I’m a physician and the founder of Great Heights, a medical practice. I also founded a separate company, ClearStep LLC, to develop an app that I could market to other drug treatment programs and allow my patients to use.

What was the scope of their involvement?

TechAhead has developed a custom mobile app for my practice. Initially, we sent them an RFP and told them what we were trying to do. We wanted an app with games for recovery. We didn’t want it to be a prescription digital app; we wanted it to be a companion app that patients could use when they weren’t around. We wanted to mimic my practice style in the app.

After we signed the NDA, we sent them our idea. I also sent them an overview of the foundational architecture I wanted for the games to be coded. We wanted an admin panel to change the questions and minigames. We let them know that the app would have at least 400 questions. I also sent them my idea of the minigame design.

TechAhead has designed the screens and created the Figma and flow before starting the coding. They’ve used Figma and Node.js.

The app is a recovery app for patients with drug addiction. It goes through a story and has psychological principles like cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed care. These are built into the app in a subtle way. The app has questions that patients answer, a game, and a relaxation feature. It also has a narrative.

Once the app is live on the app store, I’ll test it for 12 weeks. I’m currently in the process of testing the MVP. There’s a phase two after I test the MVP. TechAhead will work on phase two after I finish the database project.

Syed is my main contact, and we've also spoken to Rohit. I've also worked with Sneha, who has taken charge as a project manager after the first one we had, and has taken care of the design work as well.

I did a lot of research. When I had the idea, I put it into ChatGPT and asked it to give me a list of companies that could develop the app for me. I chose TechAhead because they understood gaming and had developed some medical apps.

The feedback from the testers has been very positive. One of them has enjoyed the overall experience. The stories and scenarios have felt realistic. The app has a non-judgmental approach. The feedback has consistently encouraged me to think about my choices and how they impact me over time. Overall, I’ve enjoyed the storytelling, reflections, exercises, and decision paths. I’m curious to see how the story ends.

How did TechAhead perform from a project management standpoint?

They meet deadlines and stay on budget. They’re also flexible. Initially, I didn’t factor in how I would handle patients who didn’t want to stop using drugs. Midway through the project, I figured that we should have an early pathway. TechAhead has been able to incorporate that with minimal cost to me because they've built the architecture from the beginning to add more modules.

We use Trello, GitHub, and Firebase. We communicate via email and virtual meetings. We meet on Microsoft Teams twice a week.

What did you find most impressive about them?

TechAhead is very professional and knowledgeable. They know what they’re doing. I’ve been impressed the whole time. They’re also easy to work with. They’ve taken my idea and brought it to life. I’ve interviewed at least 10 companies, and TechAhead is the only one that has understood the concept.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Not really. The communication is good. TechAhead is flexible and patient. They respond on time to emails.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

It depends on what you want to do. If you have an idea, TechAhead can bring it to life. If you’re specific about what you want, it’ll be easier. For example, for the second project I’m doing with them, I’ve used AI. I’ve refined the project before sending it to them. Even though I’ve sent it to them, they’ve done a code review and found quite a few bugs. We’ve been going back and forth to get things ready before they start coding.

Before they start any coding, TechAhead goes over what I want to ensure we’re on the same page. Once they start coding, it’s difficult to change things.

I’m a department director at MyRaina, a medical-focused company. Our product is for the elder care environment, creating a safer environment for elder care residents through an AI-powered system that handles falls and fall risks in real time. It monitors body movement and sends alerts to caregivers to ensure safety.

We needed to develop a mobile app for our solution, so we hired a third party to do the mobile app development.

What was the scope of their involvement?

TechAhead has developed a cross-platform mobile application for Android and iOS. We’ve provided the requirements, and the team has shared designs and UI wireframes. Based on our approval, they’ve done the UX and UI design and all the frontend linking with our engineering to the backend. The team has built the app from scratch and done the frontend design; we’ve done the backend design.

The app allows installers to install our device. Healthcare providers can use our device to manage alerts that get detected when somebody falls or is at risk. An alert will go to the phone, and they can respond to that alert.

