The idea of our startup is that apartment owners can go to the website, enter their addresses and apartment numbers and get 3D models with respect to natural lighting and location. And then, users choose the material for flooring, wallpaper or plaster for walls, change standard windows to panoramic windows, arrange furniture single-handedly – as in a computer game they create the apartment of their dreams. They can save their project, navigate the prices of all goods and download the estimate. We turned to Rubius to create such a web service

We turned to Rubius on the recommendation of our partners, a large cadastral bureau in Russia. Rubius developed for them a system based on AutoCAD, which automates the creation of cadastral documentation of buildings and structures in 3D

The Rubius team has completely developed the MVP for us: from analytics to implementation. The team helped us in the preparation of the terms of reference, conducted research and developed a modern UI. As key elements of the web service, we identified the user's personal account, a layout editor, a repair editor, an estimate configurator, and a system for integrating with suppliers of all goods. The team also developed a "smart search" system to find the floor plan needed for an incomplete or incorrect address. Rubius supported us both at the open testing stage and at the trial operation stage

Thanks to the prototype developed by Rubius, we have attracted the first investments and are working with 4 clients in the testing mode, including large developers and banks

We have chosen a comfortable call schedule for intermediate discussions. The project manager once a month provided us with detailed presentations showing the results of the work done and the analytics carried out. The team responded adequately to the adjustment of tasks from user requests. I would like to note that the Rubius team has extensive experience working with real estate and developers. We didn't have to spend time delving into the subject area. The development process was as efficient as possible

The Rubius team has all the expertise we need: experience in creating web services, a strong portfolio of projects using 3D content, analytics and UI. As a matter of fact, they clearly understand how to work with startups and MVPs so that development does not exceed reasonable budgets and deadlines. The team is very adaptable. The company's experience in the narrow niche of CAD development was important to us, especially the practical experience gained working with Revit. The Rubius portfolio includes more than 50 projects with CAD systems, including Autodesk, AutoCAD, and Revit. It is not often you find a company with this level of expertise. So the choice was easy.

We generated the TOR and consolidated all our wishes in it. At the first conference call, we discussed all the details and nuances. Impressively quick, and coupled with an exemplary level of service. We used React, MobX, and Three.js. I would like to note that the co-founder of the company Sergey was involved in all the processes. We really appreciate this.

They quickly looked into the problem and came up with the simple and user-friendly solution we were hoping for. The workflow process was well planned and clear; Rubius noted our suggestions and implemented them in the code in the best possible way. To communicate, we used skype and github.

JSC CROC incorporated is an international IT company, one of the 10 largest players in Russia's IT market. I head CROC Immersive Technologies, a business area specializing in industrial applications for virtual, augmented and mixed reality, 3D graphics, and other technologies.

The CROC team needed extra capacity in its VR project. A contractor with experience developing VR simulators for the industry was needed. Rubius suited this role perfectly.

How did you select Rubius and what were the deciding factors?

Our first meeting with Rubius took place at their DevPRO developers' conference in Tomsk. We became interested in the company's expertise in terms of virtual and augmented reality. We added them to one of our VR 3D model creation projects, and Rubius showed themselves to be a competent and reliable contractor. Since then we have worked together to develop three VR simulators and have recently begun our fourth project together.

CROC specialists studied the client's needs and thought out the technical solution and the UI for the future simulator. Based on this information, Rubius developers created a system architecture and set it in motion. All the work was divided into stages with clear goals and deadlines set out. Rubius kept strictly to agreements and completed all of its tasks on time. C#, .Net, Unity, and JS were all used in the project.

At various stages, we interacted with six developers, a project manager, and DevOps engineers from Rubius.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

The VR simulator which we worked on with Rubius was implemented and is being usefully employed to prepare specialists at the client's training centre.

The project team was distributed as such: CROC took charge of analytics, design, and communication with the client and Rubius took charge of development. At times this can cause difficulties in communications, but there was complete synergy in CROC and Rubius' communication. We held calls with Rubius specialists every week planning tasks, assessing results, and discussing technical details. The majority of issues could be resolved through joint efforts during the calls themselves.

