Our goal was to build a custom scalable software solution to allow political candidates in the U.S. to accept digital assets in a secure and compliant manner. We hired Startup Labs to build the project from the ground up. We needed the end user (candidate) to be able to accept the assets in their native token form or automatically convert them into USD and deposit the funds into the candidate's bank account. We also needed to collect legal information from the donors and aggregate that information in a way that made it easy for the candidate to comply with U.S. campaign finance law.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We selected Startup Labs after a strong recommendation from another partner. We did look at a few other proposals but Jai and his team were clearly the best fit for our project goals.

Startup Labs designed and developed a Django based web framework. Jai and his team spent several weeks with us creating excellent project mockups and user flows. This was particularly important as our project dealt with finances and flow-of-funds regulations. Next, they created a clickable prototype where we made some adjustments before finalizing the business requirements document.

Our application included integrating with a crypto exchange and a U.S. banking institution. After completing the UI Jai and his team finished project deliverables approximately every two weeks. The team updated me every week on a meeting where we discussed the project's progress and challenges. I was impressed with Jai's consistent and timely communication throughout the entire process. The team continue to support and expand on Victory Block in the future.

I mostly worked with Jai who was the project manager during the process. However, I also worked with Hanish who completed the UI design.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We met all of our project goals and each deliverable was completed in a timely manner with very few bugs. When outside factors pushed our launch date out Jai and his team were very flexible and accommodating.

Our project manager Jai was very hands on and reached out regularly with updates on the application's progress. We used Slack to communicate. Jai always responded in a timely manner and was an excellent communicator.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We're impressed with their willingness to find creative solutions to unique challenges that came up throughout our development process. He was always very upbeat and positive, even when we had to re-work aspects of our workflow. After working with Jai for the last 6+ months I feel like he is not only a crucial part of the Victory Block team but also a close friend.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Our experience with Startup Labs was excellent.

We delivered a wireframe and the team took care of all development end to end. The development included extensive research and planning for complex backend capabilities as well as front end usability and management.

The product manager was our main point of contact. I am unsure exactly how big the team is but I know at least one designer and four developers performed the work.

The team designed the site and completed all of the architecture on the back end.

Communication was quick and effective. We did not have scheduled meetings, but the team was always available to talk on an ad hoc basis through email and Zoom.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They were able to solve extremely complex problems and were not discouraged by challenges faced on this project.

I’m a surgeon working at a hospital in Boston, but during my interaction with Startup Labs, I was transitioning from the west coast to the east.

As a surgeon, there are a number of areas where we need new technology to help us solve patient problems. One problem I had specifically as a vascular surgeon was clotting in patients’ legs. I wanted a device that could solve that problem.

What was the scope of their involvement?

During our first meetings, I walked Startup Labs through some of the products that already existed for this problem, as well as what I envisioned for my own design. They were able to tell me what was and wasn’t feasible, what materials we’d need, and what the cost would be. 

We kept meeting and talking, and ultimately they drew several iterations of my idea. We settled on one that we thought was the most doable and related to what I originally had in mind, and then Startup Labs went ahead and created the prototype for me.

I spoke to a bunch of people, but my main contacts were a group of four different people.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The patenting process took a long time, but now that it’s completed, I’m starting to talk to companies about taking the project on. Having the prototype already developed is a huge deal, because it shows investment in the idea and shows that the product works. I’m about to enter it into a big vascular contest, and if it wins, it will gain a lot of attention. I’m excited about it.

I would absolutely work with Startup Labs over anyone else on future projects. They weren’t some gigantic company that I couldn’t speak with directly; their size and education allowed us to have really good conversations about the product. Also, they didn’t over-promise — from the get go, they let me know what could be done and what the costs would be. Their transparency made the work much easier, which was great because my time is very important to me.

They performed really well, I’m very happy with Startup Labs. Everyone from the team was very accessible and very responsive. We were in touch over email on a weekly basis, and over phone, every other week or so.

The fact that they pulled the project off is most impressive to me. Startup Labs isn’t a medical team, but they understood the concept enough that they could go from knowing nothing to developing a beautiful prototype that made sense. They fulfilled all the specs within a couple of months. 

It shows they’re not only smart, but that they’re able to come together as a team. They have a good idea of each other’s strengths and weaknesses enough that they could put the right people on each aspect of the job.

I honestly don’t have any areas of improvement for them.

The big thing is that you have to be respectful both ways. If you’re working with Startup Labs, you’re working as part of a team, so you have to work together and be accessible to them as well.

Our project was very large in scope, but our overall goal was to create a custom CRM for the real estate industry.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The CRM platform that we created together with Startup Labs Infotech Private Limited was a custom web application that also had progressive web app (PWA) features. The product could be installed on Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu, and also on iOS and Android phones. The application has a lot of the standard features that you’d see on a real estate application but combines them in several ways that add a lot of value for the consumer.