TechAhead will also develop a PC-based app for us. We started with a statement of work to get our apps developed. As we grow and add more features, we’ve increased our monthly engagement model by requesting more contract hours. We also have an agreement in place for the PC-based app. We’ll keep the monthly engagement ongoing as we add new features.

We work with 4–6 teammates from TechAhead, including a project manager, a UI/UX designer, a tech lead, a frontend developer, and a QA person. We also interface with people at a higher level.

We’ve released the app to the Play Store and gone through the full approval for iOS and Android production releases. Now, every time TechAhead implements new features, they can push newer builds to the Play Store. The team has more than met our expectations.

TechAhead has stayed on budget and met deadlines. The team has supported us off-hours and on some holidays, exceeding our expectations. We have scheduled ongoing meetings. The team uses AI tools to create meeting minutes. We communicate via email and Microsoft Teams. TechAhead pushes code releases to GitHub and shares accounts with us on the Google Play Console and Apple Connect.

What did you find most impressive about them?

TechAhead has a lot of mobile app development experience and very good UX designers. Their engineers are also very good. We’re very happy with the team.

Provide TechAhead with what they need early. Share your roadmap and give them the devices they need to have access to fully test. The team is more than a short-term vendor; they’re a strategic partner. Give them all the context. It’s also important to give them an engineering counterpart to interface with when they’re doing the frontend code. That will move things faster.

TechAhead has created the app from scratch based on my requirements, and the team has shared the designs with me for approval before moving on to the development phase. The app is a football trivia app, and the team has deployed it using AWS.

We started working together in August 2024, and the engagement is ongoing. We’re currently in the final stages of the project, and the app will go into production in January 2025. We’re planning to start a second phase of the project with TechAhead.

TechAhead has met the deadlines. We’ve used Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, and email for communication. The team has been very professional and has introduced everyone on their team. However, I think the team could improve the testing process by providing a proper checklist. Currently, we have to test everything from A to Z, and it would be better if TechAhead told us what we need to test.

We've had some issues with a project manager and experienced slow development. However, we've mentioned this situation, and TechAhead has addressed it by assigning a new project manager, and things have been perfect since.

We planned to release the app in December, but due to the vacation period, we've had a delay and haven't gone live yet.

What did you find most impressive about them?

TechAhead is smart and provides options and scenarios for what we want to do. The team is very fast in their response and delivers work outside the scope, which has been remarkable. TechAhead has met and exceed the client's expectation. I’m doing most of the translation for the project, and I think it would be a good added value for TechAhead to hire someone who speaks Arabic. Nonetheless, TechAhead is fast to deliver when you ask for a feature or further development, and they provide good quality. TechAhead has been responsible for developing our app from scratch according to our brief and integrating it into our backend systems via APIs. The app is a cross-platform mobile shopping app that integrates seamlessly with our existing in-store and online ecosystems. It caters to a diverse customer base, complies with local regulations, and embodies our standards for quality, security, and user experience.

We’ve defined the following key deliverables for the project:

• Core features (MVP): product catalog and search, advanced filtering and sorting, product details, cart and checkout, user accounts, store locator, push notifications, basic product recommendations, self-checkout, and in-app feedback and review flows.
• Post-launch support (initial three months): bug fixes and minor updates.
• Future scalability: modular architecture enabling seamless addition of more advanced personalization, AI-driven features, user-generated content, in-house promo engine, and other new functionalities without extensive refactoring.

We’ve also defined the following success metrics and KPIs for the project:

• App store rating: minimum 4.4 stars.
• User acquisition and engagement: 150,000 downloads and 45,000 monthly active users (MAUs) in the first six months; 60,000–75,000 MAUs in 6–12 months; and 100,000–120,000 MAUs in the second year.
• Conversion rate: minimum 1.75%.
• Average order value (AOV): minimum R3,000.

