SmartData took my graphic designs of 9-pages, each with multiple modules along with my description of the work flow and it built a sophisticated gaming/learning environment that hires full-time writing coaches with daily player interaction and provides live daily video.

The one semester course requires daily writing and ends with players producing an online portfolio that is built and launched from within the application.

I was not a software producer when the project was conceived so I hired a broker that introduced my to SmartData.

The application is far too complex to describe here, but the application was built using LAMP stack, Cake PHP and uses MySQL database. Since I had already designed each of the 14-pages with multiple process on each page, We started with the first page and worked our way through the project.

After working full-time for over a year, we spent a month debugging, which is reasonable given the complexity of the project.

This very complex system works. For me, that is the highest praise.

Very friendly and accommodating. I still keep very close contact and expect to rehire SmartData to rebrand my platform.

We needed to develop a website and mobile app. We had an idea of the design and the various features we wanted.

What was the scope of their involvement?

smartData Enterprise used React Native to build the cross-platform mobile app for both iOS and Android. They used Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to develop the website.

We’ve worked with about seven people, with developers coming and going throughout the project.

We searched the market in Denmark, US, and India on Upwork. smartData Enterprises posted a bet on our job. Because of their success rate, willingness to do it at an affordable price, and long history, we picked them.

We started working with them in October 2019 and the project is still ongoing but we are in the last phases of it.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Our project and company is fully dependent on their work, and everyone has been satisfied with their work on the website and app. They’ve done a good job at implementing our ideas, so we’re very grateful for that. Once they both launch, we’ll receive qualitative feedback.

How did smartData Enterprises perform from a project management standpoint?

They’ve been excellent. They work efficiently and everything is always up to date. In terms of communication skills, they constantly provide feedback and stay in contact with us on the progress of the project every day. The projects have always been on time and they’ve been extremely helpful. We didn’t quite get a full scope of how the webpage was going to be developed. We went from focusing on the app to the website being built and it would’ve been helpful to have a timeline.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They don’t find easy solutions or make a quick fix. We have tried other companies and they try to find loopholes and don’t go with our exact idea. We really feel working with smartData Enterprises is a major step forward. They’re a company that takes responsibility for itself. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

They should be a bit more proactive in suggesting ideas to the customer and coming forward with their own experience, not take our designs for granted. Sometimes when we come up with ideas, they automatically implement them. It would be better if they looked at the big picture, but overall it has been a good experience. I think there was a minor culture gap as well, so we could be more proactive ourselves. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Always be proactive yourself and provide constant feedback on their work. Be honest; if there is something that’s implemented and developed that’s not according to plan, then tell smartData Enterprises to fix it.

I’m the CEO and founder of Carescribr. Carescribr's a documentation tool for physicians and medical teams to better manage medical records.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with smartData Enterprises?

We needed to develop our MVP to demonstrate the product's viability and its ability to make the electronic document questionnaire more efficient. That was the premise that we needed to demonstrate.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We outlined the problem that the product's attempting to solve and the ways to go about solving the problem. Then, we thought through the workflows that we expected a medical team and physician to follow for documentation. We worked through those workflows to identify the features that the smartData Enterprises team needed to build. From there, we were able to map out a progress sheet, which was essentially a map and timeline for features. It also mapped out a testing process to demonstrate features' functionality before we moved on to the next phase.

Their team completed the first phase, which resulted in an MVP that functions at a certain level. The application as a couple of different components. They also created a web application that was written in HTML5 and a native application for the iPad, which was done with Swift. They build the background database that's in the actual using MySQL.

We rolled the MVP out to various clients, needing their assistance to ensure that the features worked. We added a separate phase to allow for integration with an EMR system.

What is the team composition?

The majority of the development had three team members, one of which came in and out to work on the server database. We worked with one individual at the beginning who created the wireframes for the tablet application. After we signed off on that component, an engineer on the server-side came in and someone else supported the tablet application. We also engaged with a separate person who worked on the web application.

How did you come to work with smartData Enterprises?

Basically, I went through various websites that rated different types of agencies and development firms. I felt that an individual software engineer was too risky for our case because we had a lot of components. It was a bigger project than I thought a single person could do reliably. Once we settled on a couple of firms we interviewed each one based on a set of criteria, which included experience with healthcare software and price. We interviewed the firms and only two out of five were able to repeat back to us what the application was trying to do and provided an idea of how they’d go about doing it. smartData Eneterprises did that. Their supervisor had significant experience and social skills to not only navigate the technical side but also speak to me as a client. 