Moreover, Rubius developers demonstrated high involvement in the process, proposing new ideas, sharing practices from their own projects and readily taking part in solving issues that were not in their area of responsibility. This was particularly clearly seen at the most critical stages, which were at the start of development and during the completed solution's implementation. We used Telegram to communicate, and the developers largely communicated with each other using Discord. For co-operative work we used Teams, Google Docs and Google Sheets, and we used Jira to set tasks.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We value Rubius' versatility, which is not limited to Unity, their ability to work with enterprise-level clients, and their high flexibility and speed of project entry.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Increase the level of the product's graphical component in terms of CG, forming joint analytics frameworks to work more effectively with problem statements.

I am the head of the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at the National Research Tomsk State University, one of the leading universities in Russia.

Our university often becomes a participant in large projects in the field of industrial software development. In technically difficult projects, we involve other development companies to strengthen the team. This is exactly what the SCADA system project was. 

We had to implement the entire software package in just 3 years (which is more than 15 independent modules), while it was important not to use proprietary programs, SDKs and frameworks in the development. We invited Rubius to participate in such a project. 

The team had to help us in the development of 8 modules: HMI editing and playback, a graphics and events subsystem and a transport subsystem based on the OPC UA standard. All modules must have web and desktop versions.

Rubius are our long-term partners. Their employees teach, regularly speak at conferences at the university. The company supports the development of IT specialties, participated in the organization of a virtual and augmented reality laboratory at the university. 

Rubius has a wealth of experience in software development for large industrial facilities and a reputation for high-level professionals. Therefore, when it came to the development of a SCADA system, we made a decision right away.

The project lasted 3 years and was divided into 6 stages. At the first stage, the Rubius team developed a concept, prepared all documents: technical and draft design, described the architecture for each upcoming module. Due to the fact that the project was large and large-scale, we moved according to the classic software development scheme, without missing a single stage or important document.

For the transport subsystem, it was even necessary to develop a component of the OPC UA standard in order not to use someone else's code. The first stage ended with the development of the HMI module. At the 2nd stage, the first desktop versions were developed for charts, events and visualization of mnemonic diagrams.

In the third year, web versions and test methodology were prepared. In addition to the Rubius team, 2 more teams took part in the development, so at the third stage it was important to collect all the modules together and test them. 

Rubius eventually took over the overall management of the development, as their project office had sufficient resources for this. The main technologies that we used were C ++, Qt.

The team consisted of 12 people. Among them there are 7 developers, 1 PM, QA, analyst, designer, architect.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We completed the development and, with great success, presented the ready-made SCADA system to the heads of the largest industrial companies in Russia. Many of them implemented our solution several years after the presentation. The developed software outperforms competitors in performance and reliability. 

It can be developed without restrictions on the part of manufacturers and adapted to different industries and types of technological processes. 

The developed modules can function both within the framework of the software package, forming a single ecosystem, or separately, integrating into existing solutions from third-party vendors at the level of receiving / transmitting and displaying data.

The Rubius project office does an excellent job even with such large-scale projects as a SCADA system. Due to the fact that they ensured the coordinated work of all distributed teams, we were able to create a product, and not a mosaic of modules. 

We used Skype, phone and email for communication. In general, the communication took place quite quickly and the work proceeded without delays. The project manager was always quick to answer questions and kept abreast of all processes.

Open communication with the whole team, high qualification of the performers.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Any process can be improved. In this case, it is worth recommending greater transparency in the assessment of potential costs and a call for a joint close discussion of the risks of the project.

PIK-Project, the Project Office of the largest Russian developer PIK Group.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Rubius, and what were your goals?

Since its inception, PIK Group has built over 27 million m2 of residential real estate. To design efficiently and quickly, the company uses BIM. All models are created in Revit, and then BIM coordinators manually check them for clashes in Navisworks and send the edits to the designers. This cycle is repeated until all mistakes are eliminated, which increases the design time and cost.

We tasked Rubius with automating the validation of Revit-generated 3D models in Navisworks.