We’ve also defined the following technical requirements for the project:

• Cross-platform development using Flutter or React Native for simultaneous iOS, Android, and Huawei HarmonyOS delivery. The app must also be available on Huawei AppGallery.
• Integration via middleware layer. All backend integrations (ERP, CRM) will be exposed through a middleware layer offering RESTful or GraphQL APIs.
• Data sync frequency: full product catalog daily refresh; pricing and promotions multiple times per day; and stock levels near real-time updates.
• Security and compliance: full compliance with South Africa’s POPIA regulations; payment data must meet secure payment standards; employ encryption at rest and in transit, plus secure authentication flows.
• Performance and usability: optimize for low latency (e.g., ~2 seconds load time under average network conditions); ensure mobile-first, responsive design, and WCAG accessibility best practices.
• Offline or low-connectivity scenarios: allow basic product browsing, adding items to cart, and viewing order history/loyalty info offline or with intermittent connectivity; automatically synchronize data once a stable connection is restored.
• Multilingual support: the app should be designed for easy localization from the MVP stage; main languages are English, isiZulu, Sesotho, Setswana, and Afrikaans; ensure UI layouts and data models can accommodate translations (e.g., variable text lengths, locale-based formatting).
• Brand guidelines and design systems: a comprehensive CI guidebook will be provided, including brand assets, typography, and color schemes; TechAhead should integrate existing UI kits or propose a new design system aligned with the brand identity.
• Analytics and insights: event tracking (product views, add-to-cart, checkouts, conversions); conversion funnel analysis to identify drop-offs; behavioral segmentation and cohort analysis for retention tracking; A/B testing frameworks (e.g., Firebase Remote Config, Mixpanel) for experimentation; privacy and POPIA compliance with data anonymization and user consent.

We’ve also defined the following maintenance and scalability roadmap for the project:

• Modular architecture: microservices or modular components for easy updates and feature integrations.
• Code documentation and standards: in-code documentation (e.g., JSDoc); comprehensive API documentation (Swagger/OpenAPI); internal wikis/playbooks outlining coding conventions, deployment processes, and troubleshooting.

• Support and maintenance: coverage during business hours, with an escalation path for P1 issues after hours; scheduled maintenance communicated at least 48 hours in advance.
• Reporting: monthly or quarterly review of incidents, resolutions, and uptime metrics.

How did your relationship with your partner evolve?

 Our relationship with TechAhead has grown much stronger over time. In my first review I raised concerns about project management, but those issues were resolved as the team improved their communication, planning and accountability. The partnership now feels collaborative and business-focused, with TechAhead working as an extension of our team.

In what ways can they improve?

 They can improve by anticipating client-side dependencies earlier and flagging them before they become bottlenecks. Sharper upfront alignment on timelines and responsibilities would make already strong delivery even smoother.

What advice do you have for clients with similar needs to yours?

Treat TechAhead as a strategic partner, not just a vendor. Share your long-term roadmap and success metrics early. The more context you give them, the more value they can deliver in both the short-term build and future scalability.

What specific goals or objectives did you hire TechAhead to accomplish for your home improvement retail business?

I hired them to develop an e-commerce mobile app for us.

SOLUTION

Can you describe the scope of work TechAhead handled for this project? 

TechAhead has been responsible for developing our app from scratch according to our brief and integrating it into our backend systems via APIs. The app is a cross-platform mobile shopping app that integrates seamlessly with our existing in-store and online ecosystems. It caters to a diverse customer base, complies with local regulations, and embodies our standards for quality, security, and user experience.

We’ve defined the following key deliverables for the project:

• Core features (MVP): product catalog and search, advanced filtering and sorting, product details, cart and checkout, user accounts, store locator, push notifications, basic product recommendations, self-checkout, and in-app feedback and review flows.
• Post-launch support (initial three months): bug fixes and minor updates.
• Future scalability: modular architecture enabling seamless addition of more advanced personalization, AI-driven features, user-generated content, in-house promo engine, and other new functionalities without extensive refactoring.

We’ve also defined the following success metrics and KPIs for the project:

• App store rating: minimum 4.4 stars.
• User acquisition and engagement: 150,000 downloads and 45,000 monthly active users (MAUs) in the first six months; 60,000–75,000 MAUs in 6–12 months; and 100,000–120,000 MAUs in the second year.
• Conversion rate: minimum 1.75%.
• Average order value (AOV): minimum R3,000.

