so I decided to take a pause on the development work to preserve the budget. Since then, I've taken over the development myself because I'm also an engineer. Still, I'm currently talking with Mitya about a new phase of the project focused on some enhancements I want to make that are beyond my capabilities. I'll probably work again with them very soon.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Yellow was very helpful to me in terms of time and capabilities to get this app launched, which is why I hired them. This is a very niche app, and we don't have a huge budget for marketing, so we have fewer than 1,000 users right now. However, this has nothing to do with Yellow's work.

This app functions perfectly. It has zero bugs, performance issues, or security issues. Everything was developed incredibly well, and the code base was really well done, professional, clean, and easy to maintain. Yellow knew what they were doing.

How did Yellow perform from a project management standpoint?

Yellow delivered on time and on budget. Throughout the project, we had daily stand-ups and operated in an iterative environment. This approach included defining sprints and focusing on making progress. We talked through things during our stand-ups and dropped things out of the sprint cycle if they were taking a bit long.

Yellow also provided me with very solid feedback and suggestions for ways to do things, which I really appreciated. From a project management standpoint, everything was smooth as silk. As for collaboration tools, we used Google Meet, Jira, and Slack. They were with us every minute of the day over Slack. We also exchanged emails as necessary, although most of our conversations were over Slack.

Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

I would like to give a shout-out to Nikita (iOS Engineer). I've worked with him the longest, and he's a fantastic Flutter developer; one of the best I've worked with. Although I've worked with a lot of really good engineers, Nikita was great both in his technical capability and our daily collaboration. He and I had daily stand-ups to talk about current tasks and make decisions. Overall, he was a fantastic person to work with.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The fundamental part of this project was taking an idea, turning it into an app, launching it simultaneously for iOS and Android devices, and supporting update releases and enhancements, which Yellow did. Now, the app is live in the market and is doing what it was designed to do.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Although this might be subjective, I noticed a difference in aesthetics on the design side between our different cultures. I have a very particular design sense, so it was a bit tough for me to find designers within Yellow's team that matched what I wanted. Still, this isn't necessarily a criticism; I'm just a very particular person.

One of the challenges with design is trying to find someone who matches the same aesthetic sense. Although Yellow's designs might have been right about their choices in trying to reach a mass market, I wasn't trying to reach a mass market. I wanted to reach a more sophisticated and experienced cooking customer who knew their way around the kitchen. Most designers tend to think in terms of making things for a mass market, and that wasn't what I was looking for.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

The best way to do a project like this is by having someone on your team who knows what they're doing regarding project management and product design. You'll work most effectively with engineering groups when you're actively engaged in the process on a daily basis.

Therefore, you need to find a good team member who really understands the project and is disciplined enough to go through the day-to-day process. Other than that, let the engineers be the engineers. Write a feature, and they'll build it.

We wanted to create new, modern tools to allow our clients to connect with advisors. We were looking to rebuild our legacy shop system.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Yellow has developed our web-based application from scratch. They’ve helped us create a robust system with all the options we need and participated in the security development lifecycle (SDL) from the initial requirements. Yellow has created the wireframes and prototypes and used React, Node.js, Next.js, AWS Lambda, and Contentful for development.

The website allows our customers to connect with our advisors. Users can look for particular advisors in different categories, see or leave testimonials, and talk or chat with the advisors. The site is fully responsive, which means Yellow has built it for mobile and desktop.

The team includes a project manager, an architect, developers, QA specialists, and an automation engineer.

How did you come to work with Yellow?

We chose Yellow because they specialized in the type of applications we wanted. We worked with Twilio, an API-based provider. We attended a conference in San Francisco, and Yellow was one of the top lenders they recommended.

We don’t have on-site developers, so we rely on external consultants and resources. Yellow has provided a fully-engaged service; they participate in every meeting, and the results have been outstanding. Their developers are excellent on all levels, including the architect who helped design our complex system. Overall, the experience has been great.

Moreover, Yellow has had a significant impact on our company. The desktop application is very convenient. In the past, advisors wouldn’t use the app because the screen was too small, so it has helped increase our sales. We also didn’t have experience with this new technology, so Yellow has helped us take it to the next level.

How did Yellow perform from a project management standpoint?