SOLUTION

How did you select Rubius and what were the deciding factors?

We have partnered with Rubius on an outsourcing model since 2018. The company has participated in the implementation of several of our projects and has established itself as a reliable partner. They have strong CAD expertise and experience with both Revit and Navisworks.

The development proceeded in several iterations. Within 2 months we received the prototype, which sent files to Navisworks directly from the Revit interface and converted them into the required formats.

In the next step, the Rubius work team implemented a function to automatically check models for clashes in the background. Over the next 4 months, the Rubius work team implemented a delayed start of checks, import of rules from Navisworks, and reporting of results to Revit. In August 2020, we involved the entire team to work in the service.

Now we are planning the 2nd stage of work on the decision. In the project, we used C# (.Net Core), Docker, Revit API, Navisworks API."

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

Rubius has developed a service that fully automates the process of checking models for clashes in Navisworks. Now the design engineer sends files for verification directly from the Revit window. At a specified time, the service automatically unloads models from the Revit Server, converts them to Navisworks formats, and checks them in the background according to pre-configured rules.

As a result, an error report is generated, the designers receive it by email and see it in the Revit interface. As a result, we were able to cover 100% of the models developed in Revit with a clash checking, and the number of clashes detected and resolved on time increased by three times without attracting additional resources.

Two times a week we called the project team using Google Meet. The manager and all the developers were present at the meetings, the results of the work and plans for the coming days were discussed.

After commissioning the service, at the same meetings we gave feedback to Rubius specialists: what we like and what needs to be improved. This made it possible to quickly eliminate errors and, as a result, make a product that best meets the needs of the Project Office.

I’m the head of research at Tomsk State University of Architecture.

What challenge were you trying to address with Rubius?

We needed help with AR development.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We engaged Rubius to develop an AR solution where users could see how design solutions would look. Architects develop the concept, the first iteration, the surroundings, and what the public space could look like. We wanted to demonstrate it to the public and citizens with visualizations and sketches and more advanced tools like applications with AR that citizens could use to see the possible improvements in the area.

They developed an application for Android. They also tested their solution onsite before we tested it with citizens. Then they developed instructions for us on how it could be installed on different smartphones. We tested the solution with several different groups. 

What is the team composition?

We agreed on the tasks with the co-founder. Then I worked with their IT specialist that developed the application by hand.

How did you come to work with Rubius?

Rubius previously worked with us on public space projects. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from November 2019–March 2020.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

From the moment they understood what we wanted, they developed the app really fast. They gave us an innovative solution. It innovated the communication of our design solutions. Their solution allowed us to attract much more attention to architectural heritage and preservation, which was our purpose. 

How did Rubius perform from a project management standpoint?

Project management was good. There were no problems. They were very good at meeting deadlines. They were always in touch. They’re really fast to react. If we give them feedback on what to change or improve, they’re very open and quick to learn.

 We communicated via in-person meetings because we’re very close to each other. We also communicated via WhatsApp for day-to-day communications.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I really appreciate businesses that have social impact goals. They have a corporate culture that’s very open, young, and energetic. The end product is high quality. We didn’t need to change it or test it many times.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I suggest that they have more interdisciplinary connections. It took us some time to agree on common understanding and language because IT people communicate their own professional language, which isn’t always clear to non-IT people.

I recommend working with them. They’re very stable. They’re engaged until the end.

I am the president of Digital Solutions Group. Out companies makes custom software for enterprise businesses. Our leading product is a cloud-based logistics software suite currently used by IKEA, Target and Wayfair.

We needed to upgrade a C# webforms version of the platform to a .Net Core set of applications. Rubius was involved in providing guidance in regard to the best technologies to use for front end and middleware, given our company requirements.

SOLUTION

How did you select Rubius and what were the deciding factors?

I was connected to one of the founders through a friend, and after several conversations felt they understood the requirements of the project, listened to my concerns. They provided additional insight in follow-up conversations which demonstrated that they really understood my goals and had put time into carefully considering options.