We’ve also defined the following technical requirements for the project:

• Cross-platform development using Flutter or React Native for simultaneous iOS, Android, and Huawei HarmonyOS delivery. The app must also be available on Huawei AppGallery.
• Integration via middleware layer. All backend integrations (ERP, CRM) will be exposed through a middleware layer offering RESTful or GraphQL APIs.
• Data sync frequency: full product catalog daily refresh; pricing and promotions multiple times per day; and stock levels near real-time updates.
• Security and compliance: full compliance with South Africa’s POPIA regulations; payment data must meet secure payment standards; employ encryption at rest and in transit, plus secure authentication flows.
• Performance and usability: optimize for low latency (e.g., ~2 seconds load time under average network conditions); ensure mobile-first, responsive design, and WCAG accessibility best practices.
• Offline or low-connectivity scenarios: allow basic product browsing, adding items to cart, and viewing order history/loyalty info offline or with intermittent connectivity; automatically synchronize data once a stable connection is restored.
• Multilingual support: the app should be designed for easy localization from the MVP stage; main languages are English, isiZulu, Sesotho, Setswana, and Afrikaans; ensure UI layouts and data models can accommodate translations (e.g., variable text lengths, locale-based formatting).
• Brand guidelines and design systems: a comprehensive CI guidebook will be provided, including brand assets, typography, and color schemes; TechAhead should integrate existing UI kits or propose a new design system aligned with the brand identity.
• Analytics and insights: event tracking (product views, add-to-cart, checkouts, conversions); conversion funnel analysis to identify drop-offs; behavioral segmentation and cohort analysis for retention tracking; A/B testing frameworks (e.g., Firebase Remote Config, Mixpanel) for experimentation; privacy and POPIA compliance with data anonymization and user consent.

We’ve also defined the following maintenance and scalability roadmap for the project:

• Modular architecture: microservices or modular components for easy updates and feature integrations.
• Code documentation and standards: in-code documentation (e.g., JSDoc); comprehensive API documentation (Swagger/OpenAPI); internal wikis/playbooks outlining coding conventions, deployment processes, and troubleshooting.
• Version control and CI/CD: Git-based workflows with feature branches, pull requests, and code reviews; automated tests, linting, security scans in the CI pipeline; semantic versioning for releases.
• Agile methodologies: Scrum Kanban frameworks with sprints, backlog grooming, and retrospectives; continuous improvement loops based on user feedback and analytics.
• Testing and quality assurance: automated unit, integration, and end-to-end testing; performance, load, and regular security testing (penetration tests).
• User acceptance testing (UAT) and beta testing: a dedicated UAT phase before the final release, including beta testing with a limited user group; feedback from UAT drives final bug fixes, UI refinements, and performance tuning.
• Monitoring and logging: real-time monitoring (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana); structured logging and alert systems for quick incident response.
• Future growth and roadmap visibility: infrastructure as code (Terraform) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) for scalable deployments.

We’ve also defined the following high-level phases for the project:

• Phase 1 (MVP): core e-commerce functionalities — catalog, cart, checkout, user accounts, etc.
• Phase 2: AI-driven recommendations and advanced personalization, in-house promo engine integration, and user-generated content (e.g., project sharing, community Q&A).

Finally, we’ve defined the following service level agreements (SLAs) for the project:

• Uptime: target 99.5% monthly availability, excluding scheduled maintenance.
• Incident response times: critical (P1) — respond within 2 hours, fix within 6 hours; high (P2) — respond within 4 hours, fix within 24 hours; normal (P3) — respond within 12 hours, fix within 3 days.
• Support and maintenance: coverage during business hours, with an escalation path for P1 issues after hours; scheduled maintenance communicated at least 48 hours in advance.
• Reporting: monthly or quarterly review of incidents, resolutions, and uptime metrics.

TechAhead’s project management has been a disaster. It’s virtually nonexistent.

What did you find most impressive about them?

TechAhead has good UI designers. Also, they have a low initial cost.

Are there any areas they could improve?

TechAhead needs proper project management, clear communication, rigorous testing, and a focus on business outcomes rather than just delivering a pretty UI at a low cost.

We needed help with mobile app and web development.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

TechAhead is developing our app, including a mobile app and a web app, from scratch. The team is also helping with the design. The app is for iOS and Android. TechAhead is using Flutter and AWS, among other technologies. The process started with the app's development, and TechAhead is currently working on the design.