How much have you invested with them?

Up until this point, the total for the development's around $34,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The wireframes started in the summer of 2018 and ended in November. We started development in January 2019.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Their team was professional and the end results were positive. Patient feedback has been positive with regard to the UI/UX. We've also gotten positive results from the medical team and physicians for our concepts and outputs. 

We decided as a company to pivot in a different direction. The problem and product are the same but we're looking into a different market. We scrapped our clients from the summer because they didn’t fit the new direction. I created a clinic and using Carescribr internally. We're optimizing the software alongside the clinic to ensure that the product's components function and do so properly before we go back out to the market.

How did smartData Enterprises perform from a project management standpoint?

In the beginning, we communicated via Skype meetings. When we had a specific issue, they sent a message during the day. Due to the time difference, communication came in spurts. I provided feedback routinely around 11—12 at night, which their team reviewed and sent back to me in the morning. There was a constant flow of communication, but it was asynchronous.

As the development went along, we became less dependent on audio conversations. smartData Enterprises sent a new build that I would review, work through, and test. I typed up changes or created a video for larger changes to send to their team. They confirmed by a text message that their team understood. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

smartData Enterprises has a wide variety of engineers with expertise in many different areas. If I had a question that the immediate team couldn’t answer, they outsourced the question to other people. Their team expanded the network to get an answer or complete the task correctly rather than spending a lot of development hours tinkering. They had the ability to get an answer fast and implement it into our project. I have no reservations about their technical skills.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The time difference made the engagement a little challenging. Their team made mistakes at times and without realizing, called me at one or two in the morning.

My overall experience was great, but certain aspects ran us over budget. There were a couple of instances when I felt that their team thought they understood where the project was going but made an assumption. This lead to back and forth as well as meant that we had to walk back the project because their team went down a path that I didn’t want, which was costly and we ran over budget.l This was towards the middle of the project when I gave them space to work more independently. I had a couple of demos set up in April or May because their team assured me the product would be done in March. They were able to pull in the resources to get ready for the demos, but I wasn’t able to display the software in two of the three demos as promised because it wasn’t functioning at the level promised at that time. I could only show a scaled-down version of the product. The process required negotiation in expanding our budget and scaling back on a couple of features to finish. I wasn’t happy but it got us to a place where the platform functioned. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Sit down with the supervisor or whoever’s going to be the interface between the client and the development team. Be clear about the features you want and give visual representations as examples. Once the idea's communicated correctly, smartData Enterprises will execute.

There’s also a level of humility that both sides need to share to be able to come to the same place. There were instances when I felt that they weren’t actually understanding what I was saying, which was proven because their team came back with a feature that wasn’t what I wanted. When I requested that they get back to me sooner and give me more incremental feedback, there were conversations in which they would interrupt to assure me that their team knew what they were doing. This may be because we were speaking in a different vernacular.

My organization is called Classroom Panda, which is a daycare management software. We do everything from records management to monitoring the daycare classroom. It’s our job to put parents’ minds at ease through classroom oversight, which allows parents to see pictures and videos of their children throughout the day. The software also provides daily summaries, accounting, and staff management.

What challenge were you trying to address with smartData Enterprises?

We needed to develop the platform. I have a 20-year background in daycare, and my family has been in the industry for 30 years. Our goal was to solve existing issues by formulating a system that addresses them.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Early on, we had several discussions about how to best implement the process and which technologies would be best. We decided on a full-stack development of a cloud-based system. Initiating the development, the team built iOS and Android applications. They addressed all the different platforms we needed, developing natively. At this point, the first version of the software is now available. We’re working with them on a second version now.

What is the team composition?

We worked directly with about 7–8 of their teammates on a general basis. They provided project managers, hardware engineers, web developers, iOS specialists, and both front- and backend developers.  

How did you come to work with smartData Enterprises?

One of the project managers reached out to me. From there, we found them online and looked at a few of their reviews. They had positive feedback from several of their past clients, so it was a pretty obvious selection.

So far, we’ve spent about $50,000. By the end of our work together, our spend will probably be double that amount.

We started the project in October 2018, and it’s an ongoing effort.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’re really confident in their abilities and had to do very little reworking of their delivered products. Our team did a soft launch of the product to get user feedback on an appropriate scale. So, we’re serving about 45 customers right now, which is about to triple in the next few months. Their feedback has been very positive. They’re happy with the interface and how the program runs. We’ve run into very few bugs and made modifications that they requested.  

