What was the scope of their involvement? 

To get a sense of what I was looking for, Rudo Studio asked me about the themes I liked, reviewed other sites I sent them, and checked out my studio’s Instagram. They then created a storyboard for me before building out the site on WordPress. I was responsible for the content and images.

It was just Mike (Founder).

I found them online. When I looked through their portfolio, I liked the freshness of the work — it just looked really modern.

I’m the director of product and marketing for Voyager Worldwide. We’re a maritime technology business. We make software for ships and shipping companies. We have a maritime ecosystem that supplies data to ships and provides reports to the shipping companies that manage them.

They worked on a web design and build project.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We acquired a few companies within a short amount of time and they were being integrated into our brand. We had to pull together several websites representing several different global businesses, and create a single platform to represent them all.

It’s a WordPress site and it’s multilingual. It works really well.

What is the team composition?

Mike, the guy we worked with, is especially good. They had at least 3–4 people on the team and were able to put plenty of resources on the project.

How did you come to work with Rudo Studio?

I wasn’t involved with selecting them. When they were selected, I looked at the price and laughed because I thought it was too cheap. I though it may not have been a wise decision, but apparently they had some great design work and a great plan. The team that selected them really believed in them and really wanted to work with them.  

How much have you invested with them?

It was incredibly cost-effective. We spent about $15,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project lasted May –July 2020.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

It was very high quality. They are a design and build company and they were able to work very closely with the team that created our new brand identity. As a result, they were able to implement that into the web environment. They were very creative in their use of the various assets they have at their disposal. Overall, they captured the essence of what we were trying to convey.

On the build side, it’s proven to be very robust and solid. They were able to bring everything together without any bugs. They also loaded all the content for us as well. There were very few errors anywhere. Post-project, they were able to make adjustment here and there. For example, they were able to add a Japanese version of the site. They were very good about following up.

Over the next few months, we’ll start to assess levels of engagement and compare them to our previous sites.

How did Rudo Studio perform from a project management standpoint?

We spent a lot of time with the owners of our business who couldn’t decide what they wanted for logos and colors. They kept changing their minds, which compressed the time Rudo Studio had to implement the solution.  Still, they were able to deliver the entire product in eight weeks.

Without them and their commitment to deliver for us, we would have been in a difficult place. Somehow, they pulled it out of a magic hat.

I’ve never known anyone who delivered a project of this quality in that timeframe. They were exceptional and I’m very happy with the results.

I was impressed by their ability to design and build, the quality of the design, and the value they provide.  

Are there any areas they could improve?

No; I think they got everything right.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Give them the opportunity to be a bit creative. Sometimes we really nailed things down, but didn’t get the best results. Rudo Studio is really good at taking a brand entity and bringing it to life. So, I’d suggest trusting them a bit and seeing what they can do.

We needed a partner to help with UI/UX design and illustrations for our website.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Rudo built our website and illustration materials for launch. We gave them a brief and shared our style guidelines with them. We discussed all the pages that we wanted to create, including the pages' copy and visuals. We provided them with style examples. Over the course of a few months, their team refined the site’s illustrations.

Rudo Studio first sent wireframes for the site’s 5–6 main pages.  Following back and forth, their team then created wireframes for all the site’s 20 pages. They also worked on the WordPress site’s backend, which followed a similar process to the illustrations. When we need them, their team creates illustrations on an ad hoc.

How did you come to work with Rudo Studio?

I searched for a partner using a freelancer’s platform. I created a brief in which I laid out basic principles. We liked Rudo Studio’s approach, and they were cost-effective.

We’ve spent $4,000 on their services so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in February 2020, and the partnership’s ongoing. We’ll likely engage them to refresh the site early next year.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The site was immediately indexed, which may be a basic requirement but isn’t always the case. We’re on page one of search results, so it’s ranking high on Google. Rudo Studio has done a good job.

We requested more than most clients, so the development process took longer than anticipated. We were descriptive and had a lot of back and forth. Their team was patient and responsive. They kept the project moving. Every week their team had a deliverable. We communicate a couple of times a week via a freelancer’s platform or e-mail. Rudo Studio’s flexible.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their technical work and illustrations were well done. While we gave them three descriptive briefs, their team also came back with features we didn’t request. There was one particular element of the site that Rudo Studio understood so well that they came back with a great suggestion.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there’s nothing I’d have them improve. Given the cost and how much we asked them to accomplish, they did a very good job.

Have a reasonable sense of what you want. You don’t have to be extremely descriptive because they’re good at what they do.

I've worked with them on several projects so far. They have been the perfect fit for the type of website development and design partner that our business needs. Our goals were to upgrade the visual design including UI/UX of our website but not break the budget doing so.

I searched for the right partner online and was able to find them and gave them a pilot project to begin with. My main goals were quality and cost effectiveness, if both of those things were a fit then we would be willing to stretch timelines a bit. As my father always told me, you should have speed, quality, and price. You can only pick 2 to deliver well on.

The scope of work was several new website pages as well as upgrades to our mobile site UI/UX. This included several new pages as well as changes in website navigation, primarily mobile navigation responsiveness as well as CTA placement and UX.

We are on a custom Wordpress backend and use several integrated marketing technologies with the site. Key deliverables were page design, UI/UX design and all the coding to complete the project.

I only worked directly with the project Liason/Manager, Mike. Mike worked with his design team on my behalf based on our discussions.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

I am extremely satisfied with the outcome of the project. It was completed slightly past our agreed-upon timeline, but the quality was spot on and the price was fantastic. I see this as a long term relationship moving forward.

Mike set up a slack channel where we could communicate more consistently and with more flexibility. We also have calls from time to time to stay fully synced up.

Their ability to deliver high-quality work at a fraction of the price of the standard WordPress design partners that won't blink an eye at charging you $150/hr just to pick up the phone was impressive.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

I would have liked to have more consistent and timely communication through the project. I know they are very busy with new clients and COVID re-openings which is understandable.

Since launching the site, we’ve seen a 400% increase in the number of leads. We launched the new website during COVID-19, but we saw a lot of success because companies saw the value of our solution during this unprecedented time. We got excellent feedback about the navigability of the website. It’s a marked improvement from our old website.

We communicated with them primarily through Slack. We also have a joint document where we keep track of updates that we want. They gave great suggestions and were very responsive. We had a really tight deadline with getting our website up, and they were really good at that. Everything gets done on time.

Their pricing is fair and they don’t overcharge. We like what they deliver. In addition, they don’t have an ego when it comes to design. We’ve worked with other brands in the past that really pushed designs that didn’t align with our brand. Rudo Studio understands our brand guidelines and is really receptive to our feedback. They take our suggestions and make them better.

They could provide more updates throughout the process. Aside from that, they’re pretty spot on.

Write a solid brief so Rudo Studio can understand what you want. It’s also helpful to communicate with them over Slack rather than email so you can get responses more quickly.