What is the team composition?

We have a team of about 10 people, including backend developers, web developers, QA specialists, and designers. We also have a project manager.

How did you come to work with TechAhead?

I found TechAhead through a Google search. The team had a great online presence and seemed to be at the top of the industry based on their reviews. We put in a request on their website, and they got back to us right away. We had a great initial conversation; they loved the concept and were very understanding. 

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent $30,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in March 2025, and the engagement is ongoing. We plan on using them after the launch for continuous support.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

TechAhead has more than met my expectations — they're fantastic. The app isn’t ready yet, but we’re about 85% of the way there. We plan on launching in Miami in September 2025. I’m glad I chose them.

How did TechAhead perform from a project management standpoint?

They deliver on time and within budget. Everything they promised is happening. We have three stand-up meetings a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We use Jira and Microsoft Teams for project management and communication.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re very proactive and on top of things. Anytime we need to reach out to them, they’re always there.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there aren’t any.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Have your idea black and white for them. Don’t just give them something and expect them to do what your vision is. You have to sit down with them and take time to explain the vision and show mock-ups. Give them the right direction, and they’ll be 100% perfect.

I'm a technical product manager at a company that delivers beauty and cosmetology education to our customers, which are schools and students.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with techahead?

We needed help developing an iOS and Android application to deliver exam prep questions to our customers. Individual students could buy those questions and prepare for their state board licensing exams.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

techahead has helped us design and develop a mobile app. Since taking over as product manager, I've met weekly with techahead's staff and our internal staff to discuss the app's maintenance. This includes fixing bugs and developing new features. Our recent charge has been improving our app store score.

Moreover, techahead has been developing new features to increase the score, focusing on improving the app's marketing and functionality.

Some of the app's features and functionalities include the ability for students to take the tests we've already loaded into the app. This prepares them for specific state board exams, whether it's barbering, cosmetology, nails, or aesthetics. The app also allows students to create their own tests.

Currently, we have a maintenance agreement. The team maintains the tech stack and the application deployment anytime we make changes.

What is the team composition?

We meet weekly with a project manager and a tech architect who works on both the iOS and Android versions of the app. This person coordinates all of the engineering tasks for us.

How did you come to work with techahead?

I joined this specific application as a product manager a year and a half ago. The decision to engage them had already been made.

How much have you invested with them?

We pay them $2,000 per month, which is renewed yearly. So, around $24,000 a year.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in January 2024, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Tech Ahead has successfully completed the app. In fact, its App Store score is 4.5 with 487 ratings. When I took over, it was around 3.5–3.8. We've been working on features with techahead, including a pop-up asking users to rate the app if they're having success with it. This encourages people to leave ratings if they're enjoying the app.

The Android Store rating has also improved significantly. It was around 2.8 before we installed the same pop-up feature. It's been a big improvement.

Overall, the quality of techahead's work has been successful. All the features they've developed since I've come on have been successful. We haven't had to go back and change the features and functionalities because they involve us in the QA process before releasing anything new. We have control over ensuring that the requested features are executed correctly. We're in maintenance mode now.

How did techahead perform from a project management standpoint?

Communication and timeliness are important for this application. It's a smaller application for our business, so it's not the main focus. However, anytime we ask for updates or for them to work a little more quickly, they accommodate us. We don't have to make improvements by a specific date, so the pace is leisurely. They get the work done and keep us updated, which is good. They've been helpful.

We primarily communicate through email and Slack. We also have weekly meetings on Microsoft Teams. We don't have any formal ticketing platform, so the communication is pretty informal.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their biggest strength is their ability to take the information we give them the first time and go with it. We don't have many formal communications, so we can basically tell techahead what we want. They go to work on it and come back to us when it's ready for testing.

Are there any areas they could improve?

More proactive communication would be helpful. When we ask for updates, they're able to provide them. However, sometimes if a project takes two or three weeks, we won't hear from techahead until the very end. It would be nice to get more regular communication, such as when they finish a part of the project.

Set expectations and communication norms right when you start. Make sure you're comfortable with that before you start executing the work. This can be a big factor regardless of who you're working with.