They’ve delivered many times before the deadline. If one developer needs help, they have access to other resources within the company, so they’ve overcome every challenge. Yellow is always able to find a solution; we’re not stuck when we encounter problems. Moreover, we feel that they’re part of our company.

Communication is excellent; their English is amazing, so there’s no language barrier. Our project manager is always on top of things, and we use Jira to track tickets and leave comments.

Trust, knowledge, and professionalism are their three main impressive traits. Yellow has all the resources we need, and they’ve helped us narrow down our focus so we can deliver faster, which has helped us be more successful.

I’m an executive and lead developer for a sports technology startup; we work with around 600 teams globally. We build software and hardware to evaluate daily athlete performance and ability.

We had an opportunity to expand our market presence, but our team was relatively small, and we didn’t have the time to hire a team internally and figure out if they were the right fit. We engaged Yellow to supply us with a team that could help us build a proof of concept quickly so that we could gather market feedback. Our goal was to produce a proof of concept without disrupting our product lineup or shifting our internal focus.

When we began working with Yellow, we had a pretty solid idea of what we wanted and needed out of a proof of concept. We shared details regarding our market and our goals for the design and functionality of the product. Then, they interviewed me to gather more information about our end users, their job functions, and their concerns.

The Yellow team has been working on designing and building an application using Figma and Flutter. So far, they’ve built the wireframe, designed the UI, and developed multiple versions of the application. They’ve created workable mock-ups, which we’ve shared with our team and contacts within the market, and a code repository.

Working with Yellow has been great; we’ve been shocked at how quickly they’ve combined all the pieces to learn our market language. The team’s dedication to understanding our end users has translated into their work because they submitted an almost perfect design on the first try. Thanks to their efforts, we’ve been able to avoid significant rewrites. They’ve also been able to produce what we asked for without disrupting our product lineup or internal workflow.

Yellow has effectively managed our project via weekly check-in meetings where they’ve presented their work. We’ve been able to follow along with design and development progress via Figma and Flutter. The team has submitted deliverables on time and within budget estimates. Although they’ve typically gotten things right on the first try, they’ve been very flexible and receptive to feedback.

We hired Yellow to help us with our internal franchise software. We had an older internal system that we needed to upgrade with some new features. However, our team didn’t have the necessary development resources. As a result, we contracted Yellow to help us.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Yellow has worked on an existing API but rebuilt most of the product’s frontend from scratch. We’ve asked them to fix bugs and issues with our product. 

In terms of features, the product helps communicate different tasks from our call centers. The tasks are then given to our locations that handle billing problems, mobile apps, and estimation tools. For technologies, Yellow mainly uses React; our team uses PHP. 

At present, Yellow is rewriting a mobile app into a web app for us. The product is a service scheduler. Using it, the end users can track their jobs for the day and handle payments. They can add products while on the field, log their time, and record any problems while communicating their status to the main office.

Yellow has completed 6–7 projects for us; they work fast and with a decent QA time. If we find bugs, we create a ticket. The team is more than happy to take a look and work on it. They’re truly invested in the quality of their work. Overall, their outputs meet and exceed our expectations.

How did Yellow perform from a project management standpoint?

Our project management is amazing. We don’t usually experience any hold-ups, but if we do, the manager reaches out and answers our questions. Moreover, I truly like that he takes a look at the entire project and asks as many questions as he can at the beginning — he’s on top of everything. 

In terms of tools, we use Jira. We have stand-up calls and are on Slack together for fast communication. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

The quality of Yellow’s work is impressive. They ask the right questions — other people simply develop what they see and don’t look further than that. By contrast, the Yellow team comes to me with questions about things I haven’t even figured out. Their timeliness is also great. Overall, they have a great understanding of the problems that we’re facing and what we’re trying to deliver.

Set everything out. If you have a design that Yellow can follow or a clickable prototype where they can see what everything is supposed to do, that would be great. Giving them the design and functionality at the start allows them to do what they need to do without even asking.

I'm the former Chief Product Officer at a renowned outdoor media, lifestyle and ecommerce company based in the US.  Our company produces editorial, video and audio content for a large audience and also owns 3 direct-to-consumer outdoor brands.