How did smartData Enterprises perform from a project management standpoint?

We had a few project managers, who were great about following up with us to make sure everything was performing up to standards. They answered questions and concerns in a timely manner, completely understanding all aspects of the project. We communicated over Skype and Basecamp. They devised detailed plans and updated us over those platforms.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They have a passion for their work, always doing their very best. Their passion and efficiency are two attributes that make them stand out.

Are there any areas they could improve?

This was a very large-scale development, and they’re efficient at what they do. I could’ve given better explanations on my end, but they’ve been receptive and open to changes.

Scope out a full, detailed project plan. Clarity will go a long way in ensuring the success of your project. They’re able to handle it from there.

I'm the CEO and Co-Founder of Inkblot Technologies, which is an online mental health marketplace platform.

What challenge were you trying to address with smartData Enterprises?

We wanted to build an online marketplace app.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We had ideas on some designs, in terms of the application and the functions that would be needed. Over two years smartData Enterprises built, designed and constructed the site. It is a LAMP Stack, but there are additional various technologies I know they used. It's a video counseling site, so it does include a platform in which both clients and providers can have video sessions. The site uses webRTC as the video platform.

The site also includes both provider and client registration, their evaluation and matching algorithm, and there is an automatic scheduling functionality for clients. The site has secure billing, uses an external API, has data storage and file transfers. It is HIPPA compliant, secure and confidential, meeting international medical regulations. smartData has had a hand in all of that.

What is the team dynamic?

There is excellent team dynamic between them our local group. Our developers regularly communicate on various channels to resolve issues and there is a great commitment to teamwork and task completion.

How did you come to work with smartData Enterprises?

We went through Upwork and interviewed several developers, some local and others international. We looked at the pricing of previous projects, examples of work that they had and references. That is how we came across smartData.

We are now approaching upwards of $150,000.

We began working in November 2015 and the relationship is still ongoing.

Most users are happy with it, the feedback has been it has been great.

How did smartData Enterprises perform from a project management standpoint?

From a functionality perspective, they've done well and have been very accommodating.

When we started we didn't have any developers ourselves, but since then we hired three developers and smartData works really well with them, in terms of orienting and getting them up to speed. This is important to us because sometimes you have developers in multiple places and the team changes.

They have been very flexible, using any kind of task management or messaging system that we have asked. Additionally, they have been accommodating by using the technology we’ve needed and meeting all requirements. Initially we were using Skype and Basecamp to communicate. Then we switched for a little bit to JIRA, but most of the work now is happening over a combination of Skype and Asana. Due to the time zone difference, this makes the most sense.

For the majority of the contract there was a project manager that was involved part-time who had an excellent command of English language and would make sure the project was running on time and hitting the various milestones. We’ve now moved more towards contracting developers directly and we're doing product management ourselves so we now have a slightly different contract with smartData.

I think one of our shortcomings as contractors was that we had not mapped out the functions and design as well as we should have. They did a great job of trying to do their best to meet our needs. Since then, we have done a front-end redesign and that's going well. There's been no major issues and they have been pretty quick in terms of resolving bugs and issues that come up.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The biggest thing is that they have a lot of in-house expertise, especially with building apps. When we've needed network help there has always been somebody who's good at that database or specific kind of frontend design. They can provide options and help with choosing components and APIs, which makes it easier for us.

They have a number of people working on coding internally. Along the way, as needs came up, they always had someone who could jump in and help with our specialized tasks. In my opinion, that's difficult to get with local developers because they work on specific skill sets when you only have one or two people.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They were extremely keen and they worked hard. It's not anything that they would have done differently, but we should have had better designs and a more concrete idea of what we were looking for. That would have made it a lot smoother, but they work hard to do best by us as much as possible.

• We set out to refresh our out of date e commerce platform which we felt was not doing a good job of serving the needs of our customers in the Textile industry. Our past site was slow to load, had issues with navigation, and did not include many of the features today’s shopper expects like personal product recommendations, easy mobile access, and a very simple check out process. Also we were dealing with high bounce rates and low conversion rates which in turn hurt sales and also was a source of frustration for our customers as well as our internal team. We had to find an agency which not only would re design the site but also improve performance, scale, and user experience at the same time as they had to also keep in mind our brand identity.