Rubius also focuses on providing English speaking development talent which is incredibly helpful. The qualifications of their team are undeniable, but their communication skills really helps the project move forward quickly. The talent management team that is very responsive if any issues do arise.

We need to upgrade a current C# webforms suite of applications. This included about 30 separate C# apps and two Xamarin mobile applications.

The first step was to settle on an appropriate technology stack that the company could move forward with.

The second step was to figure out what applications could be consolidated into single applications.

Following that a central service api need to be designed to replace all the independent stored procedure calls. Then the rebuild began, taking into account bug fix and improvements to the original product.

We have 3 people on the team, with additional people and resources available from Rubius on an add-hoc basis. We have a .Net Core/DB programmer handling most the VUE web front end and related services, we have a mobile developer building the two mobile apps as well as helping with backend programming. In addition we have a designer working on the mobile apps currently and will continue on the web UI.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We have provided an advance routing tool to our clients 3 months ahead of schedule. Our development progress has generally kept us ahead of out clients progress in rolling out new functionality.

At the beginning I understood this project would take years to complete the major upgrade, and then would include maintenance going forward, so given the long time frame, adjustments need to be made, but overall we are progressing well.

We have a standing weekly call and all project time lines are updated. It is rare to have to reschedule a deployment or reset client expectations as we have been able to meet our goals and infrequently provide guidance to my companies clients well ahead of time if something is running off schedule.

We mainly use Microsoft Dev Ops and Skype as our communication and dev op tools. We have used Jira in the past. We use email occasionally.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The quality and of talent they offer combined with the ability to communicate in English.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Long term third party talent hires can be difficult when talent needs/wants to move on. I should have had a better plan in place during the first year to account for a situation like this. Now we have redundancy in project knowledge and tasks.

"The Center conducts research concerning smart cities and tests technologies and products in a real environment, such as events, materials, art objects, etc. We use a specially designated area, the Live Lab, as a platform for the research. We decided to measure pedestrian and car traffic in the Live Lab, and find out the most popular routes and places. We approached Rubius to perform this task.

The company has its own product, the Visius video analytics system. Rubius agreed to customize the product according to our specific needs and develop a web service for online monitoring of the factors we were concerned about."

How did you select Rubius and what were the deciding factors?

Rubius is widely known in Siberia and has proved itself as a reliable partner and developer of high-quality software. As soon as we found out that Rubius had launched its own video analytics system on the market, we immediately started negotiations on customizing the program for our tasks. We were confident in the result since this project was not the first time that we had cooperated.

"The Rubius' project manager was our main assistant throughout the entire project. He coordinated all specialists, from programmers to camera installers, as also provided advice and demonstrated results. The development was carried out in weekly iterations. We held meetings with Q&A and feedback sessions every week. At the first stage, we worked with an analyst who got to grips the task and the specifics, and learned the requirements.

Then the Rubius team proceeded to customize the video analytics system and create a web service to monitor traffic online in the ""Live Lab"". At the end of the project, the Rubius team independently organized the camera installation through a subcontractor and connected the software to them. Thanks to this, we did not have to spend time on purchasing the necessary equipment and arranging installation!"

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We have been tracking pedestrian and car traffic using the Rubius video analytics system for more than a year. We can learn in real time how many people have passed or driven through the Live Lab territory and which route is the most popular.

This allows us to analyze changes in people's behavior in the context of events taking place in the city. This is especially useful during the pandemic. For example, we were able to establish for sure that after the first cases of coronavirus appeared in the city, residents switched to private cars on a massive, and pedestrian traffic decreased almost twofold.

The completion and implementation of the system took several weeks. This is the main indicator of Rubius' effectiveness. The team quickly got involved in the development process and just as quickly delivered the end result. It was quite difficult for non-IT specialists to understand the nuances of this software, but Rubius specialists clarified all the subtleties.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

This is stable work and its ability to produce results.

Descending to the level of a user and customer from a non-IT sphere.

Please describe your company and your position there.

Electro-Thermal Technologies is a major producer of technical and cryogenic gases: acetylene, oxygen, etc. I hold the position of project manager. It's my job to bring the project to release and commercialization.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Rubius, and what were your goals?