Very soon asfter I started, I hired Yellow to rebuild our primary website.  Our goals were to overhaul and modernize the UX, increase performance at scale, improve SEO and enable efficient publishing of multiple content types including articles, recipes, podcasts, video series, events and more.  We were also focused on integrating ecommerce opportunities into the experience via editorially and algorithmically placed related products.

I had worked with Yellow on a small project previously, having been referred to them by a trusted friend.  I was impresed with their work, so when I started my new role, I knew I needed to replace the existing vendor, so I called Mitya at Yellow right away.  The main factors in choosing Yellow were reliability, quality of work, quality of people and cost.

The scope of work was a major rebuild of our primary website.  It involved migrating from a legacy Wordpress-based implementation to a custom, mobile-first Single Page App powered by Contentful CMS, integrated with FirebaseAuth, Brightcove, Omny, Klaviyo and Shopify and deployed via a Heroku CI pipelines.  The app features a Node.js API layer connected to MongoDB & ElasticSearch and a Nuxt/Vue.js front-end.

How many people from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

We had 3 people from Yellow on the team throughout the project, including a project manager, a full stack dev lead and a front-end dev specialist.  We augmented the Yellow team periodically with designers and QA resources as needed.  

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

The Yellow team delivered above and beyond expectations, both from a technical perspective and also by timeline.  Our major initial migration from Wordpress to Contentful was handled very smoothly, and we made substantial progress in both UX design and performance at the same time. 

We also reduced technical debt substantially and created an extensible foundation that has allowed us to deliver new features at speed over time and continues to this day.  The Yellow team's work has always been of the highest quality, as exemplified by our zero-bugs policy, which we have maintained now for more than a year.

Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.

The Yellow team is effectively an extension of our own team.  We have daily standups at 8:30AM every day (via Zoom), we use Jira for features and bug tracking, and Slack for communication.  Despite the time zone differnces, there has never been an issue.  The Yellow team handles releases (typically at 3AM our time), and always runs post-release QA. They are 100% reliable, and we never have to worry.     

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The most impressive thing about our collaboration with Yellow is how smoothly they've integrated with our team, despite the time zone differences and everything else.  I think that engineering is a universal language and as someone with a technical background, I've developed an immense respect for the people at Yellow, most notably their work-ethic and absolute commitment to quality.

They also did extensive research throughout the project. Their team would either use the components they had developed for other companies before we engaged with them or take open-source work and heavily customize it to meet our needs.

What is the team composition?

For Android, there were three developers, one architect, and two senior engineers. For iOS, there was one architect, two senior engineers, and one junior engineer. They also provide a project manager and QA engineer to perform daily QA work for both platforms.

How did you come to work with Yellow? 

A person in my network who had used them referred them to me. I made my initial contact with their CTO, and I asked for 2–3 resources to gauge their capacity. They provided me with exactly what I wanted, so I decided to go with them.

How much have you invested with them?

We've spent over $500,000 with them so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in November 2020, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Thanks to their work, I was able to triple my velocity; I'm now able to push features to market faster than I used to have. They also deliver good quality work, and the amount of code they produce is amazing.

How did Yellow perform from a project management standpoint?

They have one project manager who interfaces with me, and it’s been a breeze working with her because she’s on top of everything and patient — if there are defects, I don’t even have to tell her about it. After all, she's always monitoring. 

In terms of communication, we have a shared Slack channel, Zoom, Jira, Figma, G-Suite, and GitHub.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The correctness and eloquence of their source code make them stand out from their competitors. I like that they bring in an architect who lays the foundation and best practices. They’re also extremely solid, their processes are extremely good, and they’re always improving their quality. In addition to that, their team is always doing research and trying to better themselves, which is apparent in how few bugs they produce — they’re a very good company.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don’t have any complaints about their work. There’s a little bit of a language barrier, but I got used to it. The senior folks are a little more fluent in English than the others, and their written English is better than their spoken English.

In addition to that, the website work wasn’t as impressive as their mobile app work. When it comes to native platforms like Android and iOS and backend development, they have a stronger team than their web team.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be patient with communication, have an open mind, and let them provide you with a proof of concept — I gave them a small task to start with. Don’t just throw the sink at them; go slowly, establish a good rapport, and ensure your requirements are as detailed as possible.
