I’m the CEO of a social enterprise in the UK. We look into how to bring digital innovation into spatial planning practice.

What challenge were you trying to address with Unfold?

We got a sponsorship to develop a digital planning directory, which is a website that lists digital service providers in the UK. It’s almost like a Yellow Pages type of directory. We wanted to have a comprehensive understanding of how the service users and providers could benefit from the directory, so we commissioned Unfold to start a UX review and design.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Unfold has helped us with UX design, web design, and web development. For the design, we gave them some ideas and our likes and dislikes. The wireframes have been developed through the UX review research. We've worked together to determine what should be included in the directory, and from there, they've developed the website. They've used WordPress to build the website. The directory isn't yet launched, as it's open for company entries. The site is ready to be launched soon.

What is the team composition?

We've worked with four people from Unfold. The managing director isn’t working on the project, but he agreed to the scope. We also work with a project manager, an experienced designer, and a technical lead website developer.

How did you come to work with Unfold?

I found them on Clutch. Since we’re a social enterprise, we don’t have a lot of funding, so I wanted to look for a company that was reasonably experienced but not too expensive. I selected three companies from Clutch and contacted them to ask for quotes. Unfold wasn’t the cheapest, but after our conversation, I thought they had the relevant experience. Their price range was roughly what we expected, so we decided to move forward with them.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in April 2024, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I'm happy with our collaboration with Unfold; it has been a very positive experience. We’ve received a lot of good feedback about the design. The directory isn’t fully launched, but we’ve received good feedback about the design and the colors. There are some minor bugs, but that’s inevitable. When we report bugs, Unfold fixes them quickly.

How did Unfold perform from a project management standpoint?

We communicate via Google Meet. The project manager is focused and communicate with us well.

Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

The experienced designer and the technical lead website developer are both excellent too. They’re knowledgeable and friendly to work with.

It would be good to provide more examples of the effect of some of the technical terms when agreeing on the specifications.

Initially Unfold was engaged to redesign and develop Corsearch’s global corporate marketing website. Since the launch of the new site in late 2022 we have worked with Unfold in an ongoing partnership, working to continually improve and optimise the website. Specifically Unfold provided us with web design and UX support as well as the creation of custom illustrations and animations for the site. They also handle all the technical elements of the site, including WordPress development and hosting.

Unfold have a slick project management process. We have a dedicated project manger who we meet with once a week to discuss the latest items we’re working on. They also bring members of the studio team along to the calls when it’s helpful to collaborate directly with those actually doing the work. They use Notion to organise work and it’s easy for us to create tickets and collaborate with the team via the shared board, in real time. 

They’re reliable, deliver on time and if there are any issues they’re clearly communicated with us.

What particularly stands out about Unfold is their in-depth knowledge of WordPress. They’ve created a truly flexible, modular website for us that means we can create and amend pages quickly and easily. They’re also not afraid to challenge us, or bring new ideas to the table which help us make the site work harder for the business, which is always appreciated.

We commissioned Unfold to design and develop an online tool that would allow customers to search and compare different self-storage providers across the whole of the UK. As a brand new service, we needed Unfold to support us with researching and defining how the new tool should work. Following a thorough scoping phase they then worked iteratively to design the prototype of the website in Figma. 

Once the designs were signed off, they then began development of the website. The key feature of the site is the search tool - which allows users to input their address or postcode and then return a list and map view of the different providers in their area. The tool tells users how far away each provider is and the price of a standard unit at each site, so they’re able to easily compare. 

Once users have found their ideal site they’re able to click on the page for more information before being transferred to the provider's site to book. Throughout the process, Unfold also paid close attention to the design and development aspects that would help us maximise our SEO so that the site can easily be found by users searching for storage. They also developed a tool which allows us to quickly and easily bulk update 600+ locations currently listed on the platform.

• Launch of the new platform within a short deadline so that we could start learning how customers interact with the tool 
• Ability to quickly and easily edit 600+ sites on the platform in bulk 
• Fully integrated GA4 tracking to be able to track the performance of search and results 
• Implementation of SEO best practices to maximise appearance in the SERP.

Unfold had a dedicated project manager assigned to the project which helped to ensure smooth running from start to finish. They launched the site on a tight timeline, and any challenges identified throughout the process were clearly communicated.

I was particularly impressed by Unfold’s ability to master both UX and Tech throughout the process. They have a really strong feedback loop between the design and technical teams, with both being strongly involved throughout the process. This meant we were able to deliver a tool that works well and users love.

They had a change in personnel (project manager) towards the end of the project that also fell over the Christmas holidays, which meant some of the communication could have been better - however, this was quickly addressed.

The project encompassed a complete overhaul and redesign of the digital experience for our FairPay dashboard, helping to make the complex analytics on our platform more intuitive and easy to understand for our users. Unfold began the project with a discovery and understanding phase where we discussed our user personas, objectives and KPIs.

We then worked together on an initial project where the UX and UI for the platform was designed. We now work together on a monthly basis to iterate and test the prototype with users as well as adding new features.

Throughout the project Unfold have been fantastic. We have a shared Slack channel that keeps communication open and frictionless. We also have regular team calls to keep us aligned, share ideas, present demos and use these as a regular touchpoint to iterate and develop the prototype.