Our company covers the entire cycle of gas production and supply, so we have a large fleet of gas cylinders gathered at the production site. Previously, we used regular Excel spreadsheets to keep track of them. There was often confusion in the warehouse: cylinders were lost or replaced by unscrupulous partners with old ones. Such accounting did not allow us to plan cylinder inspections and optimize the fleet as well.

We were having extra costs as the result of it. Finally, we decided to develop a warehouse management system tailored for cylinders' control to put everything together in our warehouse. Since there are no such IT-solutions on the market, the final product could be replicated throughout Russia. We hired Rubius to develop this service.

SOLUTION

How did you select Rubius and what were the deciding factors?

We chose from several Tomsk IT-companies. We asked them for cost and time estimates and invited them to the plant so that the analysts could get a deeper understanding of the task. Rubius is the only company on the list that made it. Their great interest in the problem and attention to every detail were decisive elements for us to make a decision. We chose Rubius, even though their estimate was slightly higher than the others. And not once have we regretted it.

The work was divided into two stages. The first lasted a year and ended in a finished product. The second was iterative - we were finalizing the service. At the end of all the work, Rubius helped us with marketing preparations: they made a product website. The system consists of 3 parts: labeling, web-service, and mobile application.

After the first phase was completed, we implemented the solution in our warehouse and started actively using it. Based on this experience, we refined the system. For example, we decided to make an additional labeling option — NFC tags, since QR-codes were not as convenient as we expected. At the end of the second phase, when the system was debugged, we proposed it for testing to other companies. We used C# .netcore, Xamarin, Angular, docker, Yandex Cloud in the project.

We have 2 mobile developers, 2 front-ends and 3 back-ends on our team, and also a designer, analyst, project manager and QA.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

Using this service, we were able to reduce routine operations and cut costs arising from losses and confusion. Shortly after the release, we were joined by the first customers who are still using the system.

During development, the project manager came to our office 1-2 times a week, where we discussed the progress of work and details of the development. We worked on the Fix Price model, but despite this, the company met our wishes and made changes to the concept. In general, project management, developers competence — everything was at the highest level.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We felt free and comfortable in communication with the team. We appreciated the great interest in our project, and a desire to get inside the problem to solve cases more accurately. Among programmers, it is not customary to give advice to the customer or suggest more correct solutions, but the project manager Alexey has repeatedly offered more correct solutions than we have seen. It's rare not to go strictly by the development specifications.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Since I came into the project almost at the final stage, I lacked the speed of work and response on cases. I understand that the project was approaching release and the number of employees involved in our project decreased, but that's exactly what I personally missed.

Using BIM modeling in reconstruction projects is a costly and inconvenient way of digitizing construction. This is why we use point clouds to create digital models for work. It's 7-10 times cheaper. However, earlier point cloud processing was time-consuming, while existing software wasn't flexible enough.

To speed up this process and simplify construction supervision, we decided to develop an online platform, a PDM system for construction project control.

How did you select Rubius and what were the deciding factors?

It's not the first time we have worked with Rubius. The company has already helped us with R&D in the point cloud recognition field. Moreover, Rubius Team has profound experience in developing software for the construction and oil and gas industries. So when we decided to create the platform, the choice was obvious.

Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.

Despite the project's large scale, MVP was completed in 3 months. The interface already allows you to segment a point cloud, sync it with the construction and installation schedule, add cost estimation, and control work of individual contractors.

These are key features when supervising construction of remote objects. Point cloud processing is now 30 times faster compared to existing solutions. At the moment, we are planning to begin implementation of the second stage and make point cloud processing even easier.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

As the results of the first testing have shown, the system decreases reconstruction control costs by 5-6 times.

Project management was at its best. We constantly kept in touch with Rubius's manager and had regular calls with the project manager. It’s hard to find such a motivated and responsive development team.

We worked in sprints and received brief reports via Skype every week. Whenever we had questions or requests, we could send them at any time and get a prompt response.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Communication is perfect, they deliver the results right on time and work as one team with the stakeholders.
