I’m a partner at The Maker Group. We’re a niche market consultancy firm that specializes in commercial negotiation training and consulting work. We help our clients be better negotiators and strike better deals.

What challenge were you trying to address with Whimsy Games?

We had a client request to build out an interactive video game of sorts to teach negotiation. They wanted a self-led virtual negotiation program that their people could go through to teach them skills about negotiation. We partner with Whimsy to help develop and build the game.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The game is built on the Unity platform, which allows them to not have to work from scratch.

It consists of four levels. In essence, you play a character in the game that has to make decisions as the game progresses. These decisions impact your score — the more appropriate your decision, the higher your score. We've used a gamification model to build the game so that individuals within our client organization can compete with each other on a scoreboard as they progress.

Even level also has a testing element — multiple-choice and true-or-false questions — as well as mini-games along the way. At the end of each level, players face a decision-tree negotiation.

What is the team composition?

We have about 5–6 people working on the project in total. There is a main project manager, a main developer, a backend developer, a frontend developer, a few QA resources, and then one other resource.

We were looking for a developer with Unity experience and found Whimsy Games on Upwork.

We’ve spent around $20,000–$22,000 on the game.

What is the status of this engagement?

We kicked off the project in November 2020, and we’re almost done. They’re just making some minor tweaks, so delivery is set for the end of April 2021.

How did Whimsy Games perform from a project management standpoint?

They were very good at meeting deadlines and communicating. Slack was sufficient for us, and they were generally available. They’re based in Ukraine and keep local hours, rather than North American hours as some other overseas firms do. That was the only slightly challenging aspect of our communication. We only had a few hours to communicate with them in our workday before they went offline until my night-time. It was never a problem, however.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We had a pretty descriptive game document built out at the beginning, so we know what we were looking for with a high degree of certainty. It came down to Whimsy Games to bring the concept to life, and they did a great job of that.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There was a bill for some extras down the stretch that we didn’t have a clear line-of-sight on, but that came from a few odds and ends that needed to be cleaned up. Perhaps a bit more clarity on those would be good.

We had an app which was live and it was working perfectly until we experienced some security issues and people started cheating. Or main target was to secure the app and then we decided whilst doing these changes, to make a few other big changes to better the app further.

SOLUTION

How did you select Whimsy Games and what were the deciding factors?

I interviewed over 20 agencies, Whimsy Games were one of the first to send me a proposal and my only regret is I didn't award them the project right away. Within 30 minutes they were able to diagnose the security issues in a way other agencies refused to/didn't know how to. This gave me confidence about their other abilities too.

The key thing was to fix security and then add a coin wallet system within the app as well as to fix bugs made by previous developers. I also asked them to help me get on to google play store, which the previous company could not do and they succeeded! This was huge and well worth selecting their company. Our app is made in Unity and we also needed a PHP developer for the backend system work.

5 /6 people worked on my project and they added me to their internal slack communication so I was aware what was happening at all times. Believe me, it gives you comfort to know what is happening at all times. We also had a trello board with the pending tasks clearly categorised.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

The app is beautiful and ready to be launched. We had a lot of interest in our pre-launch but with these new changes they have really set us up to take this to a whole new level.

Trello+Slack. We were always updated about what's happening and they successfully cooperated well with us, too. Tanya, Illya and Dmitry were the ones actively working day to day on this project and I thank them for their efforts and level of professionalism!

I have worked with so many agencies but by far Whimsy is my favourite. They make you feel glad to pass over your money to them, not the other way around. Their communication set up, for me, is a game changer and the reason why I would continue working with them for a long time.