The system has mortgage calculators, affordability calculators, nationwide MLS search, and also a messaging component that allows you to message between the different user types that you’re working with. You can send a message that links you directly to your realtor, your lender, and the seller all within the same application. It also has a calendar component that allows you to request showings for properties and automatically attach the emails of the other users associated with the property.

What is the team composition?

We had a total of about 10 people working on the project at any given time. One of those would be the project manager, and then we had one designer, three frontend developers, three backend developers, and a technical architect.

We worked together to create the CRM from October 2018­—May 2019, and we are continuing to work with them on other projects as well.

We haven’t measured any direct impact from the application, but the products are very functional and reliable. The quality of the CRM they delivered was extremely high, and we’ve received very positive user feedback so far.

They have performed beyond our expectations. Whenever they take on a task, it gets accomplished quickly and completely. We communicate with them through both Slack and Jira over the course of our work, and they consistently communicate their goals and progress clearly. What was the scope of their involvement?

We had an older styling, which they refreshed as Bootstrap system. They added several features, including a claim system. Most of the project was a maintenance, updates, and restructuring of a platform for one of our clients. Their involvement primarily focused on the backend, but they were also involved in the frontend refresh.

They assisted us as we built an improved version of the existing system. We managed the project on our end, so we created the project and feature lists. We assigned them to the areas that we felt they could contribute the most.

They did all the work we asked for and met professional standards. Some of the work has complex business logic that needed to be encoded and embedded into the system. We had a lot of feedback and testing to make sure our stakeholders were happy. The system we built was used successfully, and the client was pleased with the results.

Considering the value for cost and the personal level of service, I’m very satisfied with the final deliverables. Startup Labs Infotech Private Limited is developing a Canva/Figma-inspired app for the printing industry that automatically nests images based on their true shape rather than rectangular bounding boxes. This feature achieves better nesting efficiency, saving material and cost.

So far, the team has delivered the following:

• A fully functional online image nesting engine integrated with a user-friendly interface
• A set of robust algorithms for automatic image nesting based on shape
• An easy-to-use drag-and-drop interface for manual nesting, utilizing real-time collision detection and resolution
• A Shopify app for our tenants to use on their Shopify store
• An order management system with role-based access control
• A robust workflow builder to automate order management

For tools and technologies, we used Figma for the initial screens. The team is using Rust for the nesting engine and custom JavaScript to trace the true shapes of the graphics. We also have a WASM version of the nesting engine.

We found Startup Labs Infotech Private Limited on Upwork. The team seemed like the best fit of all the companies I interviewed. Jai, the founder, listened and asked questions, seeming to understand the vision more than any other team.

We’ve spent $95,000 so far, and the project price is currently around $122,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in November 2024, and the engagement is ongoing. I plan to continue working with them for years to come on this project and many more.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Our nesting engine produces tighter, more efficient solutions than our competitors, achieving 10–15% material savings. For example, we can consistently nest a set of images within 17.5 square feet, while our competitors’ solutions require a minimum of 20 square feet.

Additionally, one of my clients using the platform can save hours nesting images when compared to a Python script I wrote to nest images, and the results are significantly better on this new platform.

We faced some challenges nesting the concave polygons that we generated to represent the outline/true of our graphics, is/was computationally expensive. We quickly realized that the open-source solutions that we initially considered were too slow and would not have worked for our use case. 

They would either crash or take several minutes to return a solution. Startup Labs was able to find an open-source collision detection engine and modify the optimization algorithm to better suit our needs. I am very happy they were able to find and adapt this. Without it, I don't think our product would be viable.

How did Startup Labs Infotech Private Limited perform from a project management standpoint?

Startup Labs Infotech Private Limited’s project management is the best I’ve experienced. The communication and collaboration were phenomenal. We meet twice over Zoom each week, and the relevant members of the team are present to show the progress made. The team asks several relevant questions when things don’t seem to make sense and proposes solutions before diving too deep and building something that ultimately wouldn’t work.

This was a huge contrast to a previous development agency I had hired in the past where communication was poor and they would develop things without planning it out beforehand. I honestly could not have asked for a better team to collaborate with.

I had no specific timeline. I wasn't sure how long this would take. Startup Labs did their best to plan the project. We did extend our timeline by about a month due to the challenges of finding a suitable nesting engine, but this had no impact to me.

Startup Labs did meet the deadlines they set for all of the things they could realistically plan and predict. We also continued to add more and more features as the project progressed, and they were able to handle those as well.

Their project management, cumulative talent, speed, and ability to adapt and collaborate set them apart.