The work was wide ranging which included design to deployment. We began with wireframes and prototypes to present the new site architecture which we made sure to be very intuitive and which also broke out well with our brand identity. Upon approval we moved onto full scale development which saw in features like advanced filter options, AI product recommendations and we integrated third party tools for inventory management and analysis. Also we put a large focus on mobile optimization which we did to ensure the site performed great on all devices. Security was also a key element, we added in SSL, two factor auth, and regular vulnerability scans to protect customer data. We delivered a full scale e commerce platform, in house training for our team, and in depth documentation which goes into how to run and update the site going forward.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Our experience with smartData was very transformative. We launched a new site that not only looked great but also saw large improvements in performance. We saw page load times drop dramatically, and also had better navigation which in turn increased session length and engagement. Also of note we saw that these changes played out in the business, we had a large increase in purchases, in particular from mobile users which for us had been a weak area. Also we had very positive customer feedback on the site’s improved ease of use and look which we think played a key role in the increase in conversions.

smartData's project management was of a very high standard the whole process through. We found them to be very much on top of their game which is to say they met all deadlines and in many instances beat them. At times we had issues which included that of getting the old systems to play nice with the new platform which we did not have a great deal of experience with, but they came up with great solutions very quickly. Also we noted their very open line of communication which we very much appreciated, we got our weekly reports which were very detailed and also if at any point we had an issue they would reach out to us right away to see how we were doing. In terms of what it did for us, the results have been very positive, our marketing team has a better tool to run our campaigns which in turn has improved our bottom line and our operations team is running more efficiently with better inventory tracking in real time.

The work scope was huge and involved developing whole new mobile apps, really to custom specifications for our hospital. Some extremely important things were that we get a sleek user interface along with this. We also had to integrate directly into our current system of health records. The service app to book appointments and communicate directly via messaging with patient care teams was a key milestone too and of course also the collection of health education materials for reference. Security of course was also very high on their list of top priorities and they keenly followed all healthcare regulations through the whole development process.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We picked up some pretty substantial measurable results from that collaboration. Following the launch of our mobile app we saw quite a big rise in patient engagement. More and more folks were using the app to sort through their healthcare needs. Our users particularly liked using the app because of it being so easy to use and convenient. The scheduling feature also sharply reduced calls to our office and freed staff from responding to patients' details so they could focus on direct patient care too. Patient satisfaction scores for access to services have also gone up.

Smart Data Enterprises did superbly throughout our collaboration and impressed us constantly with their terrific handling of projects. From beginning and through to end they stuck to reliable timelines scheduling and delivering every phase as planned – there were none that lost ground. Their team was always flexible and quick to respond to our ever-changing needs making sure thoughtful consideration and thoughtful integrating feedback became a hallmark. Work done has had an excellent impact impacting our organization in a very clear way as they contributed to better operational efficiency and also imbued closer relationships with our patients.

I am the founder of a start-up, who contracted SmartData Inc for the development and build of my startup.

I and my partner are building a video-commerce platform for unrecognised labels and brands.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We selected the vendor through Upwork purely on the basis of the bid and based on their false representation from previous work delivered and manipulated ratings.

The solution was a MERN-stack based website and application for the eCommerce domain. The contracts signed were based on a delivery period of 3 months and clearly marked milestones. However misusing the Upwork platform the hours billed were not aligned to achieving the milestones instead they sneakily billed hours on the platform with the platform threatening us if the payments were not made in time.

On top we were given 1 week only by the Upwork platform to review and raise any disputes which were handled offline and not on the platform. We were informed by the delivery team that Upwork management was hand-in glove with them and would not take any action against SmartData.

The team was ever changing with an incompetent project manager + director of delivery + customer support representative all rolled into 1. We were allocated 3 developers 1 delivery lead and all of them kept exiting the project

The project did not achieve anything as it was left incomplete by the SmartData Enterprises team. We argued and requested for a full refund of the incomplete project also going to Upwork to raise a dispute however all avenues were closed for us as we are not based in India where the offices are. Upwork also showed no interest in resolving the issues as the platform has a provider bias.

Very unprofessional and unethical behavior. A signed contract for 3 months became a never-ending project till in october we decided to end the project. We were given 6 deadlines all of them violated everytime with no consequences or remorse from the SmartData Ent.

They can lie through their teeth and take customers on a ride, wasting their time and money

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

They can only do one thing and that is stop looting customers of their hard-earned money if there was a way to legal action in Australia against the company I would have gone straight to fair-trade and got my money back
